2018 tOSU Defense Discussion

Yes, Urban's last remaining lazy "I settled for mediocrity to get my good ole buddy paid" hire concerns me. If Fickell was still coaching them, I'd have zero concerns.

I don't agree with the characterization of why Davis is on staff and Fickell had guys who were bad at it too. '11-'13 saw some pretty brutal LB play.

I do think some of it is just what you have to live with when you play a lot of tight, press man pass coverage. The LB's are in conflict A LOT.

So being willing to live with a certain amount of play action pass damage, it's the 3rd and longs seeing a TE or back running loose that drives me nuts.

I watched good portions of all the games last season over the weekend and my single biggest concern headed into 2018 is with the LB group.

They are unbelievably bad at covering TE's and backs off of play action.

Keeping things in perspective, not many teams are going to be able to beat a team like OSU on a long field just chipping away with that kind of attack. Then again, Iowa did happen and several teams in the B1G, most especially tsun, run that exact type of offense.

Nothing new to anyone at this point I know. Just putting my thoughts out there as we roll into '18.

This team is loaded but the LB's scare me.

Agree it is a concern. There was improvement by the end of last year, though. They were pretty good against tsun & Bucky after being obviously catastrophic against Oklahoma & Iowa. Maybe they tweaked something scheme-wise. I don't think we will lose much if anything with Werner replacing Worley. And Baker was as guilty as anyone else in terms of losing discipline, so as talented as he was by the end of year I think his production can possibly be improved on.

Iowa was obviously embarrassing but the Oklahoma game doesn't look as bad in hindsight considering they made a really good Georgia defense look stupid for 2.5 quarters.

They were pretty bad against tsun, the QB just missed wide open guys.

That isn't always going to be the case.

Harrison, Browning and Werner named starters at LB until Boreland returns.

That's tough news for Booker, Hilliard and Jones.

None of them have more than a year left so don't know if they'll transfer but they have been passed by younger guys.

The best will play.
And with Mitchell, Gant and Pope as the youngest pups, the future still looks bright

Doubt Booker or Hilliard will, Jones is a possibility but I am hoping he will get in and contribute this year.

Schiano said a few times in the presser that “we have more than three starters at Linebacker” and “we will rotate Linebacker like we did the DLine last year”

I tend to think that once Borland is back, you at least see him and Browning, Werner and Harrison all playing a lot. Also think that we'll see Booker, Hilliard and Jones all contribute meaningfully.
