2017 Offensive Coordinator Discussion

Regardless of who we hire, I would also love to see Urban reach out and pick the brains of guys like Chip Kelly, Gary Kubiak, and more.

Bringing in Schiano as a 'consultant' to appraise our defense was a key part in getting rid of the vestiges of the Withers era. Would love for us to do the same with offensive-minded coaches as accomplished as Kubiak and Kelly.
Schiano was hired for 2016. Chris Ash (current Rutgers HC) was Withers' replacement. Am I missing something?

Schiano was brought in as a 'consultant' by Meyer prior to the 2014 season, and helped (first-year DC) Ash to install our new defense (which is likely why we reached the playoffs)

Former Rutgers' coach Greg Schiano helps with Ohio State's defense

Ash and the rest of the Ohio State staff welcomed former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano to practice. And while Ash wasn’t quick to give up a lot of what Schiano taught the staff during his time in Columbus, Ash did say the staff found his input useful.

"He's not just calling plays, he's setting up plays."

Heard that about an OC during an NFL telecast today, and it reminded me of what I don't see our offense doing under Beck/Warriner.
You don't think the 5 yard swing pass behind the LOS wasn't to set up the 3 and 11 QB draw or that new trick play we put in, the shuttle pass to #4 that no one was keying on?

How about using the one play we have where JT goes under center (Jet Sweep to Samuel) to set up a QB scramble/sack? Love that one.

If we can get Kevin Wilson it's a slam dunk, but I think there are a lot of other good candidates out there that if given the chance (and the power) they could do great work.

I don't want Kevin Wilson anywhere near my alma mater. We can win football games without a guy like him.

I really appreciate how we only run jet sweep from under center and nothing else; it really keeps the defense guessing about what's coming when we go under center.
Seriously. When I saw that last night, I was legit pissed - texted a couple buddies about it saying "This had better be to set up something else for later." Of course, it didn't set up anything.

I don't think OSU has even run a QB sneak out of that look. What was the thinking? "Hey, let's call a jet sweep out of the JT under center look. We've had a month to prepare, no doubt Clemson will think we're going to do something different, but ... we'll do the same fucking thing and it'll be goddamned genius!"

Is that a "tendency" Beck referred too?

I still can't get his answer out of my head:

Reporter - "how much does it fall on personnel?"

FuckWad "it's all of it. It's personnel, its third and fifth year seniors, I mean its just everything, it ties into guys when you are running an offense, sometimes there are tendencies they just happen, its natural every football team has them"

One stat that doesn't get enough mention.
3 pass plays of over 40 yds all season. 2 against helpless BG.

Good for 118th in the nation.

For a team that purports to deploy a power spread and take vertical shots that is pathetic.

Zone6 is hereby renamed the ICP.
Beck should be fired for cause, not sure on the timing.
And Ed needs to be a dedicated OL coach or shown the door.

I posit we will have to fire coaches and not hope someone "poaches" them.
Why the hell would Herman want Beck anywhere near him.
Zach is unhireable. Even by Luke.
No power 5 school will bring Ed in as an OC.
Stud was a disaster this year.

We have an elite defensive staff, our offensive staff is a cluster.

I just don't understand how we don't have 3 or 4 plays that we can just beat people over the head with, and force them to allow other things just to stop it. That's how you set things up. I'm all for taking what the defense gives us, but FFS you gotta be able to impose your will a little bit as well. We just don't do that at all.

Fellas, watch this and tell me what you see.

Here is what I see. A player making quick decisions, ball coming out WAY FASTER than the past two years, and SADLY, I see plays that we haven't run in two years. This is JT BARRETT. Beck has [Mark May] on this kid. If Tom Herman were still here, who thinks JT would not have been in NY for the Heisman finals?

I see a lot of accurately thrown deep balls in that video. Hmmmmm...
