2017 Offensive Coordinator Discussion

This kind of loss is program changing, either for better or worse. If there are not significant changes in the offensive (double meaning there) staff, then I would say that Urban has all but given up and we will get to witness a long slow spiral downward until he is back at ESPN.

I don't expect that to happen, but since he hasn't moved to make changes before it got this bad, it is a concern. This would be a 'for the worse' type of change, obviously.

Constructive changes will probably involve wholesale evaluation of everyone on the offensive side of the ball. Urban alluded to this in the post game presser. For players that will probably mean that there will be no set starting positions in the spring/fall. Every position will have to be competed for, form QB to RG. We'll still probably see the same faces we expect in key positions because they starters for a reason, but it will instill a sense that 'no one is safe' type of competition.

Along the same lines, the staff have to be looked at the same way. Fire everyone in theory, and if, based on their performance to date, if they are not the caliber of coach you would hire from outside, then fire them in reality and hire someone who is. Not a single job in the offensive coaching room should be 'safe' right now.

The Oline kids we have coming in will more than make up for deficiencies in my opinion. Whether or not the progress and become the studs that they should be is up to coaching and effort.

The skill guys have to be coached up more. I watched route running last night and guys went 100% until the end of the route, then just stopped. Why they don't keep working to get open I have no idea. The reads weren't good either for the most part and contrary to what a lot of people are saying, the Oline protected pretty well. A couple of stunts got us but JT still could have thrown those balls away.

Awareness is awful. Guys seem to be thinking way to much and not being able to recognize schemes or adjustments. That is coaching.

Fellas, watch this and tell me what you see.

Here is what I see. A player making quick decisions, ball coming out WAY FASTER than the past two years, and SADLY, I see plays that we haven't run in two years. This is JT BARRETT. Beck has [Mark May] on this kid. If Tom Herman were still here, who thinks JT would not have been in NY for the Heisman finals?

The 2014 season for JT was no fluke. I've said it before, get a new QB coach in here asap (along with other changes that have been mentioned). I agree JT is not Elway throwing the ball but his mechanics the past 2 years have been awful. Why have they not been corrected? We all know the answer to that question.

If we can get Kevin Wilson it's a slam dunk, but I think there are a lot of other good candidates out there that if given the chance (and the power) they could do great work.

Matt Canada just got snapped up by LSU but he did fantastic work at Pitt. Joe Moorhead is another but he isn't going anywhere. For a QB coach I'd be fine with Brian Wright who is at Toledo, he helped Woodside take a huge leap forward this year and he did some good work at FAU.
Definitely like that you mentioned Wright. Seems like he checks off a lot of boxes (Ohio native, prolific passing offense, etc). Other guys I like are Kevin Johns, Mike Yurcich and Sonny Cumbie.

My God that kid was a stud. :getout:

THAT JT and this years defense, National Freaking Champions.

Has Urban ever been the main play caller? I mean if he is willing to basically be the QB coach and offensive coordinator I'd be fine with keeping Beck and Warriner around, but even that would be a stretch. The thing that worries me is that this was the perfect year for Urban to basically be O-coordinator if he wanted to be because of how good Fickell, Schiano and co have done with the defense. And if he didn't this year, I doubt he ever would.

Or we head down to Chattanooga, give Tom Arth 400K and tell him sorry for making you quit your job after a few weeks but time to head to Columbus :) I can dream at least....

Regardless of who we hire, I would also love to see Urban reach out and pick the brains of guys like Chip Kelly, Gary Kubiak, and more.

Bringing in Schiano as a 'consultant' to appraise our defense was a key part in getting rid of the vestiges of the Withers era. Would love for us to do the same with offensive-minded coaches as accomplished as Kubiak and Kelly.
