2017 Offensive Coordinator Discussion

I don't want Kevin Wilson anywhere near my alma mater. We can win football games without a guy like him.
IMO, coordinator is a massive difference than head coach. Kiffin is a complete sleezeball, with Alabama of all places basically telling him to get the hell out, but he helped reshape their offensive IDENTITY (yes, that is something that exists many places) and was a huge reason they won it all last year. Get Kevin Wilson in here, if only for 2-3 years, and the offense could be humming from day 1 and set a new standard for when he leaves.

My dream scenario is Warriner back to OL (hell, let him keep the co-OC to make the move have a better chance of happening, but no more calling plays), Wlson in as QB/OC, and maybe a Joker as the WR coach (I agree with others that Joker shouldn't be an OC, but he is probably a solid WR coach). And if you want to keep Smith on staff due to his ties to Earle and his recruiting prowess, make him the TE coach.

QB/OC with playcalling duties: Kevin Wilson
OL/OC without playcalling duties: Ed Warriner
WR: Joker Phillips
TE: Zach Smith
RB: Tony Alford

I just thought of a way for Urban to put together the greatest college football staff ever! It would take cleaning house on the offensive side of the ball tho. Below are the current coaches and who should replace them.

QB/OC - Tim Beck - Mark Helfrich
TE/OC - Ed Warriner - Kevin Wilson
QC - Joker Phillips - Chip Kelly
WR - Zach Smith - Joker Phillips

Highly unlikely but how awesome would that offensive staff be?

Tim Beck shouldn't be allowed within 100 yards of our quarterbacks. In fact, if you're gonna keep him on as a recruiter, he shouldn't be allowed to speak to them after they sign their LOI.

JT is probably permanently damaged at this point.

I was listening to the second Beck interview where he said he spent a lot of cycles trying to see if JT made the right read. Well, sure, a QB has got to do that, but it may have been the wrong thing to say under the circumstances. If he had said "I was looking to see if JT was getting the ball out quick," it would have sounded better.

And I believe in 2014, I remember seeing JT have all day long to throw.

Anyway, no QB ever does well if there is not a lot of time to throw.

I think part of the problem already is too many cooks in the kitchen. That's a lot of great minds but sometimes it's better just to have one chief than three.

Can someone please explain the fascination with Helfrich.. I get it Mariota did well "under" his tutelage but Chip Kelly was there in the beginning then Frost... I just dont get it. If he was that hot or great there would be other teams beating down the door to hire the guy, yet they are not.

If the goal was/is "9 strong" the OC/QB/WR-TE/Ol coaches should be nervous.

I could make a case we were 3 or 4 strong all year.

Which makes it remarkable we went 11-2 given the talent we lost and the schedule.

Given what we have coming back and coming in the future is bright as long as substantive changes are made to the offensive staff.
Doing what they did last year - move Ed to the box along side Beck - doesn't count.
Nor does talking about becoming an efficient passing team for the 2nd straight year with the same cast of characters.
The changes better not be reshuffling the deck chairs and calling it Tuesday.

I agree...but I do think that maybe Kevin Wilson plus a up-and-comer QB coach with Chip Kelly as QC would be great. Chip wouldn't call plays, he'd just help develop game plans.

I'd be thrilled with Kevin or Chip but I think both have way too dominant personalities to mesh well together. With Chip being a guy who won't last long, I'd prefer Kevin. But I do agree this staff needs some youth.

I'm of the opinion the offensive staff needs a coffee colonic which I define as multiple changes including at OC.

The thought that moving Ed upstairs to baby sit Beck was fools gold.

Another thought. The last series in regulation of the Michigan game has is a perfect summation of how dysfunctional this staff is.
