2015 tOSU Defense Discussion

True enough. Then again, that fcuking freshman is really goddamn impressive.

We won't look forward to facing him the next three years. What a beast.
Hopefully Barkley goes pro after his Junior year.

I think it is apparent how important Josh Perry is to this defense. Hope he gets back on the field soon.

Just looking at point totals from last season versus this and one thing really popped out.

Last season through 8 games we allowed 159 points. This season 121. That is roughly 20 ppg in 2-14 versus 15 ppg in 2015.

But what is interesting is that in the last four games of last season we allowed an average of 29 points per game. Almost twice what we are averaging now.

That is how suspect our D was down the stretch before we magically became an NC caliber team.

Defense played a version of what the seahawks play which is single high safety and a safety in the box. I didn't realize we were playing something entirely new until I saw the article by 11W. I did notice that Powell was often times lined up right over the tight end but I never put two and two together. I love this as a switch up to our cover 4 because it allows us to have numbers against the run which we have needed as of late.

It's also good that Bell is the single high safety as he's the better open field tackler and has better coverage typically over Tyvis. Great switch up though to help combat our tendency to stop the rush.

Saw this from an article on Bosa on 11w, but thought it showed how good our Dline has been playing as a whole! 3 of the 5 players on this list didn't see a whole lot of snaps last year, and this year they stepped in great for the departed Buckeyes. Oops, sorry @Dryden, didn't see that you posted this first

May be this is the reason that I thought our defense was more aggressive against Rutgers than any other time this season. I do not know if it is because of this or not and maybe it is just my imagination but I hope they keep looking that way the rest of the year.

I'd imagine it is why I noticed that as well. Besides when Apple missed that tackle in the backfield and the back then went 25 yards around the end on the opening drive we did a much better job forcing things back inside and IMO this was a large reason why.

To me it looked a little similar to what we did against Wisconsin last year which is put a safety down over top of the Tight end to maintain outside leverage and force everything inside. It will be interesting to see if we continue this type of play going forward because I think it can really pay off against teams that do not have the talent to take shots deep such as Minnesota, Illinois, and Scum. Nonetheless it's a nice change up to our defense and I'm all for putting a extra hat in the box because 6 in the box will not get it done IMO against scum. I know people don't think much of them and for the most part I don't either on offense but the key to that game is going to be getting off the field and I have no doubt if we crowd the box like we did to Wisconsin last year and Rutgers this year they won't really stand much chance

For returning players, the most notable difference from our D down the stretch last year to this year has been the play of Lee IMO. I realize teams have schemed away from him somewhat but I think it's mostly due to his being banged up. We have many players needing to heal up during the bye week but I'm really hoping we see a difference in Lee. In fact, if needed I'd like to see him rest the next 2 games. Having him return to last seasons form will be huge to the stretch run this year. Not saying he has played bad so far but he just doesn't seem to have the juice he did last year.

I think with the secondary injuries unfortunately coverage has been asked of Lee more than is typical. That's not the best way to use a 235 pound missed but we don't have a lot of options in the secondary. Hell if God forbid we lose another Defensive back we may be forced to put Lee at DB in a way

After this week the Ohio State defense is #2 in scoring, only behind Wisconsin.
Only Boston College (15), Wisconsin (15), and Michigan (16) have surrendered few TD than us (17). Florida, Missouri, and Alabama are the only other three teams that have given up 17 TDs. We're ahead of BC in scoring defense despite given up two more TDs because we've given up six fewer FGs (7 vice 13).
