2015 tOSU Defense Discussion

Perry and McMillann are NOT slow! The guys are getting out of their "lanes" and playing over-aggressive on defense.
They just need to be more disciplined on a pass rush.
And I believe Lee is playing hurt right now and that slows him down. He's not himself.
Lots of guys are banged up right now.

Bosa has barely missed on literally like 7 different opportunities. If he just can somehow manage to get home a few more times we will have all the adjustments we need on defense. When Bosa get's sacks they're normally not the -1 yard variety they're normally the -8 yard variety. They're momentum builders and it's what our defense is missing up front IMO from a taking over the game stand point (outside of the DT's stopping the run)

Right now the defense is I think playing a little too aggressive. That leads to sloppiness and big plays. It seems like a lot of the defense is going for the big play too much. Big plays like sacks and ints are game changers but when you miss it can keep the opponents drive going. I love the big plays they get the team pumped but I'm also a fan of the tresses and dantonio style of disciplined defense. Force 3 and outs. This was also something bosa talked about as something to improve since last year. I think that's part of why his sack numbers are t great. He is playing his part and allowing other guys to get the sack.

Me thinks we are over analyzing this team right now. Ive read on social media about how bad the Buckeyes have been playing on defense. I don't see it at all. I just see some large chunks of yardage given up the last 2 weeks by mobile quarterbacks. Looking at the numbers, this defense is playing at a high level.

#1 Defensive TDs
#6 Pass Efficiency Defense
#9 Pass Defense
#11 Team Sacks
#19 Total Defense
#21 Scoring Defense
#21 Passes Intercepted
#28 Team TFL

Im pretty impressed with where Ohio State stands right now. While TTUN may brag about their top 5 defense, they have yet to even play an offense ranked in the top 60 nationally. I see the Buckeyes improving each week which is a great sign of things to come. If they can shore up the big plays given up the middle, it will be a great second half of the season to watch.

I tend to agree. We seem to be over-pursuing and losing contain on the edges and, as has been writ large this week, have been gashed up the middle, but this isn't the defense from a few years ago. These guys know how to tackle and actually DO tackle. The aggression seems to come within the flow of the defense which I know is something that Ash & Co. have preached. While we could rein that in a little so we're not sucked into/away from the play, it's not the result of repeated out of control knucklehead attempted kill shots like we used to see. Instead is seems to come from a comfort level with the scheme that they didn't have until the end of last season. We can get that under control and make it productive and I expect to see that tomorrow night. Go Bucks!

The thing with our defense is we've given up big hitters in all of our games it seems.

1. Tech- the throw back and the scramble play at the end (14 points)

2. Western Michigan- Braverman hauling in a 55 yard td

3. Indiana- throw to the tight end for 30, and the 75 yard td run by their 150 pound QB.

4. Maryland- 75 or so yard run by the QB and the 50 yard TD pass.

We just have to be better at keeping our assignments and making teams earn it when they score. Teams won't consistently be able to go 10-15 plays to score so as long as we don't give up the big hitters we will be more than fine.

I agree our defensive line plays too wrecklessly. They're always too focused on getting up field and teams know this to use it against us. I like how the defense is playing over all for the year but we could/should be a top 5 defense with those big plays removed.

I always have to remind myself that we screamed for a more aggressive defense in '12 and '13, all the while agreeing that would mean a few big plays per game. But it also means we don't have to watch offenses methodically dissect us. In other words, we signed up for this and I would much rather watch what we have now than revert back to Withers ball.

Just don't give up the big play? Fucking genius backseat driving we got here. I'm sure the coaches are browsing this site looking for tips. Keep 'em coming.
This week 3 seperate times ive taken jabs for my opinion. What the fuck do you expect other than a general observations on a message board? A goddamn full on breakdown on how to systematically shut teams down? Wanna take a stab at a analytical and comprehensive breakdown of our defense so we can have some real geniuses post on here Sammy? Or are you going to stick to insulting others?

Like RB just said this is what most of us were asking for over the years (myself included) so we know what we were signing up for. Personally I don't think 75 yard RUSHES should be happening in back to back games but take out those big plays and we have been just as good as any defense.

I like the aggressive D so I am willing to take the good with the bad. I liked it back in the days when Fred Pagac coached it and I am glad we are back to it. I hate watching our CBs 10 yards off the line of scrimmage. Give me the old dawg pound D where Minnifield and Dixon were in the wideouts grille every frigging down.

Where in the holy fcuk is our outside contain and JHFC when it was obvious that Barkley could get the corner anytime he wanted, why didn't we slide somebody (our walkout LB, maybe?) over there!? That fcuking FRESHMAN is still running this morning.
