2015 tOSU Defense Discussion

T#32 in TFL per game at 7.1
#23 in 3rd down conversion D .31%
#13 scoring defense 16.3 ppg

Whats the problem?

Teams hit some big plays because 1) the defense is aggressive, its risk/reward and 2) they have kids on scholarship to

Every game isn't going to be 100-0
While I appreciate someone who looks up statistics before posting, I think the main concern with people who are worried about our defense and that includes myself is the quality of opponent that we have played so far this season. We should have those type of statistics against the teams that we have played so far. I guess we really will not know how good our defense is until we play against Sparty and TSUN.

I always have been an advocate of a press defense and so I am not bothered when we give up a long pass or two but my major concern is how teams are running against us around the edges. We really need to get better with our run defense IMO

I suppose if there's one knock it is that we are a little light up front. We are built for speed more so with Washington at DT (once a DE) Lee at LB (once a safety) and Hubbard at DE (once a LB).

So that's three of the front 7 that are naturally playing positions they had to Grow into and subsequently a little lighter. I'm not complaining because look at our pass coverage as a result. However I do think the big hitters don't need to happen 4-5 times a game like they did last night. I'd prefer to bring a safety down to help force the run play inside but it's hard to argue with the results which is low points and W's.

Where in the holy fcuk is our outside contain and JHFC when it was obvious that Barkley could get the corner anytime he wanted, why didn't we slide somebody (our walkout LB, maybe?) over there!? That fcuking FRESHMAN is still running this morning.

True enough. Then again, that fcuking freshman is really goddamn impressive.

We won't look forward to facing him the next three years. What a beast.

I get that we are always worried about "X vs a good team" but those good teams are pretty average this year.

remaining opponents team rank in points per game

#37 Iowa (probably) 33.2
#50 MSU
#58 Rutgers
#60 scUM
#73 Illinois
#106 Minny

Agreed, completely. My issue is really just that he was getting the edge because we didn't have anyone there. He might've broken an initial tackle anyway, but not all of them and he wouldn't have been at our second level moving at full speed. We weren't helping the DBs any by leaving the edge open for that kid. He ran hard. I wouldn't want to come up and hit him when he's already in a full sprint.

Perhaps part of the reason why tOSU is 60th is giving up rushing yards is that tOSU is 4th in passing yards allowed:
http://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/current/team/695
http://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/current/team/24/p2

1. For a couple years, no one tried to run on tOSU because it was so easy to pass. Now, since passing is a hard way to go, they may just run instead.

2. Others may say that no one needs to pass because it is so easy to run.

I think the first line of reasoning has more merit.

also, I think a large part of #1 is that teams run more as part of their game plan to keep the OSU offense off the field

I don't see how Sparty or TTUN is the benchmark to measuring our defense. Rudock is garbage, TTUN is 97th in Passing Efficiency and 99th in Passing Offense. MSU is underwhelming so far this season on offense, sitting at 60th in passing offense, 63rd in scoring offense, and 87th in red zone offense.

In terms of total offenses, here's what OSU has already faced:
Indiana #23
Western Michigan #41
NIU #50
(Rutgers #34 - next week)

TTUN is #90, and MSU is #72.

Now I understand there are intangibles that can't be calculated into stats, and no way am I saying that these will be easy games. Looking at their seasonal performances on offense I don't see how these are threatening offenses, especially since neither sport.a dual threat qb.

A brilliant side effect of more JT Barrett on offense is that the offense sees more sustained drives which gives the defense more rest time and hopefully more points to play from a lead. The fact that our offense has had a lot of 3 and outs or one huge scoring play and the defense goes back out there, is tough on the adjustments and their energy levels. Got a feeling it's about to change for the better.

This is why I love BP...so many great points above that you wont get talking to an average fan. I agree that:

1) JT running sustained drives is a HUGE benefit to this defense. Great point I had not yet considered @Bestbuck36 . And to be frank, many defenses that would be ranked ahead of us right now have offenses that drag drives out and make it impossible to score in bunches.

2) @Jaxbuck nails it in saying that we are actually playing great football on defense and are tending to focus on the negatives a bit much. While I will always speak up in where I think we can improve, I also remember where this defense was two years ago and I never want to go back to that. Every team in America is usually going to at least give up 10-17 points a week in this day and age...it is just going to happen. But this defense steps up when it needs to and we have guys flying to the ball and willing to sacrifice. You really can't beat the effort, passion, and talent that is out there.

3) What we appear to be lacking in the stat sheets is not that important...I see hustle plays left and right where guys are making the play, but not the tackle. Bosa is a perfect example...guy wreaks absolute havoc almost every play but the QB knows he is coming and runs the opposite direction. And Apple rarely gets thrown at because he is really good. When push comes to shove, I don't see any other defenses I would take over ours currently.

4) I really hope Perry is ok. Guy is the leader of our defense and we absolutely need him down the stretch.

I have read on other boards that OSU's D is suspect. My dad, the Ultimate-doomsday-Buckeye-Guy, is complaining every week because our defense gave up a first down and it was 3rd and 2. "Why the hell can't we stop anyone".

How short are Buckeye fan memories anyway? Just like people forgot that Braxton Miller is a good football player, people have forgotten that two years ago we actually were very bad on D and couldn't stop St. Ignatius most nights let alone Clemson. I actually yell at the TV at times when the announcers give Fickle credit now for our good Defenses, because as far as I am concerned, this is Chris Ash's defense because Fickle's D's SUCKED DONKEY BALLS before Ash came to town, PERIOD END OF STORY OUR FICKLE DEFENSES SUCKED OUT LOUD. I thank God every night for Chris Ash right after I thank him for Warriner, which comes after my UFM thankiness.

I think we are playing at a high level. Like someone else said, other teams have good players too, they are going to score some points. Our lack luster Offense is partially responsible for some of the points for not sustaining drives and TOs. I am not worried at all about our D, well I take that back, I am slightly concerned about a few injuries on D, but I am confident we are going to be able to get some of the best Offenses off of the field when we need to in January.

Just out of curiosity - which defense was ever "Fickells defense"? Because he's been a Co-DC since 2005 and I remember fielding some amazing defensive talent. So I guess it's all Fickells defense when they play poorly but it's been Ash or Heacock defense when they play good? Now even when the defense is doing great and fickell continues to churn out amazing Linebackers (like he has the past 10 years) he still gets no credit from you? Sounds like it will ever be impossible to please you...

Outside of big plays given up recently up the middle, this defense has played outstanding.
