2015 tOSU Defense Discussion

That's what I don't get? The problem with our defensive alignment is our 3rd linebacker is in the slot 90% of the time. This leaves the box with 6 defenders in it because our safeties play 15 yards from the LOS. Like you mentioned I'm shocked we don't trust our corners more (besides every big play has been due to our safeties) because I really think if we dropped another guy into the box and eliminated the run teams would have no answer for our defense.

Not only that but it's always Lee in the slot. Who would be our best QB spy though McMillian can probably cover that as well

True and never thought of that. Our LBS in the box (McMillan and Perry) are not very fleet of foot so taking Lee away from the box isn't the best IMO.

I'd love to see us drop a safety down to cover the slot and then slide Lee back into the box but that's just my opinion.

I don't know why we are so afraid of being burnt deep with the corners we have but to me that's why we get pushed around on the interior. Simply guys are being double teamed and even if Bosa is being double teamed he's going to be limited. That should open up someone to make plays but because we only have 6 in the box there's no one left there to clean up.

I would've also liked to see an adjustment to zone coverage because when playing man against a mobile QB you need people to have their eyes set in the backfield. Too often our DBS were chasing their man as the QB scampered to the vacant space on the field. Zone would've allowed us better sight on the QB which we needed last game.

Another thing I noticed and particularly dislike is how our blitzes are very obvious. For example many times Perry or McMillan were standing up over the center as the ball was snapped. With our Blitzer identified and within arms reach of the offensive line other teams have been able to pretty much eliminate that threat before it starts. To me we trust the front 4 too much and don't trust the back 4 enough. Commit a extra body to the box and stop priority one which is off tackle runs or options. On passing plays if a team can stand back and hit a bomb for 50 yards then they've earned it because against our rush it won't happen too many times.

Against scum we won't win the LOS battle if we don't commit like we did against Wisconsin last year with 8-9 in the box

Based on what? They're tremendously dynamic offense? The RBs?

They've beaten who they should've and lost to who they should've. I'm not seeing anything that just blows my mind especially from a running game point of view that the Buckeyes need to be tremendously cognizant of.

That's just the style of defense we play, cover 4 to defend against 4 verts and emphasis on not giving up easy passes underneath. MSU plays our defense with much more aggressive safety play against the run and have been very prone to big plays. They were #1 in the league against the run but worst in the league at giving up 30+ yard plays last year. They're near the bottom again this year despite playing mostly inept offenses.

The big problem the last two games was losing contain on the qb when he scrambled, which probably came down to not expecting a running qb when making the gameplan. Against WMU, well they shamelessly held and chop blocked on every run. Not much you can do against that if the refs are inept.

Against scUM, Lee will definitely be in the box with a safety down.

Last year with Hokes offensive coaching we had trouble stopping the inside run game with their north south attitude. So with better coaching, better line play, and more importantly timely play action while scum hasn't been explosive they've done a good job being efficient.

I don't want to sound too much of a ttun lover but another thing we are forgetting is they've been up big at the half in 2 of their 3 past games. I think their mind set changed on offense a bit from a attacking one to a protecting one. They knew no one was going to score on their defense so why take risks and possibly let the other team back in the game? They did what we would've done under Tressel which is bleed the clock, punt and strangle a team out.

I'm not saying they're all world because heck I understand they're not very explosive on offense. However to expect our defense to shut them down with our traditional 6 in the box would be a mistake on our part IMO. In the end they could very well get housed next week and show us who they really are, but until then I believe they're our biggest remaining obstacle.

So with better coaching...

This is the key and I completely understand and agree. Each of the past few years, the Buckeyes should've pantsed TTUN. Each time it was close instead; therefore, there is the chance that the better coaching will really push it to a closer game still. I just am not impressed with their run game. Maybe I'm naive or myopic, but I think that the Buckeyes will be on their game by then in all facets.

Their run game is just very hit or miss... seems it's either 4 breaking tackles and dragging people for 15 or he's getting stuffed in the backfield for a loss

The best adjustment they could make is playing Bosa regularly next to Washington. He's going to get double teamed no matter where he is, so let that double team clog the middle and enable either Lewis and Hubbard to get pressure from the outside, or rush Lee on whatever side Bosa is lined up on at DT and allow that double team to open up space for Lee to rush the QB.

Bosa is by far the best player on the defense and everyone knows it. They're doubling him to funnel him outside and it's causing him to break contain regularly. Use the double teams to your advantage to clog the middle and open up the outside edges where your quick LBs can make a play.

We have a hungry and capable DL and other teams are using that to their advantage.

I agree with the obvious showing of blitzes. Several nice runs on Saturday were the result of them showing blitz clear as day up the middle and the RB countering into the hole after the blitz got picked up. We have quick guys. They don't have to be on the line at the snap to get good pressure.

Not to mention when they come from 5 yards away they have a full head of steam and trust me it's tough to stop someone when you're flat footed and the Blitzer is going full tilt
