2015 tOSU Defense Discussion

6th ranked in Total Defense after 4 games.
Tied for #1 in Defensive TDs.

But where is the run defense?
Ranked #36 right now.
Teams are getting some yards running right at us. Same look as last year when we had trouble stopping the run game of some teams with good quality backs.

Much farther ahead than they were last year after 4 games. Seems the coaches might be more concerned about giving up the big passing plays and let the running game get chunks of yardage.

I will be interested to see if any of the X & O experts do a breakdown of what WMU was doing on those runs.

Just watching at game speed it looked like they were running our counter trey play on us or something similar. Net result looked like our DL slanted so hard to the play side an OL was freed up to get on the LB almost instantly and the back just cut back behind it.

Was a little shocked at how many times they were able to run left and watch everyone get lost in the shuffle. Huge holes.

I also wonder just how much they were holding on run plays. The fact that 3-4 got called on runs is pretty telling. Refs usually throw 1 token one a game on a random play, but they actually got knocked a few times. It was obvious on each passing down, but there were some obvious ones on runs too. Guessing they were tackling Schutt, et. al on every single play and refs call it 1/10th of the time. I mean, dare the refs to throw a flag every play...

They had Tommy Schutt on ice skates all day IMO. They also did a great job in slanting their oline and then hemming our end down with a tight end and then cutting back

yeah, I was puzzled as I got online after the game and saw criticism of McMillan.

You could take the mutant son of Butkus and Lawrence Taylor and if he has to defeat an OL with a clean shot at him all day there are going to be running lanes.

some of those were Kwon not actually filling the hole but taking on the block and not disengaging. But most of the criticism of Kwon was getting flattened consistently by the actual ball carrier. He was almost always on his back after being pushed back 3 yards after contact. I saw one 3rd and 2 play where the d-line actually ran a stunt like they expected a pass and completely vacated the hole that the RB ran through for the 1st down +10 yards. head scratcher.

and Schutt...well, his play yesterday was worthy of a Cosby count marathon.

Kwon still is learning the position. Eventually, he'll be a fine player Until then, he'll have his struggles.
They were running a lot of counter trey with some success. The defense got better as the day wore on against it. They scored on pass plays incidentally. One just a great play from their receiver.

MSU has REAL problems against the pass right now. Rank #107 Giving up 277yards a game!
And the problem is they probably won't get that fixed this year because of depth issues and injuries. That will get them beaten at some point.

In the Silver Bullets defense, being at the game and watching every play replayed on the big screen, it was incredible the amount of holding that was going on. I have never seen an OLine hold more in my entire life watching football. You could see our guys complaining quite a bit to the refs too after the plays were over. It was unreal how bad they were holding. I understand at the college level you can hold if you have your hands inside the shoulder and are not extended for the most part, but I am talking each hand on the outside of the shoulder and just steering our guys. I was giving the refs hell from the C Deck lol.

I'd have to find the quote but the Western Michigan Head Coach even said to the media that they were holding. Said that they had a freshman and sophomore trying to block Bosa.

Fleck basically admitted their plan to block OSU's d-line was to hold every single play.

I am finally watching the game (had to help a friend move ALL FREAKING DAY on Saturday). So far, it is definitely a counter play where they catch the end or any DL trying to pull with massive obvious holding.

Edit: I totally quoted the wrong post? I thought I was quoting one discussing whether it was a counter.

So I totally screwed up and quoted the wrong Jaxbuck post. Then I see a "Jaxbuck likes this" at the bottom. I definitely take this as a "ha ha ha look at the idiot that's funny" like. :)
