2015 tOSU Defense Discussion

There have been numerous complaints about the refs for this game. They were BAD!
This must have been one of the, if not the worst referee group we've had in recent years.
Just plain incompetent.

LATE TOUCHDOWN DENIALS AT INDIANA SIGN OF GROWTH FOR OHIO STATE DEFENSE

60979_h.jpg,qitok=6n0ncNrz.pagespeed.ce.xRjSE7bAai.jpg

Luke Fickell's been around the Ohio State block more than a few times in his life, especially in regards to defense.

Ohio State's co-defensive coordinator was born and raised in Columbus. He played for the Buckeyes under John Cooper from 1992-96, blossoming into one of the best defensive linemen in program history. After a brief stint in the NFL, Fickell returned as a grad assistant under Cooper in 1999, before taking a defensive line coaching position with the University of Akron in 2000-01. Then, Jim Tressel made Fickell his special teams coordinator in 2002. The man with 212 career tackles and now a pair of national championship rings hasn't left since.

It's that special 2002 season under Tressel, though, that Fickell brought up Monday when asked about his defensive unit's growth in stopping Indiana quarterback Zander Diamont's final pass attempt in a 34-27 victory Saturday.

"You can look back, I think in 2002, I think we had four games come down to the last play. It’s a growing opportunity," Fickell said. "You can’t design that kind of pressure, you can’t manufacture those situations to put guys in."

#87 for Indiana with a laughably obvious offensive pass interference that, predictably, was not flagged.

Every team that we have played has been there "Bowl Game" this year. Now we are the "hunted" instead being the hunter like last year. And with the offense sputtering like it has at times, you have to wonder how the defense can keep up with such intensity game after game. You would think that at some point they wish they could get a break once in a while. It would be nice at some point we could see the offense sustain some kind of long drives and scores, giving the defense a break once in while. Fickell and his crew are really doing a fabulous job. Kuddos to them for that.

OHIO STATE CURRENTLY WORKING THROUGH SOME DEPTH CONCERNS IN ITS DEFENSIVE BACKFIELD

61023_h.jpg,qitok=3jkEulGz.pagespeed.ce.WZ1qNhyFXv.jpg

When Ohio State redshirt sophomore cornerback Gareon Conley left Saturday’s game against Indiana in the first half with a shoulder injury, it didn’t take long for the Hoosiers to target Conley’s backup: redshirt freshman Marshon Lattimore.

In fact, Indiana went after Lattimore on the very first pass attempt it had after Conley left the game. It was a 15-yard completion despite a penalty committed by Lattimore.

The fact the Hoosiers did this wasn’t surprising in itself; any time a starter for the opposition goes out, especially at a position like cornerback, you’d be hard-pressed to find a team that won’t directly try to attack the next player into the game. It was designed to expose a lack of depth by Ohio State in the defensive backfield.

The Buckeyes have been playing without their starting nickel back, Damon Webb, for the last three games. Webb was suspended prior to the Northern Illinois game for “a violation of athletics department policy.” There is no timetable on his return at this point in time.

On Saturday, Ohio State was also without junior safety Cam Burrows, who was the team’s starting nickel in Webb’s place and also a backup safety. Burrows is out indefinitely with an injury to his foot.

So, Lattimore was moved to the starting nickel role against the Hoosiers in addition to his backup spot at corner. But when Conley went down, that changed a lot of things, and suddenly the Buckeyes had to make adjustments on the fly.

“We’ve got a little depth issue right there,” safety Vonn Bell said Monday. “It’s next man up. Marshon’s ready to play. He executed what he had to do.”

I would say yes had we not gave up 14 points when we needed to shut them down. Now it's a team game and the blame goes onto all facets of the team when we don't put a team away. In saying that the defense certainly could've played much better (particular in the 4th).

Heck if you just take away the middle schooler going 75 yards for a touchdown I'd say it was a solid effort. That said we let up when we couldn't afford to let up on defense. I know McMillan was out the final quarter but just as the offense got going the defense crapped out. If we can get both to play to potential we will see scores start going to the 52-10 variety.

I really just meant that overall, they've (at least relative to the offense) kept the momentum and level of play that they had at the end of last year. No defense is going to be perfect and we're going to let a big one go now and then, but they're aggressive, talented, and they tackle well. If not for the defense's play, we wouldn't be 5-0.

In true team first fashion, the defense steps forward to take some of the heat off the offense for a while.

What exactly in the fuck was I watching today? A QB who can't throw, who has no intention of throwing just running roughshod.

These guys just can't stand prosperity.

I was surprised that we just never adjusted throughout the game to contain the QB. It seemed like the defensive calls were playing right into what Hill wanted to do. Safety play still remains suspect as does our tackling angles.

I'm not sure there was that much adjustment to be had sadly. Most of the time we had one guy running free at the qb and running back. Sadly 90% of the time the chose the chase the running 75% of the time the were wrong. Players should have decided to take the QB away first but that's not really a scheme thing. That's a the QB keeps it 75% of the time get him thing. That and he made our dline look silly and slow on just about every roll out

Totally mind boggling. We have two really good man cover corners out there and a couple of ball hawks at safety. You would think we'd load the box with more support to really force 3rd and longs on the offenses we face. Not sure what the deal is.

That's what I don't get? The problem with our defensive alignment is our 3rd linebacker is in the slot 90% of the time. This leaves the box with 6 defenders in it because our safeties play 15 yards from the LOS. Like you mentioned I'm shocked we don't trust our corners more (besides every big play has been due to our safeties) because I really think if we dropped another guy into the box and eliminated the run teams would have no answer for our defense.

I don't see it changing but the game plan we had for Wisconsin last year was beautiful. We constantly had 8 in the box and trusted our dbs to eliminate things out wide. I wouldn't expect shutouts but anything more than 14 points to a team like Maryland shouldn't happen.

I'm a little disappointed in Tyvis' play this year to be honest. He did this last year with most of our huge plays we gave up and he is the culprit on many big plays this year too.

1. Big play to Indiana this year and last
2. Oregon hit him for 70
3. Alabama hit him for 52
4. Today he missed the tackle that sprung the QB for the long run
5. Bell was looking for help to the inside on the long pass play to Maryland today (Powell jumped the under route for some reason)
6. Tyvis was late getting to Braverman on his long TD

Tyvis has great ball skills but IMO not the best tackler and his angles are horrible. He also tends to blow his assignment a which lead to Bell turning around and giving him the WTF hand gesture.

Also Lee has been very quiet the last few weeks. He's due for a big game soon.
