2015-16 Ohio State Quarterback Discussion

Jones is definitely the starter at this point. I don't think JT is going to see the field short of an injury or in mop up duty. That said the play calling has to change to meet CJ. No more options of any kind and just stop with the QB draw.

I agree with everything you said, unfortunately.

Kind of telling that they they didn't trust Cardale to throw the ball in the 4th quarter to put the game away. Reverted to Tresselball there.

Feeling really apprehensive about this now. Those last few series demonstrated that the Coaches don't trust their own choice here...

Is it that they don't trust CJ, or that that's the staff's the approach in tight games? Because I seem to recall the identical ultra-conservative approach in the second half of the PSU game, particularly after JT threw the INT that was returned for a TD.

JT was injured and not throwing well at all -- so no, they didn't trust him.
One need only look at Bama to see how Urban usually goes about these situations. Not afraid to throw it downfield with everything on the line... but against Indiana, we're now gun shy.

Actually, the play calling against Alabama in the fourth quarter was quite conservative if you go back and re-watch the game, the long bomb try late being about the only exception to that rule.

After thinking about this over night I don't feel like we have a starting QB right now that will be able to lead this team to a Big 10 title, let alone a national championship. He is a one dimensional QB who can throw a bomb but doesn't necessarily have the touch and accuracy to routinely hit the short passes. There is 0 threat that a team has to game plan for him to run the option which makes the read option absolutely pointless. The read option is a staple of an Urban Meyer offense and we basically need to scrap it to be able to run an offense that #12 can be average at. I am sick of hearing people say that he is playing "ok". We have an all Big 10 record setting QB on the bench and we are willing to settle for just ok? He doesn't need to light the world on fire every game but he needs to be able to put together a complete game and show that he is progressing as a QB. He has not done that. For those that say he has, when is the last time he hasn't thrown an interception or fumbled the ball? Never. The deep ball was supposedly his forte but without Devin Smith, they haven't been good. Lots of underthrown ones and he isn't throwing receivers open. He is waiting until they come open to throw it, which is allowing defenders to catch up and make a play on the ball. With CJ as the QB, this offense has no identity or leadership. When things got bad last year in the Penn St. game, JT took it upon himself to lead the team to victory. In my opinion on the field it doesn't look like CJ is showing much in the way of leadership. At this point, CJ is our QB and I don't think we will see a switch but I also don't think that this offense can have a true identity with him at the helm.

Backed up in our own TD... yes, it was conservative.
Even so, we got a 1st down strictly running (incl Cardale), and a TD by Eze.
Running 3-and-outs, when Indiana is playing everyone on the line and decent field position... and not going for a single play-action against a weak opponent? That shows complete lack of confidence in the QB.

This post, and this thread in general, really is Exhibit A of the backup QB being the most popular guy in town. Everything that doesn't go exactly right for the OSU offense is more ammo for what JT "could have done." I swear that some people around here think JT Barrett is Joe Montana, Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, and Peyton Manning all rolled into one.

I don't think anyone thinks that. I think everyone here thinks JT would have more command of the offensive huddle, and players would respond better to JT if given the proper opportunity. I personally don't think a QB change will happen at this point in the season, but Cardale's lack of confidence is certainly showing in the play calling department, and certainly having an effect on the rest of the offense.

Cardale deserves the job. The offense has been perfect with him at the helm. Wait a minute. That's not right.

It's just odd the quote last year when JT beat out Cardale and the coaches just said "the offense would stall with Cardale at the helm.....JT seemed to move it better down the field."

And yet this year the offense doesn't stall with Cardale, it never gets going to begin with.

Call it intangibles. Call it coincidence. I don't care what you call it. The Big 10 record holder is riding the pine while the 2015 offense is awful. And with regards to the back up QB being the most popular player, in the typical case the back up is unknown and unproven. Doesn't apply here at all.

You're right. Urban Meyer is starting Jones over Barrett, certifiable proof that he knows nothing about football. Perhaps you should give him a call and talk some sense into him. While you're at it, call JT and tell him to remind Urban at practice tomorrow that he's a Big Ten record holder and should be starting as a result. When JT starts the Maryland game and throws for 500 yards and 7 TDs, we'll all have you to thank.
