2015-16 Ohio State Quarterback Discussion

I'm sorry you don't like facts.

I'm sorry Urban doesn't like facts. If he would just listen to facts and reason, as you've so eloquently set forth in your post, OSU would be 5-0 with an average margin of victory of 50+ points. Instead, we have to deal with Urban Meyer's program. Any chance you can apply for the job? Meyer clearly isn't interested in winning anymore--he's more interested in starting an inferior QB like Jones than he is in winning.

You do realize that Urban Meyer can make a mistake right? No one said that the margin of victory would be 50+ points for every game. We are just stating our OPINIONS that this Offense would have more of an identity and that JT would have more command of the entire playbook. No one is arguing that we are winning but are we winning because of CJ or are we winning strictly because the D is stepping up and carrying this team? I would honestly be interested in hearing how Cardale grades out on Mondays after each game. Is he getting better from week to week? I think he does get better at some things but it seems every time he takes a step forward with one thing, he takes a step back in another aspect. He just needs to put together a complete game, with no turnovers, not hold the ball too long and take unnecessary sacks and be more accurate. Even if he didn't have huge yardage numbers, if he was able to do this I think a lot of people wouldn't be so critical of him when he does just play "ok".

I'd be perfectly fine with VTech-like numbers. Maybe a few more pass attempts and closer to 250... but that general feeling.
His TD:int ratio is probably always going to be under 2:1, but he can make up for it in other areas. If he can't hit the deep ball, is making late decisions over the middle, getting sacked when the OLine gives him all year... the turnovers that go with all that is going to kill them sooner or later.
I have faith he can turn it around. I hope he does. I want both these guys to succeed really bad. The staff says it's Cardales year... so make it happen son. Reward their confidence by improving, working hard, and not getting down on yourself or your developing WR corps.

After thinking about this over night I don't feel like we have a starting QB right now that will be able to lead this team to a Big 10 title, let alone a national championship. He is a one dimensional QB who can throw a bomb but doesn't necessarily have the touch and accuracy to routinely hit the short passes. There is 0 threat that a team has to game plan for him to run the option which makes the read option absolutely pointless. The read option is a staple of an Urban Meyer offense and we basically need to scrap it to be able to run an offense that #12 can be average at. I am sick of hearing people say that he is playing "ok". We have an all Big 10 record setting QB on the bench and we are willing to settle for just ok? He doesn't need to light the world on fire every game but he needs to be able to put together a complete game and show that he is progressing as a QB. He has not done that. For those that say he has, when is the last time he hasn't thrown an interception or fumbled the ball? Never. The deep ball was supposedly his forte but without Devin Smith, they haven't been good. Lots of underthrown ones and he isn't throwing receivers open. He is waiting until they come open to throw it, which is allowing defenders to catch up and make a play on the ball. With CJ as the QB, this offense has no identity or leadership. When things got bad last year in the Penn St. game, JT took it upon himself to lead the team to victory. In my opinion on the field it doesn't look like CJ is showing much in the way of leadership. At this point, CJ is our QB and I don't think we will see a switch but I also don't think that this offense can have a true identity with him at the helm.

Excellent post. I miss the read option, although when we do run it now I just SMFH and think WTF? I need to see Cardale improve, and he doesn't seem to be doing that. I would love to see a bullet 15 yard out pass to Mike T, with Cardale letting it fly when big Mike was at 14 yards getting ready to make his move. Instead we get the Oline for holding because Cardale has held it for 15 seconds, not stepped up, and instead fled the pocket and then chunks it OB off his back foot. Tired of watching that play.

I'm so curious to be a fly on the wall at a practice session, if JT hasn't been able to take the job from Cardale. It truly must be something that Cardale is showing during the week, nthat he hasn't shown on Saturdays to keep this job. I'm riding with Cardale, since the coaches are, in hopes that what he's shown them, he shows us for the rest of the season

Immediately following the game, Urban stated that the QB performance must be fixed. He knows it's bad just like most fans. I don't know that JT would be better, but Urban said it himself. The QB performance is unacceptable. There are other problems as well, but the most glaring problem, and the one he specifically called out, was QB. I'm glad he sees the problem even if he can't fix it.

Cardale hasn't received a Champion grade yet in 5 games.

Give me 12-20 with 210 yards 2 TDs and 0 ints with CJ and it's perfect. Run Zeke, run samuel, run braxton, and then go play action.

Buckeyesin07- CJ has 5td and 5int and like has been mentioned the offense is horrendous while the big ten player of the year sits the bench. Personally I would've liked to had seen JT with a week of prep work but I realize that's not happening anytime this year unless the wheels come off (which may happen yet).

I don't get how JT was decided as the starter in early camp in 14 (which tells me how decisive it was) and now this year he can't beat out the same kid?

Doesn't add up to me.

There's a difference between recognizing that Jones is making mistakes/there may be a problem and blindly assuming JT Barrett is the solution. I'm in full agreement with the former. But to say that the latter immediately follows from the former is lazy thinking that ignores on the field performance.

Part of me wonders if Urban made a decision to try and get Cardale drafted. Or if that has anything to do with why he's been given the benefit of the doubt when JT sits the bench.

Cardale can play like a championship level QB, but he has not... maybe Urban feels as if it's still coming. Who knows.

I think to be honest Urban has gave CJ the benefit of the doubt due to winning the NC for us and then deciding to come back. "Hey coach I'm coming back!" And then urban goes "oh sweet that's neat but JT is starting" in hind sight CJ was probably going to start from a loyalty stand point.

I think CJ can be awesome in our offense but only when used correctly. CJ is best suited to throw 20 times a game after working teams over with our running game. He is not built to throw high 20s or low 30s and to be the focal point of the offense. Think of Russell Wilson when he was at Wisconsin when wisky had monte ball and really used Russell well off play action.

We need Cardale to be solid for 20 throws and not Medicare for 30. Besides when we talk about not giving our speed enough touches that's a way to get more touches which is to take the ball out of Cardales hands 10 snaps a game to split those carries among Braxton/Samuel first.

We need to be more of a 300/200 split on offense rush to pass. Or a 65/35 split run to pass.

Besides we have so many motions, formations, personnel, and set up plays that I think if mixed correctly we can pound the ball for the majority of the game without being loaded up on. Then the second they load up THAT'S when you have CJ launch one deep off PA.

I think this thread needs to be closed before the hair pulling and bitch slapping starts.

Cardale deserves the job. The offense has been perfect with him at the helm. Wait a minute. That's not right.

It's just odd the quote last year when JT beat out Cardale and the coaches just said "the offense would stall with Cardale at the helm.....JT seemed to move it better down the field."

And yet this year the offense doesn't stall with Cardale, it never gets going to begin with.

Call it intangibles. Call it coincidence. I don't care what you call it. The Big 10 record holder is riding the pine while the 2015 offense is awful. And with regards to the back up QB being the most popular player, in the typical case the back up is unknown and unproven. Doesn't apply here at all.

What happens next? You be the judge.

I'm getting sick and tired of having to take 10 minute breaks during my busy day to send telepathic messages to Meyer...

URBAN MEYER SAYS OHIO STATE CONSIDERED PUTTING J.T. BARRETT IN AT QUARTERBACK IN THE RED ZONE

"We've thought about it; we've had that conversation," Meyer said. "At this time, we haven't made any decisions on that right now."

Here is a real probability. Next year, both could be gone.
