2015-16 Ohio State Quarterback Discussion

Excerpted from the Ozone:

"First of all, both of them [quarterbacks] are great leaders, but J.T., he’s just one of those guys where he grabs everybody’s attention when he’s on the field," said senior tight end Nick Vannett. "That’s his show, he’s out there, he’s the true field general, and he just executes really well."

"He just takes control of the whole situation," he said. "Whatever’s going on out there on the field, he’s the one in charge and he grabs the attention of everybody. So everybody’s listening to what he says and when you’ve got someone like that at quarterback, it definitely gives you confidence as an offensive unit."

"He’s able to run, he can make guys miss, he has good speed, he’s shifty, he’s just a great guy," said sophomore cornerback Gareon Conley. "He just has a lot of confidence and leadership and he shows it very well on the field."

"I feel like he’s more in charge of everything," Vannett added. "He’s got a louder voice. When you’ve got a leader like that at quarterback, people are going to listen to him and respect him. Not that they didn’t Cardale, but I feel like he’s got a greater feel of being a leader out there on the field."

The game against Rutgers was the most efficient and potent this offense has looked all season! And a big reason so many JT backers wanted him starting, he gets the ball to the playmakers and spreads the ball around. Tonight we saw why our offense was ranked as the most dangerous in the nation, and we saw a lot of weapons getting utilized.

I was actually hoping to see Cardale get the 4th quarter and really try to wing it some. I do see more now that it was the system they were trying to use with him that caused him to start to fail. It was probably his struggles to read defense and the lack of a go to deep threat that caused him to not look as good. I think if he takes this time to reflect on that and work on the things he does not do well, it will be better for him in the long run.

The way JT was getting twisted around early on on that turf had me holding my breath for sure. Cardale has to be ready.

CJ operates best with simple reads and that's not a insult but just human nature. Who wants to be rushed/blitzed while trying to go through reads? I know I wouldnt... CJ is best when they call a designed play with a clear end result with no reading options.

JT may be the best QB I've ever seen with the read option and its now clear that the zone read is what makes this offense really hum.

I feel bad for CJ because what he did last year was impressive. However we can be uncomfortable trying to fit a offense to a certain player or we can go with the perfect match. It's not Cardales fault that JT is just a great fit for the offense.

To the contrary, I'm more than happy that this QB controversy finally appears to have been settled. Pardon me if I didn't think JT's underwhelming performance out of the bullpen at the beginning of the season didn't help resolve the situation (a fact which Urban stated many times). Obviously, JT can't turn the ball over in the red zone like he did last night, but otherwise he performed brilliantly. Good for him.

1 TO vs 5 TD, I'm ok with that, especially with the way the offense moved and controlled the game. The defense actually seemed to feed off the positivity generated by the offense and JT's leadership. This was the first game this season where I saw a Buckeye team enjoying playing football.

To be fair if his own team wouldn't have stopped his run there I don't think it would have happened.
