Head Coach
The coaches had to put Braxton in to get some sort of running threat at the QB position. They were trying to replicate the best of both worlds (Cardales arm and a mobile QB) but in the end the coaches went with the guy who can do both equally as well.Frankly, I don't know that there was a way to pull of the season without expecting some of this. We all know that the backup QB is the most popular guy in town, right?
That said, I do feel bad for CJ. I was one who expected that JT would win the job going into the season but without a doubt, am behind whoever the staff decides to put on the field.
However, as someone else said earlier, I think that there were multiple examples of play calling that didn't put CJ in a position to move the team down field effectively. While I love Brax as much as anyone, him being in the wildcat without the ability to throw the ball... and an empty backfield? Come on... we all know how that ends. Sadly, I think that CJ has been on the field way too many times when those types of plays were called. I don't have any stats to back up my observations, but I kinda have a feeling that if we looked at it, the types of plays called when CJ was on the field didn't bode well for long sustained drives. I do acknowledge that there have been plenty of examples where the supposed strengths of CJ weren't well displayed this year as well. Graduations, I'm sure, hurt us there. I'm sure that a new QB coach as well as OC also may have had an impact as well.
At this point what I hope most for is for JT to take over the team and be super effective. Have the chance to run the score up a bit and let the QBs alternate when we have the game basically in hand. There's only one statistic that is meaningful for the rest of the season... that's the W-column. Get that done and minimize injuries and we'll be fine.
I do not feel that CJ was set up to fail from a play calling stand point. He was given every opportunity to end this debate and seize control but it never happened. CJ wasn't helped by a banged up and ill equipped WRs on deep routes however. This offense was recruited and built to have a running QB who also can utilize PA passing and the talent around the QB reflects that.
We had to scratch the best staple play we had over the last 4 years just to accommodate CJ. It was never going to work and I steadfastly thought JT would be starting by years end. It was truly a round peg in a square hole situation IMO.
Even when CJ played well I always came away thinking "man something just seems off" whether that's punting too many times, too many turnovers, or a number of mishandled snaps it just always seemed to be disjointed a little to me.
CJ will always be remembered in Columbus and I'll always remember him positively but this was just bound to happen IMO.
