2015-16 Ohio State Quarterback Discussion

Frankly, I don't know that there was a way to pull of the season without expecting some of this. We all know that the backup QB is the most popular guy in town, right?

That said, I do feel bad for CJ. I was one who expected that JT would win the job going into the season but without a doubt, am behind whoever the staff decides to put on the field.

However, as someone else said earlier, I think that there were multiple examples of play calling that didn't put CJ in a position to move the team down field effectively. While I love Brax as much as anyone, him being in the wildcat without the ability to throw the ball... and an empty backfield? Come on... we all know how that ends. Sadly, I think that CJ has been on the field way too many times when those types of plays were called. I don't have any stats to back up my observations, but I kinda have a feeling that if we looked at it, the types of plays called when CJ was on the field didn't bode well for long sustained drives. I do acknowledge that there have been plenty of examples where the supposed strengths of CJ weren't well displayed this year as well. Graduations, I'm sure, hurt us there. I'm sure that a new QB coach as well as OC also may have had an impact as well.

At this point what I hope most for is for JT to take over the team and be super effective. Have the chance to run the score up a bit and let the QBs alternate when we have the game basically in hand. There's only one statistic that is meaningful for the rest of the season... that's the W-column. Get that done and minimize injuries and we'll be fine.
The coaches had to put Braxton in to get some sort of running threat at the QB position. They were trying to replicate the best of both worlds (Cardales arm and a mobile QB) but in the end the coaches went with the guy who can do both equally as well.

I do not feel that CJ was set up to fail from a play calling stand point. He was given every opportunity to end this debate and seize control but it never happened. CJ wasn't helped by a banged up and ill equipped WRs on deep routes however. This offense was recruited and built to have a running QB who also can utilize PA passing and the talent around the QB reflects that.

We had to scratch the best staple play we had over the last 4 years just to accommodate CJ. It was never going to work and I steadfastly thought JT would be starting by years end. It was truly a round peg in a square hole situation IMO.

Even when CJ played well I always came away thinking "man something just seems off" whether that's punting too many times, too many turnovers, or a number of mishandled snaps it just always seemed to be disjointed a little to me.

CJ will always be remembered in Columbus and I'll always remember him positively but this was just bound to happen IMO.

Its not hard to see, the offense is playing better with JT.

I can understand CJ being upset, but with that being said it's not like he wasnt given a fair opportunity to take the job and run with it.

I will never downplay what Jones means to the program, but I hope that he handles his demotion with the same grace as JT did in August. He is only a play away from having the keys again and I hope that he prepares that way and waits for his next opportunity.

Agreed. Jones had some very nice numbers in the three games prior to the PSU game, but red zone production ultimately seemed to be his downfall.

It'll be interesting to see how this unfolds going forward. My read on Urban's presser yesterday was that Jones is still going to get playing time (in other words, if people are thinking JT is now going to be under center until OSU is up 40 points, I think those people are going to be disappointed). The question, then, is what happens if Jones starts outplaying JT? OSU essentially has three easier games (at Rutgers, vs. Minnesota and at Illinois) until the real season starts (vs. MSU, at Michigan, and hopefully postseason play). The last thing this team needs is for there still to be a QB controversy after the next three games. I actually thought the approach in the Maryland game was the most effective the offense has been all season (Jones until the red zone, JT in the red zone).

Some forward thinking franchise is going to take him in the 4-6th round and let him get tons of reps on a practice squad over the next few years.
He can be a productive pro with a couple of years of practice and film study in a pro-style offense.

Maybe lost in translation, but I thought everyone I listed was a "true WR" -- for various reasons (mostly injuries and youth), Thomas is the only big contributor right now.
But not for lack of recruiting in my imo
there is absolutely a lack of recruiting at outside wr due to losing a lot of recruiting battles. Noah Brown and Campbell are the entire list after Thomas, excluding true freshmen who shouldn't be expected to be ready. Dixon, Clark or McLaurin could contribute out there, but they aren't the biggest guys. Recruiting has been great except at DT and outside WR and those are two big depth problems right now (of course, corner is also but they had a huge amount of attrition there).

They missed on a number of outside wr targets. They should be sitting pretty moving forward once the current class matures and the 2016 and 2017 classes do the same.

I am a boisterous JT supporter because of his fit to the scheme and his maturity. CJ played last season with nothing to lose with house money. He also had a month of prep for the sugar bowl and 10 days for the NC game. The week leading up to the B1G title game OSU was not in class. Plenty of time for prep.

My point is that graduations and injuries aside CJ had plenty of time to put work in to make that 3 game run. Now that there is plenty of film out there it is easier to defend him week by week.

Now, I hope he handles his business now more than ever. One injury away from being the man again. Buckeyes will need him at some point again to win it all. I fully believe that.

You're just trolling now.
Not really... Mike Bennett went in the 6th and CJ may slip past the 3rd round. Cardale was only going to play himself into the first round this year. Unfortunately he's probably played himself OUT of the 2nd round at this point. 2nd round would be best scenario here and at worse he could slip further due to his decision making (twitter and ints).

It all doesn't matter. Brady was a 6th round pick and now look at him. Given the right system CJ can be a serviceable to good NFL qb. Personally I see CJ as a late 2nd or early 3rd guy but if he says something out of frustration again he can say hello to the 4th round next year or the year after

QB's careers can be so long that it's probably better to be a low pick to a good team than a high pick to a bad team. CJ needs a couple years behind a vet to learn what it takes to play QB in the NFL. If he's good enough he'll more than make up for what he loses in the initial contract.

McShay has him as the 4th best QB prospect. I'll trust his knowledge of the draft over your irrelevant references to where an OSU DT was drafted and what you think of his twitter handle.

Sure Cardale... worry about preparing for Rutgers

Throwing McShay out there lol.... my point was Michael Bennett was once a projected 1st rounder (late 1st) and look what happened to him. Now throw in CJ'S struggles and some of his untimely decisions via social media and YOU could very well see CJ slip into the 3rd round.

Why are you so personally invested in CJ?
