2015-16 Ohio State Quarterback Discussion

I would hope JT's running ability would help open that up. I just dont think it did last night because hey only threw it 4 times
This may be the most over looked thing in all of this... teams respect zeke's abilities to run and now with JT back running the zone read again there's another option that MUST BE accounted for on all drives.

The running abilities of JT IMO will open up the passing game particularly on play action. You saw the throw to Curtiss Samuel last night because that happened due to how effective we were on the ground.

I do agree though that this squad for as much talent as we stock piled with recruiting is really void of a true reciever that can get behind a defense. Not surprised with as many converted WRs that we have but we can still be a deadly passing attack either way. We just have to be a little more methodical with our approach

I think part of the issue for CJ was always looking for the deep ball or the safety flare. I am not sure that was the play calling or CJ just holding the ball too long. It would appear on the surface that there were few slants, outs, drag routes, rub routes, seam routes, etc. deployed. I am somewhat surprised that we are able to recruit top flight TEs as we rarely utilize them in the passing game. I hope with JT this trend will reverse itself.

I am not sure where you guys are getting we do not have a deep threat, and when I say that, I myself cannot see all of the receivers when I watch the game on TV because too often they are out of the picture, so I have no clue if they are open, covered, or behind the D or not.

Now the 1 game I did get to attend, WMU, I can tell you first hand we had receivers WIDE ASS OPEN well behind the DBs on at least 8 occasions. Samuel was behind the defense 3 times, and once by 8 yards. Marshall was also way behind the defense only to be under thrown by Cardale. In that game, the deep routes were more than just VERY OPEN, they were wide the fuck open and Cardale came up short on every single one of them, 5 to be exact, and 3 more times guys were behind the defense and he never threw it deep.

So no disrespect intended, but where are you guys getting that our receivers are not getting behind defenses? Are you guys attending the games, because that is the only way I have been able to judge whether or not they are getting open deep or not. I watch on the TV closely but too often the camera does not show the whole field. When you are in the bleachers, you see the entire field and at the WMU game, we got behind them all damn day only to have Cardale suck that day.

It's not just about getting behind the defense. Wide open intermediate receivers are being thrown behind, over and ahead of. Pretty much everywhere but where the ball is supposed to be.
Yes accuracy is an issue, but we aren't going downfield much this year. I'm not saying it is an insurmountable problem, but the change and drop off is noticeable.

Get it under control, dude. Or step away from the keyboard until you can find a more mature way to express your thoughts.

And, pro tip--that day, Cardale was 19/33 for 288 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT; Barrett was 1/3 for 0 yards, 0 TDs, and 1 INT.

As for the QB discussion, it would have been nice to see Barrett throw the ball around a bit more against Penn State. Clearly, Cardale was struggling. But Cardale also struggled earlier this year and Barrett wasn't able to step in and do any better. Barrett had the offense moving for the most part on Saturday, but it would have been nice to see him overcome his early season struggles throwing the ball. Had he done that, I think the answer as to who starts against Rutgers would be clear; as it stands, it wouldn't shock me to see Urban stick with Cardale (although I could just as easily see him going with Barrett).

We really only have 1 true WR playing, our leading receiver. The next 7 are Zeke, a TE and 2-3 converted RBs/HBs and 1-2 converted QBs (Could call Jalin a former HB or QB). We have a bunch of gadget players and really great athletes at WR, that doesn't lead to a working pro style system. Urban seems to be really great a recruiting the gadget players/ electric athletes, but not a lot of true WRs that are ready to play and this has been exasperated by injuries.

I think this is it.

Also, running down the field at full speed for a deep pass is not as simple as it sounds. We're spoiled because Devin Smith made it look stupid easy.

I've been a CJ guy, but after Saturday I don't know how they could go back to him. Maybe it's WR's, Herman, or having someone else breathing down his neck, but the offense just isn't getting it done while he is out there. I think they need to give the reigns to JT and see what he can do as the guy. I would have no fear that CJ would be ready to roll if given the opportunity like last year, but this team just moves better with JT.

Well, I think this controversy/question/discussion/enigma is about to get settled. If Cardale plays most of the game next week, I am going to have to admit that everything I thought I knew about QBing must be horribly flawed - and as you guys know, I'm terrible at admitting I'm wrong. It's like I tell my wife, I was wrong once, but I didn't like how it made me feel so I decided to not do it anymore.

Cardale will, and should, always be loved by all of us. He won 3 games last year that we wouldn't have won if he hadn't performed well. Given all that we have seen in those 3 games and thru 7 games this year, I suspect (don't know) that Herman was really good for Cardale. I think Tom put him in situations where he could succeed and gave him the confidence that he could make plays. I think he simplified things by giving him the green light to let it go deep, and if it wasn't there to take off or throw the ball away. This year the new OC's naturally tried to progress him - take this deep ball/power running offense to another level by having him read defenses and go through progressions. He just hasn't been able to pull it off. QBing, above all else, is about decision-making, and whether it is in the passing or option game, you can almost see him thinking about all of his options instead of reading, acting on the read, and making the right decision. And even tho throwing the ball downfield is his strength, he can't even do that because of the clutter in his head. Even if the basic idea is downfield passing and power running, getting first downs still requires an accurate pass for 8 yards with some touch on it. He fires those 90 mph and 3 feet wide. Then he yells at the receivers for not being where he wanted them to be. Receivers don't get where they are supposed to be when they aren't sure whether the ball is going to be 3 feet behind them, ahead of them, or over their head.

My impression is that when JT is in the game, the OL blocks better, Zeke runs better, the receivers play better, and even the defense plays better. That's the effect that happens throughout a team when the guy they trust is leading them.

So, this bullshit has gone on long enough. Urban needs to end it now.
