2015-16 Ohio State Quarterback Discussion

I Jones could've scored those two TDs? Maybe, but maybe not. He doesn't have JT's acceleration which can make a big difference in tight quarters

And I've got to believe that the defense reads the formations and keys differently depending on who's calling signals. Apples and oranges, soon to be apples, oranges and pineapples. That'll give Those Schools Up North lots to think about.

6 for 6 in the Red Zone after being 108th in the freaking country prior to this Saturday. End of story
Quoted in case missed. This week will be very telling if its the future of this offense. JT is the better run throw threat inside the 20. With him Zeke Miller Thompson and Marshall or Samuel on the fieldl, you have a run run run run pass pass run option.

hmmm..... outside of zeke and the o-line I really haven't seen much overly impressive from our offense yet this season.

if I were defending our o I would load the box as much as possible on every down regardless of distance, force anyone but zeke to run the ball, and double Thomas anytime he's on the field. I would be willing to take my chances with anyone else on the field, but im not letting either of those two guys do it if at all possible.

when I see our offense from a defensive mindset this is what I see. an elite rb and an elite oline. a very good qb (barrett or cardale), one wr and 3 slot guys. facing that configuration I would take my chances with cardale running vrs zeke and do everything in my power to deny the short pass against anyone but Thomas (who I would go out of my way to double like crazy). my focus on passing downs would be to deny the short pass and force someone not named Thomas to beat me on deep routes. while cardale is more than capable of throwing the deep ball well enough to beat any d in the ncaa. I don't think we have a legit deep threat at wr currently, and outside of Thomas I wouldn't be worried about anyone else developing into one over the course of a game.

do whatever razzle dazzle you want at qb, but outside of Thomas none of our wr's would worry me outside of their ability to run after the catch. just challenge the short routes as much as possible, do everything possible to keep the ball out of zeke's hands, and take your chances with the deep pass.

while we certainly have the talent to beat such a defense *cough*vt*cough*, that's where I would take my chances.
I would have agreed game 1, but Brax, Jalin and Samuel call have the ability to catch the ball downfield. None are as sure handed as Thomas (Jalin is close), but if you have two of those guys lined up one on one and the safety is always leaning towards Thomas, one of them will be able to get open. With Zeke as a check down I'll take that defensive scheme. Sucks that Zeke can't run it, but he could easily get 100 yards through the air as well if we are forced into a passing attack. A couple of those guys house one because they are playing too much pressure and you'll start to see the running lanes open up.

I'll be shocked if Barrett isn't named the starter for next week. I think he earned the job back tonight. I think his performance tonight was the kind of thing that Meyer has been waiting to see from him to justify putting him back ahead of Jones.

I think Barrett better suits the emerging identity of this team. With Jones as the QB it looks like they rely on receivers to beat DBs one-on-one, and since it's a depleted unit it hasn't been good enough. With Barrett I think they can get WRs open through scheme, since Barrett's effectiveness as a ballcarrier opens things up in the passing game.

I think besides waiting for somebody to take hold of the job, I think Urban Meyer has managed the quarterbacks and playcalling the way he has this season because he's hyper-aware of the beating his guys take when they run the quarterback as much as they have in the past. I think we're at a point now though where the timeshare/second-string situation has reduced the overall mileage they'd put on Barrett has been reduced, and they can start to rely on him a bit more without having to worry as much about him getting torn up. It's not just about the broken ankle - it's all the other dings and dents he took throughout the course of last season. Now we're more than halfway through the regular season, and Barrett has had barely more than a preseason-type workload. Might be time to turn him loose.

I agree, if we are unable (or unwilling) to threaten the field vertically, we need his running ability to keep the defense honest.

Still pretty baffled though as to why Michael Thomas doesn't get featured more in the pass game though. No one can guard him.

I think part of it is that secondaries pay more attention to him because they don't have to worry about the other guys. I think part of it is that he gets "NFL open" more than he gets "college open" and to date quarterbacks have not had the confidence, will, and/or skill to get him the ball in those situations where he's only somewhat open and not wide open.

I think Jalin and Braxton stretch the defense well, not like Devin did but both are solid deep threats.
We really only have 1 true WR playing, our leading receiver. The next 7 are Zeke, a TE and 2-3 converted RBs/HBs and 1-2 converted QBs (Could call Jalin a former HB or QB). We have a bunch of gadget players and really great athletes at WR, that doesn't lead to a working pro style system. Urban seems to be really great a recruiting the gadget players/ electric athletes, but not a lot of true WRs that are ready to play and this has been exasperated by injuries.

Agreed on that - but that doesn't matter much if you're talking about a stretch guy. Doesn't take much WR talent to run a fly route, just a matter of who is the fastest and being able to pull the safety and all of a sudden you're playing 10 on 9, we like those numbers. But agree on the lack of "real" WR's on this roster.

Well SOMETHING is missing in that regard because we cannot seem to get open deep at all.
