2014 Season Discussion

Lee doesn't play MLB, and his responsibilities are much different. Considering the option offense that Navy runs, the MLB is typically further back as it is up to him to see more of the field from side to side, potentially have responsibility for the pitch man, all the while coming up the middle when called. While Curtis was in the game, I saw him have at least three tackles. Perry had maybe a few more.

Good point about the MLBs. I'll add... It seems to me that playing the MLB that far off the line is the correct way to do it against a team like Navy. Play him to close to the line and he gets cut blocked before he has a chance to read the play, and then you're screwed.

Honestly didn't see much out of Grant he played too deep at MLB and wasn't around the ball much. Lee was in on a lot of plays and bell seemed to be in on a lot from the safety position. I think McMillian should start getting some shots.

Not to sound like a jerk, but I highly doubt it was Grant's decision to play "too deep". He lines up where the coaches tell him to line up...

I thought he looked pretty good out there, but it's tough to judge the full defense against Navy's O. Tyvis Powell missed too many tackles and the O-Line played like garbage...my only two negatives from the game.

3 tackles isn't much when there are no plays over your head. Never said lee was a MLB just said he was the only one consistently around the ball. Although the walk out backers didn't take away the pitch man very much. For as in your face as our defense was said to be they didn't make adjustments very well.

Sooo... if we compare this year with last, I don't see where there will be improvement. With a fair amount of regret, I'll surmise that my perpetual angst from the end of last year will continue to carry over. Teams will pass better than they had against other opponents and subsequently will score against our D, whereas our run game will continue to suffer and we won't be able to keep up.

Remainder of the year:

Kent State - Win
Cincinnati - Win?
Maryland - Even
Rutgers - Win?
Penn State - Even
Illinois - Win
Michigan State - Loss
Minnesota - Even
Indiana - Even
Michigan - Win?

I realize last night has left me down and pert near delusional, but I only see two undebatable wins (Kent and Illinois).

I decided to sober up and leave my thoughts in the morning...they are pretty much unchanged. I don't know what the hell happened last night but I will just say what we are all thinking/know...this team really is not that good. Without Braxton and a porous OL, I see 3 more losses at least. I think we drop one against Rutgers or Maryland, definitely lose to MSU, and drop to Minnesota (sneaky good team this year). I thought we were a 1 loss team without Miller but watching us lose in the 'Shoe at night to a mediocre team (cannot believe I am even typing that), time to get realistic.

The predictable overreactions are everywhere, less here than other places thankfully. Urban needs replaced, Barnett is a bust, blah, blah, blah. Urban knows what he is doing. His track record proves it. Barnett will be fine. He wasn't expected to be the starter this year until 2 weeks before the first game and it is obvious he needs more seasoning. He could also use some help from his offensive line and the people calling the plays.

Any hopes of contending for a title disappeared with Braxton Miller. Those who didn't want to accept it are dealing with that reality this morning. I think the comparisons to the 6-7 team of 2011 are premature, however. This team should still win more games than they lose.

In terms of undebatable wins, add Rutgers. They still suck. WSU sucks, don't let that game trick you. And that game is at home.

Navy did beat an improved Temple team yesterday, FWIW. 31-24.
It's worth nothing. We're still in the overreaction stage. Maybe post that in a few days.

What about Indiana? That game's at home too, and they beat Indiana St. by a whopping 18 points (28-10).

At this point, I'd say sure wins are Kent, Rutgers, Illinois and Indiana.

Pretty likely loss would be MSU and PSU (on the road, and their defense is playing well--I anticipate a game much like last night's).

Toss-ups are Cincinnati, Maryland, Minnesota and Michigan.

Who the F is Barnett? You mean Barrett.

But apart from that, spot on. I did expect at least 2 losses this year, but didn't think VT would've been one. But we can still improve enough to beat M State later in the year. The one thing that bothers me is that all the weapons we've stockpiled did not show any dividends.

I think this year is going to resemble 2009 in many ways. Very shaky play early on in the year with a loss at home against a mediocre team, and then another surprise loss to a bad team but a lot of improvement towards the end of the season.

My biggest concern (besides the OL) is actually the offensive play calling. It's the same as last year. Too many low percentage passes and they didn't do a good job of establishing any run game early. Not sure what Herman/Meyer is thinking.
