2014 Season Discussion

Horrible question, but I gotta ask for those in the know: if you can go to one home game this year, then what one are you going to? I've never been to The Game, but I have to admit that VT is very intriguing. Thoughts?
The Game. Went to the Texas game a few years back, several games vs random B1G teams, and two bowl games (Fiesta vs ND being one of them). Obviously the Texas game was awesome; but it's The Game and I don't believe the hype for the Va tech game will reach the Vince Young Longhorns hype. Even in their recent trend of not being good, there is magic in watching the Silver Bullets destroy winged helmets. The pageantry, tradition, excitement, rivalry. We have a non conference opponent every other year of similar quality to VaTech. No offense to the Hokies and I know it will be a phenomenal atmosphere and game, but if it's an either or choice...

I don't think it will reach Iowa 2009 or Purdue 2010 hype.

VaTech is part of a brief downturn in OOC opponents. They aren't close to USC, Texas (who is coming back), Oregon, Oklahoma, etc.

I expected that Rat Bastard to rip on me, but MD?!?! Damn.

Thanks to everyone else for their assistance. It's what I've been leaning towards since I've never been to The Game. But had to check.

If you have a chance to attend The Game, don't pass it up.

So is ESPiN's $CFB Future Power Rankings, an insider article. I don't have insider access, so I'd appreciate it if someone posts a summary, along with rankings if possible. But pretty standard that 'Bama is #1.

Ohio St was ranked #3, narrowly edged out by FSU's known talent and easier path to the title versus OSU having to rely on a lot of unknowns this coming season and date with Michigan St. Consider the gap between #4 LSU and #3 OSU is nearly as wide as between #3 OSU and #1 Alabama.

#1 Alabama 94.6
#2 Florida St 90.35
#3 Ohio St 89.95
#4 LSU 85.6
#5 Auburn 83.6

It was noted in the write-up of FSU that a Big Ten coach said they were as loaded right now as they were in Bowden's early/mid 90s heyday, with first rounders somewhere on the depth chart at every single position. The panel ranked FSU #1 in overall talent, ahead of even Alabama.

Description of OSU was not unique. Consensus is VT is not the team they were when scheduled; it's a one game season with MSU; Braxton is a Heisman favorite; LJ Sr is a great recruiter and stacking the roster for the future (Hilliard, Cornell); and a title run hinges on pups like Apple, Conley, and Kwon contributing. Concludes that current recruiting trends suggest OSU may pull away from the Big Ten (which is saying something considering they pretty much already had under Tressel).

I'm still extremely worried about the defense. I watched the Clemson game last night and forgot just how awful the 2013 defense was. Teams with a pulse were able to execute at will on that squad and I'm not sure what's going to change this season outside of coaching. I know that can make a difference, but my God 2013 was tough to watch. Some of the young guys need to be able to unseat some of the incumbents or the game in East Lansing might be moot by the time November rolls around.

I had the same thought watching the Clemson game last night as well. We either need Reeves, C. Grant, Camren Williams, Trey Johnson, and Powell (not so much to an extent as the others on Powell) to be completely different players, or we need the young guys to live up to their billing on paper. Lee is also a wild card but young and athletic. I could see Booker and McMillan passing the LBs I missed by mid-season (or earlier), I almost think it is certain that Reeves gets pass by Conley, Apple, Webb, Smith, or Lattimore, and Powell I am not as worried about seeing as how he is young and I think his short comings were more related to a confused scheme.

I think the scheme is absolutely going to improve performance quite a bit...be aggressive and let talent take over. Sure we will give up some plays, but we did last year anyways or just got picked apart relentlessly. Additionally, we have just acquired too much talent that one of our new LBs and one of our new DBs will step up. I still think a veteran or two need to really step up in the back 7 (looking at Perry and Powell) and if that happens, I think the front 4 is good enough to mask the overall youth in the back 7 when coupled with the new scheme. That being said, I have a lot of "ifs" in there and I am fairly concerned myself until I see otherwise.

Relax guys.... you were watching a defense that was playing two relative unknowns in Powell and Bell, was missing Roby, was without Noah Spence, was in a shitty scheme that featured a lame duck defensive coach (why take a pay cut to go elsewhere? Withers was given permission to save face).

Oh and tag Sammy freaking Watkins along with Clemsons all time passing leader Tajh Boyd and yes it will not look good.

We don't need miracles on defense we just need our defensive line to play like it always has and for our secondary to have a pulse. We don't need Booker or Burger to start and I honestly doubt any freshman is going to just take a spot and run with it at DB.

Perry will do fine, I'm a believer in our walkout LB Lee and I think Bell/Powell/Cam will do great at safety. Grant will be all B1G and we have options at the other CB position with Apple and Conley.

The one I am not sold on is Grant at MLB. I think he will do fine but he doesn't seem to stay healthy. I think if there's a spot were we could keep an eye out its there.

Overall I think our defense this year does better than last year by miles and there was a lot of variables that held back last years group.

I would be more comfortable if Clemson was an isolated incident...it was not. Every team that had a pulse lit us up and that game was simply a reminder to temper expectations for next year. I don't think any of us are predicting doomsday, just saying that defense is still a question mark heading into the season. I don't think anyone disputes that the talent is there, or that we are feeling more confident with Ash running the show. And I completely agree that I think Bell/Powell/Cam are primed to be very good players here.

As to freshman at DB...I almost think it is certain that a freshman (maybe redshirt) will start. Unless Reeves becomes a completely new player, one of Conley, Apple, Webb, etc. will pass him.

Yes lots of teams had their way with our defense but this was a defense with two first round picks on it that still was one of the worst ever to step on the field statistically. My god is the talent ever there on defense and if we struggle anywhere close to last year I'd imagine changes will happen. The talent is there but now can we just play fundamental football which remains to be seen and it may take until Cincinnati to truly see how far we have come
