2014 Offense Discussion

I can't help but think about the 2006 Florida Gators and all the similarities that could exist with the 2014 OSU team. Starring J.T. Barrett as Chris Leak, Cardale Jones as Tim Tebow, Dontre Wilson, Jalin Marshall and /or Curtis Samuel as Percy Harvin, the 2014 Ohio State defensive line as the 2006 Florida defensive line and Urban Meyer as Urban Meyer. Forget the TV commentators who prey on OSU fan paranoia... we're still in it (maybe more so). I love Braxton but we MIGHT be more complete because of the injury.
Probably not

What would help this offense (and their new starting QB) a lot would be executing a damn WR screen properly for a change. I get tired of seeing so many of those go for only 0-3 yards - whether it's an inaccurate or mis-timed throw, missed blocks or whatever. Those should be high-percentage plays and it seems like most of the time the WR can't get the ball in a position to gain yards or there are defenders already on top of him when he does. Start executing that (and maybe that's something Barrett can do on his end a little bit better than Miller) and it will go a long way to making the new players comfortable out there.

I was watching some reruns of games last year (mostly Oregon and A&M) and noticed how many big plays they hit off screens. We have never really executed the bubble and rocket screens like other teams...part of that was not having the right pieces. But now, we have many WRs/TEs that can block very well and also many playmakers to get it to. That is one play I think we will see a lot more of but you have to practice it a ton to get the timing and blocking down. On that note, I saw a ton of bubbles and quick hits on the camp videos MD has been posting, so I think undoubtedly we're going to see it a lot, especially with Braxton out.

Man, what a cool post! Think you're dead right. So............who do we make the loser in the bowl game (NC, of course)? Your call, Carmen!

I'm pretty sure I read some comments from JTs HS coach that he is very good at setting up screen passes (pretty sure on his 247 recruit profile?)

Of course college is different then HS but if he can bring that awesomeness this season it would be....awesome.

With Barrett taking the snaps in 2014, how does the preparation of the offensive line change? Seems the pass protection this next season needs to be stellar for the Buckeyes to have a shot at running the table. With Braxton, they might have gotten away with so-so pass protection, due to his running ability.

I don't think it will change to the extent you may think. JT can't "run a 4.3 in a phone booth" (Todd Blackledge) like Braxton can. But he does have some elusiveness and can certainly buy himself some time
until he finds an open receiver. Also I hope he is better at running the option and making the read in a timely fashion like Kenny did. Cornelius Green was so good at that, Braxton on the other hand often looked predetermined on what he was going to do.

So schools like San Diego State, Ohio and San Jose have the pieces to run bubble screens, but, the Buckeyes have not.. until now? I don't think I can agree with the above.

I put the WR/Bubble screen right up there with Dave....
I doubt the bubble screen would win 7 Big Ten Titles in 10-years. Still don't get the hate for Dave. Just win baby.

As life without Braxton Miller starts, Ohio State cranks up the tempo

...

The new offensive identity in life A.B. begins with Barrett, who led the first team throughout most of the Buckeyes' summer camp drills as Miller was eased back in after shoulder surgery in February. Barrett’s reputation for doing everything well but nothing exceptional has helped introduce a buzzword to his first year as a starter: “distributor.” Barrett’s job will be to find players in space, limit mistakes and move the chains. He is cerebral, grasps the entirety of the offense and is already considered by strength coach Mickey Marotti as one of the team’s three best leaders. Barrett’s smooth release and pretty spiral prompted numerous members of the Buckeyes staff who worked with Meyer at Florida to compare Barrett to former Gators QB Chris Leak.

“I’ll take that,” Meyer said with a smile. “I’m a big Chris Leak fan.”

Barrett’s high school coach at Wichita Falls Rider, Jim Garfield, summed up Barrett’s moxie and presence with one story from his sophomore year. In a tight game against Andress High School of El Paso, Garfield challenged his quarterback: “We need a touchdown now.” On the first snap of the series, Barrett dropped back, threw a deep ball and was so confident it would be completed for a touchdown he didn’t even watch. He just ran straight over to Garfield and asked, “How do you like that?”

“That’s what sets him apart,” Garfield said. “He has that confidence about him.”

Cont'd ...

Difference there is simply personnel...A&M/Oregon have superior talent and more importantly, have skilled position players almost identical to what we have accumulated. The last couple years we did not but with players like Dontre, Jalin, Samuel, EzE, etc. we would be stupid not to use them in space with screens and quick hits. Plus we have guys like D. Smith, Spencer, C. Smith, Thomas, Vannett, and Huereman that are exceptional blockers to set it up, we just need practice with the timing and execution. And I'm not saying we run those plays exclusively, just that we will see an uptick in them. Hell, UFM himself has said we will.

I don't disagree that we will see the plays, I just think the Buckeyes have had the talent to run this style of attack for many years. That was what I took issue with in your post. Perhaps I read into too much or maybe it was a misunderstanding.

They have always had the talent and correct personnel to run those plays. Just about everybody does, as you pointed out. The point is the Buckeye have lacked execution in running those type of plays in the past. They don't do it as well as most other teams who use it. When I mentioned it, I wasn't even calling for them to run more of them, I was just identifying it as an area for improvement/opportunity within the context who how the offense had already been run for the past couple seasons. I get tired of seeing lesser teams with lesser talent get better results with it because they simply execute it more precisely.

Kinda O/T, but the Buckeyes defend those plays just about as well as they run them. It pre-dates that game against Sammy Watkins and it predates Withers and Coombs being in charge of the secondary. I remember Toledo coming to the shoe and running those plays up and down the field all day a couple years ago. Everybody knew it was coming and it couldn't be stopped. They could stand to improve on those plays on both sides of the ball.

I was just about to say the reason OSU doesn't run screens well is that they're not running them against themselves ...
