I don't know if it's scheme or players requiring that we scheme this way, but receivers are regularly 5 yards open.
Well, how many times have we gotten beat deep playing press Cover 2 or Cover 1 man? As a couch coordinator I see mental breakdowns way too often, and defenders that can't or won't properly pattern match receivers. Add in the soft cushions, and it's no wonder even average receivers are wide open. With superior athletes you should teams to consistently beat you one-on-one while rattling the QB with a pass rush/occasional blitz. The few times we blitz and have the secondary 'run with your guy' without thinking we have either sacked the QB or gotten a turnover or stopped scrambles short of the LOS. That's how we played defense for most of the 2000s (other than bowl games, understandable) and were pretty successful.
I'm glad you pointed this out because it's true. But I will say that at least the line was getting pressure when we decided to dial it up a notch. Our secondary,on the other hand, cannot seem to stay with receivers for more than 1.5 seconds. It's going to be hard to be in the backfield in 1.5 seconds on every throw.Noah Spence is not performing at the level expected of him given the preseason hype.
Jamal Marcus came in on two third downs in the second half and flat out dominated. He almost single handedly stopped those drives and forced field goals. Absolutely huge contribution from him.
I agree that three man rushes and soft zones are infuriating, but if guys like Spence could show the type of explosive rush that Jamal Marcus showed on those plays consistently throughout the game, it wouldn't be as big of a problem.
I guess that is what Going through my mind last night. I do not know if we have the cornerbacks to play press coverage or if the coaches just do not want to play press coverage. I guess I do not understand who is really in charge of the defense. If Urban is the HC, I would think that he would want a more aggressive defense he would convey that to the DC's but maybe not. I guess I would really like to see a more aggressive defense and that three-man rush has never been a good thing. I would probably say a little more but would like to stay on the board for a while.I don't know if it's scheme or players requiring that we scheme this way, but receivers are regularly 5 yards open.
Thank you! No one wanted to say that. I really hope there are changes in store for our pass defense, because what we're doing, isn't working.IMO you have just described a coaching problem more than a personnel problem.
