2012 Defensive Line Discussion

I have to respectfully disagree about the "fear" of our pass rush. I felt the pass rush was practically non-existent last season. Unless OC's is something I misunderstood lol. I think Williams, Bennett, Hayes, Miller, Spence, Washington, Pittman, etc. will cause some pass rush fear though.

My biggest point would be that our pass rush in terms of sack numbers has been low since 2003. eyt our defense has consistently been one of the best.

If you look at systems across the Big 10, they have also been consistently different against the Buckeyes. Teams have gameplanned for the Buckyes, and I believe that is one of the reasons are sacks are so low. QB's have been taught to hit there third step and the ball better be gone....moreso than a QB playing a regular opponent.

Paty of the quick-hitting game may be how far we have consistently had our cb's play off the LOS as well....I just think a pass rush is nearly impossible when teams aren't giving you a chance based on play design.

I have to disagree with u as well. Teams in the big 10 don't fear our pass rush at all. I don't see the different gameplan that u mention, I've seen us get lit up by opposing qbs because we can't consistently get to the qb or at least make his job difficult. Alabama didn't have that much more sacks than us but watching their games, the opposing qbs were constantly running for their lives. I saw qbs like jacory harris, Brantley, denard robinson, etc have a lot of time in the pocket to go through all of their progressions and pick apart our dbs. Simon was pretty much our only decent pass rusher and that's not really his game. And we ran him into the ground because of no depth. Im hoping this influx of d line talent will aid im our pass rush abilities

Maybe some years it was because the opposing offense did not get that many offensive plays due to three and outs??? I don't know where to get stats on the number of plays run by the opponent.

Our best year from as far back as I can find the numbers was actually 2007. We did have 10(!!!!!) sacks against Wisconsin though.

2011: 23, 1.77 spg
2010: 22, 1.69 spg
2009: 31, 2.38 spg
2008: 27, 2.08 spg
2007: 42, 3.23 spg
2006: 21, 1.62 spg
2005: 29, 2.42 spg
2004: 25, 2.08 spg
2003: 39, 2.79 spg

Looks pretty cyclical to me. I think you would have seen a bigger upswing last year without the injuries to the front 7, but that's football. Hopefully we make up for it in 2012.

The defensive line started John Simon, Johnathan Hankins, Garrett Goebel and Adam Bellamy on Wednesday, with Chase Farris, Joel Hale, Michael Bennett and Steve Miller as the second team.

Simon is playing as the Leo rush end for the moment, as he did last year, but that's not his best position. The Buckeyes need someone to emerge there. Senior Nathan Williams is out for the spring while still coming back from his knee surgery, and incoming five-star recruit Noah Spence, who arrives in June, should jump right into that competition in August.

Bennett, Hankins, Carter, and Simon on 3rd or 4th and short. Tell me who's running on that line.

Probably just an overreaction to a spring game, but seeing Carter's size and strength for the first time was impressive. All he has is a bull rush, but if he can be a situational DL this year that would be a big boost for the D.

I agree. He looked good today. I'm excited to see how the line will shape up as the season gets closer.

Not that Urban is above motivation tactics, but he is a pretty critical, reserved guy when it comes to praise until you truly earn it.

Most of the guys he singled out for praise when asked who stood out were guys he found wholly unimpressive in the spring.

Top 3 DL's I've seen are 02, 03, 09. This line looks as deep as 09 and with a near healthy Williams maybe the best starting 4. My expectations are sky high, especially when even a forgotten guy like Hale is receiving praise from Meyer.
