2012 Defensive Line Discussion

I wasn't aware Florida's 06' line was that good....?
Well it wasn't Chris Leak's aerial assault that got them to the desert

DE Jarvis Moss was drafted 17th overall that following spring, Derrick Harvey (the helmet-less banshee) 5th overall a few years later. Of course both were colossal busts in the NFL, but they were quite special in college.

I still remember that line being quite undersized overall. Last thing to mind was Pittman averaging what...6ypc almost?

If this current line is anything on par with the 09' unit I'll be extremely pleased.

In part because they pinned their ears back every snap (and they were smart to do so, given JT's inexplicable hiatus from running the ball).

They were 285 & 290 at DT. Harvey & Moss were 250-260.

Meyer's 08 line was smaller but equally ferocious.

Defensive Lines

9. Ohio State

Expect a huge difference. The line wasn?t awful last season, but it wasn?t the dominant force that Ohio State?s front four usually is. With so much talent and so much experience, consider it a shocker if the coaching staff doesn?t crank up this group into the best line in the Big Ten. Assuming Nathan Williams is back at some point after suffering a knee problem, all of a sudden the line is loaded with great depth and several options to go along with four returning starters. This is a big, big group that will know what it?s doing.

Urban Meyer is in a rush to find some pass pressure: Ohio State Skull Session
Doug Lesmerises, The Plain Dealer
September 08, 2012

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The one thing about Ohio State football that seemed to be in shape entering the season was one of the areas Urban Meyer was complaining about the most Saturday.

"Getting pressure on the quarterback," the coach said in the fifth sentence of his postgame news conference after the Buckeyes' 31-16 win over Central Florida.

With All-American candidates John Simon and Johnathan Hankins on the defensive line, the Buckeyes were promising more sacks and more pressure. Through two games, they have three sacks, by freshmen Noah Spence and Adolphus Washington last week and by sophomore Steve Miller on Saturday.

Sacks are overrated. But consistent pressure on the quarterback is not.

With the available talent, Meyer expects more, even with regulars Michael Bennett and Nathan Williams out with injury. Without them, true freshman Tommy Schutt got the first start of his career.

With all due respect to all of the Fan Bois on this message board it looks like all of the younger players on this D-line will be much more productive this year than the older ones through the first 2 games. Yes i said games, not some 1/2 ass blog hacks rankings that have u all a flutter. I have seen very few flashes of explosiveness from the upperclassmen on the line and I hope its because we are sort of hiding the playbook a bit for the B1G season. They havent been a weak spot for sure but I thought the bar was a lot higher for them. The future seems bright for the young kids...

Fickell needs to get over the 4 defensive tackle look he (and Heacock) loves. It is an effective way to stop the run, but it is not what we need to take that next step. Move Hankins and Simon inside (with Goebel, Hale and Schutt) [they will be more effective and disruptive inside vs guards] and get Miller, Washington, Spence, Williams (if healthy) and Bennett (when he gets back) at DE. Need more speed and pressure on a consistent basis. They may not be completely ready for the run game, but they will learn. Start getting to the QB and the defense will create more turnovers and more opportunities for the offense.

Also need to let those who have earned PT in practice to play in the game (e.g., O. Johnson) -- they earned it, reward them.

The pass rush lineup mostly was Spence-Adolphus-Hankins-Simon, hardly 4 DTs. When Williams and Bennett get back there will be more options.

How are we not creating turnovers? We've had 6 in 2 games, to want more than that is just plain ridiculous.

We could get more pressure and Meyer wants it, that QB was not comfortable yesterday though and the 3 picks show that.

The defensive breakdowns and assignment football are more important. 60 yards on their 1 TD drive because of poor angles by a few of our DBs and we didn't play either of their TDs well plus the breakdown on 3rd and long. There is growth to be had but it was hardly a bad game by the DL or defense and a lot better than last year.

Damn. How are you not coaching at OSU with all of your ideas? Surely we have to get you in touch with the coaching staff so they can learn. lol

I don't don't think its as much that the 4 man rush isn't working as it is that every team we face knows about how talented our starting front 4 are. They double up Simon and know how to prepare for them, so they do. There isn't as much press about he backups. The Bucks showed their strngth with -1 yards rush total against Miami and UCF had a talented back in his own right that was shut down. We have just got to keep the faith with our guys.

Fortunately for the Buckeyes, I will not be making my appearance on the sidelines this week as the new defensive coordinator. However, I expect that this issue and the selection of personnel will be addressed soon because Urban Meyer has questioned the defenses' ability to pressure the QB. While not original with me, a number of Buckeye fans have questioned the use of 3-4 defensive tackles on most plays (this was a big problem last year).

You take away the 1 big play(typically don't agree with doing this)which was caused by 2 DBs making poor plays and UCF had 55 yards on 22 attempts. This is after -1 yards vs Miami OH.

Not sure how that is getting "ran over". Nobody says there isn't room for improvement but the people in the whole I'm not sure if Fickell can do this job or our defense is in big trouble after 2 games makes me hate our fan base as it's absolutely ridiculous at this point.

Most of the same players as last year look a whole lot better in a lot of areas, get a little more pressure and fix the safety breakdowns and this has the makings of a great defense. Not sure why that can't or won't happen.

Like I said in Urban's thread, at the end of the day its players needing to make plays.

You can run a 3 man front, blitz, run a 4 man front, stunt, whatever. If you guys aren't busting through the lines they way they should be it doesn't matter what scheme you deploy, they are just getting stuffed. They need to figure out what is keeping Simon and his boys from busting through. It may be fatigue, double-teams, or a number of issues but it comes down to a man on man situation in which we are on the losing end of half the time the last game.
