2010 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Gonna throw my usually just observationist hat into the ring. We've got ten. We're talking about a loaded class next year. I really can't see more than 16 or 17 total players for this class.

Given:
Bryant
Hagan

Pretty sure:
Hicks
Williams

Good Chance
Brown

Even
Joyner

Slightly less than even
Henderson

If we get all those guys that's 17. I don't see us taking more than that. If not Henderson, you would think that the Buckeyes would find a lineman somewhere. It's hard leaving off Hagerup, too. I'm just not sure how all those guys fit into the class. You would have to be looking at early entries for Gibson, Heyward, or Chekwa or some transfers.
I would be mildly surprised for anyone else, especially Anderson. Just not sure there really is room for Howard. The other main OL don't seem to be interested.

I posted this in Shayne Hale's thread, almost exactly 2 years ago tonight.

http://www.buckeyeplanet.com/forum/...lb-shayne-hale-pitt-signee-21.html#post892102

It seemed to go over well, and I believe it still applies. The names of the kids have changed, but I don't think the idea has.

When you look back into the 2007 recruiting forum at the Official/Unofficial Visits list for the Class of 2007 for the Michigan game on November 18th, you will find that there were actually 7 Official Visits and 48 (listed) Unofficial visits. Of these Unofficial Visits, 21 were in the class of 2007, 25 were in the class of 2008, and 2 for the class of 2009. I realize it's all there for the viewing, but I'm bored, I'm terrible at linking things, and some of you guys are lazy :wink2::

Official Visits:
Deonte Thompson, Florida
Joseph Barksdale, Twice the University!
Anthony Davis, Rutgers
Brian Rolle
Major Wright, Florida
James Wilson, Florida
Clyde Yandell, Georgia Tech

That is 1 out of 7 at The Game on their Official Visits that landed in Columbus. #1 vs. #2. Like RB07 said, brains had been washed and minds made up, and there was a free trip to be had. Why not go?

11 more players who ended up in the class were there on their Unofficial Visits.

Unofficial Visits:
Evan Blankenship
Nate Oliver
Brandon Saine
Donnie Evege
Devon Torrence
Dane Sanzenbacher
Taurian Washington
Boom Herron
Eugene Clifford
Cameron Heyward
Jer'Male Hines

So far that is 12 out of our 15 signees. The other 3:
James Scott - Official Visit - 9/23 vs. Penn State
Solomon Thomas - Official Visit - 1/13 on my sister's birthday :tongue2:
Rocco Pentello - Official Visit - 12/2

As for the class of 2008, we have 10 commits to this point, and the visitors to last years 'The Game' are as follows:

Unofficial Visits (Of course):
Mike Adams
Mike Brewster
Devoe Torrence
Andrew Sweat
Jake Stoneburner
Nathan Williams
Nic DiLillo

7 out of 10, not too shabby, also (hopefully) not done yet....

Cordale Scott
Terrelle Pryor

What does this all mean?? That's certainly open to interpretation, but as RB07 has said, the impact is quite possibly felt moreso a year before you make your decision, than it is a couple of months before you sign.

I think we pick up these guys:
Christian Bryant
Chad Hagan
Seantrel Henderson
Jordan Hicks
Corey Brown
Ben Koyack
Lamarcus Joyner (50 50)
Two guys not on the scene yet.

I know this is your own personal list, but I don't think we're getting Henderson, we have a better chance with Matt James. And how don't u have Tyrone Williams? We're a big favorite of his

From what people have been saying here, that ship seems to have sailed.

I think we can land Henderson and I REALLY hope we do. Taking one OL this year is just unacceptable IMO. We've had so many issues lately with the OL that just taking one a year can't be done. Henderson would make this recruiting class for me....as well as Hicks and Joyner :).

ESPN has recruiting class rankings up, and has tOSU's class at 9.

College Football Class Rankings 2010 - ESPN
Not bad considering we have the fewest commits(11) of anybody in the top 10. USC has the next fewest at 12 commits and are ranked 8th, nobody else in the top 10 has fewer than 15 commits. Quality over quantity is a good thing, especially when it's a year we can't have much quantity.

OSU counting on USC game to boost recruitment

Wednesday, August 19, 2009

Posted by Bill Kurelic

There will be many outstanding prospects making official visits to Big Ten schools during the football season, but typically not many of those visits come during the first or second game of the season.

However, that is not the case this season.

The Buckeyes will play a huge prime-time contest against USC in Week 2, so coach Jim Tressel and his staff hope to take advantage of the weekend on the recruiting front.

A number of the top prospects the Buckeyes hope to land will be in Columbus to see what is expected to be one of the premier games of the college football season, including Under Armour All-Americans DB Josh Shaw (Palmdale, Calif.), DB Lamarcus Joyner (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas), RB Corey Brown (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and OL Chaz Green (Tampa, Fla./Catholic), as well as the No. 4 prospect on the ESPNU 150, OT Seantrel Henderson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) and P Will Hagerup (Whitefish Bay, Wis.).

How many, if any, of those prospects the Buckeyes land will go a long way towards determining whether Tressel's 2010 recruiting class is a good one or great one.

Kevin Weidl: What are the most pressing needs Big Ten teams need to fill on the recruiting trail? - ESPN

Ohio State

Defensive end
Ohio State has young talent waiting in the wings and did well to sign Melvin Fellows (Garfield Heights, Ohio) to its '09 class, but he is among a group of young, unproven prospects. With two seniors and a junior manning three of the top four spots on the depth chart, the need to infuse youth and competition is imperative. As always, the Buckeyes seem to be attracting some talent at the position, with verbal commitments from 2010 prospects Darryl Baldwin (Solon, Ohio) and David Durham (Charlotte, Texas/Charlotte Christian).

Safety
Landing Jamie Wood (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) in the 2009 class was critical -- considering Ohio State will lose both Anderson Russell and Kurt Coleman after this season. Still, the Buckeyes' job is not complete, because the backups are a senior and junior.

Offensive guard
Ohio State netted two big signings in Corey Linsley (Youngstown, Ohio/Boardman) and Sam Longo (Bellbrook, Ohio) this past recruiting cycle. Still, the Buckeyes should continue to add depth and talent here this year. Why? The depth chart is stacked with juniors, and subpar offensive-line play has hindered the Buckeyes the past two seasons.

ESPN hits the nail on the head once again...:roll1:

Wow! do they even research this stuff?
According to the depth chart for DE on ESPN affiliate:

Depth Chart

The two deep at DE includes:
#90 Thadeus Gibson; Jr. #43 Nathan Williams; Soph.
#87 Cameron Heyward; Jr. #9 Rob Rose; Jr.

I imagine one of the DEs they were referring to was Lawrence Wilson...and Rose is also a senior I believe. Regardless, OSU is in fine shape at DE with sophmores like Nathan Williams, Solomon Thomas and Keith Wells (not to mention '09 and '10 recruits Melvin Fellows, Jonathan Newsome, David Durham and JT Moore) waiting in the wings.
