OSU checks in at #10...

College Football Class Rankings 2010 - ESPN

The Buckeyes are adding some offensive weapons in this class, highlighted by four-star RB Roderick Smith (Fort Wayne/Harding). He will provide a bruising dimension in the backfield. He resembles former Buckeye great Beanie Wells on film and is tall, has great bulk and is still lean enough through the waist and lower body to remain fluid with some wiggle. He joins a pair of Under Armour All-American WRs in James Louis (Delray Beach, Fla./Atlantic Community) and Corey Brown (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara). Both have explosive speed, quickness and acceleration. Ohio State also added some playmakers on defense, including a pair of four-star DEs in Darryl Baldwin (Solon, Ohio/Solon) and David Durham (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Christian). Baldwin, 6-5, 255 pounds, has a great physical build to go with good tools. Durham, 6-2, 225 pounds, is a talented and versatile player who can play a number of positions, but will likely wind up at end.

When you think of Ohio State football recruiting, you think of the Buckeyes cleaning up on the in-state talent. After all, Ohio is a top five talent-producing state nationally and OSU is the destination of choice for most of the elite prospects in the state. That being said, the national expansion of Buckeyes recruiting has never been more evident. Among the top 50 prospects in the country, Ohio State is in the running for four of them: linebacker Jordan Hicks (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West), offensive lineman Seantrel Henderson (Saint Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall), cornerback Lamarcus Joyner and cornerback Joshua Shaw (Palmdale, Calif./Palmdale). Of the four, only Hicks is from Ohio.

With the offer to Cullen Christian, does this say that the staff knows something we don't about another prospect? I don't know as much as most of you guys but from what I've read Christian was more a Plan B guy in case Joyner or Shaw didn't work out. I'm just curious if the staff got some info on somebody because there can be no way they can take all of them.

I was thinking about this yesterday, even before the Christian offer, and I feel the staff knows of a couple of transfers that we don't know about. We have a solid shot at Henderson, James, Hicks/Luc (one of the two), Bryant, Anderson, Christian, Joyner, Joshua Shaw. That's eight. According to Mili's chart, we have 4 schollies left. Add a couple of early entries, we have 2 more. I think Joyner, Anderson (yes, I know he's from Glenville, but just my gut, no inside information whatsoever) go elsewhere. There's a good chance that Hagan and Lewis decommit. Add on top of that, the transfers, I'll say we're good to go.

Another explanation for the new offer going out could be Hagerup. They may have been saving a spot for him thinking he was a punter that you take no matter what. With Hagerup gone and Ben punting well when he played, the coaches might not see punter as a need position any more. I guess we'll see if thats true if OSU offers the Ohio punter.

Possible, but very unlikely.

The staff has always had at least 3 K/P's on scholarship while here. Not getting another would leave in Basil and Buchanon I believe. That's just not how the staff has ever gone about business. I'd guess they could always take a pref. walk-on, maybe a John Lloyd, but I see them offering him based on the history of the position with this staff.

It's far from being very unlikely. The majority of those K/P's that have been on scholarship here were not offered a scholarship straight out of high school.

Like I said, we'll find out over the next few months how much OSU needs a K/P for next year. I wouldn't count out http://www.buckeyeplanet.com/forum/buckeye-football/603236-walk-k-devin-barclay-official-thread.html or other walkons just yet. ThirdGenBuckeye, if you're around, how has Derek Erwin been doing? Is he representing the NCC well?

Ranking the Buckeye class of 2010

We have had a few verbals since the last time I ranked the Buckeyes recruiting class. It is an impressive one. I don't know if the numbers are going to allow for a top ten class but when it is all said and done I would put the best ten in this class up against anyone.

1 - Rod Smith, RB - It is laughable that he is not the consensus #1 back in the country. That this is not looking like a banner year for backs. Solid but not great. That is what makes me shake my head that he is not #1. Who combines his size, speed, explosiveness, agility and balance better than Smith? About the only knock that is legit is the level of competition on Indiana.

2 - Andrew Norwell, RT - I am very disappointed that he is missing so much time after his injury. Offensive linemen need as many reps coming in as they can get. Because of Pony league weigh restrictions lineman don't get as much work as players at other positions. Norwell dominates the line of scrimmage. He is physical and the nastier it is in the there the better he likes it. Bends his knees, moves his feet and plays to the whistle. We talked about Adams being the best left tackle prospect since Pace when he came out. I would say Norwell is the best right tackle prospect since Korey Stringer.

3 - Corey Brown, Ath - I am not going to list him as a receiver because Jordan Hall is a back here, and Brown is bigger. He reminds me of Percy Harvin. He could be that kind of old time wing back in our offense, catching passes and running the ball too.

Recruiting wars (strategy). Shaw is making a visit to Michigan but is a Buckeye lean. Christian is a Michigan lean but the staff is hedging their bets IMO. Both are top 15 corners. The Christian offer may have contingencies. In the end i think shaw is a better fit in OSU Scheme. Joyner and Shaw would be great but so would Christian. If we also get the two Glenville boys we will be in great shape.

We seem to do well with walk ons. Groom, Thoma, the 82 year old South African former rugby player from last year (name escapes me). I'm sure there is a plan B by the staff.

That's actually not completely true.

When Thoma came on as a walk-on, wasn't Pretorious on schollie by then, as well as Pettrey and Trapasso?

I think we've always had 3 schollie K/P's, at least. Maybe this will be a change, maybe not.
