2010 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

My working theory (0% fact and 100% speculation) is that Hagan may very well be looking to decommit for whatever reason. Since the LB depth for the future is looking spectacular with the current sophs & freshman, and the possibility of Hicks, McVey, & Hagan, assuming Hagan would eventually be a linebacker. If Hagan looks elsewhere for whatever reason, maybe the staff would rather replace that spot with a true DB like Cullen Christian.

I'll be curious to hear more about the Hagan situation since it could just be a guy realizing that he might as well take some visits during the only time he'll every have that opportunity.

That's actually not completely true.

When Thoma came on as a walk-on, wasn't Pretorious on schollie by then, as well as Pettrey and Trapasso?

I think we've always had 3 schollie K/P's, at least. Maybe this will be a change, maybe not.

You started out disagreeing with what I said and then you went on to support my point. Interesting...

I believe this is the same high school as Aram Olson. Anyone know if they're related?

Olson receiving more attention
By Eric Guimaraes

QB David Olson (6-3 210) of Irmo is now hearing from North Carolina, Missouri, Wisconsin, Virginia, Ohio State, FSU, and East Carolina. He says that Missouri, Virginia, and Wisconsin appear to be the schools showing the most interest. "Someone from Wisconsin is coming to see me play in three weeks when we play White Knoll," said Olson. "I'm going to Virginia this weekend for their game." Olson says he has recently completed his highlights video and the responses have been positive. "I've been told they really liked me by some schools," he said. He also says he has been somewhat selective as to which schools he is looking into to. "We did our research and we're looking at schools that have scholarships to offer (for quarterbacks)," he said. "We'll send the video to other schools if they want to see it but we're focusing on certain schools." Olson did not name a favorite. "I'm interested in any school interested in me," said Olson. Olson also is considering an unofficial to Missouri for a game but is unsure when that would be. He is still waiting on his first offer.

Does anyone think Jatron Elliot may get an offer late if we don't get Hicks?
No. They are very different players. We have enough LEO-types in the class already with Moore and Durham. Not sure where we would go if Hicks goes elsewhere... hopefully DT... or maybe squeeze both Hyde and Howard in at RB... possibly take a 3rd OL. We are deep at LB though, so 2 or 3 in this class is perfectly fine. I guess we just gotta pray Jamel Turner makes it; Hagan could grow into a LB as well.

As BGriff said, not because of Hicks...maybe if Turner can't get in though. I think Elliot and Turner are similar players and frankly, I think Elliot is a talent and I would love having him in this class if there is room.

Just Some Recruiting Tidbits

...

Coach Tressel is a good friend of mine, as is the OSU staff, so this is not a knock at the Buckeyes. Two years ago there were 11 players with Ohio high school backgrounds taken in the first six rounds of the NFL draft. One played at OSU. Last year, something like fourteen players were taken. Four from Ohio State. Even if you are not a Buckeye, you will still get noticed.

Maybe he forgot that Ohio State had three guys drafted (two in the first 35) who were from out of state, in addition to the four Ohio guys. As for the teams that had the other 10 players with Ohio high school backgrounds drafted, I wonder if they also had seven players drafted last year...probably not.

Very few teams get their players "noticed" like Ohio State.

I would like to see how that compares with other states. How many players with high school backgrounds were drafted from California, Texas and Florida?

OSU has a great NFL track record. I believe we are 2nd in active players on an NFL roster behind USC. NFL coaches also know they are getting well coached players. OSU like most teams recruits guys that fit their scheme first and foremost. They also look for versatility. Ohio is one of the top 5 states in producing D1 players.

Making a big game even bigger
Recruits love to be there for rivalry games, but is it the best time for them to visit?

Scouts Inc.

Big-game weekends provide an opportunity for colleges to showcase their programs, and they give recruits a game-day experience at a school they are considering. Whether it's the best time for a prospect to use his official visit to that school is certainly up for debate, but there is no question that hosting prospects on a big weekend is a powerful way to sell a program and all that goes into a football Saturday.

Just this year, Under Armour All-American Corey Brown (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) committed to Ohio State after making an official visit for the Buckyeyes' home game with USC on Sept. 12.

Hot Sell: Notre Dame

There will be eight players in the ESPNU 150, including some of the top prospects at their positions like OT Seantrel Henderson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) and CB Lamarcus Joyner (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas), and several Under Armour All-Americans in South Bend this weekend. And those are just the official visits by seniors. That's not counting the unofficial visits and the top underclassmen checking the game out. Given the amount of talent that will be on campus this weekend and the way the Irish are able to close the deal on players that visit for this game, they make the most sense for this category this particular week.

Right now, closing on the 2 top "power" category players should be out top priority, and it sounds like it is.

Seantrel Henderson and Sharrif Floyd could be the best at their positions in the country, and they are the two most pivotal positions, arguably, on the field.

Irmo QB drawing national attention
By Chris Rodgers

QB David Olson (6-3 210) of Irmo is seeing his stock rise with Wisconsin. The Badgers had coaches down to scout his game with White Knoll a few weeks ago and he was proud of his effort, saying ?I think I did really well in that game, I was happy.? The Irmo coaches told Olson?s father that the Badger coaches said he had ?really grown up and gotten bigger? and that ?he?s ready for Division I football.? Olson said the Virginia coaches would be down to scout him earlier this month, but a snafu on the Cavaliers' end forced them to reschedule that for this Friday. His latest interest has come from Wofford, who told him they would be scouting his game this Friday, as well. Olson hasn?t heard from Clemson or USC recently, and says he?ll make final decisions about his visits sometime after his team?s season is over in December.

UPDATE: Olson recieved an offer from Princeton Wednesday night. Olson mentioned that he is also getting quite a bit of interest from Missouri and that Ohio State has requested more of his film.
