The new BCS standings came out today, and it was uneventful.

tOSU moved ahead of Georgia, so nobody complained.

tOSU is the highest ranked 2-loss team, so nobody complained.

Style points are meaningless at this point as far as which bowl tOSU goes to, so nobody complained.

As usual with the BCS, when there's nothing to complain about, nobody says anything.

Okay I'll rant, tOSU is finally above Georgia, but only by the slimmest of margins and only on the strength of the human polls about 650 points in Harris and 800 points in the coaches polls.
The computers are still giving 2 loss Georgia a points percentage that is heavily skewed by some factor that seems unreasonable and illogical.
Georgia leads tOSU in computer point margin 7400 to 6000 :(
Georgia over undefeated Boise State by 7400 to 6200
Georgia over one loss Penn State by 7400 to 6400
Georgia over one loss USC with a percentage margin of 7400 to 7300.

Unbelievable that a 2 loss and struggling Georgia is still ranked by the computer formulas above a one loss Trojan team.

At times we are given glimpses of how the writers and coaches individually rated teams in the polls. Fans have an opportunity to scrutinize, speculate and even rant over possible human bias.

I would like to see some media scrutiny into how these "unbiased" computer formulas are derived. Even though they only count for 1/3 of the total BCS points, the points margin will have a major impact on the Bowl selection process.
If Florida loses to Bama in the SEC CG, Georgia is poised to pass the Gators in the computers and may even jump them in the BCS ranking.

Does anyone believe that one of the BCS bowls would pass on Florida to select Georgia as the 2nd SEC team to get a BCS bowl berth?

I will never understand how the coaches and writers can put Utah at #7. It just boggles my mind. I understand how the computers can do it because they don't have any common sense and I guess that speaks for the coaches and writers also. I know they are undefeated but they are the seventh best team in the country and the same goes with Boise State. :pissed:both of them!

Something significant happened in the BCS standings yesterday, and it's gone mostly unnoticed. The Coaches poll jumped Texas over Oklahoma. That's very important because the 3-way Big 12 South tiebreker goes to the highest ranked team in the BCS.

If Oklahoma beats Texas and Okie State, and Texas beats aTm, TTech will be the lowest-ranked team of the 3, and it's a beauty contest between Oklahoma and Texas to see who plays Mizzou in the CCG, with a win for the Big 12 South team giving them a ticket to Miami.

If Oklahoma beats Texas Tech and loses the bedlam game to Okie State, then TTech goes based on the head-to-head tiebreak over Texas, but it's possible that Texas would be above them in the BCS standings. But if Texas Tech beats Mizzou, a human voting adjustment would probably get a 1-loss Texas Tech into the BCS Title Game.

But if Oklahoma or Texas lose the beauty contest in the Big 12 South standings, and Missouri wins the Big 12 CCG, then a Big 12 South team could go to the BCS Title game without even going to the Big 12 CCG. A 1-loss Texas or Oklahoma would be more deserving that USC, Penn State or Utah.

I'll let Pete Fiutak speak on Utah's behalf.

Utah and Mountain West fans have every beef in the book if the Utes beat BYU next week and, if everything breaks the right way, USC gets into the BCS title game. Remember, you have to go by what has happened on the field.

So explain, exactly, why USC would be more deserving than Utah if 1) the Mountain West finished 6-1 vs. the Pac 10 this year, 2) Utah finished unbeaten, 3) USC finished with one loss, 4) USC lost to Oregon State 27-21 and 5) Utah beat Oregon State 31-28?

I don?t want to hear about how great the USC defense is, or the talent level, or the oddsmakers, or the past, or what we believe; I want one, single, solitary argument as to why USC deserves to be in the national title discussion over an unbeaten Utah. Please.

I'm not saying Utah deserves to be in the title game, but I think a top-8 ranking for them is justifiable. They were very fortunate to beat both Oregon State and TCU, but they did win those games.

As usual, my thoughts on rankings weigh game results very heavily, while you give more consideration to the 'eye test'. :wink2:

You type faster than I can talk. The one argument that I have with that writer is that he is comparing Utah and the rest of the Mountain West to the Pac-10. I think we will all agree that the Pac-10 from top to bottom is not one of the strongest conferences in the country this year.

You are right. I don't give that much consideration to what teams have done on the field because I think if some teams would play 10 times the team that lost the first game would probably win eight out of the next nine. Maybe I am wrong in my thinking but I think I can judge talent pretty well. Maybe not.
