Shafer is likely to have a big positive impact on TSUN's D.

mgoblog has a nice summary of how his Defenses have performed - before and during his tenure at different programs.

Plus it notes that this likely sets aside the 3-3-5 as a base Defense.

Of course, this will put his corners out on an island at times - and it demands a good penetrating Defensive line, qualities which may not be immediately available in his first year in AA.

and the Domers were creaming in their pants about a certain schemtac advantage after CW's initial presser. Lets see what changes on the field, he's got a talent/depth issue to overcome before anything else.

Jax - the difference in this case is that Shafer has been there and made a positive contribution in each of his professional stops on the coaching trail, CW on the other hand was unknown as a head coaching commodity.

yeah, I was more referring to the standard coach speak at an initial press conference thing, you never hear one say "we're gong to sit in a soft zone to prevent the big play" or anything like that. They all are going to attack/get in your face/be physical etc.

Yeah, but if you read the mgoblog assessment, you see that Shafer's defenses have been way up the national list in sacks. Stanford was 111th in sacks before he got there, 11th during his year there. Western was actually #1 overall. (Might speak a bit to the quality of O-lines in the MAC, but still.) The numbers are there to back him up.

One thing to note: blitzing the friggin' daylights out of the other team is a great way to level the playing field when you have a talent deficiency every time you step on the field - which has definitely been the case at his last two stops. This will really be the first place he's coached where most of the time, his talent is better than what lines up across from him. It'll be interesting to see if he blitzes Minnesota or Iowa with the same frequency.

Dude, he said he called him three times and that if those 3 calls weren't good enough, then good riddance. Sorry, but he didn't want Mallett there and it showed...
Taking that second post entirely out of context, one can imagine that statement taking place in an English 317 class discussion.

So....what....he should have called four times?

Taking the single fact: "Rich Rodriguez called Ryan Mallett three times," and extracting from that "Rich Rodriguez forced Ryan Mallett off the team," is the stretch of the century. Mallett wasn't at mando team functions after the bowl game, either, which are not the actions of someone who wants to be back. Mallett left because of RR's offense, plain and simple, and he's said so himself. That's not RR's fault.

One of the things I like about Rich Rod at Michigan is that he's apparently not interested in being a head coach. Good head coaches will let talent dictate their offense and defense. RR is letting his offense dictate the talent.

OL Alex Mitchell has left the team, according to a reliable source of mine.

Probably only to go to Old Country Buffett for the sixteenth time this week...
How ungrateful... his plan was to be the entire right side...all by himself... thus permitting you to have a couple extra RBs or receivers... it was for the benefit of the team... this was validated by his request for jersey number "64 77 79"

Yeah for his jersey numbers he wanted to have his measurements listed, so that seems about right.

After making that OCB joke I really wanna hit up OCB....lol

FWIW, my best friend has contacts / friends in the UM program, and has said since about the third week of the season, Mallet has been extremely homesick. I was told by my friend around that time that he wouldn't be surprised to see Mallet transfer at the end of the season, if not earlier. Just sayin'...DickRod/Master Shredder's offense and attitude may have been the straw that broke the camel's back.
