Father confirms Mallett transfer from UM
Arrington to enter NFL draft

ASSOCIATED PRESS

ANN ARBOR - Ryan Mallett's father said yesterday the quarterback has left the Michigan football program, and wide receiver Adrian Arrington announced that he will be entering the 2008 NFL draft. The Blade reported in its Jan. 4 editions that Mallett would transfer, citing a source close to the team. Mallett had told The Blade on Dec. 26 that he wanted to remain a Wolverine, but apparently changed his mind after that declaration. Rich Rodriguez said on Tuesday that he did not expect to coach Mallett, Arrington or wide receiver Mario Manningham at Michigan. Rodriguez said Arrington and Manningham would skip their senior seasons. "Today is a very emotional day for me," Arrington said in a statement released by the school. "As much as I will miss my teammates, friends and Michigan football family, I have always dreamed about playing in the NFL. "I believe that I am ready to take on this challenge and move on to the next level. Though I will be catching passes in another city starting next fall, I will always be a Michigan man." Mallett might be reunited with his offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. "He's on his way home," Jim Mallett told the AP. "We don't know where he's going to go yet, but we need to do something quick. We're going to visit three, four or five schools."

I remember giving Brett absolute hell about this one when it first came up.

Somethings never get old.

No offense, but, uh.....how the blue fuck do you figure?

Dude, he said he called him three times and that if those 3 calls weren't good enough, then good riddance. Sorry, but he didn't want Mallett there and it showed.

As an Ohio State fan, I'd love to see him give up on TP after 3 calls.

Sounds like something Jabba the Weis would do to his players

So....what....he should have called four times?

Taking the single fact: "Rich Rodriguez called Ryan Mallett three times," and extracting from that "Rich Rodriguez forced Ryan Mallett off the team," is the stretch of the century. Mallett wasn't at mando team functions after the bowl game, either, which are not the actions of someone who wants to be back. Mallett left because of RR's offense, plain and simple, and he's said so himself. That's not RR's fault.

Absolutely correct on why Mallett left.

I also think it is absolutely correct to say that Dick didn't go "out of his way" to get Mallett to stay. I do not mean that as a knock on Dick. Dick didn't recruit Mallett and Mallett isn't the right QB for the system that Dick runs, so why would Dick go all out in any effort to get that type of QB to come back.

If Mallett has aspirations for the NFL, that is playing QB in the NFL, then one of those phone calls from Dick should have conveyed that message as well, that is, transferring to another school would be in Mallett's best long term interests. I mean isn't that what an individual who truly looks after the best interest of kid would do....be up front and honest about how his spread offense doesn't translate well to the NFL for a QB?

Shafer is 'D' man at UM; Ohio native among 9 assistants named by Rodriguez

By ZACH SILKA
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

ANN ARBOR - Growing up in northeast Ohio, Scott Shafer had a family that was divided evenly between Michigan and Ohio State fans. So rather than choose one, he rooted for both.

As the newly named defensive coordinator with the Wolverines, Shafer and his rooting loyalties are a little more clearly defined.

Shafer, one of nine assistant coaches introduced by Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez yesterday at Schembechler Hall, is now assigned the task of stopping the Buckeyes, along with every other one of the Wolverines' opponents next season.

Shafer is likely to have a big positive impact on TSUN's D.

mgoblog has a nice summary of how his Defenses have performed - before and during his tenure at different programs.

Plus it notes that this likely sets aside the 3-3-5 as a base Defense.

Of course, this will put his corners out on an island at times - and it demands a good penetrating Defensive line, qualities which may not be immediately available in his first year in AA.
