2007 Preseason and Regular season Polls

It's going to be much harder to make the climb from the low teens in the poll this year than it was in 2002. Impressive wins against Texas Tech in game 1 and Washington State in game 3 shot us up from #13 to #6 by the time we went into Cincinnati for game 4. This year, we really don't have any marquee games until going to Penn State on Oct. 27, and that's assuming Penn State will be good this season...if they aren't then our only marquee game will be at Michigan.

home vs. Wisconsin on Nov. 3?

if you win out in the big ten things will take care of themselves...

I certainly hope we are closer to #10. Previous posts are correct regarding our "easy" schedule in the beginning. Factor in last years debacle in the NC game and the slightest resemblence of weakness will cost us this season. I would even guess if we don't blast some of those teams completely out of the water early on that we might drop or get jumped by someone else. If we start the season at #15, we pretty much have no chance at being in the NC game even winning out. A lot depends on the other teams' seasons as well so just winning probably won't cut it. We'll have to be dominant the first 5 weeks to have a shot at the whole enchilada.

The way I see it, we have a damn good shot at starting 8-0. If we begin the year ranked around #12, assuming normal upsets, that should get us up near #5 or #6. That's when we will be tested. Wiscy, PSU and scUM will all be big games that will help us if we can win. If we go undefeated, I think we'd have a seat in that BCS title game. The SEC will beat eachother up and the only team I think that looks poised to run the table is USC.

Ultimately, I do think we'll drop 1 or 2 of that trifecta. Time will tell, but if we get it done on the field, I think things will work themselves out.

Overrated USC not deserving of early No. 1 ranking

By Marc Hudgens on June 25, 2007 12:04 AM

Based on their play from last season, it's hard to believe the USC Trojans are deserving of the No. 1 ranking in college football entering the 2007 campaign.
Despite their 11-win season and 32-18 Rose Bowl victory over Michigan, the Trojans looked little more than average for much of 2006.

Cont...

In 2006 Booty looked about as overrated as you can get, and he appeared confused when things were turning against the Trojans. Dwayne Jarrett and Steve Smith made people believe Booty was a lot better last season than he actually was. They carried the team as far as it got. Now that they're gone, this preseason Heisman candidate will most likely be exposed.

This is exactly why there should be preseason polls in magazines for fans to squabble over, but no polls with any significance. Just because the Bucks don't seem like they're going to win it all this year, they start out too low and get screwed over in the end? I agree 100% with anyone who says we should begin the polls after 4-5 weeks of play, when the voters (may) know what the hell they are talking about.

Exactly what I was saying. I believe we can beat anyone in the country but perception is reality. If the sportswriters and jacked up SEC fans are voting, we're dropping due to last years debacle in the desert and just being Big10. The coaches will most likely always have us ranked about right, because they know what they are talking about. The media voting leads to much favoritism at least in appearance. If we show we are barely winning games, much like 2002, we will be hurt in the polls. Thats just the way things go. So if we start out lower than 11-14 we must crush everyone in the first 5 or 6 games to be in position to make the final leap over our tough stretch of schedule. 1 loss definitely won't make it this year for us.
