I thought the losing team in the BCS title game was automatically voted #2 in the final coaches poll, per agreement of the schools/coaches. Am I dreaming this up?

Dreaming... the only stipulation the coaches poll has is the winner of the BCSNCG is voted #1.

In 2008 we should probably should be #1 or #2 depending on what juniors leave.

Sorry, but no way will we be #1 or #2 pre-season, even if the entire team comes back. We've lost the last two title games, and you can imagine the srreaming there would be if we happen to make it back to the title game against next year...there is going to be serious poll backlash, which actually is happening right now. We dropped only one spot (#1 to #2) despite being killed by Florida in the 2006 NC game, yet we play LSU much tougher on essentially their home field this time and drop three spots in the coaches poll and four spots in the AP poll.

The "problem" is that just like the past 2 years the B10 is going to be down and we are going to be a pretty damn good team. We catch USC early in the year breaking in a new QB among other things.

If we take that one, everyone who is bothered by such things needs to thicken the skin because we will be in the mix once again.

Surprisingly, a lot of the national pundits think highly of us next year. Rivals.com had us at #3, Mandel had us at #2, and ESPiN.com's Mark Schlabach, who has written a lot of nasty things about us, had us at #6.
