Chip Minnich and I had the privilege of getting with Big Ten Network analyst and former Buckeye quarterback Stanley Jackson to talk some Buckeye football. We discussed the upcoming Spring Game, NCAA ban on satellite camps, Cardale Jones ripping the NCAA.

We played a tribute for former Buckeye and New Orleans Saint great Will Smith. Tyler Bishop (@tyler123B1) put together a great youtube video honoring the former defensive lineman that was tragically taken away recently. Stanley gave us his thoughts on the tragedy as well.

It was great discussing with Stanley what the Buckeyes key areas to watch are, what its like as a player to get ready for the Spring Game, we also kind of talked about who at this time (which is early) might be a front-runner for the Big Ten.

You can follow Stanley Jackson on twitter @jacksonville8. We want to thank him again for taking the time out and joining us. We also want to thank our listeners.

Dante Stills is set to visit OSU this weekend. The Buckeyes have a chance to get an early lead for the 2018 defensive tackle.

With the spring game right around the corner, Ohio State is continuing to add to their visit list. With a ton of highly touted players already confirmed to be on hand for the spring game, Ohio State can also add 2018 defensive tackle Dante Stills (Fairmont W.Va. / Fairmont) to the list.

Ohio state on Saturday #OSU

— Dante Stills5️⃣5️⃣ (@kinglamar222) April 12, 2016

Stills, a 6-foot-4, 265 pound prospect, holds one offer from West Virginia as it stands right now, but that list is sure to grow with the summer camp circuit on the horizon. There's no doubt that WVU has put themselves in a position to be the early front runner.

Last weekend, Stills was part of the Rivals Camp series when they made the appearance at Hamilton Township High School in Columbus.

Good Weekend in Ohio ⭐‼️ @RivalsCamp pic.twitter.com/1jyscn1izz

— Dante Stills5️⃣5️⃣ (@kinglamar222) April 9, 2016

Stills uses his brute strength and size to disrupt offenses and continuously is able to get into the backfield. However, a good visit this weekend to Columbus, Ohio has the potential to go a long way for a prospect that is sure to be ranked in the top 10 in his position group by this time next year. Stills is currently rated a four-star prospect by 247Sports.

Another recruit looks forward for the Spring Game

According to reports, 2017 defensive tackle Dalyn Wade-Perry (Englewood, N.J. / Pope Joh XXIII) is excited to be in Columbus this weekend for the spring game. Though he's only ranked as a three-star, he holds a total of 25 offers.

— Tom Loy (@TomLoy247) April 13, 2016

The Garden State product has offers from everywhere in the country, but the two schools that seem to be standing out right now are Stanford and Notre Dame, according to 247Sports' Crystal Ball Prediction.

Wade-Perry already holds an offer from Ohio State with coach Larry Johnson taking the lead in his recruitment. The Scarlet and Gray can afford to be picky at the defensive tackle position moving forward with two commitments already in Haskell Garrett and Jerron Cage.

However, the Buckeyes are expected to take a third in this cycle and a good visit this weekend will go a long way in telling if Wade-Perry is a legitimate shot to land in Columbus.

Here we see what the 6-foot-3, 330 pound tackle can do.

The Buckeyes stopped their losing streak at four games thanks to great pitching.

After losing four games in a row on the road, including being swept last weekend by Maryland, the Ohio State baseball team returned to Columbus and to the win column with a 1-0 victory over Morehead State at Bill Davis Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Buckeyes, who are now 20-11-1 on the season and 11-1 at home, got great pitching and one timely hit to secure the win.

Austin Woodby took the ball looking for a better performance than his first start of the season. The redshirt sophomore, who gave up five runs and lasted just two innings in a no-decision against Toledo on March 30th, gave Ohio State just what it needed. Woodby tossed five shutout innings, yielding four hits and a walk while striking out one, improving to 4-1 on the season.

Redshirt sophomore closer Yianni Pavlopoulos, who had a tough weekend against the Terrapins, blowing two saves, got right back on the horse. The right-hander set Morehead down 1-2-3 in the ninth inning for his seventh save of the season.

For the Eagles, lefty Curtis Wilson made his fourth start and showed some grit after rolling his ankle while covering first base on a groundball off the bat of Ronnie Dawson in the first inning. Wilson basically matched Woodby's performance, giving up just one run on six hits in six innings, but ultimately took the loss.

In the bottom of the second, the Buckeyes drew first blood, and it turned out to be the only run of the entire game. Troy Kuhn led off with a sharp single, moved to second on a balk by Wilson, and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jalen Washington. Ryan Leffel then smacked a double down the third base line to bring Kuhn around for a 1-0 lead.

Sophomore Seth Kinker and senior Michael Horejsei combined to throw three scoreless innings and deliver the lead to Pavlopoulos in the ninth. Ohio State pitching combined to allow just six hits and a walk on the day.

The Buckeyes and Eagles will take the field again tomorrow in Columbus. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. ET, and the game will be streamed live on BTN Plus.

The Ohio State University will have three members in the 2016 Summer Olympics being held in Rio de Janeiro. Two members were runner-up’s in this year’s NCAA Championship Tournament – as well as a Buckeye fencing alumni. Junior Eleanor Harvey will be representing Canada and senior Mona Shaito will represent Lebanon, both in women’s foil. The alumnus – Jason Pryor was a 2009 Ohio State graduate. He will represent the USA in the men’s epee.

Harvey and Shaito both secured their places in Rio after succeeding in fearless competition in the Grand Prix held in Havana, Cuba on March 13th of this year. The two Foilists’ qualified as the highest-ranked fencers in their respective zones – PanAm for Harvey and Asian for Shaito. Eleanor Harvey was a major force at the NCAA Tournaments this year – earning Gold and her first NCAA Championship title.

Jason Pryor punched his ticket to Rio by locking down his berth in the Games at Westend Grand Prix in Budapest, Hungary on March 18-20. The epeeist earned five victories in pool competition, going on to defeat Uzbekistan’s Nadirbek Usmanov (15-7) and Japan’s Keisuke Sakamoto (15-7) in preliminary competition. Pryor finished the event as the second-highest ranked competitor for the PanAm zone.

Coach Vladimir Nazlymov of The Ohio State University’s Fencing team was spot on in his detailing of how these kids got where they did: “We are ready for this and we have a chance. It’s hard, but they can do it. All of them have a chance. Ohio State is a collegian program, but it is a real Olympic center. We have everything to be the best. We have one of the best athletic departments and we have better facilities than any other team. We are ready for this.”

The Fencing program at The Ohio State University has been on track for greatness since Coach Vladimir Nazlymov arrival in Columbus fifteen years ago. He has brought notice to the Buckeyes – making them one of the more fearful in competition and most competitive in all of the NCAA. The Buckeyes have won NCAA Championships in 2004, 2008, and 2012. They came in 2nd in this year’s competition.

The Road to Rio is shaping up in other sports as well. We undoubtedly will be seeing a few more Buckeyes heading south. But for now this is Eleanor Harvey, Mona Shaito, and Jason Pryor’s moments. Allow them this beautiful moment in the sun. Best wishes to all.

You three have made Buckeye Nation quite proud.

Will the Buckeyes set a new record for number of first round picks?

There are 31 first round draft picks in the 2016 NFL Draft, and so far, 25 prospects have accepted their invitations to attend the main event in Chicago. With just over two weeks until the first round, the first set of attendees include several big name Buckeyes including: Joey Bosa, Ezekiel Elliott, Darron Lee, Taylor Decker and Eli Apple.

These former Ohio State players have each made headlines following either their NFL Combine performances and/or their pro day workouts. Since then, they've been traveling across the country, participating in one-on-one workouts and meeting with NFL coaches and scouts, in hopes of hearing their name called early on in the draft.

Several teams, including the Dallas Cowboys and Tennessee Titans, even made their way to Columbus to maximize their time and meet with several potential draft picks at once. With so much talent, Urban Meyer -- who will be in attendance for the big event -- is hoping to break the school's current record of five players taken in the first round of the draft, from back in 2006.

These five Buckeyes will head to Chicago with their families -- and teammates -- in hopes of hearing their name called on April 28. There is still time for others to formally accept their invitation, and could add to the number of Buckeyes making their way to a life-changing event.

LGHL Ohio State could set another spring game national attendance record

usa-today-7866491.0.jpg

With a forecast that has it sunny and warm in Columbus, Saturday's spring game could break the national spring game attendance record yet again.

"I'm appealing to our fans to come out and support us, for a lot of reasons. There's nothing like performing in front of 100,000 people. It's supposed to be great weather so I'm hoping we get 100,000 people."

- Urban Meyer via Doug Lesmerises, Cleveland.com

Ohio State's spring game breaking attendance records isn't anything new in Columbus, but the Buckeyes are shooting for over 100,000 to be in attendance for Saturday's spring game. Ohio State set a record in 2009 with 95,722 fans on hand and then broke the record last spring as 99,391 fans piled into the Horseshoe to witness Braxton Miller, Cardale Jones, and J.T. Barrett all participate in the side events - as well as the game itself. Now, head coach Urban Meyer is confident that the Buckeyes can top that, and with the weather forecasts predicting a gorgeous day on Saturday, it's not a lofty goal at all. In fact, Ohio State has already sold 67,400 tickets and that's around 20,000 more tickets than last season at the same time.

It makes sense that Meyer is confident about fans showing up. He's a got a young but talented team in Columbus and with plenty of position battles and new faces appearing on the field, there's going to be plenty of chances for fans to get a glimpse of what the Buckeyes may look like heading into the fall. Any time you include good weather, you're going to get a good turnout regardless and with a handful of story lines to follow, it should be an exciting affair for the fans to enjoy.

"Surprise Big Ten breakout players of the spring: Ohio State WR Austin Mack"

- Josh Moyer and Austin Ward, ESPN

The Big Ten writers at ESPN took a look at some of the new faces in the conference that emerged as potential breakout players following spring practices this year. For Ohio State, freshman wide receiver Austin Mack was a great choice. Both the coaching staff and his teammates have raved about Mack's playmaking ability and with his position being so critical for the Buckeyes to balance their attack this season, it's impressive that a freshman has been able to make waves this early. It's also a position that Ohio State needs to have prepared for the season, with the losses of Michael Thomas, Jalin Marshall, and Braxton Miller to the depth chart.

With playing time up for grabs, Mack has made an impression that will surely see the coaching staff give him some time on the field once the season comes around. While he may or may not push for a starting spot this season, to get valuable time competing for the position will be critical for future seasons and could end up being a top threat for the Buckeyes in the near future. His competition will be stiff too, though, as other receivers such as Noah Brown and James Clark may have the inside track at starting. Mack also is going toe-to-toe with guys like Corey Smith, Johnnie Dixon, Terry McLaurin, Parris Campbell, and K.J. Hill.

"The most versatile player on each top 25 team: 10. Torrance Gibson, Ohio State"

- Mark Schlabach, ESPN

In order of his way-too-early Top 25 for the 2016 season, Mark Schlabach broke down the most versatile player from each of his top 25 teams, and for Ohio State, Schlabach chose wide receiver Torrance Gibson. The quarterback-turned-wide receiver made the transition somewhat early on in the 2015 season and although didn't play (and redshirted) he still enters this season as a redshirt freshman. What makes Gibson intriguing is the potential with his speed and his 6'4 frame. When he was being recruited, he fought against going somewhere where he would only play wide receiver, but the coaching staff must have convinced him that he could have a future at wideout. Now he'll start to get the chance to prove it this season.

On top of his receiving duties, Gibson could also see time at special teams, and could even end up throwing the ball in a Wildcat-type of formation. While that style never came to fruition with Braxton Miller, that also was eventually proven to be because Miller revealed he couldn't ever throw the ball as far as he used to after his second shoulder surgery. Gibson, on the other hand, can still throw the ball and actually has a decent deep ball when he's on his game. It's something to look forward to for fans to see how Urban Meyer and the staff will get Gibson involved this season and in the future.

The Buckeyes received one of the more favorable league draws.

The Big Ten's regular season slate was already unbalanced before Maryland and Rutgers joined the conference prior to the 2014-15 season. After all, it's impossible to play a true round robin league schedule of 18 games with 12 schools. But the inclusion of Maryland and Rutgers meant each Big Ten team would now play five teams twice and eight teams once. That set-up creates a lot of variance.

I crunched the numbers to see how the unbalanced schedule played out for the 2015-16 season. But first, a primer on the giant table to follow.

First column: where the team finished in conference play.

Second column: where the team finished among the 14 Big Ten teams in Ken Pomeroy's (KenPom) efficiency rankings.

Third column: where the team finished among the 351 Division I teams in KenPom's rankings.

Fourth column: where the team finished among the 14 Big Ten teams when averaging out each team's conference slate to determine the strength of a team's Big Ten schedule. (1=hardest schedule, 14=easiest schedule).

The Buckeyes took care of business against their relatively undemanding schedule

As the table indicates, the Buckeyes’ Big Ten schedule was the fifth-easiest in the league; playing Rutgers and Illinois twice will do that. On the other hand, Ohio State did what it was supposed to do, going 7-0 against teams that finished below it in the Big Ten's KenPom standings, and even went 3-0 against KenPom's No. 7 (Michigan) and No. 8 (Northwestern) squads.

On the flip side, Ohio State was 1-8 vs. the top six Big Ten teams in the KenPom rankings.

Indiana and Michigan State were two really good teams that were assisted by easy league schedules

Michigan State and its cumulative opponents’ ranking of 11.16 was by far the lowest in the Big Ten, with Indiana (12.19) coming in second. The Spartans played Rutgers and Penn State twice, and only had to face Indiana and Maryland once, with both contests coming in the friendly confines of the Breslin Center.

As for the Hoosiers, they drew Minnesota, Nebraska, and Illinois twice, and also had the benefit of playing their lone matchups with Maryland and Purdue in Bloomington.

And while it’s appropriate to point out the lucky flaws in both Michigan State and Indiana’s league slates, the fortuity of each program should not cloud the fact that both teams enjoyed very good seasons, which was reflected by their place in the KenPom rankings and their respective accomplishments: Indiana won the regular season Big Ten championship and advanced to the Sweet 16, while Michigan State won a record fifth Big Ten Tournament.

Wisconsin overachieved

The Badgers shook off the surprise mid-December resignation of Bo Ryan and a 1-4 start in Big Ten play to finish 12-6 in the Big Ten and advance to a third consecutive Sweet 16.

Wisconsin's accomplishment is even more impressive when considering its league slate, which was the third-hardest in the Big Ten. That schedule included home and away tilts with Indiana, Michigan State, Maryland, and Purdue -- four of the five teams to finish ahead of the Badgers in the regular season standings. Wisconsin also played its lone game vs. fifth-place Iowa in Iowa City.

Top to bottom, the Big Ten was not as strong as it was in 2014-15

The cumulative KenPom total of the 14 Big Ten teams in 2015-16 was 9.793. In 2014-15 that total was 10.345. Using the final 2015-16 KenPom's rankings, this season's average Big Ten team (.695 efficiency; 2014-15 was .739) was akin to a slightly better version of this season's 14-18 (6-12 Big Ten) Nebraska outfit, which reflects just how much much the awfulness of Minnesota and Rutgers dented the entire conference's reputation and bogged down the Big Ten's overall efficiency.

The conference announced an extension with TD Ameritrade Park to serve as host venue for four additional years.

The Big Ten is going to get very comfortable at the site of the College World Series. Conference commissioner Jim Delany announced this afternoon that the Big Ten baseball tournament will be hosted at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha from 2019 through 2022.

The 2016 and 2018 tournaments are already scheduled to be held in Omaha, meaning TD Ameritrade will be the host venue for seven out of nine years. This year's event will take place May 25-29.

"We are pleased to announce that TD Ameritrade Park will be the home of the Big Ten Baseball Tournament in 2016 and from 2018 through 2022," Delany said. "It's been a terrific venue for us with incredible fan participation and we're excited to be back."

In 2014, the conference tournament in Omaha smashed both overall and single day attendance records. For the week, over 62,000 fans took in the action, with an NCAA record 19,965 in attendance for the championship game between Indiana and Nebraska.

The Hoosiers won that game 8-4, claiming their second consecutive Big Ten tournament title. That team put five players on the all-tournament team, including Most Outstanding Player Kyle Schwarber, who until his recent injury was a budding big league star for the Chicago Cubs.

Last year's tournament was held at Target Field in Minneapolis and won by Michigan, 4-3, over Maryland.

Ohio State has won eight Big Ten tournament titles, with the most recent coming in 2007, and has appeared every year during head coach Greg Beals' tenure.

Jent is a former Buckeye player who coached under Thad Matta from 2011-13.

Thad Matta needed to make a splash when it came to replacing Jeff Boals on Ohio State's coaching staff. Re-hiring former assistant Chris Jent would qualify as such a move.

As evidently broken by former Buckeye Mark Titus (and previously speculated by Scout.com's Brian Snow), Jent appears to be returning to Columbus, where the former Buckeye player served as one of Matta's assistants from 2011-13. Jent, who scored over 1,000 points during his playing days at Ohio State from 1988-92, has been an assistant coach for four different NBA teams and served as LeBron James' personal shooting coach for four years while he was as assistant with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Jent left Ohio State after the 2012-13 season to take an assistant coaching position with the Sacramento Kings under head coach Mike Malone. After Malone was fired in December 2014, interim Kings head coach Ty Corbin chose not to retain Jent. Last August, Jent was named the coach of the Bakersfield Jam, the Phoenix Suns' developmental team.

Ohio State ranked fifth (2011-12) and 11th (2012-13), respectively, in Ken Pomeroy's offensive efficiency metric during Jent's first stint with the Buckeyes. Since then Ohio State has finished 128th, 28th, and 151st in those same rankings, albeit with less talented offensive personnel than it had when Jent was around.

As a player, Jent logged two seasons in the NBA and five seasons in the Continental Basketball Association. He also spent time playing in Australia, Greece, Italy, and Spain. In addition to his time with the Cavaliers and Kings, Jent has been an assistant coach with the Philadelphia 76ers and Orlando Magic. In Orlando, Jent went 5-13 as the team's interim head coach during the final 18 games of the 2004-05 season.

Titus seemed excited about Jent's possible ceiling with the program:

This is the real reason to be excited.

OSU players have no idea what's about to hit them. Jent doesn't mess around. https://t.co/5jYlCEA351

LGHL The Big Ten's satellite camp loss isn't only Jim Delany's fault

The Big Ten came up short on a big NCAA vote, and the Big Ten's commissioner makes an easy target. But the truth is more complicated.

The biggest recruiting story of the last two years finally reached a legislative solution, and on paper, it seems the Big Ten lost. The NCAA Division I Council voted to prohibit schools from holding satellite camps (camp away from their campuses), a practice multiple Big Ten programs, most famously Michigan, had taken to using recently. The Big Ten was the only P5 conference to vote to continue the camps, as an effort publicly led by the SEC and ACC won 10-5.

A 10-5 vote meant that plenty of other conferences joined the SEC and ACC in voting down camps. The Big 12, Pac-12, Mountain West and Sun Belt also voted to end the practice, even though on paper, that doesn't make sense. Mike Leach of Washington State said that most Pac-12 coaches actually supported satellite camps.

The Sun Belt's explanation for voting to end the practice couldn't be more vague. When I asked the Mountain West Conference why it's representative voted against what appeared to be their best interests, I was told, "The Mountain West's vote on NCAA Proposal No. 59 reflected the majority position of our member institutions and of our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee". Again, not a stirring defense.

Non-power conferences used satellite camps at bigger programs as important evaluation tools, and almost certainly got more value from them than bigger programs do, but multiple leagues voted against their own interests. Why?

The most likely explanation appears to be that many of the individuals voting on this legislation didn't really understand the issue or its consequences. They did, however, seem to understand that they really didn't like what Harbaugh and Michigan was doing, and voted against that.

On some level, that's understandable. Michigan wasn't the first big program to run satellite camps (Penn State under James Franklin did this first), but they're the first program to make such a big dang deal of it, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars parading around the entire country, drawing as much attention as possible, and then getting into Twitter spats with other coaches. SEC and ACC coaches might have opposed the entire production primarily out of self interest, but it isn't hard to see other, less-impacted administrators looking at the entire spectacle and deciding "nah, we don't need that."

This entire event essentially became a referendum on Jim Harbaugh. So it isn't a surprise that the Big Ten lost, and now there are ugly, unintended consequences.

A popular person to blame for this legislative failure is Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany. On some level, that's fair, as Delany didn't make nearly as full throated of a defense, especially not in public, of camps. Given that the SEC and ACC were unified, and public in the declarations of their view, maybe that passivity hurt the Big Ten's legislative cause.

But Delany was also in a tough spot. Unlike other conferences, there wasn't the same consensus among Big Ten programs about camps. Iowa's Kirk Ferentz, after all, wanted to ban outside coaches at camps, just like the SEC. Was Delany empowered to go to the mattresses over this without the full support of his membership? Would it have looked like he was favoring Michigan? I get the feeling this wasn't something every Big Ten program was truly willing to go to war over.

While Delany needs to play a role in situations like these, it's also up to Big Ten coaches and administrators to advocate for their own interests. If the rest of the college football world is going to take adverse legislative action to get back at Michigan, then Michigan needs to fight to rectify those misconceptions. That's a job for Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel and other administrators. It's a job for other Big Ten coaches. And it's also a job for Harbaugh.

There's nothing wrong with a major program trying to hold satellite camps, even in "SEC territory", in my view. But Michigan's aggressive use "NCAA loophole exploitation" as a recruiting strategy, especially in such a public and flagrant manner, has legislative consequences if the Big Ten doesn't have the votes or the support to back it up (which it seems that they don't right now). It seems that Michigan, and really, the Big Ten, would benefit if there was somebody who could tell Harbaugh, "look man, can you just be cool for like, five minutes?"

It's unfortunate, because this stupid pissing match not only unquestionably hurts student athletes, it's also completely avoidable. There are plenty of potential compromises that could pass legislative muster that could work for everybody. You could disallow only power conference coaches from attending camps elsewhere. You could allow a limited number of Power 5 camps a year, or during a very specific window, so coaches can still have planned vacations or family time. You could limit the money spent. There are lots of possible ways to make a deal.

There's potential time to fix this, or to advocate for other rule changes that could help the Big Ten. Perhaps Urban Meyer can be the one with the credibility to advocate for them. Maybe it might be Jim Phillips and Pat Fitzgerald at Northwestern. But when the fact of your program is doing this and this, it might hurt your ability to win legislative floor fights.

The funny thing about all of this, of course, is that Michigan doesn't really need the camps. Without the aid of a cross country tour, and with a coach far less able than Harbaugh, the Wolverines signed the No. 4 ranked class in 2013. They signed the No. 6 class in 2012. Given the talent on their staff, and the financial, historical and brand resources at their disposal, Michigan is going to be fine, no matter what kinds of barriers the rest of the sport tries to throw in their way.

But at the end of the day, all of this has created a policy that hurts not just multiple Big Ten institutions, but student-athletes generally. And there's plenty of blame to go around.
