As always, the Buckeyes are looking to plant the flag in Georgia with their latest offer.

Ericson nabs Buckeye offer

Ohio State currently grasps a commitment from one Georgia prospect in the 2018 recruiting class in quarterback Emory Jones, a five-star standout from Heard County High School. On Wednesday, the Buckeyes looked back to the Peach State as they sent out a new offer to '18 offensive guard Warren Ericson of North Gwinnett (GA).

Very excited to receive an offer from Ohio State!! pic.twitter.com/Yw0PwEgNam

— Warren Ericson (@warericson54) March 29, 2017

While his rankings may not be eye-opening, Ericson, a 6-foot-4, 290-pounder has an impressive offer sheet. The three-star prospect held offers from the likes of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame and Tennessee coming into Wednesday,

While Ericson already had about 20 offers to his disposal, it seems like Ohio State is jumping into the mix at a good time. According to his 247Sports profile, Ericson has only saw Clemson, Michigan,= and Notre Dame for visits. One would think with just three schools seen thus far and an offer sheet that impresses like Ericson's, their could be time for the Buckeyes to make a move in this recruitment.

For now, Ericson comes in ranked No. 417 overall in the class. In addition to that, the Duluth, Ga. resident also holds a standing at 23rd at the offensive guard position and is the 39th highest graded player from his state.

Latest on Vincent's visit

Yesterday, Ohio State welcomed '18 defensive tackle Taron Vincent of IMG Academy (FL) to campus for Day One of his two day stop in Columbus.

That means that today, the Buckeyes will once again have the red carpet rolled out in hopes of convincing the nation's very best defensive tackle that Ohio State is the place to be for him.

Obviously, today is a major day for the Buckeyes’ chances with Vincent as the 6-foot-2, 285-pounder is set to make a decision shortly after — with Florida State, the program that took Marvin Wilson for the Buckeyes about two months ago, being the other school hoping to land the five-star prospect.

Woodbey gets open

Speaking of five-star prospects, '18 safety Jaiden Woodbey, an Ohio State pledge from St. John Bosco (CA) was one of a handful to receive an invite to 'The Opening' on Wednesday.

Congrats to DB Jaiden Woodbey (@JaidenWoodbey6) of @boscofootball (CA) on his invite to #TheOpening Finals. pic.twitter.com/y9FGAHlgFy

— The Opening (@TheOpening) March 29, 2017

Woodbey participated in the regional event in California about two weeks ago. Obviously, he impressed and showed enough to get the invite and will now compete with the best of the best at the Finals event.

'The Opening' is held down in Beaverton, Oregon that features over 150 of the nation’s top high school athletes in a four-day competitive setting. According to their website, 'The Opening Finals' is scheduled for late June or early July.

MotS&G Draft A Buckeye: Gareon Conley

imgres-30.jpg

Gareon Conley was the lone starter after Tyvis Powell, Von Bell and Eli Apple left for their NFL dreams two seasons ago. He has started since they left, and he has become a reliable player for the Buckeyes, often shutting down a half of the field with his play. Conley is listed as 6’0″, 196 lbs., and he is projected to be drafted late in the first round. He ran a 4.44 at the combine and displayed his athleticism during drills. He drew a comparison to current Denver Bronco Aqib Talib from NFL Scouts. He has the ability to use his talents at the next level with the blend of size and speed that he possesses. He is durable and he can be used right away by NFL teams. Unlike other Buckeye Defensive Backs, Conley has more than a season of starting experience, and that is the intriguing part when considering the talent that the Buckeyes send out on a yearly basis over the past few years.

MotS&G Recruiting Spotlight: Julius H.F. Buelow

Recruiting Spotlight: Julius H.F. Buelow
Richard Tongohan
via our good friends at Men of the Scarlet and Gray

images-32.jpg

I have something new and exciting for you Motsag fans, an interview with Class of 2019 recruit Julius Buelow from Kapolei High School in Hawaii. Buelow is 6’7″, 314 lbs., and is currently an Offensive Tackle for Kapolei High School, but he is comfortable when placed outside his natural position, whether it is on the offensive or defensive side of the ball.

R.T: First off, how would you describe your unofficial visit to Ohio State? What stood out to you during the visit?

J.B: The visit to Ohio State was awesome. The campus is huge and the football facilities are impressive. The football building was really busy the day we went and I got to meet a lot of the coaches, trainers, and players. The atmosphere stood out to me, there is a lot of energy there and you can tell people are working hard to be the best.

R.T: I know that the 2018 recruiting cycle has just begun, but what schools are currently “high” or “sticking out” to you? And why?

J.B: This is a hard question to answer. I’ve been to a few different schools and they each have different things to offer. So I really need to figure out what I’m looking for as far as what I might want to study, the football program, and maybe even the type of campus, but I’m only a sophomore, so right now I’m trying to learn about different schools, so I know what kind of options I might have.

R.T: What offers do you currently have and what offers are you striving to obtain/that you covet?

J.B: Right now I only have some verbal offers, nothing official yet. Not sure yet, same as last question, just trying to check out as many programs as I can, so I can have a better idea of what I’m looking for.

R.T: When would you consider cutting down the list of offers? Do you have an idea on when you will commit?

J.B: I probably won’t commit until my senior year, 2019, unless I figure out what I want really early, and that school feels the same way about me. But it’s a big decision, so I don’t plan on making it quickly.

R.T: Being from Hawaii, how comfortable are you about moving far from home? Does weather play a factor?

J.B: As long as I have family kind of close by, I have no problem moving away from Hawaii for college. I always wanted to go to the mainland for school. I like the cold so that doesn’t bother me, by cold, I mean 30’s – 50’s. Don’t know yet how I will do if it’s colder than that lol. Just gotta make sure I have the right clothes and that there’s an indoor practice field haha.

R.T: What factors play a key part in your recruitment? Coaches, facilities, playing time, etc?

J.B: Yes, all of those, and one of the biggest factors is going to be if the school is highly rated for the major I’m in, and also if they have a lot of options if I decide I want to change my major. But the O-Line Coach is going to be one of the main factors for me, and the culture of the program. I want to be somewhere that will prepare me for life after football.

R.T: What are your strengths and weaknesses? What are you looking to improve during your junior and senior years in high school?

J.B: Strengths – my size, footwork, and technique. Weakness – lack of experience, didn’t start playing until 8th grade and never had playing time until 9th grade. Looking to improve everything that has to do with me as a player and a person.

Who is going to take the reins at H-back? Campbell is the most likely candidate.

“Now Ohio State needs to find another [Curtis] Samuel.”

- Bill Landis, Northeast Ohio Media Group

Curtis Samuel was arguably Ohio State’s most explosive player on offense during the 2016 season. It frustrated many when they felt he deserved more touches, because he was that fun to watch, and felt like a sure thing when he got the ball in his hands. Now, Ohio State is tasked with finding the next Curtis Samuel. Landis feels that Parris Campbell makes the most sense. He’s also shown to be explosive when he gets the football in his hands as well.

Landis names others as possible options, like K.J. Hill and Eric Glover-Williams. He mentions Demario McCall, but adds that it looks like he will exclusively be at running back this season behind Mike Weber. Hill wouldn’t be a surprise, as he showed flashes just as Parris Campbell has. Hopefully the receiving talent will better aid J.T. Barrett this season, although it wouldn’t be entirely fair to assume that was the problem in 2016.

4. J.T. Barrett, Ohio State

- Steven Lassan, Athlon Sports

Athlon Sports ranked the starting quarterbacks in college football, and Ohio State’s J.T. Barrett came in at No. 4. Ahead of him were Lamar Jackson, Sam Darnold, and Baker Mayfield at 1, 2, and 3 respectively. Barrett has been a Heisman contender since his freshman season in which he came in for Braxton Miller and surprisingly led the Buckeyes through the regular season, before Cardale Jones finished the season off in style with a national championship.

In 2016, Barrett threw for 3,400 yards and 33 touchdowns overall. At times, the offense would look poor in comparison to its 2014 form, as it has struggled at times during the past few seasons. AS Lassan points out, everyone in Columbus is optimistic that new offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson will be able to help Barrett make one last final Heisman push.

“As a result of his All-Pro success, Spielman made for a natural fit at WrestleMania XI in 1995.”

- Ben Axelrod, Land of 10

The former Ohio State linebacker had the opportunity to participate in WrestleMania. In 1995 at WrestleMania XI, he stood in Lawrence Taylor’s corner for the main event, which featured Bam Bam Bigelow. He joined Reggie White, Ken Norton Jr., Carl Banks, Rickey Jackson and Steve McMichael along with Taylor. Spielman took an unfortunate spill during, after mistiming his cue.

“(Tatanka) was standing up on the ring and I ran across the ring and gave him a shot,” Spielman told Axelrod. “The problem is I was supposed to give him a forearm and I jumped for some reason — I guess the excitement overtook me and I went over the top rope.” Luckily for Spielman, he just bruised his knee as opposed to something more serious. “All the guys were great. You could tell it was their big night,” Spielman said.

Ahead of Michigan State and Michigan. It’s true!

The last Ohio State basketball season wasn’t very fun. Neither was the one before that, if we’re being totally honest. Or, okay fine, even the one before that. It’s been a minute since Ohio State basketball was threatening to make the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament, or really, even being all that fun to watch.

But don’t let this recent down stretch distract you from the fact that Ohio State basketball has actually been pretty dang good for years and years. In fact, the AP recently tabulated their Top 100 programs of all time, based on AP Poll appearances. And Ohio State is in some elite company.

The Buckeyes are No. 12 on the list, ahead of programs like Michigan State, Michigan, Georgetown, Maryland, and others. Only Indiana (No. 5) and Illinois (No. 9) rank higher in the Big Ten. Cincinnati is tenth.

In case you were wondering, Kentucky is No. 1, followed by UNC, Duke and UCLA.

The Buckeyes have appeared in over 33% of all AP Polls, and have held the No. 1 ranking 37 different weeks, which is pretty impressive. A whopping 40% of Ohio State’s appearances have come under Thad Matta. The program was great in the 1960s, after all, and saw some success after that, but recent history not withstanding, it’s truly excelled under Matta.

Here’s hoping Ohio State can get back in AP Poll in a hurry. It’s time to take that state title back from Cincinnati.

Buckeyes host Beavis Midweek game (Fire Beals)

Buckeyes win!

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team got back in the win column with a 3-0 victory over Ohio Tuesday night at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. With their first shutout of the season, the Buckeyes improve to 10-14 overall, while the Bobcats drop to 11-12 overall in 2017.

“The biggest story for me today is that we got a victory in which we pitched the ball very well, and we used multiple guys to do it,” head coach Greg Beals said. “It was good to see Woodby give us the quality start in a controlled situation giving him 45 pitches so he would be available for the weekend. The whole pitching staff pitched very efficient for us tonight.”

Austin Woodby pitched four scoreless innings in a controlled start to improve to 2-0 on the year. The OSU bullpen registered five straight shutout innings to lead the Buckeyes to their first shutout win of the season. Right-handed reliever Seth Kinker claimed his third save of the season. At the plate, Dominic Canzone was 3-for-4 at the plate, while Jacob Barnwell drove in two runs and had a run scored.

The Buckeyes are continuing their efforts to keep talent within state lines.

An offer to an in-state LB

The Buckeyes sent out a new offer to 2019 outside linebacker Cade Stover (Mansfield, OH / Lexington) on Tuesday. Stover, who already stands at 6-foot-4, now holds six total offers which includes the likes of Oklahoma and Virginia. Though he does not have any recruiting rankings, Stover is expected to be one of the top prospects in the state of Ohio by the time his senior year rolls around.

Ohio State has offered 2019 DE Cade Stover, from Lexington, Ohio. Heck of a talent.https://t.co/kuIvVuxUhr @cstov8 #OSU #Buckeyes

— Bill Greene (@BillBankGreene) March 28, 2017

With the way he looks right now, a lot of people believe he will continue to grow and we could maybe see him transform into a 4-3 defensive end. Stover is extremely high on Ohio State as he visited Columbus last October and also received a visit from Urban Meyer in January. It’s starting to look more and more like Stover could become a Buckeye sometime before or during his junior season.

Ohio State hosted 2019 athlete Cameron Phillips on Tuesday. Phillips, from Westerville Central High School, checks in at 6-foot and stars on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball for the Warhawks.

Had a great time at OSU today. Thanks to the coaches for showing love. ⭕❗⭕pic.twitter.com/RYiqPhvtXO

— Cameron Phillips (@camcap0202) March 28, 2017

Though he does play both sides of the ball, most colleges are recruiting Phillips to be a wide receiver at the next level. Phillips has not yet been evaluated by most of the major recruiting sites, but he does hold an offer from a Big Ten program in Illinois. The last month has been busy as he’s also been on campus at Michigan State. Right now, it looks like the plan, from Ohio State’s perspective, will be to keep Phillips warm over the next several months. It’s likely that Phillips will have to come to camp over summer and put on a show for the coaching staff. Phillips’ recruitment is just getting started as he’ll be one to watch in Ohio moving forward.
