With five top pass rushers returning to Columbus this season, the line is ready to anchor the defense.

“We have five premier [defensive linemen] in my mind, and I would like to see all five on the field at one time. Coaches like to say ‘How are the checkers?’ Those are five really good checkers right there: Play them all at once.”

-Urban Meyer, via Austin Ward, ESPN

After a significant rebuilding year starting last spring, when a dozen players left for the NFL Draft, the Ohio State Buckeyes would seem to have a comparative embarrassment of riches heading into the 2017 season--especially when it comes to pass rushers. With defensive ends Tyquan Lewis, Sam Hubbard and Jalyn Holmes all choosing to forego the draft in favor of returning to Columbus, the Buckeyes boast five highly-skilled players--including sophomores Nick Bosa and Dre’Mont Jones--at the position. Last season, this group combined for 37.5 tackles for loss. With so many playmakers on the field, the Buckeyes don’t have to rely on a single defensive end to anchor the line. This arrangement in which seemingly all of the linemen on the roster get to see the field is similar to last season, in which Lewis earned Big Ten defensive lineman of the year honors while playing just 45 snaps per game.

While this surplus of players means the ability to keep the position group fresh with reduced reps and increased rotation, there is another added bonus for the Buckeyes. According to defensive line coach Larry Johnson, that group of five could find itself on the field at the same time, creating one of the most formidable pass rushes in the nation.

Especially given the ability of Hubbard, a former defensive back, to drop back into coverage, the guys up front certainly have an edge. And according to Urban Meyer, the defensive end group is “the strength of our team on defense.” Of course, five men on the defensive line means removing a player from an outstanding secondary or linebacking corps. It would be simply one more scheme on a defense which, at the outset, does not appear to have many weaknesses, and one which Meyer would likely not turn to with great frequency.

“The most recent years, players we’re now recruiting, they know who Carlos Hyde is. Everybody in the free world knows who Zeke Elliott is. And all of a sudden they’re watching and Zeke’s gone. Then all of a sudden here’s Mike Weber and he’s playing, he’s doing good things.”

-Ohio State running backs coach Tony Alford, via Patrick Murphy, 247 Sports

Ohio State has quickly become a renowned destination for the nation’s best running backs. With recent successes like Ezekiel Elliott and Carlos Hyde, top recruits see that success at Ohio State translates into a real shot at the NFL. And for young recruits, that perception often does not even encompass the success of the legendary Buckeye running backs like Archie Griffin, Eddie George and Howard Cassady.

Elliott’s rookie season with the Dallas Cowboys, in which he led the NFL in rushing with 1,631 yards on the year, is a testament to the preparation that Ohio State gives recruits on their paths to the pros. While at Ohio State, Elliott recorded 3,961 rushing yards in three years with the Buckeyes, including two seasons as a starter. That yardage total is good for second all-time in program history behind Griffin. His 43 rushing touchdowns and 22, 100-yard rushing games also rank among Ohio State’s best.

Hyde, who Elliott backed up as a freshman, himself had 3,198 yards and 41 touchdowns in his career as a Buckeye before being drafted by San Francisco in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

And that line of success is still going strong. Sophomore running back Mike Weber last season became just the third Buckeye all-time to rush for more than 1,000 yards as a freshman. If his success continues, Weber could find himself alongside Hyde and Elliott in the NFL--something that top recruits readily pick up on in running backs coach Tony Alford’s recruiting pitch. Antonio Williams, the No. 7 back of the 2016 class, and J.T. Dobbins, the second-ranked back in 2017, are both already enrolled at Ohio State.

The 2018 class is similarly successful, with Jaelen Gill, the No. 3 all-purpose back in the nation, and Brian Snead, the No. 4 running back, already committed.

“I just want to get better at everything. There is not one thing that I feel like I’m weak at. I feel like I need to up everything I do and I think I have so far a lot. It’s going well.”

-Ohio State defensive end Nick Bosa, via Eric Seger, Eleven Warriors

To say that expectations at Ohio State were high for defensive end Nick Bosa, brother of two-time All-American defensive end Joey Bosa, would be a severe understatement. Given his significant football pedigree, which extends to his father and uncle, it seemed almost unreasonable to think that the younger Bosa would be able to live up to the hype. And yet, as he is nearing the end of his first full spring in Columbus, defensive line coach Larry Johnson had high praise for the sophomore. “He’s a year ahead for his progression,” Johnson said. “He’s locked in and he’s going to be a good player for us.”

Johnson, who joined the coaching staff in 2014 after more than a decade coaching the line at Penn State, did not have the opportunity to work with the elder Bosa for his entire career in Columbus. With Nick, however, Johnson was able to shape him to the Buckeyes’ defense since his arrival on campus. By the end of Nick’s time at Ohio State, Johnson will have coached him for at least three years, compared to just two for Joey.

Despite the obvious similarities between the brothers, from their stance to their hips, Johnson says that, while Joey is “relentless” and “powerful,” Nick is more of a finesse player, “a little bit more fast, smooth, he can transition through.”

And while Nick did not have as statistically explosive of a freshman season as Joey, who earned a starting role in his first season, Nick has been surrounded by much greater depth at defensive end--his preferred position--during his time in Columbus, enabling the opportunity to learn from others already familiar with the system. He still played in all 14 games for the Buckeyes, racking up 25 tackles, seven tackles for loss and five sacks on the season.

Ohio State basketball has some roster spots open for next year. How will they fill them?

With news that Ohio State big man Dave Bell would leave the program on Friday afternoon, the Buckeyes suddenly find themselves with multiple scholarship slots for next season. With Trevor Thompson also leaving the program, the Buckeyes will have three openings for 2017.

There isn’t necessarily a glaring hole on the roster right now, as the core of what should make up next year’s team, JaQuan Lyle, Kam Williams, Jae’Sean Tate and Keita Bates-Diop, will all return. Andre Wesson, C.J. Jackson, Micah Potter, new big man recruit Kaleb Wesson, and redshirt four-star Derek Funderburk will help fill out the squad. Throw in freshman point guard Braxton Beverly, and that could easily be your rotation. It might be more than your rotation.

But the limitations of that core have been on display for the last two seasons. The Buckeyes have missed the NCAA Tournament both years, and have been a relative non-factor in Big Ten play. If you anticipate big years from the incoming freshman, and major improvements from Potter and Funderburk — one reporter at least thinks that is possible — that could be enough to get the Buckeyes over the hump and get some momentum back into the program, before an influx of strong 2018 Ohio talent can infuse new upside into the program.

Still, with space on the roster, and with next year being a critical year for both Thad Matta and Ohio State basketball generally, some reinforcements would be greatly welcomed.

So where could those come from?

Graduate Transfers

Right now it looks like the Buckeyes have offered two potential graduate transfers.

One option is Pitt’s Cameron Johnson:

Pitt transfer Cam Johnson's offer list:
Florida
Ohio St
Texas
Kentucky
Michigan
Arizona
Iowa St
South Carolina
Baylor
Ole Miss
Marquette
TCU

— Corey Evans (@coreyevans_10) April 7, 2017

Johnson is a unique option because unlike most other graduate transfers, he actually has two years of eligibility remaining. He’s from Moon Township, not far from the PA/OH state line, and offers a skillset badly needed for Ohio State: deep shooting. The 6’8 swingman averaged 11.9 points a game last year, and shot 41.5% from deep, hitting over two a game. Johnson could potentially fill an expanded Marc Loving-type role for the Buckeyes, providing size as well as badly needed floor spacing.

It would be shocking though if Ohio State was able to beat out Arizona and Kentucky for a player they want. The fit would be there, but I wouldn’t get your hopes up too much for Johnson.

Another possible, and more likely option, is James Daniel out of Howard:

Howard grad transfer James Daniel tells me he has cut his list to Michigan, Ohio State, Tennessee, and DePaul. Immediately eligible.

— Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) April 8, 2017

Daniel bring one critical skill: he gets buckets. The guy led the entire country in scoring in 2015-2016, dropping 27 points a game. But injuries to his ankle limited him to only two games last year.

Daniel isn’t a big guy (6’0, 175 pounds), isn’t especially efficient, and will probably find that the Big Ten is a big step up in difficulty. But prolific scoring is prolific scoring, and Ohio State would certainly welcome somebody another proven scorer to their backcourt.

Freshman recruits

A lot of 2017 talent is already spoken for, but the Buckeyes are still looking at at least three more 2017 guards, per Adam Jardy of the Columbus Dispatch. Those include Thomas Allen, Mark Smith, and M.J. Walker. The Buckeyes aren’t favorites in any of those races (they probably have the best shot at Smith), but any of those three would be a major addition. The Buckeyes could get involved in other recruits, perhaps a big man, now that David Bell is leaving, as well as JUCO players.

Bank the scholarships

If Ohio State strikes out on any of these players, they don’t necessarily have to add anybody else, although a third big man or some additional shooting could substantially improve their team next season. 2018 is another year with strong Ohio talent, and the Buckeyes could roll over a scholarship or two to try and make an even bigger splash in another season.

The Buckeyes will be represented once again in Oregon this summer.

A long list of prospects flocked to Cleveland on Sunday to strut their stuff for a chance to be selected to participate in The Opening, a top tier camp help on the grounds of the Nike headquarters in Oregon each year.

When you have dozens of prospects get together, of course a few Ohio State recruits stood out amongst the competition.

Already earning his invite during the summer, Westerville South product and 2018 Ohio State pledge Jaelen Gill reassured his bid for the camp.

Gill didn’t just show he’s bounced back from his fractured fibula, he also tried to track down recruits to join him in the Buckeyes recruiting class.

Two of the prospects Gill had his eye on were also picked to fly out west this summer. Five-star Fairfield (OH) offensive lineman Jackson Carman and four-star defensive end Tyreke Smith of Cleveland Heights will join Jaelen in Oregon.

Carman, who was once thought as a near lock to verbally commit to OSU, now has Clemson out in front for his services. One of the top overall recruits on Ohio State’s board, Urban Meyer and crew will surely have more than enough chances to sway that back in favor of the Buckeyes in the near future.

A high school teammate of soon-to-be Buckeye freshman wide out Jaylen Harris, Tyreke Smith, like Carmen did, has many around the scene believing he’ll end up in the Scarlet and Gray when it’s all said and done.

With no plans to shut down his recruiting process anytime soon, Smith, who holds over 30 scholarship offers from programs around the country, will have a hard choice ahead of him: stay close to home or head out of state to chase his NFL dreams.

After taking next weekend off The Opening’s regional camps will be back at it in Washington, DC on April 23. Will any of Ohio State targets get selected for the camp? We’ll have to wait and see.

Top prospects visit OSU

Just like every weekend this spring, Urban Meyer and the Ohio State football coaching staff had numerous recruits on campus to get more familiar with the Buckeyes as a whole.

Although the Buckeyes didn’t land a commitment, Ohio State did give the recruits on hand a chance to see what it would be like to suit up for the coaching staff.

Hoping the visit helps them land a pledge down the line, below are some of the recruits who were on hand at Ohio State over the weekend:

The Buckeyes earn their first conference win of the year against the traditional lacrosse power.

The ninth-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes men’s lacrosse team earned its first conference win of the season with a gritty, 13-9 victory over the No. 11 Johns Hopkins Blue Jays in Columbus. It was just the second win all-time for Ohio State over the Blue Jays, and helped to redeem the Buckeyes, who headed into the matchup having lost their last two games versus No. 1 Penn State and No. 4 Notre Dame.

Junior attackman Colin Chell opened up scoring with a goal 1:06 into the opening quarter to give the Buckeyes an early edge. The Blue Jays, however, would score the next two to gain their first lead of the game. Ohio State tied things back up on a goal by senior specialist Jake Withers--his first goal of the season. But Johns Hopkins added two more goals to open up their lead late in the first. Senior midfielder Johnny Pearson, however, scored his first goal of the game, assisted by freshman attackman Lukas Buckley, to keep things close, and though the Blue Jays added another goal at the end of the quarter, Ohio State was down just two goals heading into the second quarter.

Ohio State came out in dominant fashion in the second, scoring the three goals of the quarter in quick succession. Sophomore attackman Jack Jasinski started the Buckeyes off, finding the back of the net with 12:10 remaining in the half. Senior attackman Austin Shanks and Pearson then scored within 10 seconds of one another on a man-up opportunity to earn a one-point lead early in the quarter. The Blue Jays, however, held the Buckeyes scoreless for the remainder of the half, adding two goals late in the quarter to take a narrow, 7-6 lead into the break.

The Buckeyes would not go down so easily, though. Senior attackman Eric Fannell scored with 13:08 remaining in the quarter, ending a 13-minute scoring drought and tying things back up. Buckley scored his first goal of the game to give Ohio State the lead, and quickly added his second with four seconds remaining in the quarter to give the Buckeyes a 9-7 advantage heading into the final quarter.

Freshman midfielder Tre Leclaire opened up the quarter with his first goal of the game with 13:21 left in the quarter. Johns Hopkins scored shortly thereafter, though Ohio State had held Johns Hopkins scoreless for nearly 20 minutes of play. Jasinski then completed his hat trick, scoring his second and third goal early in the quarter to put the Buckeyes up four. Though the Blue Jays would add one more score, Jasinski would find the back of the net for a fourth time on the night to give Ohio State their final goal of the game.

Jasinski, who did not start the game, led the Buckeyes with four goals and three assists. Buckley and Pearson added two goals a piece, with eight players scoring for Ohio State in total.

Withers, who is sixth in the nation in faceoff win percentage, continued his hot streak against the Blue Jays, winning 19-of-26 faceoff attempts. He also led the Buckeyes in groundballs with 10 on the night. Ohio State had an overall 28-18 advantage in groundballs.

Senior goalie Tom Carey, who has allowed an average of just 6.77 goals per game on the season (third in the NCAA), had seven saves on 16 shots on goal. Overall, Ohio State outshot Johns Hopkins 37-30.

With the exception of the first quarter, Ohio State boasted a strong defensive performance on the night, including holding the Blue Jays scoreless for the duration of the third quarter. The Buckeyes are one of the top scoring defenses in the nation on the season, allowing just 7.36 goals per game--good for fourth in the NCAA.
