The Buckeye is calling it a career.

Former Ohio State star linebacker James Laurinaitis has announced his retirement from the NFL after eight years in the league:

pic.twitter.com/6kwiNi6UzM

— James Laurinaitis (@JLaurinaitis55) April 11, 2017

After spending the first seven seasons of his career with the St. Louis Rams, the team’s departure for Los Angeles left many of their veteran players looking for roster spots in other cities. In those seven seasons since the team drafted him in 2009, Laurinaitis didn’t miss a single game and set franchise records along the way -- including the team’s record for most tackles.

The move to cut the Buckeye was even further head scratching once you look at his production during his time with the organization. As a Ram, Laurinaitis never had a season with less than 100 total tackles (852 overall), had four seasons with 3.0 sacks or more (16.5 total), and only one season without snagging an interception (10 total).

Unfortunately, the 30 year old had a hard time reclaiming excellence in 2016 after signing with the New Orleans Saints. He only appeared in five games during the regular season, due to being benched and then later being placed on IR. When Laurinaitis was finally healthy enough to return, the team decided to part ways with the linebacker before the end of the season. He went on to workout for several playoff-bound teams, but didn’t ultimately sign with any of them.

LGHL Ohio State wide receivers making progress during spring practice

Ohio State wide receivers making progress during spring practice

usa_today_9515824.0.jpg

The Buckeyes wide receiving core is preparing for a much better season in 2017.

“We came out here with a chip on our shoulder this spring, knowing we had to improve after the past years and not having the successful seasons that we wanted. We knew we had to take a big step, and I think this spring that’s what we’re doing.”

- Parris Campbell via Austin Ward, ESPN

It’s no secret that Ohio State’s passing game was considered sub par last season. Between the inconsistency of quarterback J.T. Barrett and the Buckeyes wide receivers, the deep ball was one of the crucial weak spots in the offense and it showed against Clemson in the College Football Playoff. Now, with Barrett returning for 2017, it’s up to the wide receivers on the team this spring to turn the corner for the upcoming season. The depth at the position is arguably there, with Parris Campbell, K.J. Hill, Johnnie Dixon, Binjimen Victor, Terry McLaurin, Austin Mack and more, there’s reason for optimism if you’re Ohio State.

Still, a lot of these players were on the roster last season and couldn’t produce like many thought they would or should. With that said, Campbell and the rest of the receiving core is doing everything they can this spring to prepare themselves for the season and make sure they’re at the top of their game. In the article above, Campbell mentions the extra steps being taken to progress the receiving game including staying on the field practicing with the quarterbacks on the deep ball. The spring game is right around the corner and could be a great look into how the receivers are improving and if Ohio State fans can expect a stronger unit this fall.

“[Mock Draft] 3. Chicago Bears: CB Gareon Conley, Ohio State. 5. Tennessee Titans (from Los Angeles Rams): CB Marshon Lattimore, Ohio State. 13. Arizona Cardinals: S Malik Hooker, Ohio State.”

- Danny Kelly, The Ringer

Three of Ohio State’s prospects are seemingly sure-fire first round picks in the upcoming NFL draft. Malik Hooker, Marshon Lattimore, and Gareon Conley have all been projected in many mock drafts as being locks in the first round. This latest mock draft from Danny Kelly of The Ringer has Conley being taken with the third overall pick, which is personally the highest I’ve seen him. Lattimore gets taken at fifth to the Titans, while Hooker gets drafted 13th overall to the Cardinals. While that is the lowest I’ve seen Hooker as well, the fit would be excellent for him as a rookie playing alongside outstanding players such as Tyrann Mathieu.

Regardless, it’s a testament to the talent level that resided in Ohio State’s secondary last season that the Buckeyes are essentially about to give three top picks in the NFL draft. Those three players were crucial to Ohio State’s defensive schemes last season and a large reason why they were able to make a run to the College Football Playoff.

“They all want, they all think they're going to, but some kids come in and can't seem to feel the speed of the game at this level, they can't learn the offense as fast, for whatever reason. We're going to have to see where he's at.”

- Zach Smith via Ari Wasserman, Cleveland.com

There’s another name in the Ohio State receiving game that hasn’t been taken much into consideration. Trevon Grimes is still rehabbing from tearing his ACL during his high school days, but the former five-star has the skill to be a key playmaker for the Buckeyes should he get healthy. While it’s not known if he’ll be able to come back and be the same player that he was before, all signs point to Grimes making a speedy recovery and could potentially have a stronger knee to show for it, according to some of his doctors.

With Grimes recently tweeting out that he’s started sprinting on the knee again, it seems like the young wide receiver is well on his way to getting back to 100 percent again. And that could prove huge for Ohio State as the Buckeyes try to make a leap in the passing game. There’s a lot of hope that he can be a dynamic player for Ohio State at wide receiver but to do that, he’ll need to be healthy. Still, wide receivers coach Zach Smith is excited about the potential that Grimes shows.

BOSTON, MA – MARCH 21: Kyle Turris #7 of the Ottawa Senators celebrates with Derick Brassard #19, Mike Hoffman #68, Dion Phaneuf #2 and Chris Wideman #6 after scoring against the Boston Bruins during the third period at TD Garden on March 21, 2017 in Boston, Massachusetts. (Photo by Maddie Meyer/Getty Images)

The next chapter in the ‘Battle of Ontario’ will have to be written another day.

Thanks to a blown 2-0 lead that contributed to their 3-2 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets Sunday night, the Toronto Maple Leafs failed to pick up the single point it needed to clinch the Atlantic Division’s third seed and the accompanying first round playoff matchup versus the Ottawa Senators.

Even if you don’t believe in the negative psychological impacts of playoff misfortunes from 13 to 17 years ago would have on this iteration of the Senators’ roster, it’s impossible to ignore a few realizations.

Even though this year likely represented the best opportunity to beat the Leafs and exorcise their past playoff demons, it’s not only great knowing that the Canadian Tire Centre will not feature a significant mix of Leafs fans, but the worst insecurities of this Senators fan base will not have to be played out on sports radio, television and social media for the next two weeks.

Instead, the Senators will be facing the Boston Bruins and they’re essentially an undesirably desirable team.

First thing’s first, the Bruins are probably a tougher out than the Maple Leafs. Not only will we be forced to endure Jack Edwards, innumerable Dropkick Murphys’ ‘I’m Shipping Up to Boston’ spins, the fist-pumping douchebaggery of Rene Rancourt, but the loathing of David Backes and Brad Marchand is going to be next-level by the end of this series.

It sucks, but holy shit, it also has the potential to be so fucking incredibly awesome at the same time. (As an aside, please don’t hold me to this by the end of the series if it’s a letdown.)

It gets better however, the Senators have actually fared quite well against the Bruins recently.

The Bruins have only won one of their last nine games against the Senators and two of their last 12.

The Senators have not only won each of their four appearances against the Bruins this season, but of the six goals that they allowed in those four games, only one was an even strength goal.

So where did those other Bruins goals occur?

They came with the Bruins on the man advantage with their power play clicked at an outrageous 62.5-percent success rate.

This is a small sample size of games obviously, but via NaturalStatTrick’s data, here’s how the Bruins fared versus the Senators at five-on-five during these four games:

CF% SF% GF% SCF% HDCF% SH% SV% PDO
Senators
48.92 49.70 88.89 46.98 48.94 9.52 98.82 108.35
Bruins 51.08 50.30 11.11 53.02 51.06 1.18 90.48 91.66

In these four games, the Bruins had one more (24) high-danger Corsi attempt than the Senators’ 23, but the Bruins never scored on any of these shots whereas the Senators buried five of them.

It was Boston’s lack of five-on-five production that led to some closely contested contests.

Although the first meeting had a two-goal margin of victory, their following two games were essentially decided by one-goal (Note: the Senators added an empty net goal in their 4-2 victory on March 6th ) and their last tilt was decided by a shootout.

Guy Boucher’s system is tailored towards these tight-scoring games, but the table above helps fuel the argument that the Senators were pretty fortunate in their season series.

If there is any reason for concern, it’s that over the full course of the season, the Bruins actually had some of the possession rates in the entire league per Corsica.Hockey.

Percentage Rk
CF% 54.70 2nd
FF% 55.31 1st
SF% 55.24 1st
xGF% 55.09 1st
GF% 49.13 16th
SCF% 52.33 7th

Despite these metrics, the Bruins’ goal totals weren’t commensurate with the volume of chances they were creating within the offensive end. In fact, their dismal shooting performance eventually culminated with Claude Julien’s termination on February 7, 2017.

Like clockwork, the Bruins’ started burying their chances the moment Julien was gone.

From February 7th on through their final 27 games, the Bruins had a goals for percentage of 56.7.

So if there is any reason for concern, it lies in whether the Bruins can maintain their strong underlying numbers while enjoying a normalization in their goals for rate. If they can, it will make for a tough series.

Comparatively speaking, here are the Senators’ underlying numbers at five-on-five:

Percentage Rk
CF% 48.55 22nd
FF% 48.80 22nd
SF% 50.10 17th
xGF% 49.13 20th
GF% 48.91 20th
SCF% 49.70 19th

The Senators’ season-long metrics don’t measure up to those of the Bruins, however whenever the Bruins faced the Senators during the season, the Bruins didn’t control the possession game relatively as much as they did against the rest of the league.

Fortunately, the Bruins lineup could be without two of their regular defencemen.

Don Sweeney: Brandon Carlo is out for Game 1. Torey Krug is unlikely.

— Fluto Shinzawa (@GlobeFluto) April 10, 2017

Krug probably had his best season as professional since entering the league in 2012 out of Michigan State University.

He finished second on the team in ice-time per game averaging 21:36 while setting a career high in points with 51. Although his -10 rating may draw the ire of antiquated talking heads, his underlying possession numbers were exceptional (58.0 CF%) but Bruins goaltenders sported an .897 save percentage when Krug was on the ice at even strength.

Brandon Carlo will also miss some time. The right-shot defenceman had a decent rookie season in which he tallied six goals and 16 points in 82-games. Like Krug, Carlo ate a lot of minutes. His average of 20:49 of ice-time per game was the third-highest mark on the team.

Neither player is expected back for the beginning of the series, but now that the Bruins have recalled prospect Charlie McAvoy from Providence, maybe there’s something to be gleaned about their long-term outlook through this promotion.

According to the line rushes at this morning’s practice, here are the Bruins pairings:

Chara – McAvoy
Liles – McQuaid
C. Miller – K. Miller

This is the blue line that the Senators need to take advantage of, especially early on when the absence of two of Boston’s top three guys are out of the lineup.

If the Senators can apply pressure on this defenders and force turnovers in the Bruins’ end of the ice, the burden will be on Tuukka Rask to stem the tide. Hopefully sustained pressure will get him off his game because Rask has played really well of late.

In his last six appearances of the season, Rask did not lose in regulation. He put up a 4-0-1 record, a 0.74 goals against average, two shutouts and a .971 save percentage.

The good news is that Craig Anderson has been equally as brilliant of late. Anderson was named as the league’s ‘first star of the week’ as he posted a 3-0-1 record, a 1.44 goals against average and a save percentage of .943 in the final week of the regular season.

On Ottawa’s blue line, the team’s first defensive pairing could be ready to return to the lineup.

Although Erik Karlsson will definitely return from his foot injury for game one, Marc Methot’s status is still questionable because he’s still recovering from his finger injury. If he cannot go, one of Fredrik Claesson or Ben Harpur will take his place.

According to Pierre Dorion, if Methot does play, game one would represent the first time in more than two years that the Senators’ lineup has been entirely healthy.

I suppose there are always going to be mild concerns about continuity and cohesiveness when players come back into the lineup after being out of the lineup for some time, but Ottawa’s health situation gives the coaching staff the depth and flexibility to create an optimized lineup. That Ottawa clinched home-ice advantage in the first round only helps.

Judging by the line rushes at this morning’s skate, Boucher’s relegated a lot of the team’s roster detritus to the press box.

MacArthur-Turris-Ryan
Hoffman-Pageau-Stone
Stalberg-Brassard-Burrows
Pyatt-Smith-Wingels

It’s amazing how much Zack Smith’s game is marginalized thanks to the unexpected return of Clarke MacArthur. As great as it is that Chris Kelly’s been bumped from the lineup, it’s hard to envision Smith being too successful while playing on the fourth line with anchors like Pyatt and Wingels. A lineup where Dzingel draws in and replaces Wingels would give me the tingles, but this is a start.

It will be interesting to see how Bruce Cassidy and Boucher work their matchups, but by spreading his most talented wingers away from his best centres, if Cassidy elects to match up Bergeron against the Pageau line (and he should), Boucher will get his best offensive centres away from Patrice Bergeron where they can hopefully take advantage of Boston’s lesser lines.

If there is any significant concern, it lies in the Senators’ special teams’ play.

Boston (Rk) Ottawa (Rk)
Power Play 21.7 (7th) 17.0 (T-23rd)
Penalty Kill 85.7 (1st) 79.7 (22nd)

With goals being so hard to come by in the playoffs, the performance of these special teams’ units looms large.

Tying into this is the fact that the Senators are one of the most undisciplined teams in the league. Only three teams average more than the Senators’ 10:20 PIM/GP. Even subtracting for major penalties, the Senators’ 299 minor penalties were still the league’s eighth-highest amount.

Right ahead of the Senators were the Boston Bruins who took 303 minor penalties. Hopefully this is where Alexandre Burrows’ reputation as a pest can benefit the Senators. If he can draw his share of penalties and keep a Zdeno Chara or a shitbird like Brad Marchand off the ice, all the better.

If the Senators get the Bruins into penalty trouble, they have to make them pay. Their opportunity to get into the second round of the playoffs hinge on it.

Prediction: Senators in six games.

Cool?

The Ohio State baseball cap is a nearly essential wardrobe item for any Buckeye fan, especially a student.

But if you’re not feeling the more traditional ‘Block O’ look, or just want something different, well, you’re in luck.

Ohio State will be giving away these ‘Dabbing Brutus’ baseball caps on April 28, at the Ohio State-Nebraska baseball game:

Coming soon to @OhioState_BASE, dabbing Brutus dad hats!

I fully recognize that as LGHL’s resident #dad, I am not an authority on current pop culture trends. And I’m not using Dad Hat in the headline here as a pejorative. I own a few hats like this myself!

But, doesn’t it seem like the dab is a teensy bit ... dated?

Maybe you disagree. Maybe you think a dabbing Brutus is just the amount of ironic-cool your look requires. But even if you think the hat is a little goofy, you should go check out the Ohio State-Nebraska series if you’re near campus. The team could use your support.

LGHL Was a new drill partly responsible for Ohio State’s lower sack rate in 2016?

Maybe it’s smart to not always go for the hit.

Just last week I wrote about Ohio State’s unusually low adjusted sack rate in 2016. The Buckeye defense was just 78th in adjusted sack rate despite ranking first overall in stuff rate and power success rate. Former blue-chip players littered the defensive line, so the issue was likely not with the talent on the roster.

However, Bruce Feldman recently posted an article on a drill that Greg Schiano implemented last year (after picking it up from Bill Belichick) that Urban Meyer reportedly hated at first. The drill, called Match the Hand, involves pass rushers raising the hand opposite of the quarterback’s throwing arm just before the quarterback releases the ball.

The idea is that it helps disrupt the path of the ball just slightly. According to Schiano,

“Sometimes you tap it, and sometimes the quarterback changes his angle. It’s one of those deals where, like, if you change the compass on a boat one degree. If it goes a mile, it doesn’t really change it that much but if it goes 50 miles, you’re gonna be off course. Same thing with a pass. If you can change it at the point of departure, it can be [two-feet different], and those how you make interceptions.”

But the key point as it relates to sacks and the pass rush is this quote by Sam Hubbard in Bruce’s article:

“We do it every day. That’s all I think about when I’m running to a quarterback and he’s rolling out. You don’t go for the hit — that’s what I used to do. You just match the hand. It works every time. I’ve talked to all the quarterbacks and they just say they hate it so much. After doing all these drills, it’s just instinct.”

Hubbard was seen as the heir to Joey Bosa last season. Both possess lightening quick first-steps and have the pass rush moves to

It’s entirely possible that the poorer adjusted sack rate in Schiano’s first year as defensive coordinator was due in part to pass rushers not always going for the hit -- but trying to match the hand instead.

In 2016, Ohio State was 4th in the country with 21 interceptions, but they only had 28 sacks (54th). In 2015, they only had 12 total interceptions (56th), but 38 sacks (9th). 2014 was a great year for defensive havoc, ranking 7th in sacks (45) and 4th in interceptions (25).

The ratio of interceptions to sacks in a given year are interesting. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that the best interception: sack ratio was also the best defense of the Urban Meyer era. While the 2015 defense had the lowest interception to sack ratio in the last five years, that defense was also fourth overall in the country in adjusted sack rate.

The real key is that a defense needs to either be good at getting sacks or getting turnovers. But Schiano and Meyer had to decide between emphasizing higher probability sacks (the pre-Schiano strategy of just get to the QB) or raising the admittedly-lower probability of interceptions (via Match the Hand), and decided to go with the latter strategy (to great effect!).

It’s entirely possible that Schiano’s drill explains the lower sack rate last season -- but the drill could have also been in place because the line nevertheless lacked a single pure pass rusher. Maybe Nick Bosa, Jonathon Cooper, and/or Chase Young still change things this coming season.

Either way, I’d argue that an elite defense needs to be forcing at least 1.5 interceptions per game or getting an average of nearly 3 sacks a game. Be on the lookout for whether edge rushers go for the sack or try to match the hand in their pass rush in 2017.

A rising athlete will be committing Saturday, while attending the Ohio State spring game.

This weekend the Ohio State football team will show the country what it will be working with this year during the annual spring game. The game has always been one of the biggest recruiting events the school has to offer and this has only increased since the arrival of head coach Urban Meyer.

This year appears to be no different as a rising recruit announced he will be committing the day of the game. Three-star athlete Jermaine Eskridge (Tampa, FL / Jefferson) set his commitment date via Twitter Monday morning and the timing is more than coincidental.

Eskridge had already confirmed he would be on Ohio State’s campus for the game and now we know he will also be committing that same day, making the Buckeyes the clear favorite to gain his services.

I will be committing on Saturday and shutting down my recruitment and focusing on school!!

— EJ1️⃣ (@Iam_Jermaine4) April 10, 2017

The visit will be his first time on campus, but that doesn’t mean he is not familiar with the coaching staff. So much so, he listed the school in his top seven last month along with Alabama, Oregon, Michigan, Penn State, Florida State and Florida.

While the three-star ranking may appear as lower than what Meyer usually targets, Eskridge’s talent was noticed by almost every school. He was given more than 50 scholarship offers, as Ohio State has been competing with the best of the best in the race for Eskridge’s commitment.

And while nothing is official, given the recent update, the Buckeyes have to love where they stand with Eskridge.

Elite OT enjoys Ohio State visit

The Ohio State football program has been hosting an incredible amount of elite prospects in the past few weeks. This past weekend was no different as the Buckeyes had multiple recruits checking out the campus.

It appears the weekend was a success as one of the country’s top prospects walked away more than impressed.

Four-star offensive tackle William Barnes (Apopka, FL / Apopka) took to Twitter Monday afternoon and not only did he say he had an “awesome time” on his Ohio State visit, he also expressed a desire to return to the campus.

Had an awesome time at The ️hio state university!!! Can't wait to get back up there! #OhioAgainstTheWorld pic.twitter.com/qNMk7pfnwW

➕W ️➕®☄️ (@barneswilliam7) April 10, 2017

Barnes is one of the county’s top offensive line recruits in the 2018 class, ranked as the No. 74 overall prospect in this year’s recruiting class in the 247Sports Composite Rankings and the No. 7 OT.

He currently holds 18 scholarship offers from schools like Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Miami, Michigan, Oregon and Nebraska. With plenty of time left in his recruitment, Florida is seen as the current favorite but Ohio State is hoping to have changed that after this weekend.

While admittedly, it will be difficult to pry Barnes away from ‘The Swamp,’ Urban Meyer is familiar with the state and has made the Buckeyes legitimate contenders for his services.

Ohio State spring game visitor list continues to grow

Like previously mentioned, the Ohio State spring game is this weekend and every year the list of top recruits visiting the game feels like it cannot get better — but then it does.

This year will be no different as some of the country’s top recruits have already announced they will be in attendance for the game, and we learned yesterday that another elite prospect will be in there.

First reported by Jeremy Birmingham of Landof10.com, five-star defensive end Micah Parsons (Harrisburg, PA / Harrisburg) confirmed he will be on Ohio State’s campus this weekend for the game.

5-star DE Micah Parsons tells me that he’ll be in Columbus for Ohio State’s spring football game this Saturday.

Parsons committed to Big Ten foe Penn State in early 2016, but that hasn’t kept him from visiting and talking to other schools. The visit will not be his first time on campus as he was in attendance for the Buckeyes Junior Day camp earlier this year and was in attendance for last year’s game against Michigan.

While he has yet to officially open up his commitment, a third unofficial visit to Ohio State in six months shows there is legitimate interest in the program.

MotS&G Draft A Buckeye: Cameron Johnston

Johnston.jpg

Cameron Johnston took over punting duties for Ohio State and he was quite the weapon. Johnston hails from Australia and he turned out the be a dependable weapon during special teams with his patented directional and rugby punts. He has the ability to shift field position and put opposing teams in a bind, with little to no room. Johnston averaged 46.7 yards per kick in 2016 and he was second in the nation as he averaged 43.9 net yards. He also has wheels. He ran a 4.92 on the 40-yard dash and that could be another weapon, if he is willing to stick his nose out during special teams opportunities. Johnston is destined to go in either day 3 or go undrafted. Maybe he will be the next undrafted special teams ace thta makes it in the big leagues.

MotS&G Draft A Buckeye: Noah Brown

Draft A Buckeye: Noah Brown

Brown-1.jpg

Noah Brown blew up against Oklahoma, showcasing his ability to out-muscle opposing DB’s. He showed the ability to separate and high point the ball over unsuspecting defenders. It was certainly a shock for him to leave, but he has the size and the speed to make it if a team takes a chance on him in this year’s draft. Brown is 6’2″, 222 lbs. and he can be a monster, and has the ability to take over during games. Brown is susceptable to the injury bug and two seasons ago, he broke his leg, which caused him to redshirt that year. Last season, he was the featured peice, but then the gameplans moved away from him as the season progressed. He has some film, but he doesn’t, but he is an intriguing prospect due to his measurables. He is projected to go as early as day 2 of the draft, but he is more likely going to be taken sometime in day 3. He may follow Jailin Marshall and end up being an undrafted free agent, but who knows, the draft tends to be unpredictable.

MotS&G Draft A Buckeye: Pat Elflein

Draft A Buckeye: Pat Elflein

Elflein.jpg

Pat Elflein has been an anchor on the Buckeye Offensive Line for the past few seasons. He has the talent to plug into either Offensive Guard spots and he can also be effective as a Center. At 6’3″, 303 lbs. Elflein, last seasons Rimington winner will be a valuable commodity for a Offensive Line needy team in the NFL. Although a tad bit inconsistent with his strentgh, his effort level and his dedication to his craft are traits that most teams covet. He needs to improve his strength, but his experience as a wrestler would help him when placed in the game. Versatility is the name of the game and Elflein is a proven asset at Guard and at Center. He is projected to go in the 2nd Round.
