MotS&G Spring Game Outlook: Quarterback

Spring Game Outlook: Quarterback
Richard Tongohan
via our good friends at Men of the Scarlet and Gray
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

With the practices for the annual Ohio State spring game underway, after a dreadful end to last season at the hands of eventual National Champion Clemson, we are on the verge of entering another season that is filled with high expectations. Ohio State made it to the CFB Playoffs last season, and as we look ahead, they look to finish on the top of the College Football Mountain once again, but will they will have to rely heavily on the Quarterback position to reach the summit.

Ohio State lacked in the passing department last season, placing as the #81 team in the NCAA in passing offense, as they tallied 2,781 total yards through the air and 26 total touchdowns. They averaged 213 yards per game, 6.80 yards per attempt and 10.91 yards per completion. These are pretty average numbers, and a change needed to be made to fix an anemic and broken passing attack that has been lacking the past few seasons.

New Faces at a different place

images-31.jpg
Enter new Offensive Coordinator and shot caller Kevin Wilson. Wilson was the former Hoosier Head Coach, who was successful with the players that were willing to play football at Indiana. He comes with the clout of being an Offensive Guru, who can rehabilitate struggling offenses. He had coaching stops at North Carolina, Miami, Northwestern, Oklahoma and the previously mentioned Indiana. Oklahoma was his best example of installing a potent and dangerous offense, and with Sam Bradford and Adrian Peterson at his disposal, he played on the strengths of his program. Wilson has shown what he is capable of when he has the athletes in place, and this move was the perfect situation for both Ohio State and Coach Wilson. Ohio State looks to move forward and upgrade until their passing game catches up with the running game. Wilson will be up for the challenge as he looks to start a new chapter in his coaching career.

images-1-17.jpg
Ryan Day is the designated Quarterbacks Coach and he takes over a treasure trove of players, who are all capable of contributing if necessary. He is tasked with molding his room into full-fledged starters and with names such as J.T. Barrett, Joe Burrow, Dwayne Haskins and true freshman Tate Martell, Coach Meyer is not taking any chances with the passing game anymore. Day is a former College Quarterback and he comes fresh off back to back NFL seasons under Chip Kelly in Philidelphia and San Fransisco. Now, he looks to develop the personnel at Ohio State, and with the talent in place, he has to re-establish the passing game by teaching them up. He is capable of transforming these Quarterbacks into more consistent and capable passers. He turned Nick Foles in Philidelphia and Collin Kaepernick in San Fransisco into the players they were during those seasons during his tenure with those teams, and there is no reason to doubt his ability to teach young Quarterbacks to their potential.

The Quarterbacks

imgres-29-300x168.jpg

J.T. Barrett is the incumbent starter and with the worst game of his life behind him, there was almost no choice but to return to rebound from that dreadful performance in last years CFB Playoffs. Barrett has the grit and the determination to push forward to improve individually and to improve the players around him. He will have new coaches on the sidelines and with that, it gives him more motivation that ever. Barrett will need to learn fast and with him moving forward, the Buckeyes have a winner at that position and the experience to will his team to victory. They are in good hands under the watchful eyes of Wilson and Day.

imgres-2-13.jpg
Joe Burrow will go into Spring practice as the backup to J.T. Barrett after Stephen Collier put up the cleats. Out of all the back-ups, he has the most experience because he played sparingly during blowouts last season. Burrow could see game minutes if Barrett goes down with an injury and he is capable of moving the offense because he showed that when he checked in. Another Dual Threat Quarterback waiting for an opportunity to show what he is capable of at Ohio State. He isn’t as fast as Barrett, but he is deadly accurate when throwing the ball. He has the ability to lead and the ability to lead, which is a trait that Barrett displays consistently.

images-2-10.jpg
Dwayne Haskins is another Dual Threat weapon waiting to be unleashed. There has been a ton of hype surrounding him this Spring, and any Buckeye fan would be excited to know that the Buckeyes have another talented player on the roster, that is waiting for an opportunity to shine. Haskins might see the field, but it might be unlikely unless both Barrett and Burrow get bit by the injury bug. Haskins has the skills necessary to thrive in the Ohio State system, all he will need is one moment to display his skills. Haskins has the make of an alpha dog and has taken the steps to work and grind until he gets his shot.

imgres-1-17-300x162.jpg
Tate Martell is a true freshman and he comes from Bishop Gorman High School in Nevada, one of the best programs in the nation. Martell comes with all the hype, just like the Burrow and Haskins, but he has the high school achievements that will make your jaw drop. He is another quarterback that fits the Ohio State mold. Another Dual Threat capable of running and throwing if things align to their liking or if the play breaks down. Martell won’t see the field this season, but as an early enrollee, he will learn from the upperclassmen above him of the depth chart. Barring any injuries, he may see some time, but it unlikely.

MotS&G Tyreke Smith to Visit Buckeyes

College football has become a twelve months a year thing for fans (it always was for coaches). The recruiting season never ends, but is especially noisy after bowl games.

Now it’s spring football time and most programs are back on the field. Anytime a college team is on the field is a time to show the program to recruits.

This weekend Ohio State will host Tyreke Smith, a big time recruit from Cleveland who visited Penn State last weekend (video here).

Smith is a consensus top ten defensive end who undoubtedly is impressed by the NFL success Buckeye linemen have enjoyed. Buckeye line coach Larry Johnson has a reputation for developing talent and in 2016 Joey Bosa burst into a big rookie year.

Defensive line is certainly a position of need. The Buckeyes are likely to lose Sam Hubbard, Tyquan Lewis and Jalyn Homes to the NFL after this year. Joey’s brother Nick could also be gone the following year.

Smith would seem to be a natural Ohio State lean. We will be paying attention.

The Buckeyes came back to force overtime but lost 3-2 to the Bulldogs.

If you told me before the season that Ohio State hockey would make the NCAA Tournament and be ranked in the top 15 for most of the season, I would’ve thought you were off your meds. They shockingly did both of those things, but even with all that goodwill gained, a loss like this still stings.

Ohio State hockey took No. 2 Minnesota Duluth to overtime in the West Regional semifinal of the NCAA Tournament but fell, 3-2. UMD scored two goals in the second period to give themselves a seemingly insurmountable lead before Ohio State tied it up on third period goals within 5:31 of each other from Matt Joyaux and Gordi Myer.

But as the most talented teams tend to do on average, Minnesota Duluth found a way to prevail in overtime despite Ohio State attacking like they rarely have this season and playing to their offensive potential.

The first period was scoreless, but the Buckeyes showed they could play with these guys. They outshot the Bulldogs 9-6 in the first, with Matt Tomkins stopping all the UMD attempts. Ohio State appeared to take the lead on a powerplay goal in the last few minutes of the first period, but it was waved off as the referees determined the puck didn’t fully cross the goal line and the teams went to the locker room tied at zero.

UMD did not like that score as they came out firing in the second and took the lead just 49 seconds into the frame on a goal from Dominic “Not Toretto” Toninato. The Bulldogs appeared to score again just under four minutes later, but the puck was ruled to have not fully crossed the line before the net came off its moorings.

Nick Wolff would score at 13:41 with only his second of the year and make it 2-0 UMD. It slithered its way through traffic in front of Tomkins and found its way in to give the Bulldogs the 2-0 lead that they would maintain heading into the second intermission.

In between the two UMD goals, Tomkins made one of the best saves you’re ever going to see, off the knob of his stick, that OSU would need to ultimately get the game tied up:

That is just RIDICULOUS! pic.twitter.com/GDHI1GDu2N

— NCAA Ice Hockey (@NCAAIceHockey) March 25, 2017

Tomkins didn’t allow another goal during the rest of regulation after allowing Minnesota Duluth’s second and gave Ohio State a chance to tie it up, which they would from some unlikely sources.

At 7:09 of the third period, Dakota Joshua got the puck to Kevin Miller who hit a breaking Matt Joyaux between the faceoff circles. Joyaux buried it and got OSU within one. It was just his third of the season but came at about as important a time as possible.

Another Buckeye would decide to score his first career collegiate goal with his team down one in the last ten minutes of an NCAA Tournament game. The Cleveland product took a feed at the top of the right circle from Tanner Laczynski and put it home to tie the game at 12:40 of the third period.

The Buckeyes dominated that third period, outshooting UMD 13-6 in the frame and carrying play throughout. They didn’t get that third goal to win it even with the momentum, but it’s hard to argue with two goals to tie up a game against the No. 2 team in the country.

In overtime, OSU would continue to carry the play, outshooting the Bulldogs 9-7 and 42-32 overall for the game. But they couldn’t hold off such a talented team forever, as Willie Raskob scored his fourth of the season and UMD’s first since the first period on a one timer at 11:58 of the first overtime to send Minnesota Duluth to the next round and Ohio State home for the season.

Ohio State played about as well an attacking game as they had since the early season. They outshot and carried play against the No. 2 seeded team and got goals from the unlikeliest of sources. Nick Schilkey only had one shot on goal in his final collegiate game. Mason Jobst had five but had no points and was a -2. It’s hard to beat arguably the best team in the country with off nights from your two best players, but Ohio State almost did it.

On many nights, if the game was played exactly as it was tonight, Ohio State could have and would have won. Tonight just wasn’t one of those nights. The Buckeyes played their hearts out even without Josh Healey on the backend due to a suspension, but in their final games, Schilkey, Tomkins and the other seniors went playing as well as they could.

It just wasn’t enough tonight.

The Buckeyes couldn’t slow down an Irish team that was on fire from the three-point line.

For the second consecutive season, the Ohio State women’s basketball team had its season ended in the NCAA tournament’s Sweet 16. The Buckeyes fell to their region’s top seed, Notre Dame, 99-76, on Friday night at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky.

Ohio State’s drought of advancing beyond the Sweet 16 will continue another year. The last time the program went further was in 1993, when the scarlet and gray lost in the tournament championship game to Texas Tech.

The Irish, without All-American Brianna Turner who tore her ACL in the team’s last game, was electric from the three-point line, making 12 from deep in the game. Arike Ogunbowale led the way, scoring a career-high 32 points that included four threes. Six of the seven Notre Dame players who saw action finished in double figures, setting a program record for points in an NCAA tourney game.

The Buckeyes didn’t exactly struggle, shooting over 40 percent from the floor and hitting nine threes in the game, but 12 turnovers and a 42-30 deficit on the glass was too much to overcome. All-American Kelsey Mitchell scored 10 first quarter points, but was limited to just eight the rest of the way, finishing with a team-high 18.

Ohio State’s lone senior, Shayla Cooper narrowly missed a double-double in her final collegiate game, scoring nine points and pulling down 13 rebounds in the losing effort.

With the win, the Irish move on to the Elite Eight, where they will face the winner of tonight’s matchup between second-seeded Stanford and third-seeded Texas on Sunday.

Marina Mabrey and Mitchell got the scoring started in the game’s first minute, each knocking down a shot from three-point range, but both sides were ice cold until the media timeout with four minutes remaining in the opening quarter. Ohio State hit just three of its first 10 shots and turned it over four times, while Notre Dame connected on only three of its first 12 attempts from the floor. At the first stoppage, the Irish led 10-7.

When play resumed, shots started to fall. Erin Boley knocked down a three for Notre Dame, but was answered by consecutive triples from Linnae Harper and Asia Doss. After Stephanie Mavunga scored her first bucket in a month and a half after missing time with a foot injury, Mitchell hit another three and Makayla Waterman made a jumper, to give the Buckeyes a 25-21 lead. A three-pointer from Ogunbowale as the buzzer sounded on the period closed that gap to 25-24, and we had ourselves a game.

Ogunbowale kicked off the second in the exact same fashion, knocking down a three, and Mabrey hit two more of her own on consecutive trips down the floor, as the Irish reclaimed the lead, 33-27, prompting an Ohio State timeout.

The early shooting struggles became a distant memory, with both sides scoring seemingly at will. Boley and Ogunbowale hit another pair from beyond the arc for Notre Dame, while Mitchell and Cooper tried to keep the Buckeyes in contact, combining to score eight points through the first six minutes of the frame. But a pair of free throws by Lindsay Allen gave the Irish their largest lead at 45-35.

A Boley jumper and an old-fashioned three-point play by Ogunbowale continued the onslaught, but a second three in the half by Doss and a layup by Mavunga stopped the bleeding momentarily. By the time the teams headed to the locker room, Notre Dame held a 50-42 advantage.

Mitchell scored 12 to lead Ohio State, while Doss added six and Cooper had four points and 10 rebounds. Ogunbowale put up 17 points to lead all scorers, and also grabbed a team-high five boards, as the Irish hit on eight of 13 three-point attempts.

The Buckeyes went big to start the third quarter, and it led to quick buckets from Alexa Hart and McCoy. Cooper then hit a three and Sierra Calhoun pulled down an offensive rebound and made the putback, cutting the deficit to 55-51 and forcing Notre Dame to call a timeout.

The hot shooting for the Irish from long range continued, though, with Mabrey hitting again and Boley making two in a row. Jackie Young got a basket in the paint, and the lead was once again double digits at 65-53.

Mitchell failed to score in the quarter, and while Hart and McCoy each took advantage of Turner’s absence inside and Harper splashed another three, Ohio State couldn’t cut into the lead. A Young and-one sent Notre Dame to the final period up 80-65.

Each team only hit one bucket in the first two minutes of the fourth, but Calhoun made another three and Ogunbowale scored four points in quick succession, and the Irish continued to roll, up 86-70 with six and a half minutes remaining. Mitchell continued to be a non-factor, taking and missing two shots.

Mitchell finally scored her first points of the half on an and-one, but Ogunbowale answered with yet another make from three-point range, and the rout was on. The Buckeyes would never trail by fewer than 20 the rest of the way.

While the loss is a disappointment, it should in no way detract from how successful this season has been for the program. At 28-7, and with nearly the entire roster set to return next year, Ohio State is positioned to be a factor both in the Big Ten and on the national scene with the Final Four being played in Columbus.

Minnesota got great pitching while Ohio State’s bullpen once again couldn’t keep the team in the game.

The woes for Ohio State’s bullpen continued on Friday evening in the team’s Big Ten opener against Minnesota. In a game in which the Buckeye bats were largely held in check, late runs given up by the relief corps proved to be the difference, as the Gophers prevailed, 5-2.

Lucas Gilbreath was dominant on the bump for Minnesota. The lefty set down the first 10 Ohio State hitters he faced, and yielded just two runs, one earned, on four hits in his 6.2 innings, striking out seven without issuing a walk.

Alex Boxwell hit a home run and scored three times for the Gophers, who improved to 12-8 on the season.

Tyler Hanson and Brian Glowicki finished things off for Minnesota out of the bullpen, combining to toss 2.1 scoreless innings.

Reliever Joe Stoll took the loss, giving up two runs in just 0.1 innings, as the Scarlet and Gray fell to 9-12.

Jake Post registered a no-decision for the Buckeyes despite another solid outing. The right-hander allowed two runs, only one earned, on seven hits in six innings of work, keeping the team within striking distance.

Jalen Washington notched the lone extra-base hit off Gilbreath, a fourth inning triple into the right field corner, and also had an RBI groundout. Brady Cherry had a pair of hits and Noah West had a hit and scored a run on a wild pitch on a night when head coach Greg Beals saw his offense go 1-for-6 in limited opportunities with runners in scoring position.

Minnesota drew first blood, scoring an unearned run off Post in the top of the third. Boxwell reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second, and advanced to third on a passed ball by Ohio State catcher Jacob Barnwell. Toby Hanson then brought him home with a sacrifice fly to right field.

The Gophers tacked on another in the fifth when Boxwell hit a solo shot that cleared the center field fence some 400 feet away.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Buckeyes were finally able to string enough together to tie the game. West singled and stole second, Tre’ Gantt reached on an error, and Barnwell laid down a bunt single to load the bases with one out. Gilbreath then uncorked a wild pitch to plate West and a Washington groundball brought Gantt home to knot the game 2-2.

But Stoll ran into trouble the next half-inning, surrendering the lead while only recording one out. Bowell drew a one-out walk and Hanson singled to put runners at the corners. Matt Stemper then hit a comebacker to Seth Kinker, who had come in to relieve Stoll. The right-hander knocked it down but was unable to make the play cleanly, and Boxwell scored ahead of the tag, the eventual game-winner.

Jordan Smith followed that a single to right, which brought Hanson in for a 4-2 lead.

The Gophers added an insurance run in the ninth, thanks to a triple by Smith and an RBI single by Jordan Kozicky off Curtiss Irving.

Ohio State and Minnesota will finish up their series on Saturday, playing a doubleheader at Bill Davis Stadium in Columbus. First pitch of game one is scheduled for noon, with both streaming live on BTN2Go.

The Buckeyes do it up with Minnesota-Duluth tonight.

“With this being the first NCAA tournament appearance for the players on his roster, and possibly the final game in an OSU jersey for his seven seniors, Rohlik said his biggest message to his team this week has been to appreciate what they have accomplished this season,”

Nick Clarkson on OSU hockey, The Lantern

While the basketball team missed their NCAA Tournament, the OSU hockey team found a way into theirs. For the first time in eight years, the Buckeyes are in the NCAA hockey tournament. On Friday, the Scarlet and Gray travel to Fargo, N.D. to face-off against Minnesota-Duluth in the first round.

For Ohio State, it’s their seventh trip to the NCAA Tournament. In their first trip in 1998, the Buckeyes advanced all the way to the Frozen Four. However, in their five subsequent bids, OSU has lost in the first round — overall, the Bucks carry a 2-6 record in the NCAA Tournament.

The Buckeyes look to snap the postseason losing streak behind, you guessed it, scoring goals. This season, the Bucks are averaging 3.97 goals per game. That scoring output is good for second in the NCAA. On the defensive end, OSU is giving up a little under 3 goals per game (2.89).

Going on the power play is Ohio State’s bread and butter. This season, the Bucks rank No. 1 in power play conversion, coming in at 32.5 percent (49-for-151). Additionally, OSU is averaging four power play opportunities per game. Getting a handful of extra man advantages might be the difference maker against Duluth, the top team in the Buckeyes part of the bracket.

If you want to catch the Buckeyes in action, you can listen at 6:30 p.m. ET on OhioStateBuckeyes.com.

“Funderburk isn't No. 1 on this list because of his expected scoring output. He's here because of his upside,”

— Bill Landis on Derek Funderburk and the way OSU can make a turnaround, cleveland.com

As the NCAA Tournament carries on, the conversation starts on how the Ohio State Buckeyes can get back to the big dance. Cleveland.com’s Bill Landis broke down the five most important Buckeyes that can lead the Scarlet and Gray on a turnaround.

There was a surprise in the list: the No. 1 person on Landis’ list is Derek Funderbunk. Funderbunk redshirted this past season, however, according to Landis, his upside that he brings to the table makes him the most important Buckeye on the quest for a turnaround season

Behind Funderbunk on the list are the usual stars on the squad. Keita Bates-Diop drops in at the No. 2 position -- and Landis says Bates-Diop has the potential to be the best player on the team when healthy. JaQuan Lyle and Kam Williams fill in at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots, respectively.

The No. 5 spot belongs to incoming Buckeye, and Ohio’s Mr. Basketball, Kaleb Wesson. If Trevor Thompson actually goes through with the NBA Draft, then Wesson will be one the new kids on the block expected to make an impact.

Next season’s squad may be a make-or-break one for Thad Matta. This past year, injuries to Bates-Diop and Lyle hampered OSU’s winning ways; combine that with the mass exodus before the season, and the recipe for a slumping season was complete.

If these Buckeyes can make an impact next season, then expect OSU to be back in the mix for an NCAA Tournament bid.

“Cardale Jones, now with Buffalo, was one of several former Buckeyes who watched pro day. He believes both Wilson and Smith can make it,”

— Bill Rabinowitz, The Columbus Dispatch

Basketball is still happening, hockey is still happening, but football is on, as Ross Geller would say, a break.

That break is starting to come to an end, as Ohio State’s Pro Day came and passed, and the hunt for the NFL begins. After the Pro Day, Bill Rabinowitz wrote about how the event allowed Corey Smith and Dontre Wilson to showcase their talents to scouts.

With all the NFL teams in attendance (as well as a handful of coaches), Pro Day was one big skills interview for Smith and Wilson. Doing the best they could at Pro Day was even more important, considering that they didn’t get invited to the NFL combine.

If there was a fan to see Smith and Wilson succeed, Rabinowitz found one in former Buckeye national champion Cardale Jones. Jones, who stepped up as quarterback in the 2014 postseason, talked to Rabinowitz on what he saw in Smith and Wilson.

Jones said it takes a “different kind of athlete” to go through the program that Ohio State has put together. Additionally, Jones went on to say that when healthy, both are talented individuals.

Injuries in the past haven’t hampered Buckeyes in the NFL Draft. Braxton Miller was banged up throughout his career, and got drafted to the Houston Texans. Here’s hoping that Wilson and Smith hear their names being called at the Draft.

Eugene Melnyk Speaks: Sens/Avs in Sweden, calls Crosby “a whiner beyond belief”

With today’s official announcement that the Ottawa Senators will travel to Sweden to take on the Colorado Avalanche for two regular season games (November 10th and 11th) as part of the NHL’s 2017 SAP NHL Global Series, Senators owner Eugene Melnyk joined TSN 1200’s ‘In the Box’ to discuss his club’s participation.

Although this midseason road trip and Melnyk’s thoughts on the NHL’s Olympic participation dominated the early stages of the interview, it was Melnyk’s comments on Sidney Crosby’s slash on Marc Methot that generated a lot of league-wide headlines this afternoon.

To listen to the full interview, which begins at approximately the 4:07 mark, you can use the embedded audio player at the bottom of this post.

As always, my thoughts are in bold.

On his team going over to Sweden in November next season to play the Colorado Avalanche and how this deal came together…

“We did this nine years ago, I think it was, that we went over there and I was part of that entourage. It was a great, great time. We’re trying to expand the outreach of hockey to all parts of the world and Scandinavia, of course, is a big hotbed for hockey and we are probably one of the best to represent hockey in Sweden with our superstars. Our last two captains were Swedish and it just… we started talking about when we were going to do this next game and it’s been almost a decade. Everybody jumped on this and we’re just pleased to be part of it.”

It’s pretty ironic that the league is balking at expanding the outreach of hockey to the Far East, but has no problems sending teams to Sweden, where the game is already an intrinsic part of that country’s sport culture. Considering that each of the participating teams are giving up a home gate, I’m guessing that the payout is making this trip worthwhile enough for these owners to ship their players off to a foreign country during the middle of the season.

On what the decision process was for having the games in the middle of the season versus the beginning of the season…

“I should say hockey operations, Pierre (Dorion) especially, came back to us and the coaches and just felt, including the players, they just felt that going over there early in the season kind of… first of all, they’re not fully ready yet and you’re burning them out before the first game of the season already because of the overseas trip. So the thought was, if we could do it at some point in October or November – and it turned out to be November – it would be a lot better for us. We’re into the season, we take a little break overseas and we’d be gone for a week and then come back. So it was just a question of seasoning, I think, and making sure we that have a good team. These are serious games. They’re a full two-points each or up to three and last time we were prepared, but it was tough on us. We wound up getting three out of four points.”

Hold on a second, the players were burned out when they returned from the team’s last European trip and that was at the beginning of the season when everyone is relatively healthy and energized from the offseason? And now they’re being sent in the middle of the season to play meaningful games and there aren’t any concerns about the impacts that this disruption in scheduling or travel could have on the players? Okay, that makes sense…

On having the NHL work with him with the outdoor games, this trip to Sweden and possibly going to the Olympics…

“Yeah, we have… even this year, we dropped the ball. It shouldn’t have happened, but you know we had a fully-loaded (schedule). I’ve got to actually count it today. I think we had like 20 games in November and that’s just way too much on the players and way too much actually on the fans. There’s only so many games that you want to see and that showed in the attendance. Now, it’s a little bit more spread out and we’re going on our playoff run, our attendance is up. (It’s) fantastic and it’s been sell out after sell out and the main thing is that the players are getting rest between games.”

The Senators had 15 games in November, but from a record standpoint, the team actually fared quite well going 9-5-1.

By comparison, their next busiest month were December and February when the team played in 13 games. The team has played 15 games in a month before however. Just last season, the Senators played 15 games in both December and March, but unlike this past November, the Senators fared poorly during those months.

To Melnyk’s point about fan fatigue, 10 of those 15 games were played at home during that stretch, so it’s probably reasonable to assume that this stacked schedule didn’t really help the team at the box office.

The oversaturated volume of home games early in the season isn’t the only reason why the Senators were affected at the gate. Fan apathy, Melnyk malaise, the federal government’s Phoenix pay system, the RedBlacks’ Grey Cup run and the accompanying competition for entertainment dollars, all contributed to the Senators taking it on the chin at the box office during the early stretches of the season.

On whether he feels that the NHL will allow players to go to the Olympics…

“You know, we had a vote – which was very confidential – and we didn’t even know the full results. But, we put our votes in and it was kind of an ad hoc thing to say, ‘Hey, how does everyone feel (about Olympic participation)?’ My sense is I’m just echoing what everybody else is kind of saying and that is it’s tough, tough, tough to take that kind of risk on sending over your franchise players. Some owners, God bless them, they haven’t been in my shoes. But, I’ve been there and done that and it’s really not pretty when you find out that something happened overseas.”

As I wrote yesterday when Melnyk made an appearance on Toronto’s Fan 590 radio:

It’s weird listening to an owner talk about the possibility of injuries in non-NHL games influencing his thoughts on Olympic participation when this year’s World Cup created a condensed schedule where players have fewer days of rest between games to recuperate.

Of course, Melnyk is the same owner who bragged to Ian Mendes during a fall interview from the Senators’ home opener about being at every World Cup game where he complimented Gary Bettman and told him that the tournament was “one of the greatest things we’ve done.”

I guess so long as it’s an NHL sanctioned event wherein the league and its owners can make money, owners aren’t worried about the impacts of those events. I mean, this is the same owner who has no concerns about the impacts of having his team travel to Sweden in the middle of the 2017-18 season to play two regular season games against the Colorado Avalanche.”

Imagine the Senators’ schedule next season if the league agrees to go to the Olympics. Not only will their best players go there for two weeks, the league will also have to condense the schedule and work around Ottawa’s one-week trip to Sweden, its bye-week and whatever outdoor games the Senators get committed to (ie. Ottawa was rumoured as a prospective opponent should Montreal get their own outdoor game).

And just when you thought Bobby Ryan was over-extended, it’s crazy to think about how condensed Ottawa’s schedule could be next year.

On what the difference is in the NHL’s perspective between a player getting hurt in their World Cup versus a player getting hurt representing his country at the Olympics…

“I think it’s best to ask Gary Bettman about that, but just as an observer, even as a fan, I’d say that ther’s a mutual respect amongst players that you’re not going to slam your superstar because in our game, it’s all NHLers, for starters, and it’s NHL officiating. It’s not in the Olympics, not necessarily, I think that’s part of the negotiations, but the NHL is also an enterprise. The World Cup is an enterprise of the NHL, so everybody participates in that and it’s something to promote the game. It’s hockey on our own turf.”

“Ask Gary Bettman,” is such an amazing answer. In other words, injuries are an acceptable risk provided that the hockey is being played on Bettman’s terms and money can be made from it.

On the risk of an injury being there irrespective of what kind of event it is…

“Yeah, that’s the biggest thing for me and it’s unfair to the fans. To sit there and can you imagine now something happened to any of our top players – top five or six? You just… everybody gets optimistic and everybody has dreams of a Stanley Cup, as do I, but (those dreams) are shattered. This is a repeat performance. We’ve seen this with the Islanders and we’ve seen this in Montreal and many, many other situations where a top player is knocked out and a team tanks. It shouldn’t happen, but it does all the time.”

Injuries to hockey players only happen during the Olympics. They don’t happen anywhere else. They never occur in World Championships, All-Star Games, exhibition games, the World Cup or when players eat pancakes. Injuries are only possible in the Olympics. Dread the Olympics.

On Marc Methot suffering an injury to his finger from a Sidney Crosby slash…

“Yeah, I’m sure this is being taken up with the league this morning. I asked for an update and I haven’t gotten it yet. I’m actually on (the west coast). You do anything that’s almost a certain injury and I think the only way to do it is to wipe the guy off the map for not one or two games, ten (games). How about a season for a few of these guys? Really, he takes my guy, I take your guy and that’s my attitude. The guy that creates the injury should be sitting out. They should watch the games together for the rest of the season. That’s the kind of attitude I have. There’s no room for that and you’ve got to think of it. Marc Methot, that’s who you saw, I see the things behind the scenes of what happens from slashes and they’re ugly. They’re just as ugly as Marc’s, but Marc’s was so visible. It was a terrifying thing to look at those pictures. I don’t even want to think about it, it was that disgusting. So that’s the only way to do it: you hammer these guys and you take away their money because they all understand money. You simply say, ‘You know what? You’re done for ten games and guess what, you guys are not going to get even close to the Stanley Cup if it’s an elite player on the other side.’ There’s no room for it in the NHL.”

The Methot injury was pretty gross, but the result is the consequence of a couple of factors:

  • The league and its referees have fostered a culture wherein these types of slashes happen dozens of times per game are accepted as normal. As others have noted, if the slash is made to Methot’s stick and it breaks or he drops it, it’s a penalty eight times out of ten. If the league gets strict on slashes and starts calling penalties more appropriately, maybe this doesn’t happen.
  • Players sacrifice their own safety by preferring gloves that are lighter and give them more dexterity.

If I’m Eugene Melnyk and I look at the kinds of hand injuries that my players repeatedly suffer, maybe it’s time to look into working with equipment manufacturers to deliver products that can keep my players on the ice.

On the league becoming too lenient with its disciplinary penalties…

“Well again, sometimes we miss these things. I hope this guy is… we all know who he is. The guy is a just whiner beyond belief and you do this kind of stuff. I don’t care who you are in the league. I don’t care if you’re the number one player in the league. You should sit out a long time for this kind of crap. I really do.”

Pot, meet kettle.

I get Melnyk wanting to protect his player in this instance, but I can’t imagine the league will want one of its owners shitting on one of its marketable players as a “whiner beyond belief”.

On expecting to hear a timetable from Guy Boucher on when the Senators can expect Methot back…

“The guy lost the top of his finger! I mean, did you see it? It’s ugly. I wouldn’t want to show that to anybody under the age of 25!”

Great, like this organization needed another reason to keep 20-year old Colin White away from the team.

On looking forward to another matchup with Montreal this Saturday…

“I’m looking forward to it. I think our guys are very, very hungry. They’re not going to mess around at all; not that they did. Montreal is a great rivalry. We’re looking forward to it and that’s why the outdoor game is going to be something, I think, spectacular, especially with this team and the build-up of the rivalry is just getting bigger and bigger. So I’m very, very excited about it and we’re looking forward to the rest of the season. Put your seatbelts on.”

Even if Ottawa wins on Saturday, it’s hard to envision them holding Montreal off. The Canadiens’ schedule is incredibly soft with the Senators representing the only opponent that is currently in a playoff spot.

On what he thinks about the divisional playoff setup…

“I do (like it), but only because (Ottawa’s in the playoffs). I really don’t have an opinion, honest to God. I think we just go with the flow and it’s not something we focus on. We’re trying to constantly, everybody is – the NHL, the owners, the players – everybody is trying to make it a better game. I’ll tell you one thing it does: I don’t know if you remember ten years ago, we all used to go to sleep when things weren’t as close as this and the attendance would drop from 20,000 or 18,000 to (10,000) because if you’re not in the playoffs, people lose interest. So here, many, many teams are (in it) right to the last weekend. We don’t like to be in this position, but remember all those points that we gave up in December – like the one-pointers and stuff – that’s now coming back to haunt us and I knew it would. We’re doing great, don’t kid yourself. We are doing great! Marc’s injury is a setback, but it happens with the game unfortunately and we’ve just got to move forward. I think we have the depth. I think we have the depth.”

Artificial league parity, Melnyk’s a fan.

On whether he can shed any light on the Colin White situation…

“Uh, all I know at this point is that they’re deep in negotiations. So no, I can’t comment. I can tell you, I’ve liked Colin very, very much. He’s part of our future and I hope that everything prevails and he becomes part of our organization in an orderly fashion, we enjoy his company, he enjoys ours and we’re going to do well. He’s a good guy. He’s a good player and him and (Thomas) Chabot, we’re looking at them very, very carefully and there are others within the pipeline that are the future of the Ottawa Senators.”
