The wide receiver has battled through injuries but looks ready to shine.

“Yeah, it's amazing -- I haven't missed a day of practice. It's been a long time since I've done that. It was amazing to be out there every day, bringing energy to the group and all that. It was an amazing feeling. It's always fun to go out there and be able to compete and feel fully healthy. I mean, I haven't been able to catch a passing touchdown since my high school days.”

- Johnnie Dixon via Austin Ward, ESPN

Up to this point, Johnnie Dixon’s career at Ohio State hasn’t quite lived up to expectations. The third-year receiver has had trouble staying on the field with multiple injuries over the past couple of seasons. After arriving in 2014 as a four-star talent, there were hopes that Dixon could be the next big playmaker for the Buckeyes. But problems with his knee made it impossible for him to shine on gamedays and was incredibly inconsistent with his practicing routine. Often times Dixon would practice for two days and be off two days because of the injury. Now, Dixon is healthy and it’s showing on the field.

On Saturday, Dixon hauled in six passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns. He was unquestionably the star of the spring game, and provided fans a glimpse of what he’s capable of when he’s not bothered by injuries. And in coming off a season where the wide receiver talent failed to show up in the key moments, a playmaker like Dixon could change everything for the better of Ohio State’s offense. After talking with the coaching staff about whether it was worth it to keep playing football at Ohio State, it looks like Dixon made the right move and he hasn’t missed a practice all spring.

“However, the bottom line for many NFL teams is that the best ability is availability, and Lattimore’s long history of hamstring issues — including surgery as a freshman, further complications that limited him to seven games as a redshirt freshman, and a reported flare-up at the combine that Lattimore claims was actually his hip flexor — could portend major injury issues at the next level.”

- Danny Kelly, The Ringer

The 2017 NFL draft is almost upon us. In just over a week from now, teams will be drafting the best of the best when it comes to college players, including several members of Ohio State. Danny Kelly of The Ringer took an interesting look at some of the riskier NFL prospects for the upcoming draft. One of the nine players listed was Marshon Lattimore, the former cornerback for the Buckeyes. Kelly’s main point with Lattimore being a risk was his history with injuries. And although Lattimore struggled to stay healthy early on in his Ohio State career, there wasn’t a point last season where Lattimore missed any time.

It also just so happens that last year was his breakout year, and it’s possible the two coincide. Still, Kelly did mention that Lattimore’s issue was with his hamstring which is a pretty commonly known injury to be dangerous for flaring up at times. But with Lattimore playing the entire season for the Buckeyes in 2016, it’s hard to imagine that someone with his potential wouldn’t be aware of it and make any necessary precautions to avoid hurting his hamstring again. To be fair to Kelly, he does state at the start of the paragraph that Lattimore could very well be one of the NFL’s top shutdown corners when it’s all said and done.

“Here's why it matters: It's always important when a guy says he's been working on something, and then you actually get to see it in the spring game. Weber said he wanted to work on the little things that make a great running back, including pass protection, and it appears that's happening.”

- Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

Bill Landis of Cleveland.com had eight takeaways from Ohio State’s spring game to look at and one of those was the improvement made from Mike Weber when it came to pass protection. Back when Ezekiel Elliott was around, he was well known across the country at being one of the best blocking running backs in college football. And Weber has been taking advice from Elliott as the two still keep in touch. It looks like Elliott’s techniques are rubbing off on Weber which is good news for the Buckeyes. When Weber picked up a corner blitz on Saturday, it allowed J.T. Barrett just enough time to find an open receiver.

After last season’s nightmares with quarterback protection it’s not a bad thing to have a good blocker in the backfield capable of protecting his quarterback and providing time for Barrett to look down the field. And Weber has talked frequently about wanting to improve his overall game as a running back, and blocking would be a large chunk of that improvement so far.

The Buckeye already has one Super Bowl ring, but he wants another.

Heading into the fourth and final season of his rookie deal, the Denver Broncos have decided to pick up the fifth-year option on former Buckeye cornerback, Bradley Roby. The move guarantees the cornerback over $8.5 million for the 2018 season, which the team felt was worth it for the young secondary weapon.

Taken in the first round (No. 31 overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft out of Ohio State, Roby signed a 4-year deal worth $6.95 million with the Broncos -- including a $3.37 million signing bonus. He’s earned every penny of that contract in his three seasons with the team and has yet to miss a game. During his time in Denver, the cornerback has recorded 144 total tackles (131 solo), 31 passes defended, five interceptions (two for touchdowns), four forced fumbles (two recovered, one for a touchdown) and 2.0 sacks.

Roby had a breakout year in 2016, recording his first career Pick-6 against the San Diego Chargers, followed by his second career Pick-6 just four weeks later against the Jaguars. He even earned, AFC Defensive Player of the Week in Week 8 of the season.

— Bandwagon Club (@NFLBandwagon) October 30, 2016

His second season in the league would be his most memorable -- so far — finishing the 2015 season as Super Bowl 50 Champions, earning Roby a coveted Championship ring. He had two tackles and defended three passes in the Broncos win over the Panthers.

The Buckeye will now stay in Denver through the 2018 season, and as the starters get older, could eventually become the next generation of veteran cornerback for the Broncos. Roby is still young and has a lot of potential as a versatile player in a loaded backfield.

The Buckeye decided to call it a career after the 2016 season.

Linebacker A.J. Hawk signed a one-day deal with the Green Bay in order to retire from the NFL as a Packer. The Buckeye legend made the most of his 11-year NFL career, claiming a Super Bowl win, Pro Bowl recognition in 2010 and making franchise history with 1,118 tackles.

.@OfficialAJHawk was drafted No. 5 overall in 2006.

Today, he retires with the #Packers.

— Green Bay Packers (@packers) April 18, 2017

After being drafted by the team in 2006, Hawk finished third in NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year voting and was named to the Pro Football Writers Association All-Rookie Team, before going on to be one of the team’s respected leaders. During his nine years in Green Bay (2006-2014), the linebacker only missed two regular season games (in 2011) and amassed over 1,000 total tackles, 20.0 sacks, nine interceptions and four forced fumbles.

“We were fortunate to make A.J. my first pick as head coach in 2006, and he spent the next nine years giving everything he had to the Green Bay community and the Packers,” Head Coach Mike McCarthy said. “His leadership and toughness were instrumental in all of our success, and we thank him for all that he did for the organization and the community.”

After the 2014 season, Hawk was released and signed by the Cincinnati Bengals. He once again competed in all 16 games that season, but in a much more limited role -- only claiming 24 total tackles and 1.0 sacks on the year.

The Buckeye followed his one season with the Bengals with a half-season with the Falcons. He only saw playing time in one game and spent the majority of the season working as an analyst for various outlets.

The Buckeye will be in Carolina for at least one more season.

Carolina Panthers offensive guard and former Buckeye Andrew Norwell headed into the offseason as a restricted free agent. The team placed a second-round tender on the guard, worth $2.746 million for the 2017 season, which Norwell signed Monday according to the team.

Carolina’s offense struggled throughout last season, with a big problem being the lack of a run game. Most of the rush attack was placed on quarterback Cam Newton’s shoulders, leaving the team as a whole far less dynamic than they’d been in previous years. Boosting the line with consistently strong players, like Norwell, will set the team up for a much more well-rounded offense next season.

In his third year out of Ohio State, Norwell lined up for 1,108 snaps in 2016 and also finished the year with the highest performance grade (85.7) — the most and best of any Buckeye free agent -- according to Pro Football Focus. Lining up at left guard, Norwell was the only Panther lineman to finish the season in the same spot he started; Carolina’s offensive line suffered so many injuries there was a continual rotation of players and positions.

The guard went undrafted in 2014, but still signed a 3-year, $1.542 million deal with the Panthers. This past season was the first of Norwell’s career in which he was healthy enough to suit up in all 16 regular season games. His snap counts have increased each season, culminating in a career-high 2016 season.

At only 25, there is still a lot of gas left in Norwell’s tank, and he plans on keeping the momentum and snagging a longterm deal next offseason.

The Buckeyes managed to land in the top lists for two of the country’s top recruits.

Top Georgia DB includes Buckeyes in top 6

Ohio State lost multiple elite DB prospects to the NFL last year and is prepared to lose three more in this year’s draft class. Because of this, the Buckeyes coaching staff will need to bring in more elite secondary recruits again this year. The never-ending work again appears to be paying off, as one of the country’s top DBs wants to focus on the school going forward in his recruitment.

Chris Smith (Atlanta, GA / Hapeville Charter) has seen his recruitment take off as he enters his senior season. He has amassed a reported 30 scholarship offers from some of the top programs in college football, including Ohio State.

The Buckeyes only recently entered the race for Smith’s services however, presenting him with a scholarship offer March 30, following a successful weekend visit to the campus. Apparently, the visit went even better than initially expected, as Smith released his top 6 schools Monday afternoon and the Buckeyes were included.

Top 6‼️#blessed pic.twitter.com/oOUpjCxVk5

— Chris Smith ll (@cpsmithdb) April 17, 2017

Smith, who is listed as a 3-star CB by 247Sports, claims Ohio State is one of the six schools that he feels best fit his future, along with Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Alabama and Michigan. It is hard to argue with his decision as the aforementioned schools are all top programs.

The Buckeyes have been able to pick up commitments from two blue-chip safeties in this year’s class but have yet to wrap up a CB. While there is still plenty of time in Smith’s recruitment, the school has to like where they stand with him.

Top DT has Ohio State in top 8

Again, Ohio State is liking where they sit with one of the country’s best recruits in the 2018 recruiting class. Sticking with the defensive side of the ball, the Buckeyes recently learned that they are one of the final schools defensive tackle Tommy Togiai (Pocatello, ID / Highland) will consider committing to.

Beyond Blessed to announce my top 8!!! pic.twitter.com/LhixaPqQ9B

— Tommy Togiai (@Big_Tom71) April 14, 2017

The four-star DT included Ohio State in his top eight schools, along with USC, Wisconsin, TCU, Washington, Utah, Penn State and Michigan in no particular order.

If Togiai were to choose Ohio State, the Buckeyes would arguably have the best haul at the position of any school in the country. Already earning a commitment from the top DT in the class in Taron Vincent, adding Togiai would be the icing on the cake.

The blue-chip prospect is seen as the No. 14 DT in the class and the No. 150 overall recruit. While he has reportedly viewed Ohio State as one of his top schools for some time now, Togiai has yet to make it to Columbus for a visit. Expect the Buckeyes coaching staff to change this in their efforts to build an elite defensive line.
