A prospect takes a look at what the Buckeyes have to offer.

With spring ball currently back to being in full swing, the Ohio State coaching staff is faced with the challenge of preparing for the 2017 season, along with bringing in one of the top classes in the country yet again.

Britt Makes Visit

2019 offensive tackle Justin Britt (Indianapolis / Warren Central) was in Columbus yesterday and, according to his Twitter, the visit went “amazing.” Britt, who attends Warren Central High School in Indiana, only has one offer as it stands, but he is destined to take a huge leap when the summer camp circuits roll around. His lone offer is from the Indiana Hoosiers.

I had an amazing time at Ohio State today Special thanks to @OsuCoachCoombs for helping us get out there I had a amazing time.#gobuckeyes pic.twitter.com/rM60jyPOKr

— Justin Britt (@brittjus000) March 21, 2017

Though the most popular recruiting sites have not yet evaluated him, it doesn’t mean Britt isn’t a top prospect. He has ideal size at 6-foot-5 and already weighs in at 270 pounds. Including the Ohio State visit, he’s also taken visits to Iowa and Notre Dame in the last few months. Britt is gathering interest, but the recruiting process is still young for him. Ohio State could take a slew of offensive linemen in the 2018 and 2019 classes and if things go well over the next year, Britt could end up earning an offer. It’s likely that he’ll have to find his way back to Columbus and earn it in a camp setting.

Working on the Buckeye State

Though it doesn’t come as earth-shattering news, reports indicate that Ohio State could “have the edge” when it comes to the recruitment of four-star linebacker Dallas Gant. Gant, from Ohio, is the top rated prospect in the state and one of the best linebackers in the country. Penn State, Notre Dame and Michigan have also been tied to Gant’s recruitment as many schools around the nation are vying for his services. Gant expects to visit Ohio State once more sometime in April, a visit that the Buckeyes are hoping could finally lock down the 6-foot-3 prospect. Gant is rated as the 117th best prospect in the country, according to 247Sports.

The Buckeyes brought their bats to Bill Davis Stadium, but questions still loom about the pitching staff.

After a weekend to forget in which it suffered late-inning or walk-off losses in three straight games to Xavier, the Ohio State baseball team got some home cooking against a scuffling Youngstown State team at Bill Davis Stadium in Columbus. It wasn’t the prettiest game, but the Buckeyes pounded out a 12-8 win over the Penguins.

Headed to the ninth inning with a commanding 12-7 lead, it was hard not to think of Ohio State’s late-inning implosions of late. But it was not to be this time, though righty Seth Kinker did yield a solo home run to YSU’s Andrew Kendrick.

Ohio State, which improved to 9-11 on the season ahead of opening Big Ten play this Friday, was an outstanding 8-for-21 (.381) with runners in scoring position in this one and had four players with multi-hit games.

The top three hitters in the Buckeye lineup - Tre’ Gantt, Jacob Barnwell, and Jalen Washington - combined to go 6-for-11, scoring three runs, and driving in seven. Washington’s three RBIs give him a team-leading 19 for the season thus far.

Freshman Noah West, who seems to have played his way into a starting job at second base, had his best collegiate performance to date, going 2-for-4 with a double and a triple, scoring four runs, and driving one in.

The Buckeyes used a total of seven pitchers to get through the game, getting work for several arms that have seen limited action to this point in the season.

Fresh off an outstanding midweek start last Wednesday against Bucknell in which he allowed just four hits and struck out a career-high eight batters in 5.1 scoreless innings, sophomore Conor Curlis was on the bump for Ohio State. The southpaw had another solid outing, albeit a short one.

After tossing three scoreless innings, allowing only a single hit and striking out four, head coach Greg Beals pulled Curlis from what was called “a controlled start,” prompting questions of whether his performance thus far has merited a weekend start.

Right-handers Reece Calvert and Gavin Lyon followed Curlis, but couldn’t keep up the dominance. The pair gave up five runs in 2.2 innings, allowing YSU to hang around. Lefty Joe Stoll was effective in his 1.1 innings, but fellow southpaw Andrew Magno struggled with his control, walking three and giving up two runs while recording only one out. The bullpen for Beals still leaves a lot to be desired.

The Penguins handed the ball to right-hander Chris Sparks, who to date in 2017 had exactly 1.1 innings of work. The sophomore struggled, lasting just two innings, allowing three runs on two hits, with four walks and one strikeout.

Six others saw time on the mound for YSU, which has now lost four in a row and nine of its last ten, combining to give up nine runs on 10 hits.

The Buckeyes wasted no time in grabbing the advantage, scoring a run in the bottom of the first. Gantt and Barnwell both walked, and after a Washington strikeout, Noah McGowan singled to load the bases with one away. Zach Ratcliff then lifted a fly ball to medium left field, which scored Gantt.

Sparks was able to limit the damage, though, getting a flyout to center off the bat of Brady Cherry to strand a pair.

The YSU hurler wouldn’t be quite so lucky in the second. Bo Coolen and West worked back-to-back one-out walks and advanced into scoring position thanks to a wild pitch. Barnwell then laced a double into the left-center gap to plate the pair and push Ohio State’s lead to 3-0.

Penguins’ first-year head coach Dan Bertolini went to the bullpen for the third inning, but the result was the same. Sophomore lefty Collin Floyd took over and yielded a leadoff opposite field triple into the right field corner to McGowan, who came home to score the fourth run of the evening for the Buckeyes easily on a wild pitch.

Ohio State’s onslaught continued in the fourth as the scarlet and gray tacked on three more runs to its lead. Against senior reliever Ryan Smith, West reached on an error and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Gantt walked, and Barnwell laid down a bunt single to load the bases with nobody out. Washington delivered a sacrifice fly to center to plate West for the first run of the inning.

A failed pickoff attempt of Barnwell allowed Gantt to score, and after Smith hit McGowan with a pitch and walked Ratcliff to once again load the bases, Youngstown State went to junior Dion Felger to try to stop the bleeding. He got Connor Pohl to hit a groundball to second base, but a double play could not be turned, and Barnwell came home to make it a 7-0 ballgame.

In the fifth, YSU finally got on the board against Calvert thanks to a two-out, two-run triple by Anthony Rohan. The Penguins were unable to bring Rohan in from third, though, so the deficit stood at 7-2.

Felger’s troubles would continue in the bottom of the fifth, though, as the Buckeyes put two more runs on the board. Coolen singled and West doubled to lead things off. Gantt followed with a safety squeeze that failed in scoring the run, but resulted in a hit to load the bases, and after Barnwell struck out, Washington singled through the hole on the right side to bring both Coolen and West around.

To the credit of Bertolini and his Youngstown State team, they didn’t roll over. In the sixth, Kendrick worked a leadoff walk against Lyon, who had been newly inserted into the game from the bullpen, and two batters later, Trey Bridis launched a two-run homer over the wall in left field to once again make it a five-run game.

Lyon then walked Anthony Santoro and allowed him to move up to second on a wild pitch. After a groundout to first by Evan Cheng, Web Charles came through with a two-out RBI single to cut the lead to 9-5 and end Lyon’s outing. Stoll came on and ended the inning, but the Penguins had chipped away at the advantage.

But the theme of the day was Ohio State’s relentless scoring, and once again in the bottom of the sixth, the team put a crooked number on the scoreboard, this time against sophomore Zack Minney. Tyler Cowles had drawn a one-out walk, advanced to second and then third on wild pitches, but after Coolen was unable to drive him in, was in danger of being stranded. Then West and Gantt hit consecutive triples, accounting for two more runs and an 11-5 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Javier Alvarez managed to do what no YSU pitcher had done all game: keep the Buckeyes off the scoreboard. Youngstown State then followed the zero he put up with two runs in the top of the eighth, taking advantage of Magno’s command issues, to cut the lead to 11-7.

Ohio State scored its last run of the evening in the bottom of the eighth off junior Alex Bellardini, when once again, Barnwell delivered. This time, it was an RBI single to score Coolen, giving the Buckeyes a 12-7 lead headed to the ninth.

The Big Ten schedule gets started for Ohio State on Friday evening, when Minnesota comes to Columbus for a three-game weekend set at Bill Davis Stadium. First pitch in the lidlifter is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. ET, and the game will be streaming live on BTN Plus.

With spring practice in full swing, the Buckeyes have plenty of talent on the roster looking to make some noise.

“For Dixon, it's about remaining healthy. Don't forget that he was a top-10 national receiver prospect when he signed with Ohio State in 2014. But knee problems have kept him from ever flashing his potential.”

- Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

Spring practice at Ohio State is always an exciting time for players and fans alike, because of the intense competition that generally seems to come within the roster for spots on the depth chart. Bill Landis of Cleveland.com did a breakdown of seven players that have the most to gain from spring practices. Those players, in order, were Dante Booker, Parris Campbell, Johnnie Dixon, Dwayne Haskins, Demetrius Knox, Kendall Sheffield, and Erick Smith. Some of these make sense. Dante Booker and Johnnie Dixon have both had plenty of hype surrounding their time at Ohio State but injuries have stopped them from ever really contributing at a high level. With both healthy this spring, there’s a good chance they’ll play large roles all season.

Parris Campbell was an interesting selection, but one that isn’t hard to agree with. Campbell has shown flashes in the return game but hasn’t produced as a wide receiver just yet like the staff had hoped he would. Erick Smith is fighting for a spot at safety after the Buckeyes lost almost all of their defensive secondary last season. Overall, there are plenty of players to keep an eye on, but these are very strong contenders for some of the ones that you could be hearing about more and more as the season draws closer.

“[Mock Draft] 2. San Francisco 49ers: Malik Hooker, S, Ohio State. 5. Tennessee Titans (via Los Angeles Rams): Marshon Lattimore, CB, Ohio State”

- Dan Kadar, SB Nation

Defense is a hot commodity for the 2017 NFL Draft it appears, and Ohio State looks to provide plenty of talent in the first round coming up in April. In this latest mock draft, Two Buckeyes go in the first five picks, Malik Hooker second overall to the San Francisco 49ers, and Marshon Lattimore fifth overall to the Tennessee Titans. The two defensive backs were standouts at Ohio State last season, helping the Buckeyes secure a trip to the College Football Playoff. Their hyper-athleticism and ceilings are attractive to a lot of NFL teams and they should be successful at the next level.

A fellow defensive back, Gareon Conley, was also taken in the first round of the mock draft. Conley is slotted to the 28th overall pick, to the Dallas Cowboys. That would reunite Conley with his former teammate Ezekiel Elliott and also help the Cowboys recover losing some of their defensive secondary recently.

Damon Arnette and Denzel Ward were repping with the first team defense Tuesday, but if anyone passes the eye test its Kendall Sheffield, a JUCO transfer who started his career at Alabama”

- Ari Wasserman, Cleveland.com

One of the most interesting battles this offseason for Ohio State is in the secondary. With Malik Hooker, Marshon Lattimore, and Gareon Conley all moved on to the NFL, there are going to be at least three fresh faces starting for the Buckeyes this fall. Only Damon Webb returns as a starter. As of right now, it seems that Damon Arnette and Denzel Ward are slotted to be starting at the cornerbacks, while Kendall Sheffield, the JUCO transfer, tries to make a push. It’s totally possible that Sheffield finds himself on the field plenty this season depending on how he performs in practices. As Wasserman mentions in the article, Sheffield as a bit of an edge physically over Arnette and Ward, considering he’s been two years removed from high school already.

But this secondary has the potential to be loaded. With talented freshman entering the fold such as Jeffrey Okudah and Shaun Wade, there should be plenty of storylines to follow during the season about the progression of these individuals. The secondary will be deep unlike some years, and it’s very possible that we end up seeing some sort of rotation early on in the season.

We talk non-revenue sports, the NCAA tournament and more in our latest podcast.

It’s safe to say that Ohio State athletics is on a roll right now. We all know about the success of the football team, but between the recent triumphs in Women’s Basketball, Men’s Lacrosse, Men’s Hockey, and Wrestling, the Buckeyes’ athletic department is far more than just a one trick pony.

On this edition of The Hangout in the Holyland, Matt Brown and Colton Denning talk about the prosperity of Ohio State’s non-revenue sports, and why you should keep up with them while football is in its (relatively) quiet period. They also discuss why they think Gene Smith is one of the best Athletic Directors in the country.

With the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament also in full effect, the guys debate whether Wisconsin, Purdue, and Michigan making the Sweet 16 is enough to change the perception of Big Ten Basketball (no, it’s still bad), compare the tournament to bowl season, and Colton explains why he’s rooting for the chaos scenario of a Wisconsin-Purdue nationally championship.

Finally, Colton goes full “MY COLUMN:” on the current state of video games.

Urban Meyer welcomes a mentor and a sponsor for next month’s exhibition.

Today, the Ohio State University Football team announced that Hall of Fame coach Lou Holtz and Nike founder and Chairman Emeritus Phil Knight would be the guest coaches for April’s spring game.

The connections between Ohio State and the two guests run deep. Not only was Holtz an OSU assistant in the legendary 1968 National Championship season under Woody Hayes, but current head coach, Urban Meyer, was hired by Holtz in 1998 to be Notre Dame’s wide-receivers coach.

On the other side of the field, the Buckeyes and Nike have had a partnership for more than 20 years, and their most recent agreement continues the relationship into 2033. In addition to providing the athletic teams with apparel and equipment, the new deal also extends to products and scholarships for non-athletes as well.

The fact that the two guest coaches will be an 80 year old who hasn’t coached in over a decade, and a guy who is not a coach, should probably tell us a little bit about how intense the spring game is going to be this season. Which is fine!

The 2017 Ohio State spring game will take place at Ohio Stadium on Saturday, April 15th at 12:30pm.

LGHL Ohio State focused on in-state recruits

The Buckeyes continue to increase their efforts in recruiting in-state prospects, and it may be starting to pay off.

With the immense amount of highly-talented recruits Ohio has to offer in the 2018 college football recruiting class, Urban Meyer has made it clear that his program will up its efforts in recruiting in-state players. The coaching staff has already successfully attained one elite Ohio recruit in four-star running back Jaelen Gill (Westerville, OH / Westerville South) and it appears two more in-state targets are interested in joining him.

Alex Gleitman of Bucknuts recently reported that Ohio State will be hosting two top-ten in-state recruits this weekend and one of those recruits took to Twitter to confirm the visit.

Tyreke Smith (Cleveland, OH / Cleveland Heights) confirmed he will be visiting the program during spring practice this Saturday. The four-star defensive end is the No. 7 ranked recruit in Ohio and has been able to accumulate an impressive amount of scholarship offers heading into his senior season.

Ohio State this weekend ✊ ❗️ O-H https://t.co/73lgOq9PPz

— Tyreke Smith™ (@T_23_baller) March 20, 2017

Along with the Buckeyes, Smith holds offers from Penn State, Michigan, Michigan State, Alabama, Notre Dame, Oregon, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisville and a handful of others. However, the Buckeyes are seen as the clear favorite to earn his commitment, as the 247Sports Crystal Ball gives the Buckeyes a 73 percent in landing him.

A strong visit this weekend would only raise those odds, and with reports of him wanting to return to Columbus in a few weeks for the spring game on April 15, there is a chance Smith could be on commitment watch in the coming months.

Gleitman also reported that outside linebacker Christopher Oats (Cincinnati, OH / Winthrop Woods) was planning on visiting Ohio State this Saturday. The four-star OLB is seen as the No. 8 recruit in Ohio and while he hasn’t racked up as many offers as Smith, the offers he has received are some of Ohio State’s biggest competitors.

Oats is seeing the majority of his recruitment take place in Big Ten country, as schools like Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota and Nebraska are all courting Oats. Also, fellow in-state school Cincinnati is heavily recruiting him.

While the Buckeyes are seen as the runaway favorite in his recruitment, this weekend’s visit will be critical in separating the program from the field, most notably Cincinnati, who will likely be Ohio State’s biggest competition in this one.

Ohio State on top for Georgia CB

The only other state the Buckeyes seem to be focusing on as much as Ohio would have to be Georgia. What seems to be at least a monthly visit for Ohio State coaches, the hard work is starting to pay off as a blue-chip cornerback reportedly has the Buckeyes on the top of his list.

Tre Douglas (McDonough, GA / Eagles Landing Christian Academy) spoke with Chad Simmons of Rivals.com recently and said Ohio State is the No. 1 school for him.

2017 has been kind to Douglas, as his recruitment has skyrocketed in the last few months. Programs like Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Stanford, Texas, USC, Maryland and Nebraska have all presented the four-star CB a scholarship offer since the start of the new year.

Ohio State offered Douglas back in July of last year and it appears the early work has put the Buckeyes in prime position to land him. Douglas told Simmons he plans on committing this spring, and with no other program outside of Georgia making a major impact in his recruitment, the Buckeyes are close to stealing a good one from the peach state.

Buckeyes make the cut for rising OT

You know Urban Meyer is one of the best college football recruiters when Ohio State is included in a blue-chip prospects top 10 list before giving him a scholarship offer.

Three-star offensive tackle Rafiti Ghirmai (Frisco, TX / Wakeland) included the Buckeyes in his top 10 schools Monday. Along with the Buckeyes, Ghirmai included Alabama, LSU, TCU, Florida, UCLA, Oregon, Florida, Michigan and Texas in his list of schools he will be focusing on going forward in his recruitment.

TOP 10‼️ pic.twitter.com/gvei4kysBP

— Rafiti Ghirmai (@RafitiGhirmai) March 20, 2017

Ghirmai has been seeing more interest from top programs in the last couple months than ever before, and while the low star-ranking may question some of Buckeye Nation, a top 10 list this impressive should silence any doubters.

While the Buckeyes have yet to offer Ghirmai, the two have obviously been in contact with one another. Expect the Buckeyes to try and get him on campus sometime this year and if all goes well, an offer to follow soon.
