As if there was any doubt, mother always knows best.

One of the tried and true rules of the NFL Draft is that, upon being drafted, the first person that you must thank, after your god of choice, is your mother. While that is always the smart and safe move, tonight, it could be even more true for one former Buckeye.

Malik Hooker came to Ohio State after playing only two seasons of football at New Castle High School in Pennsylvania, and basketball was his first love. But, after earning an early OSU offer and then All-State honors, Hooker joined the Buckeyes as one of the lower-rated players in head coach Urban Meyer’s incredible 2014 recruiting class.

The safety redshirted as a true freshman, and recorded only 10 tackles in his first year on the field in 2015 before being named a starter heading into the 2016 season. Now, less than eight months later, he is on the verge of being a Top-10 NFL draft pick.

While many might say that a redshirt sophomore season that included seven interceptions, three of which were returned for scores, 11 passes defended, and 73 tackles is the main impetus for Hooker’s meteoric rise to the top of many a draft board, they would be wrong, because it all comes back to momma.

As Meyer revealed following Ohio State’s season opening win over Bowling Green last September, during his first few years in Columbus, Hooker tried to quit the team numerous times. However, his mother, Angela Dennis, kept him from giving up during those years when he was buried behind future pros on the depth chart, like Vonn Bell, Tyvis Powell, et. al.

“He came home every weekend and didn’t want to go back,” Dennis said according to the Dayton Daily News. “He would go off on long walks and not come back when he was supposed to. We’d have to go out and find him so we could take him back.”

With an assist from Hooker’s high school basketball coach Ralph Blundo, and former OSU coaches Chris Ash and Luke Fickell, Dennis was able to keep her son in Columbus, where he would eventually go on to be a first-team All-American after starting just a single season.

According to Hooker, his mother said, “I don’t know what you’re gonna do, but you’re not coming back here,’” he said. “She told me, ‘You’re gonna stick it out and it will end up working out.’”

As always, mother knows best. According to SB Nation’s Mock Draft, Hooker could go as high as second to the San Francisco 49ers tonight. Due to some lingering injury concerns that kept him from working out at the combine, other mocks have him slightly lower, but still in the top-10. The most common landing spot projected for the safety is the Los Angeles Chargers, where he would join fellow former Buckeye, Joey Bosa, on a squad that needs someone on the backend of Gus Bradley’s defense.

So, when Hooker hears NFL commissioner Roger Goodell call his name tonight, to whichever team it might be, and he eventually signs a contract for tons of first-round NFL money, it will all be thanks to momma.

1. Cleveland Browns: Myles Garret, DL, Texas A&M. Best player in the draft fills a need for the Browns

2. San Francisco 49ers: Jamal Adams, S, LSU. Pairing Adams with Reid will give the 49ers a dynamic duo.

3. Chicago Bears: Marshon Lattimore, DB, Ohio State. The best DB in the draft is available and also fills a big need.

4. Jacksonville Jaguars: Leonard Fournette, RB, LSU. Blake Bortles needs a run game to help open up the pass game.

5. Tennessee Titans: Solomon Thomas, DE, Stanford. The Titans probably really want to trade this pick to draft Mike Williams. They’ll take the best player available and hope Williams is there at 18.

6. New York Jets: Christian Mccaffery, RB, Stanford. With the depth of the secondary in this draft the Jets go with a playmaker

7. Los Angeles Chargers: Malik Hooker, DB, Ohio State. The Chargers defense will soon be known as the Silver Bolts because of all the Buckeyes on this defense.

8. Carolina Panthers: Johnathan Allen, DL, Alabama. Mccaffery is off the board they’ll look to drop the pick. Possible place for the Browns to move up. They’ll take the best player available if they keep the pick

9. Cincinnati Bengals: Reuben Foster, LB, Alabama. We all know the Bengals don’t mind taking players with red flags.

10. Buffalo Bills: Haason Reddick, LB, Temple. Reddick stock has continues to soar couple days to the draft.

11. New Orleans Saints: OJ Howard, TE, Alabama. Howard is a Top 5 talent. Though, it is to hard to justify drafting a TE that high. The Saints offense has shown how hard life has been without Jimmy Graham.

12. Cleveland Browns: Mitch Trubisky, QB, North Carolina. The Browns should not be reaching this high for a QB, but this is the Browns we are talking about.

13. Arizona Cardinals: Mike Williams, WR, Clemson. A future #! WR in the NFL. The successor at Arizona when Fitzgerald retires.

14. Philadelphia Eagles: John Ross, WR, Philadelphia. Philly needs a guy to stretch the field. Plus the secondary is still bad. They will need to just try and outscore opponents.

15. Indianapolis Colts: Derek Barnett, DL, Tennessee. The Colts continue to build the team around the defense. Just like Pagano has always wanted.

16. Baltimore Ravens: Marlon Humphrey, DB, Alabama. The best DB available. In a division with Big Ben and AJ Green you need good DB’s.

17. Washington Redskins: Charles Harris, DE, Missouri. Washington needs to upgrade the pass rush

18. Tennessee Titans: Corey Davis, WR, Central Michigan. Has the potential to be the best WR from this class.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Dalvin Cook, RB, Florida State. Another Top 10 player with character issues. The Bucs lost out on the Adrian Peterson sweepstakes and look to give Winston some help.

20. Denver Broncos: Cam Robinson, OL, Alabama. While he started at Alabama for 3 years on the left side. The right side is where he belongs in the NFL. The Broncos need more help than anyone can imagine on the OL.

21. Detroit Lions: David Nkoku, TE, Miami. Add another surprise in the first round. The Lions personnel has New England ties. We all know how deadly the Pats offense is with 2 TE’s. The Lions look to duplicate that.

22. Miami Dolphins: Forrest Lamp, OL, Western Kentucky. The Dolphins will look to move Tunsil to OT and that opens a spot and a need at OG.

23. New York Giants: Garrett Bolles, OL, Utah. The Giants need to move Flowers over to RT. Bolles has the ability to be a good LT in the NFL.

24. Oakland Raiders: Kevin King, DB, Washington. The Raiders gave up a lot of big plays in the passing game last year. With King’s size and speed. The Raiders look to limit those kind of plays.

25. Houston Texans: Evan Engram, TE, Ole Miss. The Texans surprise everyone. They’ll wait to address the QB situation in round 2 with Webb or Watson.

26. Seattle Seahawks: Adoree Jackson, DB, USC. The Seahawks need depth in the secondary. Having Jackson and Lockett would give the Seahawks great flexibility in the return game. This will maybe allow Lockett to focus on his WR skills.

27. Kansas City Chiefs: Patrick Mahomes, QB, Texas Tech. I believe that Mahomes will be the second QB off the board. I feel his skill set is exactly what Andy Reid wants. He has a quick, but funky, release. He is athletic and can make the throws in the West Coast offense.

28. Dallas Cowboys: TJ Watt, LB/DE. Wisconsin. Is Texas big enough to handle 2 Watt brothers?

29. Green Bay Packers: Tre’Davious White, DB, LSU. The Packers showed they are in need of some depth in the secondary.

30. Pittsburgh Steelers: DeShone Kizer, QB, Notre Dame. Kizer is Big Ben, but 2 inches shorter. Putting him in a stable environment and culture will help minimize his character issues.

31. Atlanta Falcons: Quincy Wilson, DB, Florida. DB is a deep position this year. After they let the Pats throw wild on them in the Super Bowl the Falcons will add depth in the secondary.

32. New Orleans Saints: Takkarist McKinley, LB, UCLA. The Saints will look to add to their pass rush after going offense with their second pick. In a division with Cam, Ryan, and Winston. You need all the pass rushers you can get.

Why watch hours of film when you can watch 30 seconds?

Danny Kelly wrote a cool article earlier this week at The Ringer this week where he broke down some of the NFL Draft’s marquee prospects in one single play. Scouts and analysts spend months reviewing all sorts of game film on prospects of all types, but why not try to sum up each prospect’s best traits in one play?

Let’s take a look at the plays that help best define Ohio State’s seven potential draftees.

Marshon Lattimore


Strengths: Freak athlete, ball skills, recovery speed.

Weaknesses: Durability, experience.

Play: It took Lattimore a season or two to work his way into the starting lineup, but it was clear he belonged from the second he stepped on the field. He consistently locked up whoever he lined up against and made plenty of flash plays throughout the season. In the below clip, Baker Mayfield was able to escape from Nick Bosa for a fleeting moment, but his downfield pass was snatched away. Lattimore demonstrates his elite ability to mirror a receiver, as well as the explosiveness and ball skills to make a play. His run after the catch is just a glimpse into the type of athleticism he brings to the table:

Malik Hooker


Strengths: Length, ball skills, play recognition.

Weaknesses: Experience, at times an inconsistent tackler.

Play: Hooker made plays from the spring game up until the Orange Bowl. Still, it was obvious that we were watching the second-coming of Ed Reed fairly early on in the season. Hooker’s ability to survey the offense from the middle of the field, before breaking on and ultimately intercepting a pass towards the sideline, was unrivaled in college football. His next-level ball skills were sure fun to watch as well:

Gareon Conley


Strengths: Length, technique, experience.

Weaknesses: Inconsistent tackler, at times struggled against quicker receivers.

Play: Conley’s impeccable technique and reserved style of play hasn’t earned him the same lofty draft expectations as Lattimore and Hooker, but he’s still a long-athletic corner that stands six-feet tall and runs a 4.4-second 40-yard dash. Conley proved over and over again that he’s more than capable of locking up any receiver in press man. Unfortunately, his interception in the below clip was waved off, but his great pattern-matching skills and ability to make a play on the ball were on full display:

Curtis Samuel


Strengths: Speed, elusiveness, hands.

Weaknesses: Route running, size, experience as receiver.

Play: Samuel is neither a running back or a wide receiver: he’s a playmaker. His breathtaking speed and agility were deployed all over the field last fall. Samuel is just as capable of taking a handoff up the middle as he is snagging a deep post down the field. Of course, his true skill is the ability to make defenders miss, something that was fully on display on Ohio State’s biggest play of the season:

Raekwon McMillan


Strengths: Run defense, strength, tackling ability, leader.

Weaknesses: Experience covering in space.

Play: McMillan somehow managed to exceed his sky-high expectations at Ohio State. A three-year starter, his ability to hold down the middle of the defense was unparalleled. McMillan’s finest hour came against Michigan, when he tied a career-high with 16 tackles. As the below clip shows, his ability to quickly decipher plays, shed blocks, and make tackles should help him enjoy a long career in the NFL:

Pat Elflein


Strengths: Versatility, leader, consistency.

Weaknesses: At times struggled against quicker defenders.

Play: Elflein went from an All-American guard to an All-American center in less than 12 months. The team captain consistently held down the interior of the Buckeyes’ line, but he proved to be capable of so much more. Elflein provided the type of versatility that offensive line coaches dream of. The below play illustrates this, as pulling centers are very rare in football — not because the play design is poor, but because it’s hard to find a center capable of getting to the outside and blocking in space like Elflein can:

Noah Brown


Strengths: Size, hands, red-zone ability, blocking.

Weaknesses: Speed, route running, experience.

Play: Yes, Brown absolutely demolished Oklahoma and his four-touchdown night will be his lasting reputation for most Buckeyes’ fans. With that said, Brown made a living taking off linebackers’ heads from the second he came on campus. The idea that Ohio State requires its wide receivers to block well has become a bit of a punchline considering their lack of success last season, but this quality was not lost on Brown. In the below clip, he takes out not one, but two Wildcats on J.T. Barrett’s game-clinching run against Northwestern this season:

The Buckeyes get one step closer to penciling in members for their 2018 and 2019 classes.

The big news that came about on the Ohio State recruiting scene on Wednesday was when 2018 small forward Darius Bazley, who had been committed to the Buckeyes since August of 2016, announced his decommitment from the program. While things on the hardwood may not be going how Ohio State would like, the silver lining is that they did get some positive news on the football side of things on Wednesday.

Tannor, Henderson down to ten


Despite not having an offer from the Scarlet and Gray at this point in his recruitment, ‘18 defensive end Caleb Tannor (Lithonia, GA / Miller Grove) certainly seems to hold the Buckeyes in high regard. The three-star prospect revealed the ten programs he is focused on via his Twitter account—and Ohio State was included.


As you can see, Tannor also included Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Mississippi State, South Carolina and Tennessee. Of those ten, the schools that have not offered yet are Clemson, LSU, South Carolina and the Buckeyes, according to 247Sports. From Ohio State’s standpoint, we will see if that offer does ultimately come for the 6-foot-3, 225-pounder. As of now, the in-state Bulldogs are the current favorite for Tannor on the Crystal Ball, as they have the lone prediction casted for the Peach State prospect.

The other prospect to include the Buckeyes in his top group was ‘19 wide receiver Arjei Henderson of Fort Bend Travis (TX)—a former Oklahoma commit. Amazingly enough, the offer from Ohio State was already No. 38 for the 6-foot-1, 179-pounder. With so much time until he ultimately signs on the dotted line, it will be interesting to see who/if any other programs jump into the mix.

Wilhoite catches Buckeye offer


Speaking of prospects in next year’s recruiting cycle, Ohio State officially jumped into the mix with ‘19 WR Lance Wilhoite of Franklin Road Academy (TN) when they threw an offer to the pass-catcher. The latest offer for the 6-foot-3, 169-pounder now gives him a dozen at this point in his recruitment.


The teams that the Buckeyes will join in the pursuit of Wilhoite include Louisville, LSU, Mississippi State, South Carolina and Tennessee. Surely more and more offers will continue to pour in for the Nashville native. 247Sports has an early four-star grade on Wilhoite and unsurprisingly, the Volunteers are the favorite on his Crystal Ball.

• Ohio State Wide Receivers coach Zach Smith was in Virginia on Wednesday checking on ‘18 inside linebacker Teradja Mitchell of Bishop Sullivan Catholic (VA). Florida State, another top competitor in the recruitment of the five-star prospect, also stopped by.
• ‘18 DE Tyreke Smith of Cleveland Heights (OH) is set to announce his Top 12 on Friday, according to his Twitter. Ohio State is expected to make the cut for the four-star Ohioan.

The Nelsonville-York junior earned a save on Monday in a win at Alexander. He was the winning pitcher on Wednesday as the Buckeyes won at River Valley, 13-9. Nelsonville-York started Garrett Maiden on the mound, but turned to Williams in the first inning.

The Coaching staff is hot on the recruiting trail, and once again they plucked another SEC type of player out of the South. Banks is another lanky Defensive Back that will potentially join the Buckeyes ultra-talented Supreme18 and they could only improve from here on out. Banks is a 6’1″, 186-pound Corner who can play Safety with his overall length. This class will see a lot of their scholarships go toward the defense. The Secondary, or BIA, will potentially lose this season’s starters IF things go like last year and IF the starters blossom during the season. Banks did not follow in his brother’s footsteps and did not follow him to Florida, but this could be a good thing for recruiting Florida and the rest of the South. This recruiting cycle will be another one for the ages, stayed tuned in for some booms. This class will be epic.
