The Buckeyes bats couldn’t be stopped as they avoided a sweep against the Spartans.

Ohio State baseball was poised to break out of its offensive funk at some point, and chose Sunday’s series finale with Michigan State to be the day. The Buckeyes racked up 21 hits in a 13-8 win over the Spartans, avoiding a weekend sweep. The team actually outscored the high-powered MSU attack 18-14 in the three games.

The scarlet and gray now stand 15-21 for the season and 4-8 in Big Ten play.

The quality of at-bats Ohio State put together the last two games was markedly better than what the club had shown over the past week. Buckeye hitters were much more aggressive right out of the chute.

Jalen Washington led off the game with a home run, part of a solid day at the plate. He went 2-for-5 and drove in two runs.

Dominic Canzone continued his recent tear, going 4-for-6 with three RBIs, and Brady Cherry had a 3-for-6 day with a home run and a pair driven in.

Tre’ Gantt, Connor Pohl, Jacob Barnwell, and Andrew Fishel also had multi-hit efforts, while Bo Coolen reached base three times himself.

As nice as the offensive explosion was, the performance of starting pitcher Reece Calvert was even bigger for the club. The junior Texan tossed 5.1 innings, being charged with four runs on just two hits and two walks, striking out three. More importantly, Calvert threw first-pitch strikes to all 20 batters he faced.

After sending a ball out of the yard in the ninth inning of Saturday’s ballgame, Washington led off this one in the same way. The Ohio State co-captain hit a 2-2 pitch off Michigan State starter Andrew Gonzalez out to deep left-center for the quick lead.

Also just as in Saturday’s ninth inning, Gantt followed Washington’s home run with a double. Unlike yesterday, the Buckeyes brought him home. After a throwing error by Spartans’ shortstop Royce Ando allowed Gantt to advance to third, an RBI groundout by Coolen made it a 2-0 lead.

The lead would be short-lived, though, as Michigan State came right back in the bottom half of the first against Calvert. After an Ando walk with one out, Dan Durkin sent a two-run crush job out to right to even the score.

Washington would help Ohio State reclaim the lead for good in the top of the second, driving in Pohl with a single to make it a 3-2 game.

Gonzalez would be knocked out of the game in the third. Canzone tripled lead to things off and Coolen walked. But Canzone got himself caught in a rundown on a ball off the bat of Barnwell. The freshman stayed alive long enough for Coolen to advance to third and Barnwell to make it to second before being tagged out.

But the Buckeyes were unable to cash in on the scoring opportunity. Reliever Mitchell Tyranski struck out Pohl and Shea Murray was robbed of a hit at the wall in right to escape the threat.

Ohio State kept the pressure on, though, in a departure from recent games. With two outs in the fourth, Gantt collected his second hit on a seeing-eye single through the right side of the infield. He came around to score on a double down the left field line by Cherry. Canzone followed that with a double of his own to score Cherry and push the lead out to 5-2.

A walk to Coolen ended Tyranski’s day, and Nathan Witt came out of the bullpen to retire Barnwell and strand two more Buckeye baserunners.

Meanwhile, Calvert really settled in. After the first inning homer, the big righty set down 18 straight Spartans and put four zeroes on the scoreboard.

In the fifth, the Ohio State onslaught continued, blowing the game wide open. Pohl picked up his second hit of the afternoon with a single to center to lead things off against Witt and Murray followed with his first career home run, tacking two more runs onto the lead.

An infield single by Fishel and a third hit of the day for Gantt followed that, and Canzone delivered a two-run opposite-field single to blow things wide open at 9-2. The freshman then stole second and scored the 10th Buckeye run of the day on a Coolen single, and after a balk sent Coolen to second, Barnwell delivered an RBI base-hit, making it an 11-2 ballgame and ending Witt’s outing.

Michigan State finally got a baserunner against Calvert with one out in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a double by Bryce Kelley. Ando worked his second free pass of the game, and Ohio State went to the bullpen. Sophomore lefty Connor Curlis relieved, and was rudely greeted by Durkin, who hit his second longball of the day. The three-run shot cut the lead to 11-5.

The Spartans chipped away at the lead a little more in the bottom of the seventh, with a two-out double and single against Kyle Michalik to cut the deficit to five.

Murray got that run back in the top of the eighth, walking to lead the inning off and eventually scoring when Michigan State reliever Jake Lowery threw away a pickoff attempt.

Buckeye closer Seth Kinker was brought into the game in the seventh. In the eighth, he walked a pair and yielded RBI singles to Marty Bechina and Dan Chielewski to make it a 12-8 game.

Cherry topped off the scoring with a solo home run leading off the top of the ninth, his fourth of the season. Kinker sealed the victory in the bottom of the frame.

The scarlet and gray will now return home to host a midweek game with Northern Kentucky on Wednesday night before a tough three-game nonconference weekend set at Bill Davis Stadium with UNC-Greensboro opens on Friday.

MotS&G Big Buckeye Recruiting Saturday

Big Buckeye Recruiting Saturday

By Trevor Arnold

To quote Mark Pantoni “Booooooooooom.”

Finally, a Saturday with Buckeye football is back. It has been too long without any college football, especially after Ohio State’s disappointing loss to Clemson in the College Football Playoffs. But the Spring Game is the official start to a new season.

As most people were waking up on Saturday, the Buckeyes got a surprise commit from Max Wray. A once commit for the Georgia Bulldogs, Wray is the #4 Offensive Tackle, according to 247sports.

Wray is 6-foot-6.5 and weighs 289. He has excellent size and power. Another Buckeye commit Emory Jones certainly liked the commitment from Wray, as he sends a welcome tweet to his new lineman.

During halftime of the Spring Game, Ohio State got another surprise commit. This time from Josh Proctor. Proctor is from Oklahoma, and was seen to be an Oklahoma lean. This is a big time get for the Buckeyes, and the fans will love having this 4-star safety.

Proctor at 6 ft-2, 190 pounds has great length and speed. Also great ball pursuit. Then when he finds the ball carrier, he puts a huge hit on them.

This Saturday has been a great day for Buckeye fans. With the addition of these two commits, Ohio State has 6 players ranked in the top 67 players, and all 7 players are ranked in the top 100.

Ohio State is now ranked 5th in the nation in recruiting with only 7 total recruits with the average grade being 97.5.

The Buckeyes left the tying run in scoring position in the ninth as they fell, 6-5, to the Spartans.

Ohio State baseball may have officially lost its fourth game in a row and third Big Ten series of the season on Saturday, but the Buckeyes showed tremendous fight. A ninth inning rally came up just short, though, and the club fell to Michigan State by a score of 6-5.

Behind 6-4 in the final frame, a leadoff solo home run by Jalen Washington cut the lead to one. Tre’ Gantt followed with a double to put the tying run in scoring position with nobody out, but the club’s continued struggles to cash in on such opportunities proved to be its undoing.

The scarlet and gray went just 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position and went down on strikes 14 times.

The real story for Ohio State had little to do with what went on in the ballgame, though, as starting pitcher Jake Post appeared to be hit in the head by a comebacker in the bottom of the first inning and had to leave the game. After spending some time on the ground, the redshirt senior was able to stand up and walk off the field under his own power, but it was a scary moment.

Ryan Feltner took over on the mound and after an extremely shaky start, settled in. The sophomore right-hander allowed four runs (one of which was charged to Post) after being rushed into duty in the first, but then set down eight straight batters. His final line included five runs on seven hits in five innings of work, with seven strikeouts, but more importantly no walks.

Despite the loss, it was an encouraging outing for Feltner, who has had major issues with command all season long and lost his spot in the weekend rotation a few weeks ago.

There were more offensive bright spots in this one than the club has experienced of late as well. Freshman Connor Pohl, getting the start at second base, had his best day as a collegiate player, going 2-for-3 at the dish with a run batted in and his first career double. Fellow frosh Dominic Canzone, who on Wednesday night against Eastern Michigan had his 10-game hitting streak snapped, started a new one, collecting a pair of walks and two hits in five trips to the plate, including a solo home run.

Bo Coolen was also on base two times and drove in a run, and Gantt had a 3-for-5 effort, as Ohio State, which has been in a major funk offensively, banged out 12 hits and scored more runs than it had in the past three games combined.

The ball that struck Post came off the bat of Michigan State’s Dan Durkin after two strikeouts in the home half of the first. Durkin ended up on second base on the play, and in a classy move, he approached Post and shook his hand before he exited the field.

Once Feltner entered the game, MSU scored the first of four runs of the game before the inning ended. Matt Byars singled up the middle to drive Durkin home, and after another two-out single, Zack McGuire hit a three-run homer deep to right-center.

The Buckeyes were able to respond in the second. Canzone singled to lead things off and stole second base. He would score two batters later when Coolen doubled to the right-center gap. Two batters after that, Pohl doubled to the other gap to bring Coolen home, cutting the deficit in half.

Ohio State crept closer the next inning, thanks in large part to the legs of Gantt. The junior center fielder singled, stole second, stole third, and scored on a Noah McGowan RBI groundout off Spartans’ reliever Walter Borkovich to make it a 4-3 ballgame.

Borkovich had entered the game in place of starter Ethan Landon, who lasted just just two innings and struggled with his command. The righty gave up three runs on four hits, walking a pair and striking out three.

Driving in runners in scoring position, particularly with two outs, has been a consistent problem for the Buckeyes in 2017, and it persisted on Saturday. In the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, the team had chances, but came up empty.

Despite those missed opportunities, Feltner kept the team in the game, working around fourth and fifth inning scoring chances for the Spartans. He threw 64 of 89 pitches for strikes, and in addition to the punchouts, induced a high rate of weak contact.

But Michigan State entered the weekend with one of the top two offensive attacks in the Big Ten, and couldn’t be held down forever. In the sixth, a two-out single by Royce Ando preceded a home run to left by Dan Chmielewski, pushing the lead out to 6-3.

Canzone got one back with his second home run of the season, a shot to right field off Spartans’ lefty Joe Mockbee. Washington got his off closer Riley McCauley, but after Gantt’s double, the right-hander struck out the side to end the game.

To avoid the series sweep, the Buckeyes will need to pull out a win in the third game on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. ET in East Lansing, with the game streaming live on BTN Plus.

The crowd size, like The Spot, was good.

Ohio State opened the day by stomping all over Michigan’s lacrosse team. Then, they got to enjoy live coverage on BTN while Michigan’s game will have to be broadcasted on tape delay. And once the games wrapped up, they picked up another W over That School Up North.

Ohio State clobbered Michigan in spring game attendance. Michigan reported 57,418 in attendance for their game, while Ohio State had 80,143.

Ohio Stadium, of course, wasn’t at full capacity today thanks to stadium renovations closing some of the upper decks. Before the game, university officials expected a sellout.

It says a lot about the devotion of Buckeye fans that so many are willing to not only attend, but pay (tickets were only five bucks, but still) to attend a giant practice. That helps create a strong atmosphere for the game, helping recruiting efforts. That paid off today, as the Buckeyes have secured two blue-chip commitments today.

Hopefully everybody had fun out there.

The best possible ending to a spring football game.

Ohio State fans are no stranger to the heroic story of Buckeye superfan Jacob Jarvis.

Jarvis, a young man who’s battled Duchenne muscular dystrophy, has been a staple of the Ohio State football program during Urban Meyer’s time in Columbus. Former Ohio State (now Denver Broncos) tight end Jeff Heuerman forged a special bond with Jarvis and his family and during the Buckeyes’ 2014 national title run, Jarvis was seen just about everywhere with the team.

If our heartstrings didn’t need an even deeper tug, we got one during the end of the Buckeyes’ 2017 spring football game. On the final play of the final drive, OSU starter J.T. Barrett returned to the game, with a familiar face at running back: Jarvis.

After getting the handoff from Jarvis, the young man booked it to the end zone where he was mobbed by his Ohio State teammates. What an incredible moment for Buckeye Nation and sports fan everywhere alike:

According to 97.1 The Fan’s Lori Schmidt, a handful of Buckeye upperclassmen lobbied the coaching staff to end the game on what is now being called “The Jacob Special.”

Jacob Jarvis, who is battling MD, said Jalyn Holmes, Tyquan Lewis and JT Barrett lobbied for him to be able to score a TD today... 1/2

Wide receivers and backup quarterbacks impress in the Scarlet and Gray game.

Ohio State fans got their first official look at the 2017 Buckeye football team on Saturday in the annual Scarlet and Gray game. While admittedly the results of a spring game rarely indicate regular season success, there was plenty to buoy the Buckeyes’ optimism for the upcoming fall slate. With yet another year of substantial turnover in the player and coaching ranks, the OSU coaching staff used the spring game to see where the team stood, especially in terms of the passing game.

Though the spring scrimmage was played in front of a sellout crowd, Ohio Stadium’s capacity was considerably smaller on Saturday than for normal games, spring or fall. With renovations taking place in C-deck, just over 82,000 tickets were sold for this year’s spring game, which saw former Nike Chairman Phil Knight and College Football Hall of Fame coach Lou Holtz serve as Guest Coaches for the Gray and Scarlet teams respectively.

To the surprise of nearly everyone, the game’s opening quarter was played with little to no hitting, as the offensive players were marked down by contact. While the early limitations handicapped the defense, it made for an exciting offensive display, as fans got a healthy dose of what new Offensive Coordinator Kevin Wilson’s fast-paced scheme could look like.

On the first drive for the Gray team, starting quarterback J.T. Barrett led the team down the field for a touchdown. Tight-end A.J. Alexander capped the first drive with the short reception. His second catch of the series.

Joe Burrow, the odds-on favorite to back up Barrett in the fall, opened the Scarlet team’s first drive, but after a couple of plays was replaced by Dwayne Haskins. The two alternated snaps throughout the drive.

Haskins got the Scarlet team on the board with a beautifully thrown ball to Johnnie Dixon for an 18-yard touchdown.

On the Gray team’s second drive, after handing off to running back Mike Weber, Barrett swung out and Weber completed a 17-yard pass for the first razzle-dazzle of the day.

After a field goal put the Gray team on top 10-7, Scarlet answered on a 35-yard touchdown pass from Burrow to former walk-on running back-turned-wide receiver Ke’Von Huguely. In all fairness, had the defense been allowed to hit the quarterbacks, the play likely would have ended in a sack or worse.

On the next drive, in the middle of throwing a deep ball, a Gray lineman was blocked into Barrett, causing his deep-ball to float and be picked off by Damon Arnette. On the first play following the quarter break, Dixon caught a 44-yard touchdown pass, this time from Burrow, putting the Scarlet team up 21-10.

The second quarter saw a number of differences on the field, first Haskins replaced Barrett as the quarterback for the Gray team, and defenders were allowed to tackle. The teams traded scores the remainder of the quarter to go into halftime with the Scarlet team leading 28-24.

In one quarter of action, Barrett finished 8-12 for 71 yards, a touchdown, and a pick. After the first half, Burrow was an impressive 12 for 16 for 240 yards and three TDs, while Haskins was 9-13 for 153 yards and two scores. While the quarterbacks played against different defenders, it ended up being a fairly positive day for each of Ohio State’s top-three QBs. Both Burrow and Haskins continued into the second half.

With a slightly more run-focused third quarter, the Gray team pulled even at 31 with the Scarlet squad before the end of the quarter. DeMario McCall led both teams on the ground with 83 yards on six carries; he also finished with two catches for 48 yards. Weber saw limited action, picking up 13 yards on five early carries.

With just five minutes remaining in the game, true-freshman quarterback Tate Martell ran into the endzone to put the Scarlet team up 38-31. Martell finished the game for the Scarlet team, going 1-2 for 11 yards throwing and picking up 24 yards on the ground on two carries.

With the Scarlet team’s victory already assured, the Meyer called in Buckeye superfan Jacob Jarvis to finish the game as the team’s tailback. After taking the handoff from Barrett, Jarvis weaved his wheelchair through the Gray defense to cap the afternoon’s scoring at 44-31 in favor of the Scarlet squad.

The losing Gray team had to walk from the ‘Shoe to the Woody Hayes Center, and will be pulling landscaping duty in Buckeye Grove later this spring.

Ohio State will kick off the 2017 season on Thursday, August 31st in Bloomington, IN.

3 things we learned:

1. J.T. Barrett is the starter, but the backup battle is gonna be fun. First off, for everyone feverishly typing tweets and message board posts about how J.T. Barrett needs to be benched in favor of Joe Burrow, push away from the keyboard, go outside, take a walk, and come back when you’ve calmed down.

Barrett is, was, and will be Ohio State’s starting quarterback until he graduates, unless an injury or other unforeseen issue dictates otherwise.

However, the impressive spring game showings by Burrow and Haskins, should give Buckeye fans plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the future, should Barrett go down this season, and for when he is gone in 2018. It also will lead to one of the most interesting storylines for this fall’s camp.

Burrow had a great outing, especially in the first half, showing a tremendous touch on balls both short and long. Haskins was a little more hit-or-miss, alternating between teams Scarlet and Gray, but they both proved that should Ohio State need a backup to step in and play, whomever ends up winning the battle will be up for the challenge.

2. The deep passing game looked... dare we say it? Promising. With the embarrassing shutout against Clemson in January’s Fiesta Bowl still fresh in everyone’s minds, one of the big questions coming into the spring game was whether or not Ohio State’s passing game would look any different with Wilson now at the helm.

While again tempering the excitement from a scrimmage with rotating rosters and flexible rules, OSU’s wide receivers looked impressive. Johnnie Dixon, Terry McLaurin, K.J. Hill, Eric Glover-Williams, and others looked strong both in terms of their hands and route-running. Both Dixon and McLaurin caught a pair of touchdowns, and in limited action, Parris Campbell looked promising moving from WR to H-back.

3. We might finally see Ohio State use its tight-ends this year. Starting tight-end Marcus Baugh was held out of the spring game due to injury, which gave sophomore A.J. Alexander and freshman Luke Farrell the opportunity to get extra reps.

The pair combined for five catches for 50 yards, and Alexander scored a first quarter touchdown, but what was most striking about the use of the tight-ends in the game is that they were allowed to get more depth on routes than they have been in recent seasons.

With Wilson coaching the TEs in addition to his responsibilities as O-cor, this should be an exciting development for the legions of fans that have voiced displeasure about the position’s lack of productivity under Meyer in recent years.
