Noah Brown, WR (Dallas Cowboys):


Noah Brown was the first Buckeye taken on Day 3 of the draft, and better late than never. At 6’2″, 222-pounds, Brown is an imposing Wide Receiver with the size to bully the smaller Defensive Backs and box them out for the football. He couldn’t have gone to a better team, and he joins fellow Buckeye Ezekiel Elliot in Dallas. Brown has Dez Bryant and Cole Beasley to work with and he will compete with the rest of the receiving group for reps and a roster spot. During the 2016 season, Brown was used heavily early on in the year, but the lack of creativity in playcalling derailed his once promising season. In the Oklahoma game, Brown was the go-to guy and he bullied his way to a stellar 4 touchdown game at Norman, Oklahoma. He made highlight reel catches early and often and he gave the Sooner Defense fits. After that however, his usage declined with a combination of poor line play and playcalling on offense. He was underutilized and could have used another year in college, as he left for the NFL and caught the team unexpectedly. Brown is a project, but he has the skills to flourish in Dallas’ offense. He has a few injury concerns, but he should be in good hands.

Urban Meyer’s H-back has found his way into the league.

Former Ohio State H-back Dontre Wilson was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Los Angeles Chargers after being passed up on in the 2017 NFL Draft, according to Land of 10’s Ryan Ginn. Getting skipped in the draft wasn’t the most surprising thing in the world, given the injuries that hampered Wilson in his last few seasons in Columbus. But now he’s healthy and ready to try to crack a roster.

How did Wilson do at the combine?


Wilson wasn’t invited to the NFL combine, so he had to settle for trying to impress scouts at Ohio State’s pro day. He attempted the 40-yard dash twice, clocking his best time at 4.59. His reputation as a speedster made this figure a little disappointing, but he did report that he’d tweaked his hamstring shortly before running in the event.

He also ran receiver drills, reeling in a nice one-handed grab in the back of the end zone and showcasing his route running ability.

How good was Wilson in college?


In the high-octane 2016 Ohio State offense, Dontre Wilson managed to find the end zone six times (five of those coming through the air), and totaled 430 yards between the ground game and passing game. He also returned 17 punts (with four fumbles, only one of which was lost) and three kickoffs, with averages of 6.3 and 20.7 yards respectively.

The DeSoto, TX native came into Columbus with high expectations, given his speed and game-breaking ability. He rose to the challenge in his first season as a Buckeye, and looked to be on track for big numbers his sophomore season before he started missing games with a foot injury.

Wilson struggled at times to find breathing room in an offense loaded with weapons that often went conservative at the first sign of trouble. He finished his Buckeye career with 62 carries and 77 catches totaling 1,353 yards and 12 touchdowns. That he was good for almost 10 yards per touch shows he’s got skills; the only question he has left to answer is whether or not he can finally put all of those skills together to make his numbers match his talent.

Seriously, Wilson’s got skills. It felt like he was always a shoestring tackle away from busting a run wide open during his Buckeye years, but he showed flashes of tremendous running, catching, and even blocking ability at times under Urban Meyer.

Terrible, terrible break for the former Ohio State wide receiver.

Few have ever been as prolific at reeling in deep balls as Devin Smith was at Ohio State.

His NFL career, on the other hand, has been star-crossed to say the least. Battling one injury after another, Smith’s never been able to reproduce his production at the college ranks. In part, because of the Jets’ hot mess of a quarterback situation, but even more so because of just brutal, criminally unfair injury luck.

Jets GM Mike Maccagnan said Saturday, during the third and final day of the 2017 NFL Draft, that Smith’s been lost again, this time for the 2017 NFL season:


Smith’s rookie year included fracturing a rib/puncturing his lung in training camp, causing him to miss time and get behind in his development. Then, just four months later, Smith tore his ACL, missing the rest of the 2015 season.

Smith missed most of his “sophomore season” with the Jets, still recovering from the after-effects of that December 2015 right ACL injury. That appears to be the same knee he injured again this past week.

While we certainly hope this isn’t the end, at a certain point, it almost becomes about ensuring his quality of life post-football. Whether Smith decides to shut it down -- which surely no one would fault him for — or he makes one more near-heroic effort at rehabbing and giving the brutality of pro football another shot, we’re certainly rooting for him either way.

The Buckeyes just sent yet another wide receiver to the NFL.

Noah Brown was drafted No. 239 overall in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. With the selection, Brown and is now the fifth Ohio State wideout drafted in the last three years.

How did Brown do at the combine?


Brown opted out of the 40-yard dash in Indianapolis, but posted a 4.57 second time at his pro day workout. However, he did participate in other drills, finishing second among wideouts on the bench press (19 reps of 225 pounds), while posting 4.33 and 7.07 second times in the 20-yard shuttle and three cone drills, respectively.

How good was Brown in college?


A four-star recruit out of Sparta (NJ), Brown saw the field right away in 2014, playing in 11 games as a freshman. Though he totaled only one catch for nine yards, Brown was a huge asset in the run game, serving up devastating blocks, and helping the Buckeyes win the 2014 National Championship.

With word circulating that he was tearing it up during 2015 fall camp, many expected a big year from Brown, but an unfortunate broken leg during camp sidelined him for the season. After a year of rehab, he made good on that promise in 2016 by playing in all 13 games, a bursting onto the scene with a 4 touchdown day against Oklahoma, including this epic catch:


Brown finished the season with 32 catches for 402 yards and seven touchdowns, earning honorable mention All-Big Ten honors.

I know this is an old thread, so I've no idea if you'll see this, ScarletBlood31. Ran across this while googling about my family history.

For what it is worth, I grew up with a copy of this magazine. It was one of the few pictures I had of my paternal grandfather. I don't know much about the man, he left my grandmother when my father was 6 mo old. My dad reached out to him in the mid 90s, shortly before Paul Sarringhaus died. He informed my father of his health history to better understand health problems that my father, and now I, suffer from. Other than that Paul Sarringhaus, at that time, was not interested in his son or grand children. I do not know his circumstances prior to that, including why he left. My family didn't talk about it.

I am proud of my grandfather's accomplishments at OSU and in the war. His athletic genes also surely helped my father and myself have successful careers in college athletics. I don't know much about his personal or family life, so I cannot say anything about that. I do wish I had a chance to talk to him back in the 90s, but he was not open to that.

You asked about who Sarringhaus was. That gave me the opportunity to share what I know of him. Thank you for starting the thread and letting me share. And thank you for posting that pic, ScriptOhio.

Few, if any, punters get drafted each year. Will the Buckeye be the latest?

Strengths

• Big leg punter who creates lots of fair catches.
• Highly accurate when trying to pinpoint punts.
• Few touchbacks and high frequency of inside-20 punts.

Weaknesses

• Johnston was a rugby punter in college which NFL teams don’t use. The good news is he can punt both ways, he and Ohio State just elected not to strategically.
• Needs to improve his hang time in the NFL to further improve his number of fair catches.

Per WalterFootball.com, Johnston is projected to be picked anywhere between the 6th round to not being picked and becoming an undrafted free agent.

Outlook


Regardless of his draft status, Johnston will almost certainly get NFL camp invites and will battle for an NFL punting job. The biggest question facing him is whether he can switch punting styles from his rugby punts — and early indications show that he can. The Buckeyes fans’ favorite punter will look to continue improving and make an NFL roster this fall.

The Buckeyes will play host to the former Panther next week.

Having numerous scholarships available now, Thad Matta and the Ohio State basketball program are looking to fill the open slots with not just uncommitted class of 2017 prospects, but also proven college players looking for a new home as transfers.

Reportedly showing interest in Howard point guard James Daniel and Elijah Long of Mount St. Mary’s, the Buckeyes will play host to one of the most sought after transfers left on the market.

Fresh off a visit to Kentucky, former University of Pittsburgh playmaker Cameron Johnson will make the trek to Columbus on Monday to see what the Buckeyes have to offer before heading out west for a trip to Arizona, per Jeff Goodman:


A grad transfer with two seasons of eligibility left, the 6’8, 210-pound guard could step right in for the rebuilding Buckeyes and help take some of the pressure off losing players such as Marc Loving and potentially Kam Williams.

Last season as a redshirt sophomore at Pittsburgh, Johnson, a Moon Township, PA native, averaged 11.9 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per ball game.

Not just a leader on the court, he’s also a standout in the classroom. Enrolled in the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences at Pitt, Johnson is a two-time All-ACC Academic pick and a 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-District selection.

The receiver bounced back from injury to be a playmaker for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State fans waited years to see the talent from wide receiver Noah Brown that Coach Meyer and staff lauded since 2014. Finally, his 2016 showed everyone exactly what he is capable of when he’s healthy.

Despite a leg injury that kept him out for the better part of two seasons, he finally broke into the starting lineup last year and was the big playmaker the Buckeyes needed. With the departure of Devin Smith and then Michael Thomas, Brown stepped up admirably.

Measurements

Brown didn’t participate in the 40-yard dash at the combine, but did run it at Ohio State’s pro day workout.

Strengths

• Size. He’s one of the bigger receivers in the draft class, and can be a headache for defenses. He can pluck the ball out of the air right over the defensive back and come up with a big play.
• Physical. His size helps with this, but he attacks the ball regardless of who is in his way, and has a mean stiff arm to give him a little more separation.

Weaknesses

• He’s raw but talented. He only had one full season with the Buckeyes, but he made that season count in spite of his own scheme at times. He clearly would’ve been in the starting rotation had he been healthy his first two seasons, but still has a lot to improve on at the next level.
• Route-running. Due to his extended stay on the sideline, he isn’t quite as polished as some of the three and four year receivers coming out this year. His speed can cause issues for defenders, but he doesn’t make the cleanest cuts to utilize any initial separation.

Per SB Nation’s Dan Kadar, Brown ranks No. 25 among the receiver prospects in this year’s draft class. His inexperience and drop in production following the Oklahoma game lends to his lower ranking, but he could make some team very happy with a late-round pick.

Outlook


Brown definitely still has some development before he becomes a starting receiver in the NFL, but he’s got the skills to be a breakout player with a year or two of experience. Teams covet having a big receiver on the outside who can come down with contested balls, and Brown is that guy.

Curtis Samuel, WR (Carolina Panthers):


Curtis Samuel was the first Buckeye that was taken on Day 2 of the 2017 Draft, being selected with the 40th overall pick by the Panthers. The Panthers have spent picks on back to back offensive studs due to the losses of Ohio State Alums Ted Ginn and Corey Brown during free agency. With Samuel the Panthers will be getting a playmaker just like McCaffery who can play multiple positions. Both players have the speed and they will help Cam Newton give opposing teams defenses fits. Samuel will be used early and he will work in the slot, and he may see some time at Running Back. Samuel is 5’11” and 196-pounds and turned in a 4.31 40-time in the combine. His measurable and his talent will be utilized to spread the opposing defenses and keeping them honest during games. He will share time with McCaffrey, but I feel like Ron Rivera will give both draftees ample opportunities to shine.

Raekwon McMillan, ILB (Miami Dolphins):


Raekwon McMillan, a recruit out of the Peach State was the second Buckeye taken in Round 2. At 6’2″, 240 pounds he is the motor that was in charge of the Buckeye defense the last two and a half seasons. He has the speed and the leadership abilities that will continue to flourish at the next level. He is viewed as a 3 down linebacker and he must show development to see some playing time this fall. McMillan is the first Inside Linebacker taken over Vanderbilt’s own Zach Cunningham, and he will be behind newly acquired addition Lawrence Timmons and Kiko Alonso, who re-signed with the team this offseason. Behind both of them McMillan will have the time to develop under Timmons, who arrived after time in Pittsburg and Alonso, who was still hasn’t established himself in the league yet. McMillan’s only concern is in coverage, but he is a sure-tackler, who can stuff the run when called to. He can become great with some time, so I can see him as a back-up for now, but he can flourish with the right coaches in place.

Pat Elflein, C (Minnesota Vikings):


Pat Elflein was the Swiss Army Knife out of Ohio State who can play multiple positions along the Offensive Line. During the Ohio State Championship year Elflein began at Guard and then the following season he seamlessly switched to Center, where he earned the award for the Top Interior Lineman Award in his last season at Ohio State. At 6’3″, 303-pounds he will compete with the likes of Joe Berger and Nick Easton for the starting Center gig in Minnesota. If he cannot beat out the others at Center, Elflein can compete for the starting job at Guard opposite of former Ohio State Alum Alex Boone. The Vikings have another Guard in waiting and all Elflein needs is an opportunity to play and earn playing time. The Vikings drafted Dalvin Cook in the Second round and he will look to Elflein to block for the fellow rookie in the upcoming season. Elflein is a tireless blocker that almost always finishes until the whistle is blown. There are questions about his overall strength, but with an NFL Caliber strength and conditioning program, he will improve.

Former Ohio State OL Pat Elflein was drafted at No. 70 overall in the 3rd round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings.

How did Elflein do at the combine?


Elflein’s combine wasn’t as strong as it could have been, as he posted numbers that were surpassed by several other highly-touted linemen. The 6’3, 303-pound Elflein was never known in college for his quickness or movement, but for his physical strength and high football IQ, so this wasn’t as much of a knock on him as it might have been. He posted 22 reps on the bench press, a 5.32 40 time, and a 99-inch broad jump.

How good was Elflein in college?


Combine results be damned, the former Pickerington (OH) standout was unquestionably a star in his senior season. In his first year playing the position, he won the 2016 Rimington Trophy as the nation’s top center. He was a first team All-American, the Big Ten’s top lineman, and the captain of one of the four best teams in college football. Not bad for a former three-star recruit.

This is made all the more impressive in light of his play at other positions along the line, where he spent his first few seasons. He was the national championship team’s starting right guard, starting for two years at that position, and also played spot duty at left guard. His first game with the Buckeyes with real playing time was a memorable one, as he replaced an ejected Marcus Hall after the infamous dustup against Michigan in 2013.

Going against the likes of Joey Bosa, Adolphus Washington, and Sam Hubbard in practice every day certainly didn’t hurt Elflein’s development. He used that experience to excel against some of the best pass-rushers in college football when they Buckeyes played them, and he’s well-positioned to succeed at the next level because of it.
