Well, that wasn’t easy.

And I’m not talking about Pierre Dorion’s struggle to get a high-five or hug after his Ottawa Senators clinched a first round series victory over the Boston Bruins.

— The 6th Sens (@6thSens) April 23, 2017

Yes, for only the second time in 10 years, the Senators have reached the second of the playoffs, but it was a struggle getting there.

Every one of the six games versus the Bruins was decided by one goal and four of the games went into overtime and really.

The puck possession metrics mirrored the tightly contested scores.

5v5 Senators Bruins
CF% 50.34 49.66
FF% 51.67 48.33
SF% 52.28 47.72
GF% 52.63 47.37
SCF% 47.77 52.23

It was a series that could have truly gone either way and although there was a significant disparity heading into the series regarding the underlying possession metrics, the Senators were able to overcome this difference thanks to the injuries that afflicted the Bruins’ blue line and the performance of their captain, Erik Karlsson.

Not only did Karlsson tally six assists, the Senators (per NaturalStatTrick.com) generated 56.7-percent of the shots, 70.0-percent of the goals and 53.15-percent of the scoring chances when Erik Karlsson was on the ice at five-on-five.

Having already won two Norris Trophies and meriting last year’s and this year’s as well, it’s hard to imagine Erik Karlsson was capable of taking his game to another level, but not only did he single-handedly dominate the Bruins with his point production and puck possession, he did it while essentially playing on one leg.

Karlsson admitted at the conclusion of the series that he had been playing with two hairline fractures in his left heel and was receiving injections to dull the pain.

“I’ve been playing on shots here,” said Karlsson, who admitted he was having trouble moving to his left. “It’s frustrating because you’ve worked so hard all year, but it’s better now and by Thursday it should be pretty much back to normal,” he said.

He suffered the injury blocking a shot during the Senators’ March 28th game against the Philadelphia Flyers – which caused him to miss three of the Senators’ final five regular season games.

Karlsson believes he will be good to go by game one on Thursday versus the New York Rangers.

Every extra day of rest matters for Karlsson since the Senators will be relying on him to be at his best if they are to have any hope of moving past the Rangers who are an entirely different animal from the Bruins.

Here is a look at the two teams’ regular season statistics and how they match up:

PP (Rk) PK (Rk)
Senators 17.0 (T-23rd) 79.7 (22nd)
Rangers 20.2 (T-10th) 79.8 (T-19th)

CF% FF% SF% xGF% GF% SCF%
Senators 48.55 48.80 50.10 49.13 48.91 49.70
League Rk 22nd 22nd 17th 20th 20th 19th
————– ——– ——– ——– ——— ——– ———
Rangers 47.95 48.78 48.63 49.94 52.02 50.56
League Rk 25th 23rd 23rd 18th 12th 16th

It feels like it’s been a hell of a long time since their seven-game 2012 series when Brian Boyle rabbit punched Erik Karlsson and Matt Carkner and Chris Neil exacted revenge. Kyle Turris’ iconic OT winner from game six is a lasting memory and it also represents the last time anyone has seen or heard from Jim O’Brien.

In 2012, it was a tightly contested series and I don’t expect anything different now.

On the surface, the teams’ numbers are eerily similar, but unlike the Bruins, the Rangers’ don’t appear to have any significant advantage over the Senators in the underlying possession metrics.

Although Boston’s clear advantage over the Senators was mitigated thanks to key injuries to David Krejci and three of their top four defencemen missing time due to injury, the Rangers problems seem to be caused by their personnel or their system. Hell, maybe it’s probably both.

One of the Rangers’ obvious shortcomings in recent years has been their blue line and overreliance on traditional defencemen like Dan Girardi and Marc Staal, but due to the emergence of players like Nick Holden and Brady Skjei as well as their trade deadline addition of Brendan Smith, who has been a decent possession player in the past, I assumed the Rangers’ underlying metrics would improve.

I was wrong.

After the trade deadline, the Rangers’ possession metrics continued to be bad as they were beforehand.

Here are the Rangers’ numbers following the NHL’s trade deadline on March 1st:

CF% FF% SF% xGF% GF% SCF%
Rangers 47.76 48.35 47.98 45.94 51.28 46.28

The numbers lead me to believe that the Rangers play a conservative, counterattack style that preys on the opposition making mistakes and overly relies on their Hall of Fame goaltender to take them as far as he can go.

Against the Canadiens, the Rangers’ puck possession woes continued (47.33 CF%), but Henrik Lundqvist bailed out his teammates by stopping 95.2 of the opposition’s even strength shots.

Playing into Ottawa’s advantage is that the Rangers lack an elite forward trio like Marchand-Bergeron-Pastrnak that can take over shifts at will and hem the Senators into their own end.

According to Corsica.Hockey’s data, the Bergeron line posted the following numbers at five-on-five:

TOI 43.59
CF% 53.33
SCF% 57.14

Although the Senators did a good job of obstructing shots and forcing rushed shots that missed the net, Patrice Bergeron created a matchup problem whenever he and his linemates stepped onto the ice.

The Dion Phaneuf and Cody Ceci were often tasked with the responsibility of keeping this line in check, the pairing did a lot of bending, but they didn’t break as often as the numbers suggested they should have.

Again via Corsica.Hockey’s data, here’s how Ottawa’s second pairing fared at five-on-five:

TOI 56.35
CF% 41.67
xGF% 38.76
SCF% 35.71

The Senators only gave up two goals to the Bruins with this pairing on the ice at five-on-five, but it could and should have been a lot worse. Fortunately, the Rangers lack a centre of Bergeron’s calibre, so the hope is that this pairing can get some easier minutes and not face the same exposure risks.

Away from Bergeron’s line, the Senators had success taking advantage of Boston’s lack of depth, but the Rangers unquestionably have more depth up front.

Granted, with the exception of the Fast-Lindberg-Grabner line, none of the Rangers’ combinations really imposed themselves on Montreal.

During the regular season however, the Kreider-Stepan-Zuccarello line was quite successful, but they sputtered in the first round against the Canadiens.

CF% FF% SF% xGF% SCF%
Regular Season 55.04 56.08 58.32 55.17 56.67
Playoffs 43.04 48.15 44.74 39.48 42.86

A lot of media attention is going to focus on the Derick Brassard versus Mika Zibanejad narrative, but this is where the attention should be. For the Senators to have any success, they need the Stepan line’s playoff struggles to continue, so this is probably the trio you want to target and match Erik Karlsson up against.

Of course, this means that the rest of Ottawa’s defensive pairings would have to hold their own and guard against the Rangers’ strength and speed on the wings. Given the mobility and speed of some of the Senators’ defencemen, this is obviously a concern. It isn’t an insurmountable task to overcome, but expect a conservative series where the two teams patiently wait to counterattack and create oddman rushes.

If they can continue to shut down Stepan’s line and Craig Anderson has a bounce back series, I really like Ottawa’s chance to advance to the third round.

Of course, if Henrik Lundqvist stops more than 95-percent of the even strength shots and saves a disproportionate volume of scoring chances, it may not matter.

@6thSens He went from a 72% HD SV% in the regular season to 90% in the playoffs. Even for Hank that's nuts.

The soon-to-be NFL lineman was the lowest rated member of Urban Meyer’s first OSU recruiting class.

When Urban Meyer signed his first recruiting class as the head coach of the Ohio State football team, there were a number of big names that seemed like can’t miss prospects, including Noah Spence, Adolphus Washington, and Michael Thomas, after the latter spent a year at Fork Union Military Academy. There were also a number of moderately heralded recruits that turned into stars, like Cardale Jones, Tyvis Powell, and Joshua Perry.

However, at the bottom of nearly every recruiting service’s rankings of the 2012 Buckeye class was the 983rd rated player in the country, a 6’3, 280 lb. offensive guard from Pickerington, OH named Pat Elflein. The eventual Buckeye great was ranked as the 55th guard in his class, and the 62nd best player to come out of Ohio in 2012.

Following a foot injury that forced him to red-shirt his first year on campus, Elflein played as a reserve in every game of his freshman year, and then started 40 straight games en route to becoming a team captain and one of the most heralded lineman in Ohio State history.

After surprising many by returning to Columbus for a fifth season in 2016, and taking over at center for his recruiting classmate, Jacoby Boren, Elflein is currently being projected to be taken in the early-to-mid second round at this week’s NFL Draft. It is unclear if teams are looking at him to play center or guard, but SBNation’s NFL Draft Editor Dan Kadar believes that he would be a great option for a rebuilding team, perhaps like the Jets at No. 39.

“The Jets probably won’t be competing in 2017 so it’s time to start putting the foundation blocks in for a long-term movement,” Kadar said as part of his mock draft earlier this month, “and Elflein is one of the safest picks in the draft.”

Despite his extensive resumé in Columbus, Elflein did not perform as well at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis as he would have liked, causing some talent evaluators to question his athleticism.

In NFL.com’s prospect overview, Lance Zierlein wrote that, Elflein’s “footwork can be a little labored at times at the center position. (He has) marginal twitch, with short-area reaction time that is just average.”

However, both Zierlein and CBS Sports’ Rob Rang praised Elflein’s toughness and leadership. At the combine, he emphasized his experience playing multiple positions across the offensive line.

“(I) told them I have experience starting at right, left guard and center and that I’m able to play all three, and switch around and be versatile,” he said during the media availability in Indianapolis. “I feel like that’s a good marketing tool for me, and so I just tell them whatever the need is I can do it and do it at a high level.”

The winner of the 2016 Rimington Award, given annually to the outstanding collegiate offensive center, Elflein was also named to 10 first-team All-America lists as a senior. So, as he transitions into the professional phase of his career, Elflein has proven that he is more than comfortable overcoming the odds.

The Buckeyes are continually making an impression out west.

A prospect’s top 5

2018 outside linebacker Adrian Jackson (Denver, CO / Mullen) has made it apparent that he now has a top five, but Ohio State is still at the top with USC. Jackson has been high on the Buckeyes throughout his recruitment. The No. 7 ranked outside linebacker in his class, Jackson has already been to Columbus for a summer camp and the Buckeyes are hoping to get him back on campus sometime this summer.

#OhioState and #USC are still out front but four-star Adrian Jackson lays out a top five https://t.co/1lzIR3se5r pic.twitter.com/KpHpU43sm0

— Adam Gorney (@adamgorney) April 25, 2017

Tony Alford has taken the lead in this recruitment and he has helped put Ohio State in a very good spot. Fending off West Coast powers won’t be easy, but Ohio State’s national brand has proven to be successful on the recruiting trail, especially as of late. The Buckeyes are in on a slew of talented linebackers for 2018 so they will be picky at this position going forward.

A prospect’s commitment

Big news hit the Ohio State recruiting world on Tuesday, as four-star strong-side defensive end Brenton Cox committed to the Buckeyes. Cox let the world know of his plans via Twitter.

Officially committed ⭕ , This is the best thing for me , SO you gotta respect it lol ✊ #GoBucks @OhioStateFB ⭕-H-I-O pic.twitter.com/dpyXnyf6n1

— B R E N T O N (@Brenton_cox) April 26, 2017

A Georgia native, Cox chose Ohio State over in-state Georgia. In the Peach State, Cox comes in as the No. 7 player and the No. 2 SDE in the entire country for the 2018 class.

Ohio State now has eight members in their 2018 class – and it’s beginning to shape up as a rival to the Buckeyes’ star studded 2017 recruiting class. All eight of the commits are ranked in the top 100 nationally, according to 247sports.

In comparison, some programs are lucky to have one or two of the top 100 players in a recruiting class. Michigan’s highest ranked player, according to 247sports, is a four-star offensive guard — who comes in as the No. 95 player in the country. The lowest rated Buckeye commit, at the moment, is ranked No. 86.

We’ll see if the Bucks can keep up the momentum on the recruiting trail, and secure another dominant recruiting class for the ages.

MotS&G Motsag Mock NFL Draft

Motsag Mock NFL Draft
Garth
via our good friends at Men of the Scarlet and Gray
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

Our Jacob Seymour offers up a mock draft that suggests the QB class is not as highly valued as some suggest. This of course reflects the futility of predicting trades.

1. Cleveland Browns: Myles Garret, DL, Texas A&M. Best player in the draft fills a need for the Browns

2. San Francisco 49ers: Marshon Lattimore, DB, Ohio State. Best DB prospect gives the 49ers a place to start rebuilding. Fournette could go here, but the OL is good enough to select a RB at #2

3. Chicago Bears: Malik Hooker, DB, Ohio State. Bears need playmakers in the secondary and they get the best play making safety since Ed Reed.

4. Jacksonville Jaguars: Leonard Fournette, RB, LSU. Blake Bortles needs a run game to help open up the pass game.

5. Tennessee Titans: Mike Williams, WR, Clemson. Best WR prospect, he proved how good he is against OSU and Bama. Mariotta needs a #1 WR.

6. New York Jets: Jamal Adams, DB, LSU. The Jets need talent and Adams is a complete safety. He will allow the Jets to do different things in the back end

7. Los Angeles Chargers: Solomon Thomas, DL, Stanford. Chargers go best player available. Bosa and Thomas will be a scary future for opponents

8. Carolina Panthers: Christian Mccaffery, RB, Stanford. His versatility allows the Panthers to fill the holes they have in the offense.

9. Cincinnati Bengals: Johnathan Allen, DL, Alabama. Rumors of his shoulder injuries is what causes him to drop. With the Bengals talent he is worth the risk.

10. Buffalo Bills: John Ross, WR, Washington. This will be the surprise of the draft. Watkins has proven to be unreliable when it comes to staying healthy. That forces the Bills to try and find another playmaker

11. New Orleans Saints: OJ Howard, TE, Alabama. Howard is a Top 5 talent. Though, it is to hard to justify drafting a TE that high. The Saints offense has shown how hard life has been without Jimmy Graham.

12. Cleveland Browns: Reuben Foster, LB, Alabama. Let’s hope Cleveland does the smart thing for once.

13. Arizona Cardinals: Corey Davis, WR, Central Michigan. A future #! WR in the NFL. The successor at Arizona when Fitzgerald retires.

14. Philadelphia Eagles: Tre’Davious White, DB, LSU. One of the best cover DB’s. In the draft. With Dez and Beckham in your division. You need all the DB help you can get. .

15. Indianapolis Colts: Derek Barnett, DL, Tennessee. The Colts continue to build the team around the defense. Just like Pagano has always wanted.

16. Baltimore Ravens: Gareon Conley, DB, Ohio State. Ravens get a steal here at 16. Conley should be a Top 10 pick. The Ravens have proven to go after guys with character issues (i.e Jimmy Smith).

17. Washington Redskins: Haason Reddick, LB, Temple. The guy is all over the field and will help bring speed to this defense.

18. Tennessee Titans: Charles Harris, DE, Missouri. Tennessee looks to improve the pass rush.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Dalvin Cook, RB, Florida State. Another Top 10 player with character issues. The Bucs lost out on the Adrian Peterson sweepstakes and look to give Winston some help.

20. Denver Broncos: Cam Robinson, OL, Alabama. While he started at Alabama for 3 years on the left side. The right side is where he belongs in the NFL. The Broncos need more help than anyone can imagine on the OL.

21. Detroit Lions: David Nkoku, TE, Miami. Add another surprise in the first round. The Lions personnel has New England ties. We all know how deadly the Pats offense is with 2 TE’s. The Lions look to duplicate that.

22. Miami Dolphins: Forrest Lamp, OL, Western Kentucky. The Dolphins will look to move Tunsil to OT and that opens a spot and a need at OG.

23. New York Giants: Garrett Bolles, OL, Utah. The Giants need to move Flowers over to RT. Bolles has the ability to be a good LT in the NFL.

24. Oakland Raiders: Kevin King, DB, Washington. The Raiders gave up a lot of big plays in the passing game last year. With King’s size and speed. The Raiders look to limit those kind of plays.

25. Houston Texans: Mitch Trubisky, QB, North Carolina. I feel Trubusky is better than any QB on the Texans roster right now. So whatever they get out of him will only increase their playoff chances.

26. Seattle Seahawks: Adoree Jackson, DB, USC. The Seahawks need depth in the secondary. Having Jackson and Lockett would give the Seahawks great flexibility in the return game. This will maybe allow Lockett to focus on his WR skills.

27. Kansas City Chiefs: Patrick Mahomes, QB, Texas Tech. I believe that Mahomes will be the second QB off the board. I feel his skill set is exactly what Andy Reid wants. He has a quick, but funky, release. He is athletic and can make the throws in the West Coast offense.

28. Dallas Cowboys: TJ Watt, LB/DE. Wisconsin. Is Texas big enough to handle 2 Watt brothers?

29. Green Bay Packers: Marlon Humphrey, DB, Alabama. The Packers will take the best DB available,. After last season’s crazy injury bug in the secondary. Would not be surprised if they hold open tryouts just to get bodies back there.

30. Pittsburgh Steelers: DeShone Kizer, QB, Notre Dame. Kizer is Big Ben, but 2 inches shorter. Putting him in a stable environment and culture will help minimize his character issues.

31. Atlanta Falcons: Quincy Wilson, DB, Florida. DB is a deep position this year. After they let the Pats throw wild on them in the Super Bowl the Falcons will add depth in the secondary.

32. New Orleans Saints: Takkarist McKinley, LB, UCLA. The Saints will look to add to their pass rush after going offense with their second pick. In a division with Cam, Ryan, and Winston. You need all the pass rushers you can get.

The Buckeyes add another 2018 standout to the fold.

After picking up pledges from offensive lineman Max Wray and defensive back Josh Proctor, Ohio State’s spring game is still paying off on the recruiting trail.

Weeks since returning back home to Georgia from his visit to the Columbus, OH campus, four-star defensive end Brenton Cox has verbally committed to Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes over Kirby Smart and his home state Georgia Bulldogs. Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, and Miami were among some of the other programs to pursue the peach state standout throughout the process.

With Larry Johnson always looking to bring in fresh bodies on the defensive line, the 6’5, 250-pound Cox will add another dynamic pass rusher to the Buckeyes already stout defense.

Last season as a junior for Stockbridge High School (GA), Cox was a force for the Tigers. Helping his squad finish the season 13-1, he accounted for over 70 total tackles, and a team leading 18 quarterback sacks.

The eighth member of the Buckeyes 2018 recruiting class, Cox is currently considered the second strongside defensive end, and 43rd overall prospect in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

If he hasn’t hired an agent he can still pull his name out, but...

In a stunner, Ohio State junior guard Kam Williams’ name appeared on the NBA’s official list of 2017 NBA Draft early entrants Tuesday evening. Fellow Buckeye junior Trevor Thompson, a sub-7’0 big man, had his name appear as expected on the list as well.

While Thompson’s decision was made publicly available and been known about for some time — it also came as no surprise after he tested the NBA Draft waters before returning to school last year — Williams’ comes completely out of left field. Neither player is projected to be even a late round draft pick, with Thompson expected to play either abroad or in the NBA’s G-League (formerly the “D-League”) next season.

Williams played a career high 30 minutes a game last season, averaging just 9.4 points per game, 2.1 rebounds, and 1 assist per contest. He wasn’t even a full time starter until the second half of this past season.

To say Williams would likely be best served by returning to school for his final year of eligibility in a pure basketball sense is probably an understatement. Assuming he hasn’t hired an agent and pays his own way to workouts, he’s free to. If he has a guarantee to allow himself to play professionally abroad, it might make personal financial sense for him to test the NBA waters before pursuing a career in Europe, Asia, or the Middle East.

We wish Williams the best regardless of what he decides.

With a solid spring game showing, Arnette shows he has the tools to make the jump.

“Ohio State CB Damon Arnette: Whoever emerges in the secondary for the Buckeyes is a good bet to become a star.”

- Brian Bennett, ESPN

The Big Ten conference had plenty of playmakers show what they’re capable of in each player’s respective spring game. Brian Bennett delved into some of the key players this spring that seem ready for a breakout season, starting with Penn State wide receiver Juwan Johnson and then going through the rest of the teams to find a playmaker for each. It was a bit surprising to not see wide receiver Johnnie Dixon selected after his tremendous performance in the spring game, but consider Ohio State has to replace two lockdown cornerbacks, it makes sense that Bennett would choose to go with cornerback Damon Arnette.

Arnette got some limited action last season as a redshirt freshman but performed well enough in the spring that he’s been given the nod at the cornerback position opposite of Denzel Ward. With the amount of raw talent lined up on that spot of the depth chart, Arnette’s rise to the starting spot is impressive and despite the big shoes to fill from Gareon Conley and Marshon Lattimore, appears ready for the challenge this season.

“Once I got healthy I had to show everybody what I could do. I knew what type of athletic ability I have. I had to get out there and show them.”

- Marshon Lattimore via Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

Marshon Lattimore’s journey from growing up to attending Cleveland Glenville, then going to Ohio State to now about to be a high selection in the 2017 NFL draft is nothing short of amazing. You can read his full story with the link above, but just in Columbus alone, Lattimore was sidelined for a couple of seasons with hamstring injuries and didn’t seem like he would reach his full potential because of it. Finally, in 2016, Lattimore was fully healthy and earned the starting cornerback spot opposite of Gareon Conley and the rest is history. Lattimore helped solidify one of the strongest secondaries in the country which propelled the Buckeyes to an appearance in the College Football Playoff.

Now Lattimore is projected to go as high as in the top five picks - which would make him the highest player ever taken from Cleveland Glenville (Donte Whitner went eighth overall in 2006). The Glenville-Ohio State pipeline has certainly played a major part in the Buckeyes success with names like Lattimore, Whitner, Ted Ginn Jr., Troy Smith, and Cardale Jones to name a few. Lattimore could end up being the best of them all if he’s able to carry his success to the NFL.

“Is the man who carried Ohio State's offense last season a receiver or a running back in the NFL?

Yes.”

- Doug Lesmerises, Cleveland.com

There’s been plenty of hype surrounding the top of the NFL draft and a couple of Ohio State defensive backs that are looking to have their names called sooner rather than later. But perhaps one of the more intriguing players from the Buckeyes is do-it-all H-back Curtis Samuel. Samuel was used in many different ways with Ohio State and was without question their most dynamic playmaker last season. He also was the only player in the country to have 700 or more yards both in rushing and receiving and helped make a stagnant Buckeye offense spark. But despite the interest level from NFL teams, it doesn’t seem likely that Samuel will go in the first round.

It doesn’t help his cause that when he ran a blistering 4.31 40-yard dash at the NFL combine, he was overshadowed by the fact that John Ross broke the record with a 4.22 time right before Samuel went up to run his. Still, NFL teams are always in need of players that can both get the ball on handoffs and make plays as a receiver and there aren’t many better in this draft at that skillset than Curtis Samuel.
