The Buckeyes will head to Texas Southern, along with Arizona.

Spring practice is in the books, which means we’re officially in the lull of the offseason. And you know what that means? Satellite camps.

It appears the Buckeyes will be camping in Houston this summer, on the campus of Texas Southern. At least, according to the Texas Southern coaching staff.

— Tom Anthony (@CoachTomAnthony) April 20, 2017

Texas Southern, an FCS school that competes in the SWAC, is located in Houston, prime recruiting territory for Ohio State, a school that has made recruiting in Texas a bigger priority in recent years.

Buckeye 2018 targets like five-star cornerback Anthony Cook and four-star wideout Brennan Eagles, are Houston kids.

The Buckeyes aren’t going to do what Michigan did, and participate in a massive, cross-country camping tour, but they are going to pick their spots. They camped in the Dallas-Fort Worth area last year, along with in Florida, and may participate in other camps near major targets in 2018 and 2019 for this season.

Next year’s schedule is starting to fall into place.

This coming season is going to be a pivotal one for Ohio State basketball. After missing the NCAA Tournament two seasons in a row, the pressure will be on for the Buckeyes to make a move for next year. Now, we’re starting to get an idea for who they’ll need to beat to get back to March.

Per Jon Rothstein, the Buckeyes will host the Tribe of William & Mary next season:

Ohio State will host William & Mary as part of its 2017-18 non-conference schedule, per a source.

— Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) April 17, 2017

The Buckeyes will also face Robert Morris:

Ohio State will host Robert Morris as part of its 2017-18 non-conference schedule, per a source.

— Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) April 6, 2017

William & Mary finished a respectable 17-14 last season, and ended the year ranked No. 133 in KenPom, a few spots ahead of Rutgers. Their final official RPI ranking was even more generous, ending the year at No. 112, one spot behind Nebraska. If the Tribe finishes in that neighborhood again next year, they’ll be a decent addition to Ohio State’s non-conference schedule ... a game the Buckeyes are expected to win, but one that won’t torpedo their computer profile.

The numbers aren’t nearly as high on Robert Morris. They finished 14-19, had a KenPom ranking of No. 266 (behind programs like Seattle, five-win Oregon State, and Cornell), and a final RPI of 240. That’s not very good.

Those won’t be Ohio State’s only non-conference opponents, of course. The Buckeyes will take part in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, and will also be participating in a massive early season tournament, along with squads like Arkansas, Duke, Florida, Gonzaga and Texas. Ohio State will also face North Carolina in New Orleans on December 23, as part of the CBS Sports Classic. Ohio State will not participate in the Gavitt Games next season.

We’ll share more updates on Ohio State’s schedule later this offseason.

The Buckeyes’ 2018 recruiting class is on the right path for another big time commit.

Adams down to five

Coming into to Thursday, Ohio State's recruiting class in 2018 features seven commitments from six different states. Despite North Carolina not being one of those states, the Buckeyes took a positive step into changing that.

On Wednesday, '18 ATH Jordyn Adams, who is listed/graded as a wide receiver on the 247Sports Composite Scale, revealed his list of top schools.

5️⃣ .... no order! pic.twitter.com/lwRQJQL7tb

— J2 (@jordynadams10) April 19, 2017

As you can see, Ohio State did make the cut for the 6-foot-2, 175-pounder from Green Hope High School in Cary, N.C. You can also see the competition the Buckeyes will have to battle in hopes of landing the four-star prospect — Alabama, Clemson, LSU and North Carolina.

While being included in the group for Adams, the 35th overall player at his position and eighth best player in North Carolina, is a positive development in Ohio State's pursuit. According to the 247Sports Crystal Ball, Clemson and UNC are considered the two programs in the best spot for the 173rd highest graded prospect in the class.

With that being said, Adams was on campus just five days ago. For the Scarlet and Gray's sake, they will have to make sure that isn't the last visit Adams makes to Columbus, if they want to have a good shot at landing his eventual pledge.

Change of plans for Cox

On Tuesday afternoon, '18 defensive end Brenton Cox (Stockbridge, GA / Stockbridge) revealed that he would be making his decision this Sunday between Ohio State and Georgia.

However, not even 24 hours later, Cox has decided to back off of the original commitment date. While it won't be on Sunday as he initially had planned, it still won't be a long wait before the Buckeyes and Bulldogs learn their fate with the highly rated four-star standout.

Cox had this to say about the change on Wednesday:

The commitment has been pushed back a few days to make sure the right choice is being made , so it won't be this Sunday

— Jagg (@Brenton_cox) April 19, 2017

For now, Ohio State seems to be in the driver’s seat. The nation’s 56th overall player was on campus this past weekend to check out the Buckeyes’ spring game and all indications are that the visit left a great impression on the 6-foot-4, 247-pounder.

However, Georgia will get the last visit for the third highest ranked strongside defensive end in the class. Cox will be in Athens, Ga. this weekend to check out the Georgia spring game. A few days after, it will be decision time. Can the Buckeyes outlast the dreaded last visit? That is the big question.

Buckeyes hand out two new offers

Sticking to this year’s recruiting class, Ohio State dropped a new offer on Wednesday to '18 tight end Kyle Pitts of Archbishop Wood (PA).

Blessed to receive an offer from THE Ohio State University #Buckeys ⚫⚪pic.twitter.com/00XIBpxyq8

— KyleAnthonyPitts3️⃣ (@ghost_boi4) April 19, 2017

Pitts is currently graded as a three-star prospect but he does hold offers from the likes of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma, Penn State, Tennessee, UCLA and Virginia Tech.

The other to receive an offer from the Buckeyes yesterday was '19 ATH Ronnie Hickman of DePaul Catholic (NJ).

Dreams really do come true! Beyond blessed and extremely thankful to receive and offer from The Ohio State University. #GoBucks ⭕pic.twitter.com/khHx0PMo4S

— Ronnie Hickman (@asvprocket_) April 19, 2017

The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder, who is primarily being recruited by Greg Schiano, was on campus for the spring game last weekend. Interestingly enough, all six predictions on the 247Sports Crystal Ball are in favor of Ohio State.

Other schools that have sent early offers to Hickman include Boston College, Maryland, Michigan, Penn State, Rutgers and Wisconsin.

The Buckeyes were outplayed in an 8-1 loss to the Norse.

Ohio State baseball kicked off a nine-game homestand on Wednesday night at Bill Davis Stadium, though kicked off may be the wrong term. The team’s 8-1 loss to Northern Kentucky more closely resembled a blocked punt.

The Buckeyes, who managed just six hits on the night, have lost three midweek games in a row and five of their last six overall. For the year, the club is now 15-22, and answers to their struggles remain as elusive as ever.

On an evening devoid of many positives, freshman Dominic Canzone continued his recent hot performance at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. He has now hit in three straight games after having his team-high ten-game streak ended last week.

Fellow freshman Jake Vance made his second start of the season, and it wasn’t one he’s likely to remember fondly. In 2.2 innings, the right-hander gave up five runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out two, and took the loss. Vance was one of eight pitchers head coach Greg Beals used on the night.

For Northern Kentucky, Trey Ganns pulled double duty, starting on the mound and hitting cleanup. The junior lefty homered, doubled twice, scored twice, and drove in four runs at the dish, while also tossing five innings of one-run ball to earn the win.

NKU was excellent with two outs, going 8-for-17 as a team in such situations, scoring six runs.

The Norse jumped out to the early lead thanks to that two-out hitting in the first against Vance. Will Haueter started the rally with a seeing-eye single through the left side of the infield, then Ganns roped a double to right-center, and Haueter raced all the way around to score. After Vance walked a batter, Dominic Mercurio shot a single to right to score Ganns and make it 2-0.

Ohio State cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second. Canzone doubled to lead things off and was bunted over to third by Jacob Barnwell. Zach Ratcliff followed with a run-scoring groundout. But it was the last time the team would threaten to score.

Ganns got that run back for himself in the top of the third, demolishing a pitch to dead-center for the solo homer. Mercurio would follow later in the inning with a solo shot of his own, stretching the lead out to 4-1.

Northern Kentucky wasn’t done, either. Kyle Colletta and Brendan Alas knocked back-to-back doubles to put another one on the board and subsequently chase Vance from the game. Curtiss Irving relieved and recorded the final out of the inning.

Things remained that way until the sixth, when the Norse tacked on another run. Kyle Michalik, the Buckeyes’ fourth pitcher of the game, gave up an infield single to start and was abruptly pulled in favor of Joe Stoll. T.J. Alas was the first batter Stoll faced, and he doubled in the runner to make it a five-run advantage.

In the eighth, Ganns did his final bit of damage, as Northern Kentucky again got things going with two outs. Against Buckeye right-hander Ryan Feltner, he laced a double down the left field line that brought two more runs home to reach the game’s final score.

The scarlet and gray will now prepare for a three-game weekend set with UNC-Greensboro in Columbus. First pitch in the lidlifter is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. ET on Friday evening, and the game will be streaming live on BTN Plus.

It’s a talented class, and yet the conversation leading up to the draft largely remains about the two Bucks.

“Conley is a really intriguing player to me. I like him better than Lattimore as a prospect.”

- Greg Cosell, via Tim McManus, ESPN

SB Nation’s compilation of mock drafts show that Marcus Lattimore is mocked earlier than Gareon Conley is most projections. Lattimore is the most mocked player to the No. 3 and No. 5 teams in the Bears and Titans respectively. But Greg Cosell told McManus that he likes Conley more than Lattimore as an NFL player. Cosell told McManus that Lattimore is more of "an athlete than a football player at this point, and now it comes down to coaching."

Cosell also likes the “level of experience and versatility” that Conley brings. “He would fit [the Eagles] because he can play outside and in the slot,” he told McManus. “Ohio State played a lot of press man, he's played that. Good-sized kid. Conley is a good prospect.” No matter who gets picked first, we’ll all be rooting on the soon-to-be former Buckeyes in the NFL.

“Lattimore and Conley visited the Jets on Tuesday, and both could make sense with the No. 6 pick for the team that is searching for solutions to fix a leaky secondary.”

- Brian Costello, New York Post

The New York Jets could really use any type of help they could get. Some mock drafts have them taking a quarterback, with North Carolina’s Mitchell Trubisky being the played most mocked to them at No. 6 overall. Marshon Lattimore and Gareon Conley have also been up there, along with Malik Hooker.

For the Jets, they’d prefer to get a cornerback, and one of the talented Ohio State players could be that answer. The Jets struck out on picking Dee Milliner back in the day, so for one of the Bucks to be selected would come with some great pressure in the biggest market in the United States. Lattimore and Conley both visited the Jets on Tuesday, and could possibly join former teammate Darron Lee with gang green.

“[Louis Riddick] said that Jamal Adams could do everything Hooker does if asked to play that role, but the reverse is not true.”

- David Fucillo, Niners Nation

The NFL Draft brings out plenty of projections and opinions. ESPN’s Louis Riddick — when comparing the two best safeties in the draft — said that Jamal Adams could do whatever Malik Hooker does. He then added that you couldn’t say the same about Hooker with regards to what Adams does.

Hooker didn’t appreciate it, and laughed it out on Twitter.

Oh Okay https://t.co/FDdAHfZEXZ

— Malik Hooker (@MalikHooker24) April 19, 2017

Another top safety, Budda Baker, came to provide support for Hooker, and wanted him to ignore Riddick’s criticism. Hooker has been mocked to the 49ers in mock drafts at No. 2 overall, and if you’d ask us, the 49ers would be getting a phenomenal player.

“Most draft observers believe [Curtis] Samuel is likely to be selected by a team on Day 2 and as early as the second round.”

- Rob Phillips, DallasCowboys.com

Though he was Ohio State’s biggest playmaker in the 2016 season on offense, Curtis Samuel’s name has flown under the radar leading up to the 2017 NFL Draft. Samuel had 97 carries for 771 yards with 8 touchdowns and 74 catches for 865 yards and 7 touchdowns as the only player in the country with at least 700 yards receiving and rushing.

The Cowboys are set at running back with Ezekiel Elliott, but Samuel would be a versatile player that the Cowboys could use in multiple ways. He can be a running back, play in the slot, and is a physical player. Not to mention it would be pretty neat to see him playing alongside his former teammate in Zeke.

What we learned about Ohio State’s offense during the spring game

usa_today_10013455.0.jpg

It looks like new offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson knows what he’s doing.

When looking back during Urban Meyer’s tenure, the offense has been borderline unstoppable at times, but it’s also been severely exploited against legitimate defenses in his few losses at Ohio State. If one thinks back to the Buckeyes’ biggest offensive explosions against good defenses (2014 Wisconsin, 2014 Michigan State, 2015 Oregon, etc.) it has been the vertical passing game that stands out at the major difference between then and what has transpired on the field in the prior two seasons. With Ed Warinner out and Kevin Wilson in at offensive coordinator, it’s safe to say that the quarterbacks and receivers have already made strides in the vertical passing game.

See how the new-look offense was able to combine for 654 passing yards and seven touchdowns through the air during Saturday’s spring game:

Quarterbacks

J.T. Barrett

Per usual, J.T. Barrett was criticized on social media from Buckeye fans. But in fact, he will be your starter in 2017 and will succeed in this offense. Kevin Wilson is looking to attack the middle of the field on short stuff, while testing the perimeter with the deep ball. If you take away the interception (where he most likely would have scrambled due to pressure), Barrett made sound decisions and took what was given to him.

Barrett made a couple of nice throws that he wouldn’t have made last season (the Campbell reception if you scroll down) and he has guys like Benjamin Victor, Terry McLaurin, Parris Campbell, K.J. Hill and Johnnie Dixon who have taken substantial steps forward since last season. Wilson is going to design plays to make things easier for both Barrett (screen game, quick stuff to the middle of the field) and the receivers. Barrett does have the tendency to be inconsistent at times due to random lapses in his mechanics, but overall he played a solid game and was able to spread the ball around to a variety of receivers — including the tight ends.

Repeat after me: J.T. Barrett is not in a quarterback competition and he will be the starter for the 2017 season.

Joe Burrow

As of now, Joe Burrow looks like the safest of the two backups to be next in line this season behind Barrett. He has game experience — albeit in mop-up duty last season — and consistently makes the solid, safe play.

Below, Burrow looked like a veteran by looking off the safety, then lofting a pass into Johnnie Dixon’s arms for six.

As you’ll see below, Haskins was impressive, but it should surprise no one if Burrow gets his name called if Barrett goes down.

Haskins

From a pure production and “wow” factor, Dwayne Haskins stole the show at quarterback. He displayed elite arm strength, plus-accuracy and proper decision making. Although Burrow may be the safer option to manage a game in the case of a Barrett injury, Haskins possesses the higher and more talented upside. The ball flies off of his hand on intermediate throws and he has consistent touch and accuracy on deep throws.

This is a big time throw from Dwayne Haskins (@dh_simba7) from the far hash to the outside of the numbers. pic.twitter.com/mJZ5BAC5lh

— Christopher Jason (@cjason112) April 18, 2017

On this throw below, Haskins put enough air on the ball where only Dixon could make a play on the ball, lofting it right over the defensive back’s head.

Haskins made multiple plays throughout this game and even if Burrow starts off the season as Barrett’s backup, he possesses more upside for next year’s grueling quarterback competition.

Running backs

Mike Weber, Demario McCall, J.K. Dobbins

With Mike Weber obviously running with the first-team, there was little to be seen with him since he was playing a game of two-hand touch. That left us to learn more about Demario McCall and J.K. Dobbins, who look like the clear backups at tailback behind Weber.

With Dobbins receiving the most praise during the spring when he jumped over Antonio Williams on the depth chart, it was McCall who stood out during the spring game. McCall has the extra gear that Dobbins doesn’t possess and he looks like the perfect change-of-pace back. But if it were up to me, McCall needs more touches and should be on the field more — possibly in the H-back role.

His speed flashed last season as a true freshman in mop-up duty, and it looks like he has added muscle onto his frame, which has made him even more dangerous and well-rounded as a playmaker. All in all, Demario McCall looked like the most dynamic skill player on the field during the spring game and Kevin Wilson needs to find a way to get him 10-plus touches per game.

On the other hand, Dobbins looked like a true freshman playing in his first “game” at the collegiate level. He’s bigger than expected and showed flashes, but it looks like he jumped Antonio Williams based more on the lack of what Williams brings to the table, rather than Dobbins truly stealing the job.

His “welcome to college football” wake-up call came in pass protection, where he was rocked back into Haskins by a blitzing linebacker, resulting in a pressure and a throwaway. Expect Dobbins to play McCall’s true freshman role, where he gets valuable reps during mop-up duty.

H-Backs

Parris Campbell, K.J. Hill, Eric Glover-Williams

All three of these players looked the part on Saturday, but this looks like the clear pecking order. All three possess the ability to catch the ball, carry the ball and make plays with the football in their hands. The most glaring change — and something Buckeye fans have been begging for the past two seasons — has been Kevin Wilson’s implementation of the wide receiver screen game, where Barrett and the receivers will be able to take advantage of soft coverage or a 2v1 on the perimeter. Barrett will likely be able to quickly check to the screen if he sees off-coverage or a numbers advantage. With Ohio State’s athleticism on the perimeter, their inability to create separation on the outside, and the offensive line’s inconsistency last season, it’s mind boggling that there was zero resemblance of a screen game until now.

Campbell, Hill and Glover-Williams all showed the ability to make plays out of the slot, and Wilson used their speed to create separation. He used them on crossing patterns, shallow crossers, quick outs and banana (a rounded off corner route) routes to utilize their speed to get them open, rather than have them run precise routes out of the slot. If the spring game showed us anything, these guys (especially Campbell) will be extremely busy under Wilson.

Wide receivers

X: Binjimen Victor, Austin Mack

Z: Terry McLaurin, Johnnie Dixon

As mentioned, Kevin Wilson was brought to Ohio State to fix the inconsistent (and bad at times) passing game, and through the spring it looks like it’s going in the right direction. We told you above how Wilson is helping the H-backs (slot WR) and designing plays to get them open, but it also looks like they’re going to go more vertical on the perimeter.

Victor was targeted early in the end zone on a fade route, and he was targeted a few times after that on the same route. It’s clear they want to utilize his blend of size and speed to win contested balls — something that no receiver was able to do, besides Noah Brown versus Oklahoma, last season. Victor has clearly made significant strides in the weight room and no longer looks like a lanky young receiver anymore. Although it looks like he may be rotating with Mack at times, Victor should get the majority of the snaps and should be the starter at the X.

Now, the most exciting part of the afternoon was the emergence of the oft-injured Johnnie Dixon. Dixon will likely start out the season behind Terry McLaurin, but if Dixon is able to stay on the field and continue to perform at this level, there is no reason why he shouldn’t be able to split time or even take the majority of the snaps from McLaurin. We mentioned Dixon as a “player to watch” and he checked off just about every box during the spring game.

It wasn’t just his team-leading receiving yards or his two touchdowns on five receptions, it was his ability to gain separation off the line of scrimmage, show top-end speed, quickly come out of breaks and accelerate. Coming out of high school, Dixon was Meyer’s most polished outside receiver that he recruited at that time, but has been unable to shake off the injury bug. With Dixon feeling “the best he’s felt in a long time,” it’s apparent that this is the truth and not just lip service.

Dixon had a couple of nice vertical routes, but his most impressive moment of the day came on a 7-yard hitch where he came back to the football, accelerate out of the break and turn up-field for a solid gain.

The emergence and health of Johnnie Dixon could be the difference between a good receiving corps and a very good or great receiving core. Kevin Wilson is going to want to air it out, and it looks like J.T. Barrett may have a full arsenal of capable weapons in 2017.
