The baseball Bucks showed some guts, coming back for a 5-4 win over the Spartans.

Ohio State baseball got beat up in its first two games of the weekend by UNC Greensboro. So it says something about the character of the team that the Buckeyes fought back again and again on Sunday to claim a 5-4 victory and avoid being swept.

On three separate occasions in the ballgame, Ohio State found itself trailing the Spartans. And in every case, found a way to scratch out some runs. The Buckeyes’ perseverance was a welcome sight after a tough past month of the season.

A leadoff double by Brady Cherry in the eighth inning gave Ohio State a chance to break a 4-4 tie, and after advancing to third on a groundout, the Buckeye sophomore sprinted home to score the game-winner on a wild pitch.

Ohio State was in position to grab the win thanks to a tremendous performance out of the bullpen by junior Seth Kinker. The side-armer threw six innings of one-run ball, scattering seven hits and striking out five in earning his second win of the season.

Senior co-captain Jalen Washington broke out of a recent slump with a 2-for-3 day, doubling, driving in a run, and scoring a pair. Tre’ Gantt added a 2-for-4 day, getting a double of his own, scoring a run, and driving one in.

Freshman Dominic Canzone also extended his recent hitting streak to six games, going 1-for-2 with an RBI, while fellow frosh Connor Pohl had a pair of hits of his own.

Ohio State handed the ball to junior Reece Calvert, who was fresh off the finest performance of his career in scarlet and gray. Last Sunday against Michigan State, the righty yielded just two hits in 5.1 innings, retiring 15 in a row at one point. In this one, Calvert had a much shorter outing, going just three innings, but he kept the Buckeyes in the game, allowing three runs and departing with the score tied.

The loss went reliever Andrew Wantz, who gave a pair of runs in his 2.2 innings of work.

Right-hander Dan Loats got the start for UNCG, and had more trouble holding the scarlet and gray bats down than did his teammates Bryce Hensley and Matt Frisbee. In 5.1 innings, Loats allowed three runs on five hits, walking a pair and striking out six, but left the game with the lead.

Right out of the box in the first inning, Greensboro asserted itself offensively. Three straight one-out singles loaded the bases and Cesar Trejo sent a sacrifice fly to center field to give his team a 1-0 lead. Calvert was able to escape without further damage, but it was clear from the outset that UNCG was hungry for the sweep.

In the home half of the frame, though, the Buckeyes came right back to tie things up. Washington singled and Canzone walked. The pair orchestrated a double steal on a swinging strike three by Cherry, and catcher JoJo Underwood’s throw to third was wild, allowing Washington to trot home and make it a 1-1 ballgame.

Things wouldn’t stay knotted for long, as Greensboro reclaimed the lead in the top of the third. A pair of one-out singles and two stolen bases put two runners in scoring position. Michael Goss then grounded out to plate Caleb Webster.

Calvert looked to be out of trouble when Trejo sent a grounder to Cherry at third, but the throw across the diamond was in the dirt and first baseman Bo Coolen couldn’t pick it, allowing Andrew Moritz to score and give the Spartans a two-run advantage at 3-1.

Once again, Ohio State answered UNCG’s scoring in the club’s next trip to the plate. Gantt and Washington doubled back-to-back with one down in the bottom of the third, cutting the deficit to one. Washington would then steal third and come home to tie the game up once more on a Canzone sacrifice fly.

Kinker took the mound in the top of the fourth and recorded two quick outs. But a double by Underwood and a single by Ben Spitznagel gave the lead right back to Greensboro.

The game stayed 4-3 for the next few innings, but the Buckeyes had their chances. In the fifth, they stranded a runner in scoring position, and in the sixth, after singles by Canzone and Coolen, a double play ball ended an excellent chance to pull back to even.

They finally cashed in against Wantz in the bottom of the seventh. Pohl doubled to lead things off, moved to third on a fielder’s choice, then came home to tie the game for the third time on an RBI single back up the middle by Gantt.

The performance from Kinker kept Ohio State within striking distance, which they did with Cherry’s mad dash in the bottom of the eighth.

The Buckeyes do not have a midweek game this week, so their next time on the field will be Friday evening, when a three-game weekend series with Nebraska gets underway.

LGHL Mike Weber and a closer look at Urban Meyer’s running backs track record

Mike Weber and a closer look at Urban Meyer’s running backs track record

Can Meyer strike dominance gold a third time in Columbus?

Mike Weber had a good, but not elite season in 2016. But can he take the next step in 2017 and become a dominant running back like Elliott and Hyde before him?

Described as a “bruising” runner reminiscent of Carlos Hyde, Urban Meyer said last season that Weber is “... a thumper and a plus-yardage guy most of the time. Zeke was too, but he doesn't have the top end that Zeke has. We're working on that. And Carlos was a great back. We have been fortunate, and I think Mike falls right in that category. Mike has great feet, great power, and that's why I compare him a little bit closer to Carlos Hyde.”

The problem was that Weber wasn’t always used as a “thumper” last season. It seemed like he would occasionally be forgotten about, as J.T. Barrett seemed to get the ball just as often on third-and-short.

So what were his strengths and weaknesses relative to other Ohio State running backs under Urban Meyer and what can we expect his development to be like as a redshirt sophomore?

Some quick observations from the data:

  • Ohio State’s four starting running backs over the last four years — Weber, Elliott, and Hyde — averaged 224 pounds and 3.14 pounds per inch (to the extent we can trust the official Ohio State roster’s information).

Last season, as a redshirt freshman, Mike Weber weighed 212 and 3.03 pounds per inch — putting him at roughly the same size as Elliott in 2013, when he backed up Carlos Hyde.

Will we see a bigger Mike Weber who can handle increased carries in 2017? It’s worth remembering (for both Weber and J.K. Dobbins) that many didn’t expect Zeke to get as big as he did -- he certainly seemed closer to Jordan Hall than Carlos Hyde when he first got on campus.

  • Ohio State backup running backs weighed 199 pounds and 2.81 pounds per inch on average, which is roughly 25 pounds less than the starting running back. Two of those backs — Curtis Samuel and Demario McCall — were really H-Back-sized, while Elliott’s 2013 season was the only year where the second-string running back was a true running back.

Meyer’s running backs at Florida tended towards that size too — i.e., Jeff Demps and Chris Rainey. In fact, the Florida blog OurTwoBits (formerly Bourbon Meyer), argued back in 2012 that, “be cautious about how excited you get about any running back that Urban recruits and signs.

Urbs won a lot of games with Florida using the running back as a tool, but either never used the tailback as a feature in the offense or never recruited a 20+ carry per game guy.” That’s obviously changed in Meyer’s Ohio State offenses.

  • Highlight yards per opportunity, which captures a running back’s explosiveness, clearly shows how special Elliott was. Especially during the 2014 season, where he averaged over a whole highlight yard more per opportunity than Weber did last season. But Weber falls squarely in the middle between Hyde and Elliott in the respective final seasons when it comes to explosiveness.
  • Carlos Hyde’s insane opportunity rate in 2013 distorts the data here, but it’s clear that Weber was less efficient on a per-carry basis than either Hyde or Elliott were. The offensive line had a lower team opportunity rate than either the 2014 or 2013 seasons, but Weber was still less efficient when you compare his opportunity rate to the team’s overall opportunity rate (-5.1% compared to -2.4% for Zeke in 2015, -3% in 2014, and +1.5% for Hyde in 2013).
  • So the picture you have of Weber is that he is somewhere between Elliott and Hyde in terms of explosiveness, but less efficient than either.
  • While it seemed like Weber wasn’t often used on third downs last season, he averaged a solid 4.14 yards per carry on third and three or less last season. Elliott averaged 5.77 ypc in similar situations in 2015, but just 2.53 in 2014. And Hyde averaged 2.86 ypc in 2013. It is true however that J.T. Barrett was used just as often in short yardage situations as Weber — both had 22 carries on third and three or less (Barrett averaged 3.65 ypc to Weber’s 4.14).
  • Both Curtis Samuel and Ezekiel Elliott had incredible efficiency and explosiveness as young players. After their roles increased as upperclassmen (Samuel received about 5 times the number of carries last season), their efficiency and explosiveness either improved (for Samuel) or stayed about the same (Elliott actually declined in opportunity rate from 2013) — all that changed was how many carries they received.

The lesson here is obvious -- the best predictor of future success is just making the most of limited opportunities when players are young. Does that mean bad things for Demario McCall, whose performance last season was the worst of the group in both opportunity rate and highlight yards per opportunity? I don’t think so, especially given his size last year relative to the other players (he was about 35 pounds lighter than the other backs). This also suggests that we should pay attention to J.K. Dobbins’ stats this season, even if he only gets 25 carries in garbage time.

Ultimately, if Weber can improve his efficiency over last year, then he should settle into a role somewhere between Hyde (low explosiveness, high efficiency) and Elliott (excellent at both). I think most Ohio State fans would be just fine with that outcome.

With the win, the Buckeyes earn a berth in the Big Ten lacrosse tournament in Columbus.

The No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes men’s lacrosse team mounted a glorious comeback against the second-ranked Maryland Terrapins Saturday, earning an 11-10 win in overtime in Columbus and taking over the top-spot in the Big Ten standings.

This season, Maryland has been dominant in conference, boasting a 3-0 record before entering Saturday’s matchup. Previously, Ohio State had held just a 1-6 overall record versus the Terrapins, including a 10-8 loss in College Park last season.

With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 12-2 on the season, including 3-1 in conference play, and are in prime position to earn a No. 1-seed in the Big Ten conference tournament, scheduled for the first week of May.

The Buckeyes got off to a slow start to the afternoon behind some sloppy play in the first half. While Ohio State tied things up early on a goal by senior midfielder J.T. Blubaugh after an early score by Maryland, the Terrapins would score three unanswered goals to close the opening quarter, limiting Ohio State to just two shots in the first quarter.

Though Maryland dominated early on in the second quarter, scoring the first two goals to complete a 5-0 run, the Buckeyes would slow things down on a score by senior attackman Eric Fannell. Maryland would answer, maintaining the Terps’ five-goal lead, but Fannell would respond with his second goal of the game to narrow the margin. Another goal by senior midfielder John Kelly closed the gap to 7-4 in favor of Maryland at the half.

Ohio State truly found their groove after the break, as Fannell scored his third and fourth goals of the game to narrow the Terps’ lead to one. Another third quarter goal by freshman defenseman Jeff Henrick tied things up before fifth-year senior attackman Tyler Pfister found the back of the net, giving the Buckeyes their first lead of the game with 1:06 remaining in the third.

Maryland added a goal to open the final quarter, tying things up 8-8 with 10:16 remaining in the game. The Buckeyes would score the next two on goals by Fannell and senior midfielder Johnny Pearson, but the Terps answered with two goals of their own to close the quarter with a 10-all stalemate.

In typical fashion, senior specialist Jake Withers won the opening faceoff of the four-minute overtime period, After an initial shot by Fannell and groundball recovery by Pearson, Pearson found the back of the net for his second goal of the day to win the game.

Despite a sluggish start, the Ohio State defense truly kicked into gear in the second half, holding the Terps scoreless for more than a quarter as the Buckeye attack went on a 6-0 run.

Fannell led the team with five goals on the day, followed by Pearson’s two-goal performance. In all, six Buckeyes scored against the Terps, though the team totalled just four assists on the day.

After a slow start, senior goalie Tom Carey finished the day with 10 saves on 20 shots on goal. Maryland had six saves on 17 shots on goal. Overall shots were 32-28 in favor of the Terps.

Withers, last week’s Big Ten Specialist of the Week, won 18-of-25 faceoffs, staying consistent with Ohio State’s No. 3 rank in the NCAA in faceoff wins. Withers also led the team in groundballs, picking up 10 of the Buckeyes’ 35.

Next up, the Buckeyes face No. 13 Rutgers in New Jersey before moving on to the conference tournament.

The Buckeyes dropped game two of their series with UNCG by a score of 11-4.

Familiar themes were on display for Ohio State baseball on Saturday afternoon in a 11-4 loss to UNC-Greensboro at Bill Davis Stadium in Columbus. The Buckeyes pitchers got knocked around, the defense made costly mistakes, and the offense couldn’t get anything going until it was way too late as the club lost its sixth weekend series in seven attempts.

Ohio State has now lost three games in a row and seven out of eight, its record for the season sinking to 4-11 at home and 15-24 overall.

Scarlet and gray batters collected eight hits in the ballgame (though six of those came when the team was already losing by 10) and struck out nine times.

Freshman Connor Pohl had a pair of doubles and a run batted in, while fellow frosh Dominic Canzone extended his hitting streak to five games. Sophomore Andrew Fishel also had a multi-hit effort.

Sophomore Connor Curlis took the loss, though he was let down early by his defense. In 4.1 innings, the lefty allowed eight runs. Two of them were unearned thanks to three errors behind him. Curlis, now 2-2 on the year, walked one and struck out four.

His counterpart for the Spartans, right-hander Matt Frisbee, had smooth sailing with the exception of one rough inning. He went 8.1 innings, yielding four runs on eight hits, while issuing four free passes and punching out nine in improving to 6-2.

The Buckeyes actually appeared to take an early lead after a Tre’ Gantt walk and a ball ripped down the left field line by Brady Cherry. Home plate umpire James Muhleck called the ball foul, though, which seemed to defy reality. Head coach Greg Beals argued vehemently with Muhleck, but his pleas went for naught.

Defensive miscues have been an issue for Ohio State all season, and in the second inning they led to a crooked number for UNCG. Curlis walked the leadoff man, which is never what a pitcher wants to do. The next three Spartan batters reached base, in part due to a pair of errors by second baseman Pohl and one by Gantt in center. When the dust had settled, the score was 3-0.

To the Buckeyes credit, they rebounded to answer with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame. After Jacob Barnwell was hit by a pitch, Pohl found a little redemption for his mishaps in the field, sending a double to left-center to get his team on the board.

The opportunity for more was staring Ohio State in the face after Shea Murray walked and Fishel singled to load the bases. But Frisbee struck out Jalen Washington and got an easy popup off the bat of Gantt to escape the jam.

That would come back to bite the Buckeyes in the top of the third, as Greensboro added to its lead. Cesar Trejo led the inning off with a double and was sacrificed to third. He trotted home to make it a 4-1 ballgame on a single by Austin Embler.

In the fourth, two more Spartan runs would cross the plate. Ryne Sigmon and Ben Spitznagel started the inning with back-to-back singles, and both moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. An RBI groundout by Caleb Webster and a run-scoring single by Michael Goss pushed the advantage out to 6-1.

Meanwhile, Frisbee started to settle in. He retired 12 in a row at one point, needing just ten pitches to retire the side in the third, seven in the fourth, and six in the fifth.

UNCG’s onslaught continued in the fifth, and Curlis was chased from the game. The first two batters of the inning singled, and a sacrifice bunt moved them both into scoring position. At that point, Beals went to Curtiss Irving out of the bullpen. The right-hander’s first pitched was lashed down the right field line by Sigmon for a two-run double, making it a seven-run lead.

The Spartans put three more on the board in the sixth thanks to a run-scoring groundout by Trejo, an RBI double by Tripp Shelton, and an RBI groundout by Ryan Clinch. Irving faced a total of seven batters, allowing three runs on three hits and a walk while recording just three outs. Lefty Joe Stoll replaced him to record the final out of the inning with Ohio State trailing 11-1.

Stoll set Greensboro down 1-2-3 in the seventh, the first time it had happened all game. A pair of walks and a Gantt RBI single in the home half of the inning brought in Ohio State’s second run of the game.

Frisbee couldn’t quite cap things off in the ninth, allowing a double to Pohl, a single to Fishel, and an RBI double to Washington before being pulled. Brandon Stephens relieved him, yielding a sacrifice fly to Gantt before retiring Cherry on a groundout to end the game.

Game three of the series is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. ET on Sunday. Ohio State will send junior righty Reece Calvert to the mound looking to avoid the sweep.

PANIC — Or don’t.

Watching Ohio State’s spring game, you got the sense that despite the 7-on-7-ish format and the piles of meaningless offensive yards, the Buckeyes have a ton of talent and are again the odds-on favorite to win the Big Ten and compete for the playoff.

Bruce Feldman couldn’t argue with putting the Buckeyes on top of the preseason projections. ESPN’s opaque FPI has Ohio State number one. And Bill’s S&P+ has Ohio State second, behind only Alabama. And this is likely Meyer’s most talented team he’s had at Ohio State, based on 247’s Composite total team talent.

Based on the statistical projections, feedback from reporters who watched spring practice, and evidence from the Student Appreciation Day and spring game (whatever insight you can get from that), there aren’t any obvious reasons why Ohio State shouldn’t again contend for the national championship.

So I tried as hard as I could to find potential problem spots for Ohio State next season.

No go-to receivers

By my count, nine receivers caught a ball in the spring game and Ohio State quarterback threw for a combined 654 yards — but what if no receivers separate themselves from the pack?

Curtis Samuel was the most explosive skill player as well as the most dependable receiving target. His target rate (24.5%) was just a little less than the next two players combined — Noah Brown and Marcus Baugh. But eight different receivers had more than ten catches last year, and if Curtis Samuel wasn’t getting open, then the passing game fell apart.

Outside of Samuel, the receivers were interchangeable. There was no explosive option like Devin Smith, with his ridiculous yard-per-catch average. Or a dependable receiver who had both a high catch rate and a high target rate. Behind Samuel, the next two targeted pass catchers had catch rates below 62%.

So the concern is essentially if we get a repeat of last year — but now minus Ohio State’s top three pass catchers. And as others have mentioned this off season, why should we feel optimistic about a group of receivers who failed to make an impact last year, when there were ample opportunities for someone to emerge?

Further, it’s difficult to gauge too much on the spring game. For every Malik Hooker or Jerome Baker spring game performance that actually translates to success in the fall, there is another Taurian Washington performance that doesn’t.

The receiver everyone talked about during spring and bowl practice was Binjimen Victor. As Feldman writes,

The most intriguing upstart guy is Binjimen Victor, a 6’4 former blue-chip wideout from Florida who should help remedy a big issue for the Buckeyes offense: hitting downfield pass plays...“His ball skills are a 10. He’s a great kid,” Meyer said. “He’s struggles in some areas with releases and getting off bump coverage. But he’s gonna be exceptional.”

But his impact was limited in the spring game, as he was held to three catches for 31 yards despite multiple attempts to get him the ball. I absolutely don’t think one performance — let along in a spring game! — means much, but it does illustrate the concern over whether a dependable intermediate and deep threat will emerge.

What if Kevin Wilson doesn’t mesh with Urban Meyer’s offense?

The Kevin Wilson hire was nearly universally lauded as one of, if not the, best coordinator hires of the offseason. According to Feldman again, “A few [coaches for other schools] gushed about how big of a hire Meyer made by adding former Indiana head coach Kevin Wilson as his new offensive coordinator. ‘He’s one of the smartest guys I’ve ever coached with,’ said Pitt head man Pat Narduzzi. ‘He’s just understands the game at a different level. I think it’s a great hire for Urban.’”

But is there any chance that it doesn’t actually work out?

Ian Boyd similarly praises Wilson’s on-field coaching ability, but is one of the few to point out that it may not be a seamless integration for Wilson and Meyer’s offensive philosophies:

The Ohio State run game has been geared around inside zone and power blocking. Wilson tended to build his Indiana units around outside zone, which works rather differently and doesn’t feature the same kinds of QB option complements. While Wilson might emphasize balanced formations and the pass, it’s unlikely Meyer would stop combining inside zone and power, particularly the QB read varieties with Barrett entering his final season...While Wilson is used to calling plays at tempo and distributing widely, how will he do so with the zone/power-read schemes that have defined Ohio State?
What if the offensive line fails to improve?

Generally cohesiveness and returning starters are incredibly important for developing a dominant offensive line. That’s why the offensive line isn’t seen as a major point of concern entering the summer — the line has four returning starters.

But that’s also a little bit of a concern when that group (minus Pat Elflein) was 82nd in adjusted sack rate last season. As Bill Landis wrote following the Fiesta Bowl and freshman Michael Jordan’s injury, “Buckeyes' coach Urban Meyer said earlier this week that true freshmen starting on the offensive line at a place like Ohio State shouldn't happen.”

Now the Buckeyes have to decide between Matt Burrell and Jordan’s Fiesta Bowl replacement, Demetrius Knox, for the new starting guard spot. Despite little turnover, there’s no guarantee that the replacement guard will equal either Jordan or Billy Price. And even if they do, can the unit improve in pass protection from last season?

Looking ahead

Obviously the biggest concern for the offense is whether the passing game — between the quarterback, the playcalling, the offensive line, and the receivers — can improve. It’s needed to for two straight springs. And while there are ample reasons for optimism (which we’ll get to later on), there are a few offseason concerns, too.

The Buckeyes have lost six of seven after a 11-4 defeat by the Spartans.

Ohio State baseball’s season of disappointment continued on Friday night at Bill Davis Stadium in Columbus. The Buckeyes were beaten 11-4 by UNC-Greensboro, their sixth loss in the last seven games.

The club saw its record at home fall to 4-10, and now sits 15-23 overall.

The up and down season of right-hander Yianni Pavlopoulos continued. The redshirt junior couldn’t keep the Spartans bats in check, allowing 10 runs, eight earned, on 13 hits in five innings of work, walking four and striking out just one. Pavlopoulos is now 2-5 on the year.

Ohio State’s offense couldn’t keep pace with the UNCG attack, though to the team’s credit, it didn’t roll over after falling behind big in the early going. Freshman Dominic Canzone continued to be a bright spot, extending his hitting streak to four games with a 2-for-4 night at the plate, scoring a run and driving on in. Junior Tre’ Gantt also had a solid performance, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and run scored of his own, and classmate Bo Coolen collected a pair of hits and picked up an RBI as well.

Greensboro was successful hitting with men on base, going 10-for-22 for the game in those situations, and 7-for-14 with runners in scoring position, which ultimately made the difference on the scoreboard.

UNCG starter Bryce Hensley had his difficulties just as Pavlopoulos did. The lefty tossed 4.2 innings, yielding four runs on six hits while walking two and striking out six. A sudden loss of the strike zone in the fifth inning made for a shorter outing than Hensley is accustomed to.

Pavlopoulos got through the first inning and the first two outs of the second with little difficulty, but Greensboro got a rally going to plate a pair before he could finish the second frame. A single, a walk, and an error by second baseman Noah West led to the first run, while an RBI single by Ben Spitznagel brought in the second.

The Spartans would double their lead in the third, again with two-out offense. After Jacob Barnwell threw out his eighth runner of the season, Pavlopoulos walked Cesar Trejo. Tripp Shelton followed that with a two-run bomb to right field, making it a 4-0 ballgame.

Greensboro tacked on another pair of runs in the fourth, as Pavlopoulos lost his command. He walked the first two batters of the inning on eight pitches, and a sacrifice bunt attempt ended up going for a bunt single to load the bases with nobody out. An RBI single by Andrew Moritz and a squeeze bunt by Michael Goss got the fifth and sixth runs of the game on the scoreboard.

The Buckeyes broke through against Hensley in the fourth with a little two-out hitting of their own. Canzone collected an infield single and stole second, and one batter later with two away Coolen lined a single to right-center to trim the lead to 6-1.

But Pavlopoulos just couldn’t hold the Spartans down in the fifth. A two-out Ryne Sigmon single scored Austin Embler who had doubled down the right field line earlier in the inning, his third hit of the game.

Hensley briefly lost his command in the bottom half of the fifth, walking Shea Murray and West to lead things off. After Jalen Washington hit into a fielder’s choice to put runners at the corners, Gantt delivered an RBI single to score Murray and make it a 7-2 deficit. Washington would later come home thanks to a wild pitch and a Canzone single drove in Gantt to cut the lead to three.

Had Pavlopoulos been able to put a zero on the board in the sixth, perhaps the momentum could have carried over for Ohio State. But a single, an infield single, and a bunt single loaded the bases with nobody out, and brought head coach Greg Beals out of the dugout to make a pitching change.

Reliever Austin Woodby got a fly ball to center off the bat Goss, a sacrifice fly that scored Spitznagel. Gantt made an errant throw on the play, though, which allowed Caleb Webster to score as well, pushing the lead out to 9-4. Three straight singles after that resulted in two more runs, giving UNCG an 11-4 advantage.

Woodby did manage to throw the first 1-2-3 inning of the game in the top of the seventh, but in the home half, Washington, Gantt, and Brady Cherry were set down on just five pitches by Spartans’ reliever Jack Maynard.

Maynard yielded just four hits over 4.1 scoreless innings of relief, putting away the victory for UNCG and earning his third win of the season.

Game two of the series is scheduled for Saturday afternoon, with a 3:05 p.m. ET first pitch. The game will be streaming live on BTN Plus as Connor Curlis faces off against Matt Frisbee.
