Kent State Golden Flashes (official thread)

He was a god awful hire from day 1 who had no business getting a head coaching gig.

Interested to see what direction they take it....do they follow the trendy former player with no experience route and go with Josh Cribbs, who has already made it clear he'd be interested, hire a re-tread or large program coordinator who has no other hopes, or go another route like and go into their backyard and hire Geoff Dart from Mount Union. Younger guy, late 30's, 5 years as a head coach, has those relationships locally already, etc.

Either way, they'll probably screw it up.

2030 FIFA World Cup

2030 World Cup: CONMEBOL proposes expanded 64-team tournament

i

Alejandro Domínguez, the president of South American soccer's ruling body CONMEBOL, made an official proposal on Thursday to expand the men's 2030 World Cup from 32 teams to 64.

FIFA is aware of the proposal that was first introduced in March by a delegate from Uruguay during an online meeting of the ruling council of world soccer's governing body.

"We are convinced that the centennial celebration will be unique because 100 years are celebrated only once," Domínguez said during his opening speech at CONMEBOL's 80th Ordinary Congress.

The 2030 World Cup is already set to be the most sprawling edition with six host nations spread across three continents.

Uruguay was the original World Cup host in 1930 and is scheduled to stage one game. Paraguay, Argentina, Spain, Portugal and Morocco are also co-hosts.

If FIFA approves the move, it would create a tournament of 128 matches, double the number of the 64-game format that was played from 1998 through 2022.

However, UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin has called a 64-team World Cup "a bad idea."

Critics of the 64-team proposal have argued it will weaken the quality of play and devalue the qualifying program in most continents.

Bowling Green Falcons (Official Thread)

Buckeye legend Eddie George welcomes a Harbaugh to Bowling Green

The rivalry between Michigan and Ohio State runs so deep that it almost feels unnatural to see a Wolverine and a Buckeye exchanging pleasantries. But that was the case last week as Ohio State legend Eddie George (now the head coach at Bowling Green) welcomed Jack Harbaugh to take in a Falcons practice. Although many of the Maize and Blue faithful recognize Jack as a Michigan Man, his college playing and coaching career has plenty of roots in the state of Ohio.

As a player, Jack was a halfback at Bowling Green from 1957-60. Following his playing days, he became an assistant coach at various high schools throughout Ohio before joining the staff at Bowling Green as an assistant in 1968. Given that history, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that George recently welcomed Harbaugh to campus with open arms.

Eddie better be careful, I'm pretty sure new NCAA bylaws are being written that state if you come within 60 feet of a Harbrau it's LOIC.

LB Tarvos "TJ" Alford (Official Thread)

Better Know a Buckeye: Tarvos Alford Models His Game After Ryan Shazer And Hopes to Make Same Impact at Ohio State As the Former Buckeye Great

155708_h.jpg

Immediate Impact

With Sonny Styles leading the linebacker room and Arvell Reese likely taking the other starting spot on the depth chart in 2025, playing time could be hard to come by for Alford in his first season as a Buckeye.

That said, he has one thing on his mind early on in Columbus: Get his black stripe off and find a way to get in the rotation if at all possible.

“I really want to get my black stripe off and get myself in that rotation early and go out there and make plays,” Alford said this spring.

Although C.J. Hicks moved to the edge, Alford is competing with Garrett Stover and fellow freshman Riley Pettijohn, among others, for a spot on the two-deep alongside Payton Pierce. With so much competition early on, he knows that the talent around him will only improve himself as a player.

“Really playing around a lot of great players,” Alford said of what excites him the most about playing for the Buckeyes. “We’ve already got the best 2025 class right now. There’s plenty of players that’ll be around me that can help make me better.”

Long-Term Impact

Laurinaitis has always seen Alford as a Will linebacker at the college level and beyond, so Alford perfecting that position – both on and off the field – as a freshman will be key for his success, both short and long-term.

With Styles entering his final season at Ohio State, Alford can push for significant playing time in his second season in Columbus in 2026. The competition to do so will continue to be tough, especially as Laurinaitis continues to bring in the top talent from across the country every year, but Alford's ability to chase down opposing ball carriers, speed to cut down angles, and athleticism to drop back in coverage is the type of skill set that is tough to teach.

In the running game, Alford pairs his pre-snap reads and instincts with his speed and sure-tackling ability to make big hits on ball carriers. He uses his speed and athleticism to be a standout linebacker in coverage as well, giving him the skills to be a future every-down player on Ohio State’s defense.

Look for Alford to make it on the two-deep at Will linebacker as a sophomore and fight for a starting spot alongside Pettijohn in his third season as a Buckeye in 2027.

A new way to crown the National Champion

What if, instead of crowning a national champion every year, we determine the current champion of college football by a title that is passed on from team to team. When you beat the current title holder, you become the title holder.

The first champion was the winner of the first game ever, Rutgers over Princeton, 6-4.

11/06/1869 Rutgers
...
11/24/2017 Pittsburgh

Edit: Updated 11/30/2017
Assuming this is accurate, I'll take it from here:

9/8/2018 Penn State
9/29/2018 Ohio State
10/20/2018 Purdue
10/27/2018 Sparty
11/10/2018 Ohio State
12/28/2019 Clemson
1/13/2020 LSU
9/26/2020 Mississippi State
10/3/2020 Arkansas
10/10/2020 Auburn
10/17/2020 South Carolina
10/24/2020 LSU
10/31/2020 Auburn
11/28/2020 Alabama
10/9/2021 Texas A&M
11/13/2021 Ole Miss
1/1/2022 Baylor
9/10/2022 BYU
9/17/2022 Oregon
11/12/2022 Washington
1/8/2024 Cheaters
9/7/2024 Texas
10/19/2024 Georgia
11/9/2024 Ole Miss
11/23/2024 Florida

And it appears Florida hasn't lost the title, yet.

2024-2025 College Basketball General Discussion

IU was probably the most disappointing team in the B1G, considering the rumors they paid out over $10 million for that team last year, going over the top to get everyone they wanted in the transfer portal. Paying all that money, getting the cream of the crop in the portal, being expected to be a contender in the B1G and still missing the big dance is a disaster. That shouldn't overshadow the poor job Steve Pikiell did at Rutgers. If you look at the latest mock drafts, two of the top-3 players in some of them are Rutgers freshmen Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey. How bad of a coach are you if you have two of the top-3 talents in college basketball, a preseason top-25 type team, and you're 11th in the B1G? You have to say Steve Pikiell is inept at building a roster, to have two excellent players and a complete inability to mold a competent cast around them, and he's been at Rutgers since 2016, so he's had plenty of time to learn about the B1G and the level of players you need in order to win.

Livvy Dunne puts tomatoes in her gumbo (LSU gymnastics official thread)

Olivia Dunne Fights in Court After Losing Millions in 5 Years With NCAA Housing Settlement Case

February 2025. Olivia Dunne penned a letter to the U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken. Her concerns? The $2.8 billion NCAA house settlement had issues. Multiple issues. It lacks transparency. Distributes money inequitably. Excludes athletes from the decision-making process. And now, about 2 months from that, she finds herself fighting in court. Directly this time. What happened? Well, the NCAA house settlement is nearing its final leg, and Dunne is not giving up without a fight!

Olivia Dunne has been running the NIL space for quite some time now. Since 2021, the year when the NCAA adopted the new NIL rules, she has amassed millions through endorsements. Currently ranked #4 in the top 100 NIL athletes, she has about 13.5M followers and an ON3 NIL roster estimated value of $ 4.1 M. Thus, when she spoke up on this issue, it held weight. She is the present example of an athlete who doesn’t come from the football/basketball domains but from an Olympic sport and still has managed to make a mark in the NIL space. Thus, when it came to fighting for what she represents, Livvy didn’t back down.

As per Forbes, Monday, April 7, Olivia Dunne appeared before Judge Claudia Wilken of the U.S. District Court to formally object to the $2.8B NCAA house settlement case. Among the four athletes who testified, Livy appeared on a Zoom video call and called herself a “Division 1 athlete, a businesswoman, and I’ve been the highest-earning female athlete since the NIL rules changed.” However, she went on to oppose that the settlement does not take into account her true value and potential earning power. She even alleged that she had sacrificed in her earnings.

In fact, Livvy even opposed the back pay offered by the settlement. And her argument was? “My value existed before NIL was legal. I don’t need to guess what I might have earned, I know. I had a growing platform and millions of followers before I ever stepped foot onto a college campus,” Dunne said. She even described that, before the NIL rules came into effect, she had already committed to LSU in 2017. During COVID, her fame skyrocketed and thus, till she came to college, she was already a rising star with millions of followers.

New York Mets (2x World Series Champions)

Wow that’s awful.

I was in DR about 10 years ago and went to a club. It was crazy packed in there and would’ve definitely been fire marshalled in the U.S. because there were way too many people in it.

Sad to hear that happened but honestly surprised we don’t hear it happen more often given how things are down there/

Academic Honors for Buckeye football players

A program-record 95 Ohio State football players were named Ohio State Scholar-Athletes for having a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better. 805 total athletes across the Ohio State athletic department earned Scholar-Athlete honors for the 2024-25 academic year.

Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork believes the Buckeyes’ athletic and academic success go hand in hand.

“If you're doing one thing in your life at the highest level, you're going to do everything else at the highest level,” Bjork told Eleven Warriors. “No one's going to take a day off. No one's going to take a shortcut. So if you just look at our football team, look at our women's hockey team; women's hockey has led the department in cumulative team GPA, and we've been in six out of the last seven Frozen Fours, won two out of the last four national championships. Football had the highest GPA (in program history) last spring, last fall, they're on track this spring to have a really great GPA, and we just won the national championship. So again, correlation between excellence in one category – academic, social life, whatever – is going to bleed over into the athletic realm.”
