CBS Sportsline College Football Playoffs

Cool 11W (nostalgic) article on the CFP ideas back in 1975.

Remember When: College Football Playoff System Idea Rejected By Woody Hayes and Others in 1975

A College Football Playoff-type system was proposed more than 50 years ago, before it debuted in the 2014 season.

Although the CFP has only been in place for 11 years, debuting as a four-team playoff in 2014 before increasing to 12 teams this past season, discussions of a playoff system were first discussed in 1975.
Fifty years ago, some called for a college football playoff system to decide the national champion, but Woody Hayes, among others, was against the idea.

From the Jan. 2, 1975 issue of The Lantern:

While many Ohio State students interviewed had mixed reviews about the voting system compared to a BCS system, compared to a playoff system to decide a national champion, Hayes thought a playoff system would hurt other bowl games.

"A playoff for the national championship would hurt the bowl games. And that's not good, because many teams wouldn't normally get anywhere or go in the bowl games.

"The national championship is won right there on the football field during the bowl games. It was won in the last two minutes in the Rose Bowl by John McKay and his team. That's the way it should be."

According to Marvin Homan, the publicity director of the athletics department, it would have led to the college football season being too long.

"The NFL is not really comparable to the structure of college football. There are only 28 NFL teams while there are 126 college teams. For colleges to copy that idea isn't very wise.

"Besides, those men play football for a living. They aren't going to school. Many athletic administrations wouldn't be in favor of prolonging the season. This would be too much overemphasis on football."

Google AI: The College Football Playoff's new television deal, a six-year, $7.8 billion contract with ESPN, will generate $1.3 billion annually. This revenue is distributed to participating conferences and schools, with the Big Ten and SEC receiving the largest shares. Specifically, schools from these conferences will receive approximately $21 million each. The ACC and Big 12 will receive roughly $13 million and $12 million, respectively.

Just sayin': The attitudes about a CFP has rurally changed over the decades; needless to say, the driving force of change has been the money. Lots of money.

Jake Diebler (Head Coach)

Why Bruce Thornton is Jake Diebler's lifeline for the Ohio State basketball team

The best player for the Ohio State basketball team is tied to Jake Diebler's future.

The Ohio State basketball program continues to search for ways to get out of the hole it's been in for the last three years. In each of those three seasons, the Buckeyes have failed to reach the NCAA Tournament. It looked like they were going to break that awful streak last season, but collapsed down the stretch.

There are some Buckeye fans who are already out on Jake Diebler ( I don't count myself among those people...yet) even though he is just approaching his second full season as a head coach. He made a lot of mistakes last year, but he should have learned from them in the offseason.

Diebler is going to face some pressure from fans who never wanted him hired in the first place. A segment of the fan base wanted the Ohio State Buckeyes to make an outside hire. Instead, they promoted from within. Diebler has one guy who can help him get those fans to change their minds.

Jake Diebler needs Bruce Thornton to carry the Ohio State basketball team to the NCAA Tournament

Bruce Thornton has been the best player the Buckeyes have had in each of the last two seasons. He is back and should be better than ever. He's the only guy that Ohio State can rely on to create some offense with any regularity. Thornton is the key to the team's success.

Tim Walton Working with Davison Igbinosun to Master Fundamentals As Ohio State Cornerback Looks to Reduce Penalties in Senior Season

“I want to improve on the penalties,” Igbinosun told ESPN when explaining his decision to stay at Ohio State for another year. “I had too many, I want to clean that up.”

Fortunately for Igbinosun, he has the benefit of another year to learn from one of college football’s top secondary coaches, Tim Walton – who knows what it takes to succeed at the highest level as a former NFL secondary coach. And even though it’s been a lingering issue for two years, Walton believes Igbinosun’s penalty issues remain entirely correctable.

“Anything in life is correctable if you put the work in,” Walton said this spring. “You work on it, it’ll improve, and it’ll keep getting better. Football has a lot going on – you got splits, you got body size, you got field position, so you got different calls that puts you in those different positions, so you got to be able to plow all of that and know how it works so when you're at the top of the route, you're not in a bad position that makes you have to reach around.”

While refraining from grabbing opposing receivers is the obvious answer to how Igbinosun can reduce penalties, Walton believes it all starts with having proper footwork.

“Just moving his feet. Just feet drills, just moving his feet so you don't reach at the top,” Walton said when asked what he’s working on with Igbinosun to cut down on penalties. “Your eyes, feet, hands slide at the top so if you get your feet in the right position early in the down, that puts you in a better position at the top of the route so you don't have to reach as much.”

Buckeye Spelling Bee: Test Your Spelling Skills On Ohio State’s Famous and Most Difficult Names

156358_h.jpg

Put on your thinking caps and grab your favorite drink, it’s time for a special edition of Ohio State trivia.

Last night, Faizan Zaki won the 2025 Scripps Howard Spelling Bee by correctly spelling “éclaircissement.” You know, the word of French origin you use daily that means to clear up something obscure. In honor of the kids who will never need to use their computer's spell checker, it's time to test your ability to spell the names of former Ohio State players.

There are two simple rules: Please use your brain (not a search engine) and only play once. If you need more éclaircissement, don't cheat.

Here's the first one:

The Buckeye pictured above is the only player in college football history to win the Heisman Trophy twice. How do you spell his name?
  • Archie Griffon
  • Archie Griffith

Just sayin': 60%, I can't spell worth shit, how did you do?

Game Thread Ohio at tOSU, Sat. Sept. 13th, 7 ET on Peacock

Every other streaming service I have tried has worked well for me in terms of data integrity, buffering and latency. Peacock has been utter trash. Combine that with the fact that I have become borderline ambivalent about this sport, I’m just going to find other things to do when the game is on Peacock. Shoot, I might find something better to do when it’s not.
Peacock for me is OK when I’m watching it stream live. But when I want to rewind it for 10 or 15 seconds to watch something again, the rewind and fast forward features are abysmal; it’s so hard to get it to move only a few seconds, it zips back a couple of minutes as soon as it goes into rewind mode. That just drives me nuts, with all other streaming services it’s easy to move backward and forward in small chunks of time.

Game Thread Grambling State at tOSU, Sat. Sept. 6th, 3:30 ET on BTN

Best part of this contest will be the Battle of the Bands. Anyone who has watched 'Drumline' will know what I mean. Will be a great test for the precision of TBDBITL. Hope Grambling can keep up.
The bands will put on a good show, but I don't see how they can compete; they aren't the same thing at all. HBCU bands and military style bands are both bands perform on a football field, but that is about the only thing they have in common. A good friend of mine in Florida played in the FAMU band and had no interest whatsoever in military style bands. It was like asking a huge opera fan to listen to Hank Williams Sr.
