Last movie you saw?

The Spirit of '76

A Reiner-Coppola production sounds like the ultimate Hollywood tag-team, right? Well, not when it's director Lucas Reiner (son of Carl, brother of Rob) and screenwriter Roman Coppola (son of Francis Ford, brother of Sofia). In this forgotten (and largely forgettable) movie, David Cassidy (Partridge Family), Olivia d'Abo (Wonder Years), and some clown named Geoff Hoyle (yes, he really is a professional clown) are sent back in time from 2176 to 1776 in order to find the original Constitution, the contents of which have been lost over the centuries, so that democracy can be saved. There's only two problems: (1) the Constitution wasn't drafted until 1787 (ratified in 1789); and (2) the time machine doesn't work properly so the three intrepid adventurers are sent back to 1976. Upon "landing" somewhere in Southern California, our time travelers meet a pair of dimwit teenagers (brothers Jeffrey and Steven McDonald of the punk-pop band Redd Kross) who guide them on a nostalgia trip through mid-Seventies kitsch culture and protect them from nemesis Eddie Trojan (Leif Garrett, Cassidy's real-life teen idol rival). Many cameos and bit parts including Tommy Chong, Moon Unit Zappa, the members of DEVO, the Kipper Kids, Iron Eyes Cody, Julie Brown (West Coast not Downtown), Don Novello (aka Father Guido Sarducci), and (predictably) Carl and Rob Reiner (Rob steals the show as an est-like self-help guru). It's all good stupid fun, but the best thing about the movie is probably the theme song, 1976 (by Redd Kross, of course). Rating: 7.5 if you want to re-live the 1970s for an hour-and-a-half, 5.0 otherwise.

So how did a pair of relatively unknown rockers land leading roles in this movie? Well, the McDonald brothers were photogenic, they were afficionados of Seventies trash, and they had some previous acting experience (albeit in the "homemade" movies Desperate Teenage Lovedolls and Lovedolls Superstar). It probably also helped that Steven was dating set director Sofia Coppola (she appears "naked" on RK's Third Eye album). But don't feel sorry for Jeffrey – he had a long-term relationship with Bangle Vickie Peterson (they appear together in a 1986 MTV Rock Against Drugs PSA) before marrying Go-Go Charlotte Caffey.

2027 NJ TE JT Geraci (Verbal Offer)

“Coach (Keenan) Bailey serves the role as tight ends coach and co-OC so really knows how to get the tight ends involved,” Geraci said. “He is a coach that loves his job and puts everything into developing players. When I visited in the spring he went through film with me and gave me drills to work on and improve. I worked on those drills every week and when I came to OSU camp in the summer he put us through the same drills which helped me stand out even though there were higher ranked tight ends there. That’s when OSU offered me.
“I really like the coaches there. They are top-notch. Coach (Brian) Hartline and Bailey came to watch us practice at Bosco. Really enjoyed meeting with coach (Ryan) Day after they offered me. He really likes what Bosco produces and knows our program really well. Coach (Wendy) Laurent is the OSU assistant tight end coach and was my older brothers tight end coach at Dartmouth. So, a good family connection. My dad’s family is from Cincinnati area so it’s great seeing them whenever we visit OSU.
After reading these quotes, I'd be mildly surprised if 2027 TE JT Geraci didn't end up signing with OSU, assuming his spot doesn't get taken.

Space Exploration

There was a former OSU aviation engineering Professor Gerald Gregorek. He designed and later led the Aeronautical and Astronomical Research Laboratory next to Don Scott Field. He lived in Clinton Estates and his son attended Brookhaven High School. The son was a polymath, skipping many grades and he and his father hosted "star parties" at his house. Sadly, the son had leukemia and graduated posthumously, having already finished senior year classwork by mid-year.

I remember him because those moments with 6", 8" and 10" refractor telescopes, as well as, a much larger experimental telescope Prof G was building really set a fire in me. He showed us how to read a star chart, fix a telescope in place, find objects in the sky and set the tracking mechanism (primitive compared to today), even how to grind telescope lenses to make our own telescopes. He also was a pioneer in the model rocketry industry and we watched as he sent them aloft many afternoons.

Dr Gregorek, as we called him, also was a great Buckeye football fan. (Obituary)

When I came to the tip of Africa, it was the stars that anchored me. as I watched the Big Dipper peak above the horizon in the American late summer. I knew it was a different and much better show I was seeing and thought of how much fun it might have been to share it with him.

I mention these things because that family deserves mention and remembering, but also to express my appreciation for those who post in this thread. I remember those folks and the kids I grew up with every time I click my way in. Thank you!

Airport annoyances

So, not an annoyance. I’ve been traveling more for work lately and we have a Delta hub. Decided I would splurge and get the Am Express for my travel expenses and access to the Delta Sky Clubs.

Really enjoying the Sky Clubs especially on days when I have early morning or Sunday flights. Makes the airport experience much nicer.
We have the same but with Citi for American. Everyone in my family has access to the Admiral’s Cub when they travel as they all hold a card. So completely worth it. Have had it for years and wish that I would have gotten it, or similar, many years before I did.
