LB Na'il Diggs (Official Thread)

Butler's role scaled back

Inside linebacker Donald Butler has been removed from much of the team's nickel package, yielding to veteran Na'il Diggs in those situations. Chargers coaches believe that less responsibility will help the young player become more effective.

"It takes some pressure off of Donald from an information standpoint," defensive coordinator Greg Manusky said. "It's a good little balance between Butler and Diggs, and I think it works well for both players."

Na?il Diggs is getting comfortable. Donald Butler is allowed to focus. Larry English is letting loose.

The Chargers linebackers are working in concert separately, getting in a groove by assuming a role.

Diggs, in his 12th NFL season and with his fourth team, has rarely seen anything like it.

?As long as you?ve got coaches who are willing to do that ? exploit players? talents ? you?ve got a chance to win,? said Diggs, who joined the Chargers on Sept. 3. ?I?ve seen very talented guys, for whatever reason, not get an opportunity to get on the field. These coaches are using guys.

?I like it. I feel like I?m in a position to make plays, the way I?m being utilized, not just out there to take up space. Linebacker is the hardest position on defense ... We all have special talents. You don?t have to be an every-down guy.?

Diggs? participation has increased each of the three weeks he?s been active. The past two weeks, his playing third down has allowed Donald Butler to focus on running downs. Butler has 14 tackles in the past two games.
