MotS&G Motsag Mock NFL Draft

Motsag Mock NFL Draft
Garth
via our good friends at Men of the Scarlet and Gray
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

Our Jacob Seymour offers up a mock draft that suggests the QB class is not as highly valued as some suggest. This of course reflects the futility of predicting trades.

1. Cleveland Browns: Myles Garret, DL, Texas A&M. Best player in the draft fills a need for the Browns

2. San Francisco 49ers: Marshon Lattimore, DB, Ohio State. Best DB prospect gives the 49ers a place to start rebuilding. Fournette could go here, but the OL is good enough to select a RB at #2

3. Chicago Bears: Malik Hooker, DB, Ohio State. Bears need playmakers in the secondary and they get the best play making safety since Ed Reed.

4. Jacksonville Jaguars: Leonard Fournette, RB, LSU. Blake Bortles needs a run game to help open up the pass game.

5. Tennessee Titans: Mike Williams, WR, Clemson. Best WR prospect, he proved how good he is against OSU and Bama. Mariotta needs a #1 WR.

6. New York Jets: Jamal Adams, DB, LSU. The Jets need talent and Adams is a complete safety. He will allow the Jets to do different things in the back end

7. Los Angeles Chargers: Solomon Thomas, DL, Stanford. Chargers go best player available. Bosa and Thomas will be a scary future for opponents

8. Carolina Panthers: Christian Mccaffery, RB, Stanford. His versatility allows the Panthers to fill the holes they have in the offense.

9. Cincinnati Bengals: Johnathan Allen, DL, Alabama. Rumors of his shoulder injuries is what causes him to drop. With the Bengals talent he is worth the risk.

10. Buffalo Bills: John Ross, WR, Washington. This will be the surprise of the draft. Watkins has proven to be unreliable when it comes to staying healthy. That forces the Bills to try and find another playmaker

11. New Orleans Saints: OJ Howard, TE, Alabama. Howard is a Top 5 talent. Though, it is to hard to justify drafting a TE that high. The Saints offense has shown how hard life has been without Jimmy Graham.

12. Cleveland Browns: Reuben Foster, LB, Alabama. Let’s hope Cleveland does the smart thing for once.

13. Arizona Cardinals: Corey Davis, WR, Central Michigan. A future #! WR in the NFL. The successor at Arizona when Fitzgerald retires.

14. Philadelphia Eagles: Tre’Davious White, DB, LSU. One of the best cover DB’s. In the draft. With Dez and Beckham in your division. You need all the DB help you can get. .

15. Indianapolis Colts: Derek Barnett, DL, Tennessee. The Colts continue to build the team around the defense. Just like Pagano has always wanted.

16. Baltimore Ravens: Gareon Conley, DB, Ohio State. Ravens get a steal here at 16. Conley should be a Top 10 pick. The Ravens have proven to go after guys with character issues (i.e Jimmy Smith).

17. Washington Redskins: Haason Reddick, LB, Temple. The guy is all over the field and will help bring speed to this defense.

18. Tennessee Titans: Charles Harris, DE, Missouri. Tennessee looks to improve the pass rush.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Dalvin Cook, RB, Florida State. Another Top 10 player with character issues. The Bucs lost out on the Adrian Peterson sweepstakes and look to give Winston some help.

20. Denver Broncos: Cam Robinson, OL, Alabama. While he started at Alabama for 3 years on the left side. The right side is where he belongs in the NFL. The Broncos need more help than anyone can imagine on the OL.

21. Detroit Lions: David Nkoku, TE, Miami. Add another surprise in the first round. The Lions personnel has New England ties. We all know how deadly the Pats offense is with 2 TE’s. The Lions look to duplicate that.

22. Miami Dolphins: Forrest Lamp, OL, Western Kentucky. The Dolphins will look to move Tunsil to OT and that opens a spot and a need at OG.

23. New York Giants: Garrett Bolles, OL, Utah. The Giants need to move Flowers over to RT. Bolles has the ability to be a good LT in the NFL.

24. Oakland Raiders: Kevin King, DB, Washington. The Raiders gave up a lot of big plays in the passing game last year. With King’s size and speed. The Raiders look to limit those kind of plays.

25. Houston Texans: Mitch Trubisky, QB, North Carolina. I feel Trubusky is better than any QB on the Texans roster right now. So whatever they get out of him will only increase their playoff chances.

26. Seattle Seahawks: Adoree Jackson, DB, USC. The Seahawks need depth in the secondary. Having Jackson and Lockett would give the Seahawks great flexibility in the return game. This will maybe allow Lockett to focus on his WR skills.

27. Kansas City Chiefs: Patrick Mahomes, QB, Texas Tech. I believe that Mahomes will be the second QB off the board. I feel his skill set is exactly what Andy Reid wants. He has a quick, but funky, release. He is athletic and can make the throws in the West Coast offense.

28. Dallas Cowboys: TJ Watt, LB/DE. Wisconsin. Is Texas big enough to handle 2 Watt brothers?

29. Green Bay Packers: Marlon Humphrey, DB, Alabama. The Packers will take the best DB available,. After last season’s crazy injury bug in the secondary. Would not be surprised if they hold open tryouts just to get bodies back there.

30. Pittsburgh Steelers: DeShone Kizer, QB, Notre Dame. Kizer is Big Ben, but 2 inches shorter. Putting him in a stable environment and culture will help minimize his character issues.

31. Atlanta Falcons: Quincy Wilson, DB, Florida. DB is a deep position this year. After they let the Pats throw wild on them in the Super Bowl the Falcons will add depth in the secondary.

32. New Orleans Saints: Takkarist McKinley, LB, UCLA. The Saints will look to add to their pass rush after going offense with their second pick. In a division with Cam, Ryan, and Winston. You need all the pass rushers you can get.

The Buckeyes add another 2018 standout to the fold.

After picking up pledges from offensive lineman Max Wray and defensive back Josh Proctor, Ohio State’s spring game is still paying off on the recruiting trail.

Weeks since returning back home to Georgia from his visit to the Columbus, OH campus, four-star defensive end Brenton Cox has verbally committed to Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes over Kirby Smart and his home state Georgia Bulldogs. Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, and Miami were among some of the other programs to pursue the peach state standout throughout the process.

With Larry Johnson always looking to bring in fresh bodies on the defensive line, the 6’5, 250-pound Cox will add another dynamic pass rusher to the Buckeyes already stout defense.

Last season as a junior for Stockbridge High School (GA), Cox was a force for the Tigers. Helping his squad finish the season 13-1, he accounted for over 70 total tackles, and a team leading 18 quarterback sacks.

The eighth member of the Buckeyes 2018 recruiting class, Cox is currently considered the second strongside defensive end, and 43rd overall prospect in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

If he hasn’t hired an agent he can still pull his name out, but...

In a stunner, Ohio State junior guard Kam Williams’ name appeared on the NBA’s official list of 2017 NBA Draft early entrants Tuesday evening. Fellow Buckeye junior Trevor Thompson, a sub-7’0 big man, had his name appear as expected on the list as well.

While Thompson’s decision was made publicly available and been known about for some time — it also came as no surprise after he tested the NBA Draft waters before returning to school last year — Williams’ comes completely out of left field. Neither player is projected to be even a late round draft pick, with Thompson expected to play either abroad or in the NBA’s G-League (formerly the “D-League”) next season.

Williams played a career high 30 minutes a game last season, averaging just 9.4 points per game, 2.1 rebounds, and 1 assist per contest. He wasn’t even a full time starter until the second half of this past season.

To say Williams would likely be best served by returning to school for his final year of eligibility in a pure basketball sense is probably an understatement. Assuming he hasn’t hired an agent and pays his own way to workouts, he’s free to. If he has a guarantee to allow himself to play professionally abroad, it might make personal financial sense for him to test the NBA waters before pursuing a career in Europe, Asia, or the Middle East.

We wish Williams the best regardless of what he decides.

LGHL Ohio State’s Damon Arnette could become next star at cornerback

Ohio State’s Damon Arnette could become next star at cornerback
Ian Cuevas

usa_today_9548009.0.jpg

With a solid spring game showing, Arnette shows he has the tools to make the jump.

“Ohio State CB Damon Arnette: Whoever emerges in the secondary for the Buckeyes is a good bet to become a star.”

- Brian Bennett, ESPN

The Big Ten conference had plenty of playmakers show what they’re capable of in each player’s respective spring game. Brian Bennett delved into some of the key players this spring that seem ready for a breakout season, starting with Penn State wide receiver Juwan Johnson and then going through the rest of the teams to find a playmaker for each. It was a bit surprising to not see wide receiver Johnnie Dixon selected after his tremendous performance in the spring game, but consider Ohio State has to replace two lockdown cornerbacks, it makes sense that Bennett would choose to go with cornerback Damon Arnette.

Arnette got some limited action last season as a redshirt freshman but performed well enough in the spring that he’s been given the nod at the cornerback position opposite of Denzel Ward. With the amount of raw talent lined up on that spot of the depth chart, Arnette’s rise to the starting spot is impressive and despite the big shoes to fill from Gareon Conley and Marshon Lattimore, appears ready for the challenge this season.

“Once I got healthy I had to show everybody what I could do. I knew what type of athletic ability I have. I had to get out there and show them.”

- Marshon Lattimore via Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

Marshon Lattimore’s journey from growing up to attending Cleveland Glenville, then going to Ohio State to now about to be a high selection in the 2017 NFL draft is nothing short of amazing. You can read his full story with the link above, but just in Columbus alone, Lattimore was sidelined for a couple of seasons with hamstring injuries and didn’t seem like he would reach his full potential because of it. Finally, in 2016, Lattimore was fully healthy and earned the starting cornerback spot opposite of Gareon Conley and the rest is history. Lattimore helped solidify one of the strongest secondaries in the country which propelled the Buckeyes to an appearance in the College Football Playoff.

Now Lattimore is projected to go as high as in the top five picks - which would make him the highest player ever taken from Cleveland Glenville (Donte Whitner went eighth overall in 2006). The Glenville-Ohio State pipeline has certainly played a major part in the Buckeyes success with names like Lattimore, Whitner, Ted Ginn Jr., Troy Smith, and Cardale Jones to name a few. Lattimore could end up being the best of them all if he’s able to carry his success to the NFL.

“Is the man who carried Ohio State's offense last season a receiver or a running back in the NFL?

Yes.”

- Doug Lesmerises, Cleveland.com

There’s been plenty of hype surrounding the top of the NFL draft and a couple of Ohio State defensive backs that are looking to have their names called sooner rather than later. But perhaps one of the more intriguing players from the Buckeyes is do-it-all H-back Curtis Samuel. Samuel was used in many different ways with Ohio State and was without question their most dynamic playmaker last season. He also was the only player in the country to have 700 or more yards both in rushing and receiving and helped make a stagnant Buckeye offense spark. But despite the interest level from NFL teams, it doesn’t seem likely that Samuel will go in the first round.

It doesn’t help his cause that when he ran a blistering 4.31 40-yard dash at the NFL combine, he was overshadowed by the fact that John Ross broke the record with a 4.22 time right before Samuel went up to run his. Still, NFL teams are always in need of players that can both get the ball on handoffs and make plays as a receiver and there aren’t many better in this draft at that skillset than Curtis Samuel.

Conley has been named in a police report in connection to an incident at a Cleveland area hotel.

Former Ohio State corner Gareon Conley is a suspect in an ongoing sexual assault investigation. Cleveland19 News reported an earlier occurring incident at a Cleveland area hotel Monday but declined to name Conley, saying only instead a prominent possible first round NFL Draft pick was involved. Because of how the situation was first reported, speculation had swirled for the last 24 hours as to which prospective NFL Draft prospect it could be.

Per a police report, a 23-year old woman is accusing Conley of engaging in an unwanted sexual act in a hotel suite bathroom on April 9. The police later interviewed two people at the hotel room who identified as associates of Conley’s. The woman declined to speak with police after going to a local hospital.

A Cleveland Police Department spokesperson told Land-Grant Holy Land that at this time, no warrant has been issued and no formal charges have been filed. The situation remains an open investigation within the Cleveland Division of Police Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Unit. No further information was made available by the department.

Conley, who had been working out in the Cleveland area prior to the draft, attended Massillon Washington High School prior to his three years in Columbus. He contributed initially in a part-time capacity before becoming a regular for Ohio State’s 2016 College Football Playoff team. He had been pegged as a probable first-round 2017 NFL Draft pick.

usa_today_9699560.0.jpg

Here’s what we know about the schedule so far.

Earlier, it was reported that Ohio State basketball would host William & Mary as part of their non-conference schedule for next season.

Now we’ve obtained the contract for the game, and can confirm the date, and a few other details.

The Buckeyes will host the Tribe on December 9, 2017. Ohio State will pay out a $90,000 guarantee for the matchup. Time and broadcast information is still TBA.

William & Mary was pretty good last season, finishing with an RPI of 112, and a KenPom ranking of 133. If the Tribe can get back into that neighborhood again next season, it’ll provide some nice depth to Ohio State’s computer profile, assuming the Buckeyes are able to get the win.

Here’s what we know about Ohio State’s schedule so far:

Nov 23-Nov 26: PK80 Invitational

Dec 9: William & Mary

Dec 23: vs North Carolina (in New Orleans)

TBA: Robert Morris

TBA: Big Ten/ACC Challenge (likely in Columbus)

The Buckeyes will not participate in the Gavitt Games next season. I wouldn’t look for another heavyweight to be added to this schedule, but it wouldn’t shock me if Ohio State added a true road game to this slate if they aren’t getting one in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

We’ll have more on the schedule as it develops.

The Buckeyes could be building one of their best defensive line hauls in recent history.

After earning commitments from three of the country’s top defensive line recruits in last year’s recruiting class, the coaching staff is continuing to focus on the position heading into this year’s class.

The program has already earned a commitment from the No. 1 defensive tackle in five-star Taron Vincent (Bradenton, Fl / IMG Academy) but the team isn’t stopping there. Late Sunday evening we learned that top-rated weak-side defensive end Micah Parsons (Harrisburg / PA Harrisburg) had decommitted from Penn State, opening up his recruitment.

The five-star WDE has taken multiple unofficial visits to Ohio State in recent months, including the annual spring game. The update in his recruitment is an obvious good sign for the Buckeyes and since the news, the 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions have seen a whopping eight predictions in favor of Ohio State. The push has now made the Buckeyes the favorite in the race with 53 percent of the predictions in their favor.

Ohio State is not alone in the pursuit for Parsons though, as Alabama and Georgia are also both making a strong push to land the elite talent. These two schools, along with both Ohio State and Penn State, will likely receive an official visit from Parsons in the coming year. These visits will provide much insight into the direction he is leaning.

Parsons isn’t the only elite defensive line recruit the Buckeyes are in good position with, though. The country’s No. 2 strong-side defensive end is also strongly considering the Buckeyes and he could be announcing his decision sooner rather than later.

Brenton Cox (Stockbridge, GA / Stockbridge) has long been favored to be a Georgia Bulldog when it is all said and done. However, the Buckeyes have been making a strong push to land him and were rewarded when Cox listed the Bucks alongside his hometown school Georgia as his top two schools.

IM STILL MAKING MY DECISION BETWEEN OHIO STATE AND UGA !! , NO CHOICE HAS BEEN MADE !

— B R E N T O N (@Brenton_cox) April 17, 2017

The four-star talent had initially planned to announce his decision this past weekend, but after visiting Columbus for the Ohio State spring game, he elected to delay his decision date.

The commitment has been pushed back a few days to make sure the right choice is being made , so it won't be this Sunday

— B R E N T O N (@Brenton_cox) April 19, 2017

To help ensure he makes the right decision for him, Cox also attended Georgia’s spring game Saturday, and expressed excitement beforehand on Twitter.

Not to be outdone however, Marc Givler of BuckeyeGrove.com reported that coaches from Ohio State traveled to Georgia on Monday to meet with Cox.

The battle for Cox is obviously intense and at this point nobody knows exactly which direction, if any, he is leaning. This could be because Cox himself is still unsure. It is safe to assume that an announcement will be coming soon though, as he appears to be looking for inspiration for a commitment video.

Make sure to keep up with Land-Grant Holy Land for updates on both of these elite recruits.

MotS&G Post Spring Game Depth Chart: Quarterbacks

Post Spring Game Depth Chart: Quarterbacks
Richard Tongohan
via our good friends at Men of the Scarlet and Gray
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

Barrett-1.jpg
The Starter:

The Quarterback is what makes the offense go and after a rare poor performance combined with poor offensive play calling, J.T. Barrett quickly returned to redeem himself for one last season at the helm. At the annual spring game, he showed why he was the starter, but his performance was far from perfect as he missed some of his receivers. He will lead this years Buckeye team to show that he is capable of being an deadly passer instead of someone who relies too heavily on his legs to make plays. Barrett will be an assassin because it is evident that Coach Wilson and Coach Day are making an impact with the Quarterbacks, but lets see how they execute when the season begins.

Burrow.jpg
Back-up Quarterback-A:

Joe Burrow was impressive when Barrett was pulled off of the field. He had three scores through the air and a bunch of yards, and he flat out was impressive. He found receivers at will and he showed that he could play at the Division I level. Coach Meyer has quite the dilemma on his hands, but it is a good problem to have. Burrow showed his ability to sling the rock and read the defenses he faced. Burrow has done all he can to secure the job after his performance at the spring game. It is up to Coach Meyer at this point.

Haskins.jpg
Back-up Quarterback-B:

Dwayne Haskins also threw for three touchdowns, and he too showed that he could play at the Division I level. He found his receiver and showed the ability to throw it deep, with a silky smooth touch and deadly accuracy. He will look to earn the backup job this season, and after J.T. leaves, he will look to beat out Burrow for the starting job. He is a year younger than Burrow and has the wheels and the biggest arm out of the rest of the Quarterbacks. If he can establish a foothold, he has the potential to succeed.

Martell.jpg
Scout Team Quarterback/Red Shirt:

Highly touted Quarterback out of Las Vegas was one of the biggest wins in last years recruiting class. He had quite the highlight reel and he established that during the spring game after he weaved through two defenders for a rushing touchdown. He was live and he did not have the black jersey on, so it is safe to say that he will work the scout team duties. He isn’t a terrible player and he has the traits that Coach Meyer looks for in a Quarterback. He has the arms, the speed and the accuracy, and he will be a star in the near future.
