DC Matt Patricia (Official Thread)

I just don't think Day squanders the post-NC karma reserve he's got on a bad DC hire. We can all speculate based on the past, but we don't really know anything until there's feedback from inside the Woody. What I'm reading from both the coaches and players is that they're glad Patricia was hired. Up to a point, yes, they've got to say that, BUT they're going past that point and in detail that they don't have to give and what they're saying, coupled with his DC experience, should translate positively to the field.

Bruce Thornton has wanted nothing more throughout his college basketball career than to win games at the highest level. With one year of eligibility left, he believes Ohio State is capable of that.
Ohio State head coach Jake Diebler announced on 97.1 The Fan's Morning Juice that Thornton plans to test the NBA waters but is expected to return for his senior season in Columbus.
"He's gonna go through the NBA draft process, which I'm really excited for him to go through and get feedback," Diebler said. "If he can stay in and be an NBA player, great, because I think he is an NBA player. Maybe he's not yet, and if he's not, he's gonna come back to Ohio State. That's something that should be celebrated. It says something about what we have going here. Someone in today's landscape who is gonna be a Buckeye. We have a saying in our program: 'Once a Buckeye, always a Buckeye.' Who better lives that out than Bruce?"
Almost certain to be the first four-time captain in school history after he held a captaincy each of his first three Ohio State seasons, Thornton has started since his first game donning the scarlet and gray as a freshman. With a career assist-to-turnover ratio of nearly four to one and 14.6 career points per game, he had his best season yet in 2024-25, collecting 17.7 points and 4.6 assists per contest. He took home second-team All-Big Ten honors for his efforts.
Thornton stands 21st on Ohio State's all-time scoring list with 1,487 points and 10th all-time in assists with 408. Having recorded at least 148 assists each of the last two seasons, he can reach third in dimes all-time with another 121 in 2025-26 and second if he posts a career-high 172.
With fellow starting guard John Mobley Jr. also announcing his return, the Buckeyes will return their full starting backcourt for Jake Diebler's pivotal second season as head coach. Redshirt sophomore Indiana transfer Gabe Cupps, redshirt sophomore Taison Chatman and incoming freshman Dorian Jones are currently set to round out the depth chart in Ohio State's backcourt.

I'm not so sure why he's so confident Bruce will be back, but obviously he knows more than we do. I guess for Bruce, perhaps NIL is looking like the better financial choice for next year. Get that 4th year at OSU, it may well pay better than being a second round pick or UDFA.

Cleveland Browns (Factory of Sadness)

Cleveland Browns co-owner Jimmy Haslam on Monday called the team's trade for quarterback Deshaun Watson a "big swing-and-miss."

"We took a big swing-and-miss with Deshaun," Haslam said Monday at the league's annual meeting. "We thought we had the quarterback; we didn't. And we gave up a lot of draft picks to get him, so we've got to dig ourselves out of that hole.

"... [The trade] was an entire organization decision and it ends with Dee [Haslam] and I, so hold us accountable."
.
.
.
Cleveland still owes Watson $46 million in each of the next two seasons.

The Browns' quarterback room currently consists of Watson and Kenny Pickett, whom the team traded for in mid-March. Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said Pickett will get an opportunity to compete to start in 2025.

Despite the admission that the Watson trade was unsuccessful, Haslam said the team is not tied to taking a quarterback with the second overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft.

"It would be great if we could get 'the quarterback,' but we're not going to force it," Haslam said. "We're going to be patient and we're going to try to accumulate as many really good football players as we can."
