The judge who granted the right to play another year of college sports to some athletes whose eligibility ran out last school year issued a new order Sunday that makes clear that the ruling does not include football players who signed pro contracts this summer, then had a change of heart.

U.S. District Judge Charlotte Sweeney responded to an NCAA request for clarity about her Friday ruling that granted a fifth year to athletes who graduated high school in 2022 and were not included in the new NCAA rule that allows five seasons of eligibility for Division I players.

That decision, she said, still stands, but has no impact on other NCAA rules, including its prohibition on players signing pro contracts, then coming back to college.

He's been playing great. Even his at-bats that haven't ended up as hits have been really hard hit balls (like the one that was scalded back to the pitcher today). He has been throwing runners out, and his ABS challenges on the Umps calls have been at the top of the league. Great dude in the locker room and community as well. The first two games this series, he got hits in each game and walked a total of 5 times. That's a lot of getting on base.

So his first at-bat in a Reds uniform was a home run. And his last at-bat might be a home run as well (it will be if he's traded tonight). That's got to be pretty rare.

NCAA suspends Tennessee linebacker Arion Carter​

Arion Carter has been suspended by the NCAA for the first two games of Tennessee football's upcoming season.​

Veteran linebacker Arion Carter has been suspended by the NCAA for the first two games of Tennessee's upcoming season, Adam Sparks of the Knoxville News Sentinel reported on Wednesday.

A UT spokesperson confirmed Carter's suspension to GoVols247.

The NCAA elected to suspend Carter because of a $427 flight that was paid for him while he was going through the NFL pre-draft process. Carter was suspended even though he repaid the money according to Sparks' reporting.

Carter will miss Tennessee's season opener against Furman as a result. He'll also miss UT's road trip to Georgia Tech the second week of the season.

Josh Heupel was not happy with the NCAA's decision to suspend one of his leaders.

The linebacker declared for the NFL Draft in mid-December after an All-SEC junior season he achieved despite playing more than two months of the season with double turf toe, an injury severe enough for surgery. It sidelined Carter for the entire pre-draft process. He eventually withdrew from the draft with the intentions of entering the transfer portal before he and Tennessee worked out a return for his senior season.

You will likely see a different scheme entirely when it comes to picking stuff like that up.

Last year was a near perfect storm for a team like Cryami - a team on a bye, with an OC who was essentially out the door and a young QB.

None of those will be in play for the Texas game this year.

Day 4 – August 2

Gameday!! We treated this like a normal gameday with a pregame meal and walkthrough at the hotel. Then headed to the arena.

The Reuben Rodriguez Coliseo had just hosted a Puerto Rican League playoff game last night in front of a sellout crowd. While it wasn’t quite the same atmosphere, there was a nice contingent of Ohio State fans. In total, there were a few hundred people in the gym.

The team came out hot and built a 17-3 lead at the first media timeout. They continued to shoot well the rest of the way and won 117-75. The biggest takeaways were that we shot it well, 21-of-43 from long range (48 percent) and shared it well, 33 assists on 41 made field goals. Everyone played and most everyone was on the floor between 15 and 20 minutes.

Jimmie Williams had the hot hand from long range, making six three-pointers en route to a team-high 21 points. Anthony Thompson had the first two points of the game, a right-handed slam in the lane, as he would finish with 14 points and seven rebounds. Amare Bynum had seven assists and three steals while Ivan Njegovan finished with a game-high 10 rebounds.

Recovery was on the docket upon arrival back at the hotel before dinner this evening. The focus is on one more game. We played well today but can we go back to the gym and give the same effort tomorrow, similar to a Big Ten Tournament. That was the message to the group. We’ll see tomorrow!

Ohio State basketball fans get promising look at roster in first scrimmage​

The Buckeyes performed well in their first scrimmage of the season.

Last March was the first time Ohio State basketball fans had an opportunity to watch their team play in the Big Dance in four seasons. Of course, they lost in heartbreaking fashion. Still, it was progress for Jake Diebler and his coaching staff to have his team playing meaningful games in March.

Heading into the 2026-27 season, the Buckeyes have some big expectations. They have two five-star freshmen coming in to change the look of the team. Fans are hoping they can lead them to actually advance in the NCAA Tournament. After their first scrimmage of the year, fans should be pleased.

Ohio State cruises to victory in Puerto Rico​

The Ohio State Buckeyes took on Los Boris in Puerto Rico. It was a game that they were expected to dominate, and they did. They won the game 117-55, which was great to see. Even more encouraging were the performances from the new Buckeyes on the roster who were not here a year ago.

Anthony Thompson is one of the five-star freshmen coming in with a lot of expectations on his shoulders. He finished the game with 14 points on 6/10 shooting in just over 18 minutes of play. It's encouraging to see him play well in his first competitive game wearing the Scarlet and Gray.

The other five-star freshman is LJ Smith, who reclassified so that he could join the squad a year early. He finished with 15 points in 17 minutes, shooting 3/7 from beyond the 3-point arc. However, neither freshman was the star of the show for Ohio State. That award goes to Jimmie Williams.

Williams is a transfer from Duquesne who averaged 15 points per game last year. In this scrimmage, he was blazing hot from deep. He made six of the seven shots he fired from beyond the arc, scoring 20 points in all. That's a little surprising considering he shot just under 34 percent from 3-point land a year ago.

Ohio State basketball fans have something to look forward to this season​

Heading into this season, the Buckeyes have a lot of talent that should get fans excited for the first time in a while. With all of the talent that they possess, it's not out of the realm of possibility for this team to finish in the top four in the conference. Of course, the ultimate goal is to make the NCAA Tournament again, but to actually win games.

For how great Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith has been in his first two years of college, his trophy case is a bit bare. Of course, he helped the Buckeyes win a national championship in 2024. However, he has not won the Biletnikoff Award for the best receiver in college football yet.

Coming into last year, Smith was the favorite to win that award, as well as the Heisman Trophy. He finished 2025 without bringing home either. This year, he is one of the favorites to win both awards. Joel Klatt recently divulged what he thinks the odds are of Smith winning the Heisman.

While appearing on Pardon My Take, Klatt picked Smith to win the Heisman Trophy. He explained that if he had to bet his life on one player to win the award right now, he would take Smith.

"If I have to be right, I'm taking Jeremiah Smith. This could be a year where a player's body of work gets respected, and he should be up there...if you said, 'You have to be right, you have to bet your own money,' I would pick Jeremiah Smith because he is the best player in the sport."

Smith is definitely the best player in the country as things stand right now. He makes the biggest impact and is the most dangerous weapon. Of course, winning the Heisman would be incredibly tough for him because of the fact that it's usually a quarterback award.

However, in the last decade or so, more non-QBs have won the award. Travis Hunter and Devonta Smith both won it because of their pass-catching skills. Smith is a better pure receiver than both of them, but he also could lose votes to Julian Sayin since it is usually a quarterback award.

The Ohio State Buckeyes need Smith to be unstoppable in 2026​

Smith would certainly love to win the Heisman, but that's not his ultimate goal. Smith has stated that he wants to win a national championship in his final season with the Buckeyes. In order to do that, they need him to play like the best player in the country.

Ohio State is going to have moments where Smith is going to be double-teamed, so they need to find a viable option on the opposite side of him who can take attention away from Smith. Of course, Smith is good enough to still be an effective player even when dealing with multiple defenders.
