Pessimistically, I expected to see a bland predominantly rushing offense that ignored the strength of our passing game. I was enormously relieved that this wasn’t the case at all. I liked the pass/run mix and Smith showed us, and Tejas, that he’s not afraid to throw downfield. Critically, even though it was against Ball State, the offense never had that janky pulling plays out of jar one at a time quality that we’ve seen even against outmatched teams. So far, I’m a fan.

That being said, I thought our run game sucked… against Ball State. Two big runs in the second half doesn’t/shouldn’t cancel out that other than that neither Jackson looked like he should be RB1 or 2; and Jakobi’s pass “blocking” was abhorrent. What we saw yesterday, from the line, as well, in the running game will not get it done next week.

Stock up report for Ohio State after beating Ball State​

Khary Wilder​

The true freshman defensive lineman flashed early for Ohio State and looked like a player who is going to have a role on the defensive line this season. Wilder generated a couple of pressures and was even rushing from the interior on some passing downs. It was a great day for him as the Buckeyes look for someone to be the No. 2 pass rusher opposite Kenyatta Jackson. Perhaps Wilder could be that guy.

Luke Fahey looks to have won the backup job over Tavien St. Clair​

A lot of the chatter over the last few weeks centered on a legitimate quarterback competition for the backup spot behind Sayin. The expectation was that Tavien St. Clair still held that job. He’s a former 5-star recruit and one of the top quarterbacks in the 2025 class, and he already had a full year in the program under his belt.

That’s what makes Saturday’s development so notable. It wasn’t St. Clair who entered the game as Ohio State’s No. 2 quarterback. It was freshman Luke Fahey.

Fahey has been a bright spot in Ohio State’s freshman class this past offseason, and he asserted himself as a real competitor in the quarterback room throughout fall camp. Listed at just 5-foot-11, Fahey doesn’t fit the prototypical size profile, but his play earned him the opportunity over a player with more experience and recruiting pedigree. Fahey finished 5-of-7 for 62 passing yards, one passing touchdown, and one interception on a Chris Henry Jr. drop.

Even if the backup quarterback job isn’t fully solidified at this point, Fahey clearly owns the lead in that race. For him to leapfrog St. Clair is a significant statement about where things stand in that room.

After the game, Day shared his thoughts on the Longhorns.

Ryan Day all but confirmed an Ohio State football starter’s job isn’t safe after first win of the season​

Ohio State’s offense has a potential change that could come about following the Ball State game. Ryan Day’s comments opened the door for a chance to happen going forward potentially.



The Ohio State Buckeyes blanked Ball State 56-3 to open the 2026 season, a game that went about how everyone expected with the Buckeyes looking like the far superior team. Ohio State is set to pay Ball State $1.9 million to play the game, so dominance was the baseline expectation. The win served as a nice warm-up for what comes next week when Ohio State travels to Austin to play the Texas Longhorns.

Coming out of the victory, there were plenty of positives, but one glaring concern stood out and could become a real problem against Texas: the right tackle position.

Phillip Daniels struggled against Ball State​

Quarterback Julian Sayin was sacked a couple of times by Ball State on Saturday, and a couple of pressures came from the right side where tackle Phillip Daniels was working. Daniels, a former Minnesota transfer, started every game for the Buckeyes last year at right tackle. Ohio State returns the majority of its offensive line, and the unit is expected to be a strong suit in 2026.

The opener, however, gave a little bit of worry about whether the Buckeyes have a vulnerability on the right side.

Daniels simply didn’t play well against Ball State. For a couple of drives, Ohio State opted to move Austin Siereveld from right guard to right tackle and then inserted Gabe VanSickle at right guard. That offensive line combination produced better results than when Daniels was on the field, at least from the eye test. The viewing window was slim with VanSickle only getting a couple of drives, but it didn’t look bad. That could be the direction Ohio State has to go.

Ryan Day hints the offensive line competition is far from over​

After the game, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day all but confirmed the competition along the offensive line will continue.

“I think that is the flexibility that we have [playing depth OL], and the competition continues, and they’re pushing each other,” Day stated.
Those few words tell you Ohio State is not 100% settled on what its offensive line will look like in 2026. The Buckeyes have options, and Day appears willing to use them if they need to go that route

You can lean on him more heavily in the bigger games.

Lane Kiffin dropped some comments after LSU’s blowout win over Clemson that Dabo Swinney is not going to recover from​

LSU was obviously confident going into the game, but even they may have been surprised at just how much of a beatdown it was against Clemson.

Kiffin, in fact, said after the game that he was surprised at how dysfunctional Clemson was on offense.

He also said the scout team scored more against LSU’s defense in practice this past week than Clemson did.

“I thought it’d be like 35-7 or 35-10,” said Kiffin on the field after the game (via David Hale). “I didn’t know they’d be that dysfunctional on offense.”

The only more shameless conference ref rig or attempted ref rig I can think of is when the Big East refs kept doing all they could to drag West Virginia to a W over Pitt in 2007 that woulda gotten them to the BCS title game. They failed but it was very egregious

The Big 10 looks as bad as any other conference, all to save a middling Michigan team that will finish year with 4+ losses.
